Subject: Anti lag system

Question:
I was looking at the EVO 7 at the mitsi garage and saw it had an anti lag system (which apparently injects fuel into the exhaust casing a great bang and poping but also kills lag dead...is there a system on the market to buy and if not how tricky would it be to adpt one for the campus..lol...

thanks
steve

Answer:
Anti lag is a great idea but in practise is a bad thing as it will damage your little 5 turbo in no time because it is not designed to take the shocks that anti lag systems cause. It is up to you but i do not know of anyone who produces a kit for the 5 anyway.

Subject: Compression test results

Question:
Hi wiz,

I decided to do a compression test on my car after finding some creamy residue around my oil filler cap. The results are as follows (lbs/inch) - (from the water pump end)
114 112.5 124 122.5
The test was done while the car was very slightly warm (engine has done 80k F-reg). Does the difference in pressure mean that the h/g may have gone as i suspected. If it has and while i've got the head off, are there any reletively easy DIY mods that i can do? Also what would be involved in changing the valve stem oil seals. Is this a difficult job?

thanks again.

Answer:
A 10% differential between cylinders is not uncommon on older engines but it may be a head gasket.
Try repeating the compression test firstly cold and dry and then with a little squirt of oil in each cylinder. If it levels out then you probably have a dodgy valve seat or two. If it is still different then it is just wear and tear. If you do decide to remove the head, get it ported properly as doing it yourself can actually make it worse.
Also get the valves re lapped in as this will ensure a good seal when running.
As for the valve stem seals, they are a 1/2 hour job once the head is off, all you need to do is remove the valve springs etc and fit them. Getting this done while its all in bits will reduce labour.

Subject: Boom!! goes the Gasket

Question:
Hi Wiz, you might remeber I was having all sorts of cooling/pipe splitting problems. we'll after buying new pipes and fitting them, my head gasket blew big time this mornin.

Right so its gotta be fixed, my engine was rebuilt about 15000 miles ago and it had its head skimmed etc. do I have to get this done again?? or will it be ok just to have the head gasket replaced??

I have been quoted £280 squids to have the gasket replaced? How does that sound??

Regards
Mun

Answer:
£280 is ok if they do the job properly but if they just skim the head again it may add to your problems and blow again due to the raised compression ratio.
Get the head off and get it checked for flatness. If it needs skimming then i would suggest getting the chambers in the head measured and enlarged back to standard compression (or even slightly less than std incase it blows again at a later date) This will cost a bit but is better than blowing gaskets all the time.

Subject: Sump leak

Question:
Bonjourno,

I can't seam to stop the oil drip I get from my sump, last time I did the oil I managed to stop it but this time I did it up tight it still leaks a little! any ideas? gasket sealent or something like that?

Cheers dude.

Dave :-)

Answer:
I would suggest using new end seals and a seam of a decent rubberised gasket sealent to sort the sump. Check also that it is not the turbo return pipe or crankcase breather pipe that is leaking as these go hard and spilt.

Subject: backfiring

Question:
Hi Wiz m8,car was running fine then then after a run it wouldnt start,i thought it was out of fuel but it turnerd out to be the fuel pump relay under dash so i swapped it,but then it started to back fire very loud on deceleration but i got the car home.next day car ran ok from cold but whan it got hot back firing again got it home and it died.now it wont start from hot or cold and there is no spark at the plugs or the coil lead......i changed the ecu but still same...could it be the flywheel sensor?? ive been told that these never go down any ideas.....plz help.

regards steve

Answer:
There is a relay under the centre section of plastic by the heater fan under the bonnet. This controls the power to the ECU and has been known to go. It is possible that the timing sensor has gone wrong and it will probably be the wiring to it rather than the sensor itself. Try one from another car if possible if the relay is ok.

Subject: KNOCKING

Question:
HI WIZ,ONCE AGAIN I NEED SOME HELP! MY PH 2 HAS KNOCKING COMING FROM THE FRONT LEFT SHOCK AREA, I FITTED NEW SPAX ADJUSTABLES + SPRINGS, POWERFLEX BUSHS, NEW DONUTS, IT PASSED THE MOT BUT WHEN I GO DOWN A BUMPY ROAD (WHATEVER SPEED) IT SOUNDS LIKE THE SHOCKS LOOSE AND RATTLING UP + DOWN OR SOMETHING, I CHANGED THE BALLJOINT, WHEN JACKED UP EVERYTHING FEELS TIGHT, TOTALLY STUMPED, ANY IDEAS??
CHEERS TONY.

Answer:
It could be that the shock has burst and is rattling as i have seen spax do this before. If all else is tight and the strut top has not cracked/broken then i am a bit stumped too!

Subject: Lights

Question:
After coming off the motorway and as I parked up, I see that my oil, oil pressure and water temp light was on, but when I press the throttle to say about 1200 RPM, the light switches off. I showed it to my mechanic and he suggested the oil sender on the front of the engine might be faulty. Is the water temp and oil lights both connected, or can it be something else causing this?

Answer:
It sounds more like an earth fault to me!
Whether its in the dash or the alternator i cannot tell but you could try fitting another dash from a friend to see if this cures the fault.

Subject: Depression or minus boost??

Question:
Wiz,

With reference to Turbo Nicks question about plumbing in a guage, What is meant by minus boost or depression?? What are you measuring when you get a minus reading?

Cheers.

Dan :-)

Answer:
A minus reading shows that the engine is sucking in fuel and air rather than the turbo forcing it in!

Subject: dump valve

Question:
Hello Wizard
I have recently purchased a dump valve and my friend told me that it could do damage to my windscreen wipers and my oil filter is this correct or no?
Thank You for your help.

Answer:
I really hope that you are joking as there is no way a dump valve will effect the wipers or oil filter.

Subject: which 1

Question:
Hi wiz,

Can u recommend an uprated fuel pump, or can u recommend 1 from another car that will do the same job, thanx.

Answer:
I recommend the Bosch pump as sold by all the tuners as this does the job nicely!

Subject: BEST TYRES

Question:
Can u give me any advice on the best tyres to fit to my standard rims
ive currently got Pirrelli P600's

Answer:
Tyres are a personal choice as to what handling characteristics you are after.
Pirelli's are a good choice and probably the best tyre for the standard size rims.
Alternatively you could take this opportunity to upgrade to a bigger wheel and tyre combination like 195/45/15's or bigger!

Subject: sidelights not working when ignition is switched off

Question:
wizard,
could u please help me, my car has just failed the dreaded MOT due 2 my sidelights failling 2 work when the ignition is switched off. ive changed both sets of side light bulbs and the normal set work with the ignition swithced on.Could it be the sensor under the bonnet next 2 the windscreen washer bottle???

any answers much needed!!

Answer:
That sensor you mention is actually the dim/dip resistor and could be the problem as it is related to the side lights as well.
Try bridging the wires from it together and see if this cures the problem.

Subject: Not as powerful

Question:
I have fitted a secondhand turbo but it's not as powerful as the old one, I had the stage 1 conversion (turbo upto max boost rejetted carb) done on the old one so when I fitted the new one I adjusted the boost to about the same as the old one using the boost gauge but when I put my foot down it does'nt seem as powerful. where as before it just wanted to keep going in every gear now it does'nt. any ideas.

Thanks

Answer:
I take it you mean the old turbo was standard just with the boost turned up?
This would suggest the new turbo is sticking a bit (possibly due to carbon build up)

The other possibility is the old turbo was actually a hybrid and not standard at all. This would mean it moved more air for the same boost and therefore produced more power.

Subject: Hybrid

Question:
Wiz,
what sort of gains would i get by fitting a hybrid, i dont know if mine is standard or not all i know is that it was fitted by uni. turbos. Its runs at 7-18psi ,pace inter, etc etc

Answer:
Your best bet will be to contact uni. turbos with any serial number on the turbo and see if they can trace its origin. If not a decent sized hybrid should give you better power at the same boost due to it moving more air and not working as hard as a standard turbo.

Subject: 17"" alloys

Question:
I'm just about to put a set of 17"" alloys (with 205/40/17's) on my car but have heard that it will make my speedo reading incorrect. How much will it be out by and do you know if any styling companies make a replacement speedo dial to sort this out? Cheers mate.

Answer:
If i remember rightly the reading will be about 10% out.
As far as i know, no-one makes a speedo dial to correct it but you could try removing the needle and moving it a bit to get the readings nearer to normal. Be very carefull if you do, as the speedo is very delicate.

Subject: lots of smoke!!

Question:
Wiz i have just been running down the road and i floored it in third when all of a sudden the car jerked hard and backfired once and a very large ploom of dark smoke was behind me!
the car is still running fine now,i was on about 20 psi at the time, could it be serious?

Answer:
Sounds like you had a bit of dirt in the carb or similar.
If the car is not smoking anymore and goes ok then i wouldn't worry.

Subject: Petrol tank

Question:
My petrol tank on my 89' G R5 GT turbo is leaking and I intend to replace it over winter. Please could you give me any advice on doing this and anything else that I should do/replace/uprate whilst I am there.

Many thanks.

Answer:
I would recommend a new filter, uprated pump (maybe) and all new pipe clips etc when you renew the tank. The job itself is straight forward but awkward. You are best off doing it on a ramp or pit rather than just on axle stands.

Question:
every time i press the brake pedal on my 5 the main beam lights come on and any lights which are on the dash go dim.

thanks for any help you can give me,

Answer:
um?????

Sounds like a major earth fault somewhere.

Try the earth point behind the headlight and any wiring connectors in the area, making sure they are clean and dry.

Subject: Can`t remove from 5th.

Question:
Hiya Wiz, wish i could`ve spoke to you under better circumstances but thats life I suppose.
Anyway, while driving last night, and putting my foot down to about 70-80 mph, I approached a roundabout and couldn`t get it out of 5th. Had to come to a standstill and slip the clutch in 5th to get it going, hence a very smelly clutch! Stopped the car for a bit, had a look over it, couldn`t see nothing ,started it up again and off I went again, all gears working. Went up to fifth, came out as normal. Its like nothings wrong most of the time but every now and then, can`t shift out of fith, unless I apply a bit of force. Also now the gearbox seems to be feeling a bit stiffer to change than normal, plus the `stuck in 5th sometimes, alright most of the time` scenario. The clutch seems to be fine, no slipping and the pedal in biting in the right place. The gearbox is also less than a year old, under warranty thank god, but they messed me around so much last time, I`d like your opinion first, so they don`t try to fob me off. Cheers geezer, thanks for your help

Shilvers

Answer:
I would say try adjusting the linkage first and if that doesn't work then it sounds like an internal selector problem.
Get an independant gearbox specialist to look at it first before taking it back to the people you got it from if you are worried about being messed about.

Subject: Wheel fitments

Question:
Dear Wiz
do you know what other cars use a 4x100 PCD and 35mm offset as I'm about to sell my 17s and would like to offer them to as many peeps as possible ?
Cheers !

Answer:
4 x 100 pcd and 35mm offset is pretty common, they will go on any Renault obviously and also any 4 stud Rover, 4 stud Calibra's, Cavaliers and Vectra's.

Subject: Misfiring

Question:
Wizard, every now and then my car keeps misfiring, at least I think it's misfiring, it's hard to explain but it goes kind of juddery and I have a loss power, all I seem to do is put my foot down a bit and it eventually clears it up and it runs perfectly after that. What do you think it is? Thanks Wiz.

Answer:
It could be a blocked fuel filter or carb jet.
Try a new filter and some carb cleaner.

Subject: Fitting peugeot alloys.

Question:
My Momo alloys got nicked recently. I have managed to get hold of some cheap alloys from a peugoet 205 gti. The only problem is that they have a 3"" gap from stud to stud, and my GTT has a 2.75"" gap. Is there a easy way to fit these without too much cost?

Answer:
Simple answer..... NO!

Look for wheels with 100mm PCD (stud to stud)

Try BMW, VW etc.

Subject: sound

Question:
what it is when i start to brake not at speed i get a sound like some one is playing with tin foil and tapping some metal together coming from back of the engine i think it's only when the the car is in gear and i am slowing down i thought it might be my waste gate with no boost just opening and closing but don't rearly know

Answer:
Sorry but sounds are hard to translate to answers without actually hearing them!

All i can suggest is take it to a rolling road to simulate driving and have the bonnet open to identify where the noise is coming from.

Subject: still running hot

Question:
hi wizard please help, ive had a over heating problem with my car for ages now. ive had a new head gasket , and had the head crack tested and skimmed and i also bought a second hand rad. for a couple of days it was running lovely it would stay at about just under half way. but now it hits the 3rd bar? do you think it could mean new rad??

Answer:
Have you tested the thermostat?
It could be faulty, and the rad could be blocked.
Try flushing the rad backwards to remove any stuck dirt etc.

Subject: how much psi

Question:
hi, there

well, i simply want to know, how much can a 5 take on adjustable boost, without replacing everything that goes with it,

other than wheels and lowering, what modifications are absolutely essential,

cheers geez

Answer:
I know for a few cars running a constant 21psi at the manifold (23ish at the carb) with only filter/ alloy intercooler/ exhaust etc. ie no internal mods or hybrid. This boost is not guarenteed but seems to work well for the owners!

A strut brace and good brakes are must haves for the 5GTT.
Try Green stuff pads if you cannot afford uprated disks.

Subject: speedo probs

Question:
hi.
when sitting at a stand still my speedo flickers up and down, i noticed that the more consumers i have on the more it flickers, it even flickers to the bass line of most songs.
ive recently had a clutch fitted could it be a poor connection to the speedo drive.

thanks!

Answer:
It is more likely that the alternator or battery is struggling with the amount of power you are asking for!
Try getting an uprated alternator and heavy duty battery!

Subject: No ignition lights

Question:
Following 2 batteries going flat, I replaced the alternator only now I'm not getting any ignition lights or turnover at all.
I've checked the battery and all the connections.
The car does make a clicking noise when I close the door and turn the key in the ignition, but when I open the door this stops!.
Could it be a faulty alternator or a broken wire somewhere?

Answer:
I would say you have a major earth problem maybe due to the alternator earthing out.

Subject: Missing

Question:
Wizard, At the weekend I gave my plugs a clean and found the 2 of the plugs were capped in crap - carbon, not oil, and that the other 2 were in good nick. Why could this be. Anyway one of them had broken just below where they join the HT lead, so i bought a replacement - the same NGK 8EV that was on there before. All seemed fine and the car was better to drive. But on Sunday, whilst normal driving, it started missing, popping VERY loudly when slowing down and will not even idle now. It sounds like a bag of sh1t at low revs, but seems to sound normal over 3 grand ? Should I just buy a whole new set of plugs ? And could it be the new plug ?

Answer:
It sounds like you have a problem with the plugs sparking but this may be due to worn leads rather than plugs.

Treat the car to a set of each and it will thank you!!

Subject: Wierd......or maybe not, after all, it is a five turbo.!!

Question:
Hello Wiz,

ok, I am driving along doing 50 or so..no probs...then get on the motor way and get up to speed 70 - 80... As i accelerate i noticed my temp gauge creaping up at a constant rate..all the way up to the point that i thought it as going to overheat...Turned on the heater and the thing cooled down right away...so i thought it must be the rad but, why doesn`t it do it at 50 or below or hen i am stationary for long periods of time (never goes above half way..
I have a new 82 degree Thermostat and 72 degree fan switch both work fine..Is it the rad cos it has been bled properly as far as i can tell..

Sorry for the long ask!!!

Cheers

Steve (or the Meddler) as i am sometimes called..

Answer:
This fault is usually due to oil or cooolant heat build up at higher speeds/boost and is normally the radiator partially blocked. Another way to prevent this is to add a seperate oil cooler and remove the pipes to the radiator so that it only cools water and not oil as well.
