Subject: Tuning manual Question: Does anyone know of any specific tuning manual for the Renault 5 Turbo please? I have such books on Rover V8, Ford X-flow and Pinto, A & B series Leyland, etc, etc. Yes, I am aware that many principles stay the same whatever the engine, but there are some VERY useful tips that relate to each manufacturers weird little engine! Many thanks, PeteB. Answer: nope, no specific manual was produced for the renault engine. most info is actually on this site tbh. |

Subject: dimma kit Question: Hi wiz sent a message a while back now just asking on a shell for a dimma / skeete kit. You asked if the car was going to get painted, an yes i would be painting the car. Thanks for the info lastime but can you tell me the best way to put this kit on please? Does it bond over the orignal pannels ?? Cheers Answer: as far as i was aware, the rear quarter panels get cut away abit, and the panels get bonded onto the metal OE panels. the paint always cracks over the top of join though. |

Subject: group A carb 2 Question: its a 27mm venturi. Answer: ok, you will need an afr meter to really tune your car effectively. - the problem with a bigger ventrui is that it has less suck than a std venturi. - so u need to go abit wild with the jets to achieve what a std venturid carb would easily be able to do. in your thread you started on the same thread, i see no one has talked about this yet. - conventionally you would enlarge the 2nd stage and leave the 1st stage alone. - but you will need to run an AFR meter to really see what you are doing. |

Subject: no anti freeze Question: my engine as pushed my inlet core plug can u say my engine is safe it starts just got wet foot wells how many more core plugs do they av and where Answer: are you sure its the core plug? - the only ones i remember off the top of my head are on the ends of the inlet manifold. - you might of cracked the heater matrix- for the water to be in the footwell. you can start the car and drive it for a short while. - but if its more then 3 mins or so, then it will sieze the engine/ blow the headgasket. you best fill the water system up and see where its leaking from first of all. then get back to me |

Subject: Speedo problem Question: Hi Wiz, My speedo has been working perfectly since i got the car but after hitting a pot hole over the weekend has been dropping to zero and not giving a reading intermittently. Only seems to drop to zero now when hitting bumps but will return to normal given a few mins. What should i look at first? Cheers, Downhill Answer: look by the passenger side suspension turret. there should be a circular connector ith three prongs inside. - squeeze the female tubes together slightly - this should sort ur problems out. |

Subject: coil overs for campus Question: what other gtt parts would i need to fit coilovers to my campus? its 1994. also how hard would it be to fit a dtr 32 webber.. or are there other carbs that could work? what makes me doubtfull is that its got the single point injection. thanxs ollie Answer: if you are leaving the cam alone, then there stands a chance that fitting a carb to your single point manifold will be a waste of time, as im pretty sure the throttle plate on the single point injection is bigger than the narrowest point in the carb.- ie. you get more flow through the single point injection system. doing the tdc sensor wire swap will work nicely to advance the spark and make it more perky. i think ph1 coilovers are what you need for the campus, as i think it will have ph1 shock tops - the nuts are in the centre of the hole- not off to one side. |

Subject: Slow turbo takeoff, mainfold gasket? Question: Hi. I am running standard pressure on turbo, but when I floor the gas pedal, the takeoff is quite slow. An local r5gtt fan told me, that it is quite unusual for a gtt not to "kick" when accelerating. He also told me, that i should have the mainfold gasket checked out, it seems to be leaking. Could these two things be interconnected. Could a faulty mainfold gaslet lead to a slower acceleration? Answer: yes, less exhaust gas to the turbo means it doesnt spool up properly. - get it sorted! |

Subject: probs with getting a couple of gears Question: hi wiz over the last couple of months iv noticed my car is getting harder to get into first and reverse sometimes second is a pain but all the other gears are fine, any ideas what this is ? are my gears worn or could it be a case of trying some fresh gearbox oil if so what oil is best ? many thanks Answer: could be the clutch? try the oil first though. try putting it into gear with the engine off. - i bet it goes in smoothly - in which case it could well be the clutch. |

Subject: probs getting a couple of gears 2 Question: hi i tried putting in gear with engine off and it flew in, so it could be the clutch as you say, only thing bugging me is it was meant to have an uprated clutch on there before a bought the car Answer: uprated clutchess do still wear out. have you tried stamping on the clutch pedal fully a few times to try and adjust the self adjust mechanism? - that can also exhibit signs of clutch wear too.... |

Subject: turns over, stops dead, turns over.......... Question: hello wizard, I am having difficulty getting my 5 started. Upon trying to start, the engine will turn over for few seconds, but will suddenly stop turning over, it jerks and makes a sort of a popping noise from the block, then begins to turn over again, a few seconds later it stops and so on. It seems to be worse if I pump the accelerator. I have managed to get it going, but was misfiring slightly so checked dizzy, leads order etc and they were spot on. now misfiring has gone but still struggles to turn over smoothly and is a mission to start. Any ideas? thanks Answer: check that the timing sensor is ok. do a compression to check to make sure your engine internals are ok too. also are you running a choke? - what spec is ur carb? |

Subject: Engine numbers Question: Have 2 spare engines and would like to clarify their status if possible. No idea if RTOC have a data base for this sort of enquiry but will ask anyway. Engine numbers are K598160 and M598160. If you can't help I will understand and I apologise for taking up your valuable time. I do know how it feels , I get 20-30 calls a week about track day and kit car engines, electrics and bodywork. Common sense is not that common! Regards, Pete Brown. Answer: clarify their status? no such database exists in r5 circles. :( |

Subject: waste gate chatter Question: went out in car last week and and it was running great i have a stage 3 hybrid with a T3 actuator there are no dump valves on car and the waste gate was so loud. Went out in it today and the waste gate dosent seem so loud it pulls on boost but theres something not quite right. it holds boost on gauge and checked for leaks all ive done to the car before i went out was change oil uprated NGK spark plugs and fitted an external oil cooler. Answer: check that the turbo is ok. check in and out play.... also what oil did you use? wastegate chatter is caused by air backing up in the boost hose and escaping through the inlet of the turbo.... changes to the turbo could cause the noise to alter... |

Subject: waste gate chatter 2 Question: Turbo is brand new from universal turbo,s only 2 months old checked for play in shaft and its ok. I used 10W/40 oil. it seems strange that it was ok before i changed plugs and oil cooler. Answer: hmmm, a turbo can get knackered in 30seconds, so 2months doesnt really mean alot. ;) but if you are sure that its ok... check the pipework carefully to the actuator for any splits, also check the actuator bracket to see if its not come off the turbo core. |
