Subject: Alternative idea to attach front bumper Question: Hi wiz, So i noticed on the http://www.primaracing.com/index.aspx front page the the R5 had a round black hole where the bumper bracket is but on the outside.... do you know of anyone else who has used this method to hold the bumper on. If so how should i go about it? thanks Chris Answer: i would imagine it still used the OE bumper mounting bracket. - then remove the metal clip that rusts up and is attached to the plastic bracket. he then probably tack welds a nut onto the back of the bracket on the body, and then cuts a hole into the bumper - just above the centre of the bumper bracket - so that you can see the hole in the centre of the bracket. - then you get a long bolt, and can fit the bumper with a socket, through the hole, and the bolt just goes straight into the welded nut. - do you follow? |

Answer: hi< sorry for the delay. ive just had a look at this: http://www.rtoc.org/files/Renault%20Diaolgy/Renault%205/Suspension%20and%20Steering/R5%20antiroll.JPG and reckon that it might be there to stop flexing in the longest straightest part of the antirollbar. - i think it effectively shortens the bar, by clamping it? might be total crap, but it seems the ,most likely explaination to me. |

Subject: changed the head potential issues Question: after cracking a liner and rebuilding the bottom end i found that the head was 72mm so the compression was through the roof 9.8:1 now i have a second head thats 75 mm, will i have to mess with my fueling? and how do i do it? Answer: no need to mess with the fuelling. ive never seen a 75mm gt turbo head, only ever 73.5mm originally and 74.5mm later on. |

Subject: -blank- Question: not worried about cash been told by my mate i need to do con rods first paddle clutch been orderd and looking at importing a turbo from the states just want some help on the right things to do ie cams, head,cab, all the things to run high boost got a bet with him 4 1/4 of mile hes got an 11sec car dont want to be far from that looking to spend about £3000 on engine alone any help would be great cheers Answer: do you want to keep it a 1397cc? have you thought about a bigger engine? if you do wanna keep the 1.4, then you dont need to change the rods, id keep the pistons too, just balance the whole bottom end. make sure that the head is above 73mm deep then get some good head work, and a cam of at least a piper 285 spec. a t28/t25 type turbo would give you the power, but its the fuelling which will make or break you. do you wanna go full efi, or stick with the carb? |

Subject: Sft pedal conversion Question: I have recently purchased a phase 11 that I will be using for hillclimbing and sprinting. It has had a soft pedal (brake) conversion in the past and I want as firm a pedal as poss. What is involved ( to return to standard), would I be better in going for braided lines as well? Cheers Answer: a soft brake pedal conversion? if you wanted a firm pedal, fit the braided lines first of all, then consider a slightly larger master cylinder. - the next one up from a 19mm is a 20.summat. :) |

Subject: carb wont idle Question: hi wizard been playing with my 5gt for a few years now been trying to battle with the carb last few years read this section regularly and follow tips given to others and go from there i was talking to some one scoff i think his name was at the rolling road in Chester recently and he was talking to my pal about a brass bush that sits in the carb body were the second enrichment is found on the other part that is remove to replace and he suggested i drill the brass bush bigger as it is not removable i look through other questions asked in this field and found a question and answer that looked like the same problem so i drilled that brass bush from 1.5 to 1.6 and changed the jets as recommended back to standard this was for that person to run 16psi was advised then to up main jet if boost was to be increasted so as im run 18psi current set up i put in 1.3 main 1.0 sandard second enrichment 1.25 std acc also drilled inlet float jet to 2. my fueling befor this was throwing to much in to early but was spot on 12.4/6 on afr at full song and idled fine. but since doing this resent mode to the carb my fuelling is absolutely spot on all the way from pulling off Wright the way up to full *** 6.3 rpm pulling like a train afr 12.4/6 spot on im sure you will agree so thanks again for the great advice all you boys give people but and there's always a but with a 5gt so now all that is sorted the car will not idle it runs in every other way but wont idle removed stripped completely blow out with air line 3 times carb is mint new overhaul kit worked fine before this new mod checked for air leaks thourly nothing very bad starting seams to be flooding. engine slowly drops of rev until stops doent just stop once you come off the throttle. is the brass bush part of the idle circuit? hope all that makes sense any help would be gratefully received cheers jock Answer: take the plastic carb top off, and when its idling, have a look down the centre of the carb. - see if fuel is dripping onto the top of the brass throttle plate - it shouldnt do that!. make sure the car is up to temperature though! i assume you have taken the large brass screw out of the drivers side of the carb and looked through it to see if the small hole in the end of it is totally free of bits. you might even need to poke it out with a small needle. you may need to richen the carb up abit at idle... let me know |

Subject: Air bubbles in the float chamber. Question: Hi, wiz... Can you tell me why my float chamber keeps on having air bubbles in it. After when i run the car for awhile, then when i take the top half of the carb off, i can see air bubbles in the float chamber. Cheers... Spyder. Answer: well.... as the fuel is squirting into the float chamber, i'd imagine its taking air with it.- thus causing the bubbles. - think what happens if you fill a bucket up with a hose. - if you lift the head of the hose out of the water, bubbles are formed in the water... |

Subject: carb fueling Question: hi finally got some good weather and time to have a look at my girl and got to the bottom of the problem with the carb i had checked the idle jet as you said, but you were right about the fuel dripping onto the brass plate and i realised what it was my piss poor attempt at drilling the float jet !lol so thank you for your help on that one i put standard one back in and that problem was fixed !but and there it is again that! but!the fuelling has gone what could i call it !***s! is about right,so i was wondering if you would be kind enough to give me your assistants again as i am run-in low on mural with this these days getting older i think lol if i gave you a brief but detailed description of my cars spec would you be able to give me a base carb set up i could work from as have been doing this for so long and with such long breaks in-between i have kind of lost track of everything if you no what i mean" any help would be great fully recieved kind regards jock Answer: so what exactly is the car doing now? - pls describe as best you can. also let me know the spec. |

Subject: cant move flywheel Question: I jacked up the rear of the car in first gear it got part way up then i hear a bang the car moves forward a bit. Since then the engine or flywheel wont turn over i have put it in gear and rocked the car back and forward and it will not move. i have removed the starter motor and timing chain cover and bottom flywheel cover. How can i test i the gear box diff or drive shafts are broke any help will be good. Thanks dan Answer: have you tried to start the car with your foot on the clutch? how about jacking up the front of the car,get a friend to press the clutch, then try and turn the engine. if it does, then you've got a knackered gearbox or a misaligned gear shifter. |

Subject: Starter sometimes works then doesn't then works again Question: The starter is a new unit. Changed it with an old one thinking that it was it but still works then doesn't. Sounds like the solenoid is working but seams that it doesn't have enough power to turn the flywheel? Would a bad earth contribute to this sort of problems? Thanks you for your response. Subject: Oil Gauge fitting Question: Afternoon wizard,,,here below is the link to my question http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=28351 PLEASE HELP and CHEERS for any you can offer :-) Answer: as has been said, as urs is a mechanical gauge you need to T into the turbo oil feed after the one way valve. there is another feed from the oil gallery you could use - its hidden under the alternator on the front of the block - with a allen bolt in it. you'd need a straight adapter to screw into the block for that one though. |

Subject: oil pump - scoring marks Question: Hi wiz i have stripped down both oil pumps i have here and both are well within wear tolerance. Both oil pump internalls show light scoring marks everywhere - is this a issue, can i get them cleaned up or is it complete oil pump needing to be replaced.
