Subject: piper cam afr Question: what should the afr on idle be on a piper 285 cam. does it need to be richer than normal. Answer: not sure on the actual AFR reading it should be. however, most heavily cammed cars need the idle to be quite rich, just to get the engine to idle correctly. - smell the exhaust of rally cars on idle.... |

Subject: do i need bigger jets........... Question: hi wiz i have a stage 1 turbo for a r5 gt turbo,do i need to up jet the carb when i run it at 14-15 psi i think it will be around 170-180 bhp Answer: is that 14psi at the carb top or the manifold? if its at the manifold, yes you would need slight re jetting. 170bhp will be very unlikely unless you have a performance cam fitted too. more like 140-150bhp.... |

Subject: Fitting morette lights Question: Hi wiz, just bought a pair of morette light for the r5, I have three bulbs on each. The standard head light have two bulbs. The outside lights I assume are fog lights- how do I wire them in as it didn't come with and wiring?! I don't currently have any standard fogs on the car.. Could I use that wiring for the 3rd bulb on the morette's thanks Chris Answer: errrr..... the standard headlamp has: side lamps dipped beam full beam one bulb has dipped and full beam integrated. the morettes use a seperate bulb for each thing. |

Subject: Morette continued Question: Hi wiz, I must have something different then - I have three different bulbs. One for dipped, one with a dual main and full beam, and a third.... Answer: hmmm, ok, i can't see one being a fog light. - you may have to do a bit of rewiring. or use the unused light holes for air intakes. |

Subject: starts, runs for 5 sec then cuts out!!!!! Question: hi wiz, my car has been running fine all weekend. Started and drove steady for 1-2 mile, then put foot down, it picked up came on boost then started to die, i pulled over and tryed to rev the car it wont it just trys to cut out!! if i restart the car with no gas it runs, idles nice for 5-7 secondas then cuts out, but restarts fine and does the same, if i try to rev it, it cuts out, if i put choke on and try to rev it, it trys to rev for a bit longer but still cuts out. I have checked spark and all wiring i have loads of fuel in it, i have changed filter, do you think it cud be fuel pump or relay??? i think i might have been pushing standard fuel pump as its been running high boost and fuel pressure, also where is fuel pump relay?? thanks tom Answer: the fuel pump relay is located under the passenger side footwell, lower cowl plastic - next to the relay board - its usually hanging off the top right hand corner. its a big 6 pin relay. black with a grey plug. as for the stop start problem - put a clear fuel filter inline with the carb - or just pull the fuel line off and put it into a jar. - then start the car - you need to see if fuel is being delivered to the carb correctly. the its a case of working backwards. fuel filter, fuel pump, relay, aei, tdc sensor, aei relay. |

Subject: PISTON RINGS Question: Hi wiz, i'm thinking of changing the piston rings in my engine. My question is do you need to take out the liners to change the rings? Answer: no, you can clamp the liners into the block with nuts and washers. then push the conrod and piston up out of the engine. - then change the rings, and use a ring compressor to pop the piston back into the liner. however its best to lightly hone the liner else the ring will not bed into the liner properly and cause blow by problems. |

Subject: Stuttering on acceleration Question: Hey Wiz, my car is becoming a serious headache, I have had a problem with it since I bought it 6 months ago. It just has no power on acceleration sometimes it's ok but most of the time it isn't. The turbo spools up fine but the revs don't climb very fast. It's also seems to be overfuelling quite badly. Afrs on idle are a reasonable 14 but normal driving and on wide open throttle is around 11. Compression is fine. I have changed the fuel filter and spark plugs. I have tried a different carb but no difference!! Do you have any other ideas, was thinking tdc sensor but I have visually inspected that and looks fine. Also when I turn off the engine it let's off a massive backfire!! This is really starting to get me down now. Can you give me some suggestions please buddy. Answer: ok, the revs will be held back by the fact that ur overfuelling. there are a few things that can effect this: - do you have a performance cam fitted? - do you have a standard (proven standard - measured with drill bits) carb ? i'd suggest that maybe your corrector is too small. also- what boost are you running at WOT? - what turbo is it (t2 0.35 back end with a t25 front) if the tdc sensor was fault, it probably wouldn't fire at all. there is another thought thats popped into my head. check your manifold gasket it ok. - if it leaks you may get fuel being pushed into the exhaust - this would also cause popping on overrun etc - as it lets air into the exhaust. - just check it.# also suck on the pipe that goes to the aei - check to see if it holds a vacuum - if its buggered, then this can affect the advance curve of the aei on boost - hence sluggish. |

Subject: Stuttering on acceleration 2 Question: Thanks wiz I will have a look at everything you have suggested tomorrow. I run a k-tec 180 turbo and a piper 270 cam at wot I only run 11 psi boost. The car is Jesus' old White track car 'Nicole' I'm wondering if upping the boost might help matters as maybe the engine is too heavily specced for running such a low boost. Also yes I have checked all carb jets with a micro drill bit and it's all standard. I changed to a/c jet from a standard 125 to a 100 but has made no difference. When you say suck the pipe to the aei to make sure it holds vaccum I assume you mean to make sure I can't keep sucking and sucking air?? Answer: change the air corrector back to 125. a 100 air corrector will make it richer up the top end. - as it doesnt let as much air in through hole to mix with the fuel in the enricher. re: sucking the pipe - pull the pipe off the inlet manifold - under the carb. - then suck it. - you should be able to suck for a bit, then suck no more! - if you can carry on sucking (oooerrr) then you have a leak in the pipe or the aei vac module. |

Subject: Where does the restrictor go?? Question: Hey wiz, was wondering where the 1.7mm restrictor goes in the breather pipe from the inlet manifold to the t piece. Does it go in the t piece it's self or is anywhere in the pipe ok. Reason I'm asking is that I have removed the pipe and the restrictor is half way down the straight part and the pipe is split at the same place. Wonder if this has been causing my rubbish acceleration performance and overfuelling??? Answer: the 1.7mm restictor goes in the that goes from the inlet manifold to the T piece - but it fits in the t piece itself. i'd check your one way valves are still only working one way - they shut off when the car is on boost! |

Subject: carb piping Question: hi wiz i am still looking at different things that could be causing problems with my car do you have a pic of where the piping on the carb should go to as my has been messed about with, also hulk has asked about the restrictor, shud mine have this???? Also you said about one way valves where are these and where do they go too??? thanks Answer: do you have a haynes manaual, as the carb connections are actually shown on a diagram. all gtt's should have 2 restrictors in the breather system, 1.7mm from the inlet to the T piece, and a 7mm in the pipe from the T piece to the turbo inlet pipe. - however, some people block that part of the breather system off from the inlet manifold with a bolt. the one way valves are under the carb - attached to the inlet manifold pointing towards the bulkhead. - one of them has the servo vacuum pipe attached to it. if you ever undo them - DO NOT TIGHTEN THEM UP TOO MUCH- THEY WILL SNAP OFF IN THE INLET MANIFOLD!-literally nip them up. |

Subject: Low compression pistons Question: Hi Wizz, I have just got a phase 2 5gt and the last owner told me it was running major boost but the headgasket went so he has had that replaced with a group A gasket and made the car totally standard... What i wanted to know is what do i need to get this car up to 220BHP? Answer: why have you set 220bhp as a target? you need to measure the head depth first and get back to us. too thin and it will cause repeated problems. |

Subject: headgasket!!!! Question: hi wiz, I have blown headgasket on my car!!! forgot to re pipe wastegate up lol. i fitted a group A gasket last time, who does metal upgraded gaskets???? Answer: no one does metal upgraded headgaskets. the only real super duper uprated ones are the Spresso ones that demon tweeks sell, and they have seperate firerings- which apparently they are a pain to keep on the liners whilst you put the head on. probably best stick a standard grp A one on, and sort your fuelling and pipework issues out. |

Subject: Gearbox Upgrade Question: Hello, I need a gearbox upgrade i have 265hp and want to fit nos on so will be running serious power through the transmision. Other than a £9000 sadev box what other options are there?. I heard its possible to fit a 172 box and uprate the gears and diff is this true?. Can you help please. Answer: as far as i'm aware the sadev box was designed for clios, which produce alot less torque than a gtt.... i think there uprated gearset for the 172, and i know this box does fit the gtt lump - so ur theory is entirely possible. |

Subject: Help with setting up a incar boost controller Question: Hey Peeps, My mate is wanting me to help set up his incar boost contoller! He is setting it all up as in the diagram below http://www.rtoc.org/files/Technical%...controller.jpg now i know that the 3 way bleed valve under the bonnet is used to set the maximum boost ceiling and the actuator on the turbo is set at the lowest/standard boost. my question is, how do you set the in car controller to adjust the minimum to maximum boost?? do I just make sure the in-car controller is wound on its lowest setting before i set up the bleed valve under the bonnet??????? Any help would be great!! ps, I am fully aware that it is Sooooooo much better just setting the boost on the actuator arm as the carb can only fuel properly for one boost setting, I have already told my mate this but he would still like to have it installed anyway, and i promised i would help him set it up with my Lm1 as he helped me change a clutch in my tractor a few weeks ago. just an answer to my question would be brilliant Thanks wiz Answer: the link doesnt work mate. you need to remember how the bleed valves work. you need to open the incar bleed valve full, then set the under bonnet one to the max you want. then when you close the incar one, the boost will drop off as you start to affect the leaked off air from the under bonnet valve.... u follow? |

Subject: turbo charging a williams Question: i am attempting to fit a t28 turbo to my clio williams. my mate says i need a 2 bar map sensor where can i find this on my engine and where can i get the new replacment one to fit Answer: Hi there, Well he's right! Your existing sensor will be a 1 bar sensor. That is to say that it can read vacuum all the way upto atmospheric pressure - IE, 1 bar's worth. A 2 bar sensor will read the same vacuum as before but it can also read upto 1 bar of positive boost pressure, hence it's called a 2 bar sensor. A 3 bar sensor would read upto 2 bar of boost, and so on. Search eBay and the like for a GM type 2 bar map sensors, you should have no problem finding one. The GM types should have the same 3 pin 'round pin' connector that you have on your Clio loom. Ofcourse, you know that you will need your ECU re-mapping or atleast a turbo chip that is designed to match a specific set of larger injectors. Henk @ www.fastchip.nl used to offer turbo chips for standard ECU's, he no longer advertises them but perhaps may still do them if you contact him direct. Wiz |

Subject: replacing rotar arm and bad hesitation Question: Hi wiz, thanks for answering all my previous questions, its been a big help. I still have a really annoying bad hesitation issue under load, when the engine is cold its fine but once warm it sometimes hesitates really badly when i put my foot down almost like the carb is flooding, if i use part throttle it doesnt seem so bad, some times it does it and sometimes its fine... i`m only running 11psi at the manifold at the mo I have replaced the following different working carb new plugs new fuel filter checked the tdc wire(seems ok) all pipes are fine breathers and vacuum restrictors still in place manifold gaskets are fine done suck test on aei and return valves...all fine afrs are all fairly good but its obviously overfuelling slightly as when engine is turned off it still backfires from my sidey do you think its more ignition or fuel? i have not replaced the dizzy cap yet i have one of those stupid 90 degree caps how do I replace the rotar arm does it just pull off and push a new one on??? thanks Wiz Answer: yes the rotor arm just pulls off. i'd advise getting an afr meter and turning the boost up. infact havent you been advised this several times on the boards? |

Subject: Head gasket Question: A mate of mine has just removed the cylinder head to repair what was thought to have been a failed gasket. On removing head the tops of two of the pistons have some damage and also the bottom of the head. What may of coused this and how should he go about repairing this mess. Cheers wiz. Answer: is it badly pitted? - if so then its detonation - you need to measure the head depth! 72.5mm is the minimum! also get rid of the extra timing advance mod in this weather.... the proper way is to replace the pistons and the head. the typical renault 5 owner way is to bang a new headgasket on it and run it until you break something else. |

Subject: grp a carb Question: hi wiz thanks for your reply so quick on the grp a carb ,would it be be better if i swapped the gets on my standered carb over to the grpA carb ,one thing i noticed is the little brass screw in jet at the top of my standard carb is larger than the one on the grp a carb ,i was looking through the articles and these carb and jettings are a minefield, sorry to wreck your head Thanks very much . Answer: its not wise to swap over the standard jets to the grp A. you may well end up blowing up. - the venturi- the hole down the middle of the carb will be bigger on the grp A and this means you need different jets. what boost are you running? |

Subject: grp A carb Question: its about 14 to 15 i think, i have a incar adjustable boost with a spider valve when i screw the incar out i full turn the turbo needle on the dash goes right round to end of the fine lines on the gauge, Answer: you really need an aftermarket gauge to see what boost you are actually running. the other problem is that at 15psi you really do not need a group A carb.- a tweaked standard carb will drive better, fuel better and be generally better! |
