Subject: Awaking The Dormant 5 !!!!!!! Question: My renault 5 gt turbo has been hibernating in my garage for approx the last 3 years having a well earned rest. When I put it away it was fully functioning etc. I am thinking of fully restoring it back to how it looked when it was new. Any advice on waking it from the dead would be greatly received eg changing the oil etc. Thanks Answer: put £10 of fresh petrol in it. check water levels. change the oil. start the car. might wanna change brake fluid too. |

Subject: re compomotive Question: Ye I had looked at 15's by 6 wot tyres 195 45. the only thing is it has been lowered but I have just invested in a set of gaz coilovers. will I still get full lock with those wheels one more thing I noticed that the top mounting plates are listed as n.s an o.f on cgb dose it matter thanks for all the wisdom Answer: you may have to run a spacer to get full lock with a 6j wheel. the top mounting plates are not the same, they are handed and cannot be mixed up!! - makes a huge difference to the handling |

Subject: petrol Question: hi wiz is it possible to use e85 petrol in turbo 5s i just heard it has 110 ron i think? ,97/98 ron petrol is impossible to get in ireland .i hope you can help many thanks. Answer: as far as i can see using e85 would reduce performance due to the slow burning nature of ethanol. in which case you'd better stick with the standard RON petrol and retard the ignition using a movable tdc sensor, or shorting out the pinking sensor. |

Subject: strange bump bump noise Question: hi wizard i'm getting a strange bump, bump, noise when driving, seems to be coming from the rear of the car, but it only last for a couple of minutes and then disapears until the car is left overnight and then its back again, does not matter if the road is smooth or bumpy. thanks Answer: check your exhaust, its mostlikely rattling or rubbing off summat. also wobble the rear bumper to see if that is loose. also try the tailgate to see if its closed properly.... |

Subject: Loads of intermittent?? oily smoke Question: Hi wizard, never used your services before so hoping you can put me right. When accelerating on full boost a had loads of oily smoke appear in my mirror, everything still felt fine Afertmarket oil guage still looking good, eased off and the smoke only appeared when coming off the throttle. Arrived at destination popped bonnet, nothing out of the blue seemed obvious. 2hrs later went out for a drive and just as the engine was getting up to temp the oily smell appeared but no smoke. Went home another 2 hrs later and the car was fine, no smoke smell etc. Parked up - engine still running then set off again 10 mins later and was smoking like crazy for about 10 mins then dissapered. Arrived home popped the bonnet and checked the outlet on the turbo, not a drop of oil in site, but noticed the oil breather had a pipe come off and had put oil all over the place. Another 5 was following me and he says my smoke was pretty clear, so he doesnt think it is ring failure Not too clued up about all this so if you can help can you put in simpleton terms please. Many thanks Answer: sorry for the delay. you need to check the turbo shaft for in and out play. also check the intercooler for oil settling in the bottom of it. usually, smoke on overrun indicates turbo is on its way out. |

Subject: Cylinder head mod Question: Have several cylinder heads for R5T, one of them has had an area machined out of each combustion chamber. The machined area is directly opposite the spark plug hole and is quite a large `chunk`. Is this just someone lowering the compression ratio or does it have any other meaning please? All four look very similar and appear to be quite professionally done. Answer: you mean they have cut the squish area out? if they have, then it'll be to reduce the compression ratio. |

Subject: indicators Question: Hello wiz hope all good your end, would like some advice please. My new 5 shell had been outside uncovered for many a year. Have sorted engine etc am just having trouble with front indicators. All connections were rusty as fek but rewired and soldered which sorted most. Earths sorted all over i think. My front indicators only seem to flash when i remove connections to 13mm bolt in slam panel below each headlight. The driver side has 2ring connections to it, and the pass side has 1 ring connection to it. Im thinking this might not be original and possibly old alarm connections or alarm earths??, although all obvious alarm parts removed. With the connections removed, the front indicators work but seem to flash a bit dull too compared to the sides?? stalk and flasher unit fine.Im hoping its simple to sort without auto electrician,im going to chase the connections back today to see where they go,thought id see what you say tho, thankyou Answer: sounds as though you have a +ve wire somewhere you shouldnt. you can never have enough earths - but if the earth connection causes the unit not to work, then that wire must surely be live along the line? |

Subject: Passenger window up button, blows OS side light fuse. Question: With the ignition in the OFF or Aux position, and the side lights on, if I push the passenger window button UP I can hear at least 1 relay pull in, then the OS side lights dim and blow the fuse, also the oil pressure and speedo dials jump around. I will study the Haynes manual wiring diagrams and start to fault find, but any ideas that may cut down the time I need to spend with a Fluke. Cheers Matt Answer: change the switches over to see if the switch is at fault. although its probably a siezed window winder mech/motor |

Subject: box numbers Question: hi there wiz, i have 3 g-boxes phase1 jb3014,phase2 jb3032,and jb3044 im not sure about this one was in my spare car but jumps out of 2 gear i was going to get it rebuilt but thought it might be a 1.1 box or something .hope you can shead some ligt on this for me thank you. Answer: to be honest i've never heard of an 044 box. whether its some old r11 turbo i'm not sure. does the electronic speedo work on it? - if it does then there are very few 80's renault boxes with them, so it must be a turbo derivative! :) |

Subject: no petrol or spark from car Question: can you please tell me were i can get a hold of a fuel pump relay module ref 02374 12v have tried my local renault dealer who said they don t make these parts anymore Answer: if your tdc sensor is faulty then this will cause the petrol and spark not to work. - also check the relay next to the ignition unit in the scuttle tray. if the fuel pump relay was at fault, then you would still get a spark..... ;) |

Subject: fueling or boost truble Question: Hi right i had the carb off and fitted new gasket kit, and fitted new turbo, now car fine to drive at low speed turbo spall's up but not high and rev's up fine when driving. But if you accarate so turbo boost up quick car dose not like it at all my local renault garage had the car they thought it was over boosting but could not sort it out. i'v booked it in to be rolling roaded and tuned hoping there be abit more in the know with what to do, do have you any idea what's gone wrong. Answer: what EXACTLY is happening when you accelerate quickly? misfiring? stuttering? backfiring? slows down? lose all power? turbo boost drops? etc etc? |
| ID: 7342 | Date: 17/04/11 | Member: fishyturbo | Wizard: Sparkie |
|
Subject: fueling or boost Question: stuttering at first then a small backfire if i where to hold my foot down. Answer: ok, does it happen immediately as you quickly [ress the accelerator? - if so it will be you accelerator pump jet. - either the pump mech will be siezed in the side of the carb, or the jet itself is blocked. with the carb top off, you will see a bent piece of brass pointing down the centre of the carb - if you sharply pull the accelerator cable, fuel should squirt straight down the centre of the carb venturi.... if its not this will cause a massive flat spot on acceleration. |

Subject: Afr reads 10 on idle....help Question: So just completed a new engine rebuild. AFR gauge is showing 10 (v rich I know) on idle, bedding in engine so samo from turbo to intercooler isnt connected the carb setup 1.2 main jet .9 air corrector and slightly drilled 2nd stage air corrector screw doesn't seem to effect the reading. (it's not snapped) carb is clean (as far as I know) how can I lean things off at idle? Answer: is your choke flap shut on idle? lol id say a 0.9 is abit small for the air corrector, although this will help fuel at the top end, it will be rich everywhere else. the mixture screw should definately alter the afr though. - have you cleaned out the idle jet by removing and completely cleaning it? the other thing could be is that your afr meter is inaccurate. - does the exhaust actually smell fuelly? if you let an air leak into the manifold via the vacuum pipe, does the afr change? - should go leaner! |

Subject: Idle afr 10 part 2 Question: Okay so Worked the air corrector in stages to 1.2- no change. Let vacum pipe go to air- still nothing.. Idle jet is clean, fairly black smoke out of the back smells like unburnt fuel. afr only changes when I rev- gets bit leaner then... But reverts back. Going to take it off tonight and try clean everything again. as run out of light now. What else could it be? Answer: do a compression check on the engine. maybe low on compression? - leaky exhaust valves? letting air in via the vac pipe should lean it out. with the carb top off, and the car idling, can you see fuel dripping onto the top of the throttle plate inside the carb?- you may need a torch for this. |
