Subject: T2 exhaust housing on a gt28r

Question:
hi silly strange thought. a have a nackered t2 with more play in it than the west end, my gt28r is in perfect health, is it possible to put the exhaust compressor and snail from the t2 onto the gt28?

Answer:
In a word, nope.

The GT28 uses a GT25 sized core, turbine wheel and turbine housing, all of which are bigger than the T2.

It might be possible to have the T2 housing machined to take the ball bearing core and wheel of the GT28 but you really shouldn't bother! You'll end up with a hugely mis-matched turbo - a big compressor (front end) and a tiny turbine that isn't able to flow enough to keep the front end happy. A turbo is about balance - it's no good fitting a big compressor that's good at flowing air only to choke the engine up with a tiny turbine.

If you can find, have machined and fit an 0.49ar T25 turbine then you'll be on to a winner :-)

Subject: Removing Heater

Question:
As my car is only used on track I'm going to remove the heater. What do I do with the 2 outlets from the water pump. As one branches off to the turbo can I just connect a pipe straight to that and block off the other that goes straight to the heater?

Answer:
i'd probably not remove the heater as the matrix is very efficient at removing heat from the coolant. - ideal when racing the car....
although if you really wanted to, you can just loop out the heater matrix if need be.

Subject: gearbox, longer ratio wanted

Question:
hi guys, no one will be impressed with this question as its actually about a ren 5 campus prima! but im sure majority of you will know the answer to my question! basically my prima looks like a turbo and its a rolling advert for my company (vehicle wrapping & graphics) but as i use it sometimes to go up the motorway i feel that it could do with a longer 5th really just to calm the engine down a bit when im chillin at 70! any knowledge of a gearbox that would work would be great! maybe an early gt turbo gear box? i would assume it would be a cable driven speedo? right? haven't bothered to look

Answer:
5's are well known to be buzzy on the motorway - they are all like it- so are the clios ive been told too. i've heard that volvo 440 and 480 boxes are longer in 5th, but you'd have to look into that. - beware, cos the turbo ones are electronic speedo. - clios generally arent.

Subject: wiring loom OS

Question:
I am rebuilding my car after 3 years apart, can you tell me if there is a relay fitted somewhere in the OSR quarter p***?? I am refitting the loom that runs from front of car to rear lights etc, and I seem to remember seeing a relay there?
If so what is the relay for and what colour/how many pins etc (photos)???

Many thanks

Answer:
its been a while.... but i do know its the relay that controls the auxillary fuel pump - that pumps the fuel from the small tank to the big tank. i remember it was bigger than a standard 4 pin relay too.

Subject: door cards

Question:
can you still buy phase 2 inner door cards?? and gear lever gaitors/knobs??

Answer:

well according to someone in the know....

Phase 2 inner door cards - there are a very few left but not in the UK according to Renault Parts £209 + vat each front door.

Gear lever gaiters are showing some in France, this doesn't always mean they are on the shelf though. certain suppliers in the UK have stock though.

Gear knobs listed as N/A Renault Manchester had 15 on the shelf but they soon sold via ebay. certain suppliers in the UK have stock though.

i hope this helps???

I have GT Tuning Carb Inlet Elbow with 4 pipe outlets.
One of those actuator outlets(near driver)have hole smaller than front one. Like 1/4 size. Looks like there is placed in some plastic pipe makin smaller that hole. Is this done for some purpose? Haven't check OE carb top yet is there also hole smaller. Just wondering..
Best regards

Answer:
yes the standard plastic carb top has a metal tube inside the outlet that makes it smaller than the other outlets.

Question:
hey!my clutch has been acting stange, theres not much bite and its close to the floor panel when it bites.also the pedal seems quit lose, direction pls

Answer:
sounds like the clutch pedal ratchet has munched itself.
try stamping on the pedal a few times.
if that doesnt work, then try manually moving the ratchet at the top of the pedal.
if that fails you may have to get a new pedal inc ratchet.

then again, your clutch cable could be about to break! - usually about 15cm from the pedal end...

Subject: perc fan wirring

Question:
i had an electrical fire, only a few days after i'd taken my r5 into my local garage. The fan was running constantly so i had it checked over, the garage replaced some wirring as they said that two wires had fused together to create a constant live feed.
only a 5 days later the wires that has been replaced went up, please refer to pic below:

http://www.rtoc.org/boards/attachment.php?attachmentid=12066&d=1327086819

I need to know what might of happened here and wether the garage is a fault before i splash out for replacement parts.

Thanks Pete

Answer:
the perc fan wiring is well known for going up in flames. mine nearly did 10 years ago - whilst i was staring at it. it wont be the garages fault- its renaults - as they didnt put a fuse in the wiring.
your best bet is to put a few fuses in the +ve and -ve wires near the thermo switch over the top of the turbo.

Subject: car feels like it hops an inch sideways after bump or bend when coming off accel

Question:
Hi Wiz,Hope all well your end matey, any current projects yourself at the min?? if yes good luck and if no then come help me please!

Firstly I must admit im fairly aggressive driver,my 5 is used for work and pleasure my mileage approx 700 miles a week, most of which seems to be on big boost as i keep getting alot of attention driving from essex to london and i generally always oblige.

Standard suspension, full polybushes, top mounts etc, cossie t34, chargecooler, engine mods, 28psi,low pros, tight wheels nuts

Recently feels like i skip or hop an inch maybe at rear of car when i go over a bump or relax off accelerator after boost, mainly on a bend. Its a bit dodge hence ive stopped pushing it and driving like my nan to be safe.

Front end feels tight all over including subframe, i have a tendancy to snap front standard gearbox engine mount once a year, i dont know if this is related to the prob but mounts are fine at the min.

Im suspecting rear of car at the minute and will obviously go over everything, then the front, then engine for play

What would you advise me to look at first please, or what do you think is possibly happening?

Thankyou, speak soon, have a great weekend matey

Answer:
sounds like weight transfer problems. do you have rear seats and spare wheel in place?
also how low is your car? - too low and the suspension wont have much travel - it will hop and move about under deceleration. is your brake bias valve ok? - if you have too much rear bias that can cause the back end to skid about when braking - although not when decelerating. i just hope the rubber bushes/bearing on the rear axle are ok!!!- else its new bushes/ new rear axle time :(

Am i right in thinking that i should connect up the sensor above the turbo, to the main loom then pigy back on these spade connectors to the sensor below the carb. If so where would you recommend i fit a fuse?

Answer:
yes it piggybacks to the under carb sensor.
id fit the fuse in the loom as it passes the side of the head.

Subject: Theres no life in the 5

Question:
I have recently replaced my wiring loom (brand new) and ht leads and knock sensor, after double checking all the connections. I tried to start her up, turned over once, but no life at all now. I have no battery light on the dash on start up, athough got oil light. Battery almost new and fully charged, i know i have power to my starter exsiter (white wire). I have also tried to bump start without any joy what so ever. any idears? thanks

Answer:
ok, to start a 5 you need a working tdc sensor. a negative and positive feed to the ignition unit. these are not part of the engine wiring loom. the starter motor wires consist of positives to the alt and to the battery and also the white wire. please check the earth to the body and to the engine.

Question:
I have my r5 running now, but i fired it up without the air filter or intercooler fitted. (probably need a slap for that) now the turbo is making a burping noise, with filter and intercooler all connected. Have i damaged the turbo in someway? or is there likely to be another cause? Thanks

Answer:
you wont have damaged the turbo. burping noise is the fact you havent got the restrictors in the breather set up. - two restrcitors fit in the T piece. one 1.7mm the other 7mm.

Subject: New engine wont idle

Question:
Hello again Wizard,
I have a new engine fitted into my Dimma Pick-Up project and my mechanic and i are having trouble getting the car to idle. It starts fine with the choke and starts to warm up but it still needs to have some choke or a rev as its wont idle. my mechanic thinks it may be a air leak but we are not too sure. I bought the car literaly as a box of bits so have come a long way but just need to get this last bit sorted. Any ideas ?? :D

Answer:
easy way to check. block off the one way valve that goes to the breather circuit. then take out the idle jet ( big brass screw on drivers side of the carb) and clean it up - make sure no swarf is in the very end of the jet.
that should get it idling ok. - also check the mixture screw is still there. - they like to blow out. you might also have a snapped mixture screw in the carb base....
