Subject: Puffs of black smoke ???

Question:
Hi, I recently got my ren 11 turbo on the road after 13 years of taking it easy. Ive done about 30 miles since back on the road and ive noticed puffs of black smoke from the exhaust. I revved it up and peppered my other car with black wet sooty deposits which was parked behind. Any ideas whats causing this?? Many thanks again

Answer:
bhave you given it an extended drive?- high revs and high speed?- you need to get all the soot that is flaking off out of the exhaust..... get it nice an hot :)

Subject: different exhaust housing

Question:
after some trouble with my turbo I have replaced the exhaust housing

The original numbers were front - M27 A/R.48
rear - 63.

Now the new rear end I picked up has 47 stamped will this make any difference to the turbo's performance?

Answer:
assuming its from the same 'frame' turbo, then it should make it spool up quicker.

Question:
I have a almost standard engine just big down pipe, forge front mount and I think it mite have a group a carb but that is only suspicion I read some where they make tick over lumpy any way in after some more power nothink huge 150-170bhp some where around that wot can the standard engine cope with and wot the best was to achieve this

Answer:
if you run 14psi at the manifold with a std turbo, it will be punchy, about 145bhp though. you would need a bigger turbo to run more power really.

Subject: temp problem

Question:
Hi wiz i have a low fan switch that should open at 78and close at 68 now i have the dash temp and i have after market one that have the sensor in the top hose fit it in a stainless steel pipe now the problem is when the temp gos close to 80 on both of them the fan kicks in like normal but when the fan turn off the temp on the gauges is still on the 80 or close the fan should cut out at 68 and if let the car on like for 25 min on idel the temp gos up a bit more like 90 on the gauges but the fun will not kick in and when it kicks in it will drop the temp on the gauges like to 80 and cut out the car is not over heating in any way and is all bleed good no air locks and i try 2 more switches and whit thermostat and whit out and is still the same any tips

Answer:
ok, my memory may be failing me, but doesnt the water flow along the top pipe into the rad, then out through the bottom. so the temp you are reading is coming out of the block? so the rad fan cools the water, then the engine heats it up.....then you read the hot water?

Question:
hi wizz wot is the best way to fit a oil catch tank and is it hard or do i need to send it to a garage cheers

Answer:
its easy to do.
although there are several ways of doing it.

simplest is to extend the hose that feeds into the turbo inlet telephone hose into a catch tank.

another way is to block the manifold one way valve that the breather system attaches to. then remove the T piece and the short pipe to the turbo inlet telephone hose. turn the hose attached to the top of the black seperator pot the opposite way and direct it to your catch tank.

Subject: Heres a wierd one for you!

Question:
Hello wiz how you? im overlooking something obviously, wondered if you had ideas on this:

5 running really nice and clean and always maintained 1st time starter. left in garage 2 weeks. yesterday turned over fine, but ran like tin of nails, black exhaust smoke very fuelly severe misfire 3 cylinders. so continued to bugger about checking electrical/fuel side of things and eventually ran battery out stop starting engine after each adjustment/check. next day new battery, but refusing to start. so i pull out plugs and yes very wet,dry off, retry with no luck.did re checks and part subs***ution but no luck, checked for spark and i have lost it! new battery now flat due to extensive re checking and trying, battery now on charge! have checked questions and answers etc. my checks also were, compression fine, tdc sensor and wiring replace with known working unit, renix and all wiring replaced for working unit, earths and new battery and starter connections re cleaned, plugs in as new condition after drying, cap as new spring good contacts clean, leads magnecor seem fine, tried alternative king lead with no luck, aei skuttle subs***uted a few times, tdc sensor cleaned then changed, fuses fine, fuel delivery fine, coil i havnt checked as yet mind you, earthed plug no spark. it just seemes strange how overnight it went this way on its own accord, i originally thought damp due to weather but its more than that its spooooky. what am i overlooking?? any help would be really appreciated im so certain its a minor fault but dont know whats caused ignition to gradually fail to zero spark when it was 100% previous. thankyou.ben

aei relay in the scuttle tray....

Subject: Boost limit

Question:
Hi..how much boost do you think can be run on standard compression engine before detonation...providing good afr and good inlet temps

also would fitting water met injection mean you could run a few more psi safely

thanks

Answer:
on a std carb it'll be 14psi at the manifold.
the water injection will stop the detonation, but it still wont make up for lack of fuel in the cylinder.

you'd better off buying an LM1 afr meter or something similar then turning the boost up with your current set up. id say you are running a bit low on the boost side of things.

Question:
thanks for you reply.. but with the carb rejetted what would be roughly the limit before det providing everything else was spot on

Answer:
on a standard engine i've personally run 23psi with no det. my carb float bowl ran out of fuel well before then. i'm pretty sure people have run up to 28psi on std compression, but you would need to perhaps knock the ign timing back a bit.
what exactly have you got in mind?

Question:
I had 20psi in mind with the intention of going a bit higher down the road..was looking into getting water injection first..probally wont ever be rise more than 23 24psi
what did you do to stop the float bowl emptying

Answer:
most people run a 2mm needle jet. - which is available off ebay. you wont need water injection, or even change the CR or the timing for 20psi. the volvo clutch may start to slip after about 23psi though.

Question:
can the car run ok if i remove the two water pipes on the turbo and blank the water from engine im trying to minimize the hoses theres to many.do the two water pipes actually cool the turbo.? cheers

Answer:
yes the water pipes do cool the turbo core and the oil going through the turbo. it shortens the life of the oil from a 6000mile change to a 3000mile change.

Question:
Hi wizard
My R5 dosnt have a anti perc fan fitted and when the car gets up to running temp.it has a flat spot when pulling away from a junction and also not brill to start when warm.if this is down to not having a anti perk fan fitted then how do i sort my carb out so i dont have to fit a anti perc fan.
Thanks.

Answer:
Check the accelerator pump lever on the carb hasn't seized, as this is usually the cause for 'flat spots'/hesitation when trying to pull away.

You shouldn't really need to run an a/p fan with a well set-up carb (ie, one that doesn't give a mega rich cranking/idle afr), albeit you may need a few more cranks of the engine to fire it up when it's been sitting hot for a while.

Subject: After a spirited drive... Running lean

Question:
So was out tonight on a spirited drive, after a short pit stop for 10-15 min pulled away and the 5 started to run majorly lean... AFR Would normally show 12 something on WOT now isn't having any of it more like 15+.

I over hauled the carb a few months back and it was running sweet. Standard setup from memory maybe a slightly smaller main jet. But nothing silly.

Oil pressure fine, not over heating so my thought start with the carb.
What should i check first, second etc...

Im rhinking A blocked main jet? Or needle jet?

Help....

Answer:
recalibrate the afr meter first.....

Question:
The car isn't pulling correctly major hesitation... Would an air leak cause this?

Answer:
it could be a leak.
check the one way valves at the back of the manifold.
check all the boost hoses.
check the dump valve is actually vacuum tight.
check the aei vac module hasnt popped and is leaking.
if they are all ok then it'll be time to strip the carb and clean thoroughly
might be worth checking you havent bent any pushrods?
