Subject: steam Question: hi wiz,2 question please,[1] i have steam coming out of tailpipe and no3 plughole when car heats up i had the head skimmed and a grp a gasket fitted ,would the head or liner be cracked,i have a spare engine if i need it .[2] the head bolts on the spare engine have cbc 10.9 on them are they standard or uprated as i be 18 psi Answer: either could be cracked. you need to do a compression check on the engine. original headbolts are actually 8.8's so 10.9's are slightly more uprated. |

Subject: Started badly chattering today?! Question: hello! after being stuck in traffic for an hour today, the 5 has started chattering badly. the engine has a dump valve fitted which usually makes the usually "psshh" noise but now I have hardly any spool noise and just chatter. the car has an open air filter too. The idle also now has raised up a bit by around 500rpm. Sadly I have no boost gauge at the minute either to see whats going on as the engine is in a '96 Campus shell. It has been fine until today. Would this be vac pipe related or dump valve maybe? Thanks Chris Answer: check your vac hoses and dump valve diaphram for splits. |

Subject: Started badly chattering today - Part Two Question: Ok I have tried removing dump valve, and blocking the pipe and the vac hose: The same The forge bleed valve on car: wound it all the way in and no difference, all the way out, no difference. No idea if this would affect chattering? What vac pipes am I looking at inspecting? Or could the actuator of had it? Thanks :) Answer: if you remove the dump vave it will chatter. you need to check the vac side of the d/v - suck it and see if its leaking and all the pipework to and from the d/v and the aei all the way to the inlet manifold. |

Subject: cam Question: what are the numbers on a standard cam i have one with 270 stamped on it so is this an uprated or standard cam ta Answer: you are looking in the wrong place. do not look along the length of the cam, you need to be looking at the end. if it says C U then its standard, if its had work done to it, then its stamped in that end. |

Subject: Head Gasket Question: My mates car was smoking badly so did a compression check and got a load of mayo coming out of spark plug hole loads of water in rocker cover, gonna strip it and change head gasket. Is there anything else we have to check while the head is off? liners?? How do you get the water out of the oil ways etc??? Many Thanks Wizard Answer: check liners for cracks, check the head for flatness. after you have refitted it, run cheap oil round the engine, for 20mins then drain and refill with good stuff. |

Subject: short shifter Question: how do i fit a short shifter took old gear stick out but on the old gear stick is a cable to lift it into reverse while there s no cable on the new shifter my head is wrecked trying to figure this out Answer: all the cable does is move a block, which allows the shifter to be moved further over so you can select reverse. it should be able to shifted into reverse if the new lever has no block on it. failing that you will have to remove some of the stop, which will allow you to move it further to the left - you get me? |

Subject: Low humming sound getting worse and gear oil leak? Question: Noticed a low humming / whurring recently while driving and its got worse this week. The best way to describe the noise is "droaning" and its coming from the passenger front wheel. The noise however disappears when you steer left but comes back when in straight line and turning right. I noticed an oil patch or two when I left work and it smelt and looked like gearbox oil. Is this noise and the oil related? I don't understand why it disappears when you steer left. All tyres are fine. Selects gears as normal. But this noise had doubled in volume in the last day or two! Thank you in advance :) Chris Answer: your wheel bearing is shot. that causes the rumbling noise. they are not related. clean the underside of the gearbox with brake cleaner, and see where the oil is leaking from, and seal it with silicone sealant |

Subject: boost gauge readings at idle Question: hi there, i have just put an aftermarket boost gauge into my r5 gtt, the car is started and idles at 20 inHG, is this correct? i wasnt sure you see, and i dont actually understand what inHG means. many thanks. Answer: yes, that is fine. inHG means inches of mercury. its an old measure of vacuum - ie mercury gets sucked down a tube. the more vacuum , the further down the tube it goes. |

Subject: adjustable top mounts Question: i have ph2 coilovers and the top mounts are spherical type and i dont know if they they vary or even make them for ph1's Answer: are the holes where the hub bolts up to the bottom of the shock parallel to the shock body, or is the bottom hole slightly further away from the shock than the top hole. - ph2's are like that, ph1's are parallel. have you checked to see that you have the correct wishbones fitted? - GSF had some longer ones in that were being sold as r5 ones... :( |

Subject: wont hold revs when idleing Question: hi wizard i brought a e reg r5 gtt its had an engine rebuild 3000miles ago and basically i start it up, turn on the choke and it sits happily for a min or two then the revs will drop slowly to nothing and cuts out. if i drive away after turning the engine on, i put the clutch pedal down or stop at a junction, i lose all my revs even if i have the choke on. once the engine has warmed up, the problem becomes a bit more intermitant but still loses the revs. sometimes pushing the choke in and pulling it out again gets the revs going, but half the time it will lose the revs again. thank you :) Answer: take out the idle jet - the big brass screw on the drivers side of the carb. take it apart and clean out the small hole at the end of the jet. sounds like there maybe a blockage there. also check the idle mixture screw and undo it anticlockwise a turn or two and see if it makes it run better. |

Subject: Leaking under seat Question: Hi wiz. When it rains I have lots of water under the passenger seat and a bit in the foot well behind the passenger seat I can't find any leaks or trace of water coming in through the door or window. I have checked underneath and can't find any holes either. Do you have any suggestions of where it could be coming from? Answer: leave the door card off. when it starts raining, watch where the water drips. a favourite route is: down window, past furflex, down rubber underwindow strip, drip onto top of speaker, through door onto door seal - then into car. |

Subject: What engine oil? Gearbox stabiliser? Question: Hi Wizard, I recently purchased a phase 2 R5 and although the engine oil looks to be in good order I’m going to change it for piece of mind. What weight oil would you recommend? Some of the performance mods fitted are a t25, viper induction kit and a pace charge cooler if this alters the recommendation at all. Also when underneath the front of the car I noticed there is a bolt missing from the gearbox stabiliser bar rendering it completely useless. I’m hoping I’ll come across a suitable bolt soon enough but don’t want to drive the car to hard if its crucial to have this stabiliser in place? Cheers Answer: 10w60 or 15w50 dont worry about the gearbox stabiliser. :) |
