Subject: turbo oil restrictor

Question:
Hi wiz i have a gt28r and like to now if i need to run it whit a restrictor on the c1j

Tank you for the help

Answer:
No, simply. I've always read and been told the hyp about running restrictors on rollerbearing turbo's, but never understood it considering the design of the feed to the catridge. Some people just don't want to take your advice though...

A rollerbearing core has a built in restrictor.

Subject: Seat location and steering wheel height

Question:
Hi Wiz, I hope you can help me with these (probably simple) problems I have. The first is i have bucket seats on subframes with runners, (these seats are side mounts). I the problem is the seats just dont go back far enough. Im only 6` so its not like Im the tallest of people.

Also have you got any ideas as to whether it is possible to lower the angle or height of the steering wheel as I have extended it toward me slightly.

Many thanks JIB

Answer:
so why not just drill the holes that mount the subframe to the floor further away? or redrill the holes in the seat/ side mount so that the seat is further back?

only way to drop the steering wheel is if you remove the lower cowelling of the steering column and space the column away from its brackets. - however the ignition barrel will drop below the hole in the dash and the lower cowl will not fit properly again! only other way is to higher the seat with spacers - this will lower the steering wheel. lol!

Hey wiz
just bought a charge cooler off another member recently. What liquid should I charge? Surely not water? Coolent then, but what type herewithhere can I get this juice....? Emailed pace no answer.

Answer:
most use water with abit of antifreeze in. - however i'd recommend water with methanol to aid heat transfer. - maybe you could use that water wetter stuff redline make - to aid heat transfer. - the methanol reacts with the aluminium in the charge cooler i think.....

Subject: single port actuator

Question:
hello i got a single port actuator and i dont know what pressure it can take do you know

Answer:
how do you mean, what pressure it can take?
if its a replacement for the one you have on the car at the moment, then pull the actuator arm by hand and see if it feels stiffer. - a sure sign that its designed for higher boost levels than what you are running now.

to be honest if you run an PRV - ball valve type it doesnt matter what the spring is inside the actuator, as the ball valve takes care of the inital boost control. - maybe the way to go if you have issues?

Question:
the car wont start immobiliser is fine theres fuel brand new tdc sensor new fuel pump relay turns over but wont fire up car was running fine until i came to start it after abut 1 hour of it sitting now nothing

Answer:
this is the problem with the newer cars. - you need to have it plugged into a diagnostic machine. not just an eobd machine. - the 16pin socket is under the ashtray in the centre console - lift it upwards.

Subject: can't remove igniton barrel

Question:
I am trying to change the upper steering column assembly. Have un done all the bolts and screws to remove the assembly but cannot work out how to separate the two sections of the lock barrel completely. Have separted the lock from the ignition switch but the two parts are still connected with a strip of metal that slides apart when they are separated.
Thank you.

Answer:
ok, you are not making much sense here.
have you taken the ignition barrel out of the housing?

do you realise that the housing is bolted to the column using a special bolt, that snaps its head off when tightened? - so you have to drill what looks like the 'stud' out to remove the housing. then you need to try and get the threaded section out of the one part of the housing and then use a normal bolt.

Subject: Last few wires

Question:
HI Wiz could you please tell me what the short yellow wire that comes off the alternator and goes to a blade connector near the fan switch is?

Also am i right in thinking the green wire and orange wire in the same area are for the fan switch?

Would you also know if it matters which way round the bottom header tank hoses go as i have relocated the tank and am now running a phase2 setup and have got a bit confused.Hope you can help.
Thanks

Answer:
have you tried looking at haynes wiring diagrams for this? have you got all the wires connected to the relay ok? - im sure i remember there is an orange and a green to the rad fan switch.

as for the header tank bottom hoses, it doesnt matter, as they are interchangeable.

Subject: volvo conversion belts

Question:
hello i am in the process of doing the volvo conversion and iv got stuck at the power steering pump belt,
wot belt should i use if i get rid of the pump
should i look for a volvo belt wot dos not have power steering
thanks steve

Answer:
Hi Steve

I've only ever done a few of these conversions, and I don't remember belt details off the top of my head sorry. But, it's not a volvo belt, you just pick the right size belt from Halfords, or somewhere that does the whole range of 5pk / 6pk type belts. You need to count the grooves in your bottom pully and alternator and use a belt to match. (it'll be 5 or 6 ribs on the belt). You can check the length by using a length of string around the pully and alternator to simulate a belt, then measure the string. Belts are sold as "5pk x 860" which means 5 ribs, 860mm circumference.

Hope that helps, Wiz.

Subject: limited slip diff

Question:
Hi wiz
I was wondering where i can get a limited diff for the 5? I have seen alott of people on here with them and cant seem to find any. I was looking at a torsion diff as its suposed to be the best for track and road is this true? Is there any diffs from other cars that will fit?

Answer:
Hi there,

Unfortunately I have no experience with fancy diff's at all, but Pelequin, quaife and gripper all offer some kind of diff for the R5. Better to post something on the boards, lots of the sprint type guys and track day enthusiasts have better experience with those sort of things.

Subject: Massively over fuelling problem

Question:
Hey Wiz, always knew my car was overfuelling badly it didnt used to be too bad but its gradually got worse.

I suffer from the following

1, poor fuel comsumption
2, badly sooted plugs
3,car bogs down under load
4, engine gives off a massive back fire when i turn the engine off

Hooked up a wideband today and the afr readings were shocking

normal driving is around 12.8- 13.5

WOT is 10.6- 11.5!!

would leaning off the mixture screw make any difference??
what things would cause the carb to over fuel as bad as this.

I havent looked at what size jets are in the carb yet, previous owner just told me the carbs set for standard boost but looking at the afr reading it must have a massive main jet in there surely

really really confused

Answer:
there is no way that is a std carb.
you need to take it apart and check the size of the main jet, the air corrector, the 1st and 2nd stage enrichers. - preferably with a micro drill bit set to see exactly what size they have been drilled to. fiddling with the mixture screw only adjusts idle mixture.

Subject: Dimma, shell?

Hi wiz, i have a Dimma kit but i am looking for a really good shell to put it on, i have seen a few campus but will this be ok because i no it would need gt doors an wt about the rest of the plastic on the rear qrts? You see i dont want to wreck a alreadly good shelled gt turbo :) Thanks

Answer:
once you take the plastic off the campus, there are small bits of metal welded to the shell- that look like nail heads- grind them off . you can use the campus doors too - just grind the 'nail heads' off - you are gonna have the car painted aren't you?

Subject: Lumpy, Irratic, Idle

Question:
Hey Wiz, My 5 has just had a new engine, was set up on k-tecs rolling road and was running sweet. All of a sudden the revs were all over the place and it would cut out. Swapped the AEI unit,TDC sensor, fitted a new Fuel filter, dizzy cap, rotor arm, ignition leads, turbo actuator, the carb was new bout a year ago from webcon the fuel pump was uprated bout 6yrs ago and I have taken the idle jet out and cleaned it etc. But still it is real lumpy and irratic on idle and won't run right and cuts out?? Do you think the Knock sensor could be a fault and messing up the timming or could it be old fuel as it is garraged all through winter???? Please please help and sorry for the long story :-)

Answer:
ok, put £20 of new fuel in it first.
see if it runs ok.
i'm assuming that the spark plugs are ok?
you also need to check for air leaks. - with the car running, spray carb cleaner around the carb area - if the revs rise then you have a leak there.
only other option is borrow a known good carb and just try it.

Subject: Lumpy, Irratic, Idle

Question:
Hello wizard, Thanks for the advice, I followed your instuctions and it made no difference and the plugs are new. Thought I would have another look at the idle jet before swapping for another carb and noticed that on my old carb it has a brass insert inside the idle jet but not on the newish one from webcon( is this needed ) Put it in anyway started the car still lumpy idle so I went to undo the idle jet again and as soon as i touched it the idle was smooth drove the car and then lumpy idle and cutting out again touched the idle jet again and it was fine? Do you know what the fook is going on??? I have fitted a new rubber washer to the idle jet also
Thanks for all your help so far wizard

Answer:
forget about the idle jet insert.
does your mixture screw have the small rubber O ring on?
also try and wrap PTFE tape over the thread.
if that doesnt work, then try this....

get a can of WD40, use the straw and remove the idle jet. - push the straw into the hole left in the carb as far as it can go. - then spray the WD40 for 20seconds. - replace the idle jet then run the car. - seems to clean the carb out usually.

Subject: How can I stop my carb running rich.???

Question:
Hi Wiz. I have a problem and cannot get my carb running anything but rich. First of all my carb is completely standard as are all the jets. I was running an afr on idle of around 9 which is obviously not good. So I have cleaned the carb all the jets fitted a new mixture screw. After fitting the carb back on I was getting better afr on idle of around 14.0 but after a drive it is now back to around a afr of 12. :0(

I am getting sick of this now and everytime I turn the engine off I get a massive backfire and a huge flame out my side exit which is a bit scary when I'm at a petrol station. I have wound the mixture screw nearly all the way in trying to get it leaner but it won't. I don't have fuel dribbling down the venturi either. It idles fine and I run the cup mod.

Also i am only running 11 psi boost at present wound turning up the boost make my afrs a bit leaner?? What else can I try to stop running rich??????

Many thanks buddy.

Answer:
try a different carb. simplezzzz.

maybe it's running to lean and getting the exhaust to hot

Subject: camp*** sledge hammer.

Question:
ive got a 25k mile camp*** & want to turbo it due to it be'ing gutless & having the worst efi & running (idling) problems ive ever seen. i understand i cant use the head but what about the std pistons? what would happen if i ran it at camp*** compression? if this aint possible could the pistons be stuck in a lathe and be skimmed? or could i use a thicker ed gasket? cheers geeza.

Answer:
you migh be able to use the head - depends how late the campus is and whether is has the extra row of manifold studs on- that the gtt exhaust manifold can attach to. you also need the gtt inlet manifold and carb. - you then need to check the head depth to - or you could use several head gaskets to bring the comp ratio down. the pistons probably need changing as the N/A ones tend to have a very large oil scraper drain hole - i.e its a much weaker piston. you'll also need the fuel pressure reg and other bits too...

Subject: spark plug thread in the head stripped.

Question:
it would seem i have tightened a spark plug a little bit too much and now it just will not grip. is there a spark plug the same but with a bigger thread. or, what are the changes a heli coil will work. ??

Answer:
no spark plugs are available with a slightly larger thread. - you will definately have to helicoil. - it works well.
you could try it with the head on, but make sure the piston is at the top of the stroke, and the at least one of the valves for the cylinder is open. after drilling and tapping etc- the vac the cylinder out with a strong vacuum - hopefully you will pick up all the bits of aluminium.
if thats a bit risky, then take off the head.
