Subject: rollpins

Question:
hi wizard im going to take my engine out on my 5 turbo on a article some 1 posted it said rember to take out rollpins please could u explain what they are and why its important to take them out also when takeing the engine out do i laeve the gear box bolted on to it and hoist them out together thanks sorry lol im new to all this

Answer:
the rollpin holds the drivers side driveshaft onto the gearbox. - you need a parallel punch and a hammer to knock it out of the hole its pushed into. you will need to do this if you are hoping to lift the whole engine and gearbox out. - unless you split the inboard gaiter from the joint.
its probably easier as a first timer to take the lot out, rather than leave the box in the car and lift just the engine out. - well thats how i started anyway.

Subject: cup breather mod

Question:
hi at the moment i am having trouble with my car idling, i have fully rebuilt the carb all new gaskets set acc arm t 5mm with drill bit, checked for any air leaks, swopped aei unit, fuel pump relay, the car will only idle at 1000 rpm with the mixture screw wound out 5 turns from fully in instead of 2 and half what it should be.it will only idle when temp guage is half way but runs lumpy it will only idle ok if the mixture screw is nearly wound out all the way which is too rich. i noticed when i take the oil breather filter off it runs lumpier and when i block it it runs smoother but still lumpy. im going to do the cup breather mod, do i take the one way valve out of the inlet manifold and block the inlet manifold with m8 bolt or do i leave the one way valve in the head and tap an m8 bolt into the end of one way valve where pipe goes on. would closing the acc pump arm with a smaller drill bit make a difference or should it be left at 5mm.sorry for the essay ive been messing for days now with the car and cant get it to run right

Answer:
leave the one way valve in the manifold. - put a small tube off the back of it and block that instead. the one way valve has a tapered thread on it and an m8 bolt will not seal the hole properly. - they also like to snap when you put them back in and tighten em too much.

you problem will stem from debris, detritus, bits, or even crap that has settled in the idle jet. - you will need to take it out and clean it out, majing sure that you can see daylight through the end of it CLEARLY!- just pull it apart to do that. - remember its the big brass screw on the drivers side of the carb. always get blocked after rebuilding. - as the blockage effectively makes the jet smaller, you have to wind the idle mixture screw all the way out to compensate.

http://voiture-occasion.vivastreet.fr/annonces-voiture-occasion+montmedy-55600/super-5-gt-turbo/14398829

Answer:
a clio bonnet does not fit a 5. its a 5 bonnect designed to look like a cio one. laguna grills? - they are classics now - put an advert on the classifieds as someone will have one. - think gt tuning used to sell them.

Subject: tapits

Question:
hey wizard my tapits are tap tap tap when cars runing im goning to hav the engine rebulit wiil that cure them is that a area thats covered in a full rebulid thanks

Answer:
the tap tap tap, will not stop stop stop with a rebuild.
you need to adjust the gap gap gap on the tappets (10thou on exhaust, 8thou on inlet assuming std cam). and hopefully this will stop the noise.
although please remember, the engine design is 40years old, and they do sound tappetty anyway.

Subject: Cracked turbo

Question:
I noticed that there is a crack leading down my turbo from the top oil feed. When taking out the top oil feed pipe and looking down the hole it seemed to be the top pipe when screwed in seperates the oil and water in the turbo, it is what it looks like to me is this true. also have you heard of a Garret A/R.48M27 turbo, believed to be off a Volvo as it came with my car when I brought it and obviously if it doesn't require too much modernising to put on to an R5 i'd like to replace the broken one with this. Is it worth a go or do you suggest different. Thanks, Andy

Answer:
ok, your description of the crack is slightly confusing me. the core of the turbo has oil passing through it and around that core is a water jacket that has two connectors attached. is the turbo smoking blue smoke or white smoke, leaking water, leaking oil or all of them?
if its not doing anything like that, are you sure its a crack and not a casting mark?
as for the other turbo, i take it those are the numbers on the casting? you need to take a look inside the housing, where the exhaust enters the turbo, and see if there is a cast mark there. eg .35 AR and get back to me. if the mounting flange is the same and the turbo compressor outlet is in the right place you could be onto a winner. however, its usually better to stop funking about and buy a new one, that is already adapted.

Subject: Speedo

Question:
Sorry if its been asked over and over again. When i bought my 5 it was not working. Could it be the speed sensor on the gearbox or just the dash in your opinion and any way of checking. There is £70 difference in my eyes!

Answer:
always start with the simplest thing first. - check the clocks and the connector especially! its also worth undoing the connector halfway up the cable and squeezing the female part of the bullet connectors together. (this used to sort mine out.) failing that, look at the lower part of the speedo cable, its rare for the top part to fail.

Subject: heater squeak

Question:
hi when i turn my heater on the fan is make a nasty noise and when its full its full its squeaking like mad any idea how to fix it or just get a new one??

Answer:
pull off the scuttle tray covers, then undo the two plastic screws that hold the grill over the fan. pull the fan straight upwards, then try and oil the fan bearings. if not, just buy a new one. - the cricket/grasshopper noise is quite annoying.

Subject: blown engine

Question:
my engine decided to dump its oil overheat and now i have no compression in 2&3 cylinders hopefully only headgasket not cracked head but only did gasket few months ago! im fed up with it breaking down and thought it mite be worth while to fit a modern engine rather than repair mine! but is there an engine that can offer 200bhp is cheap and easy to swap over? i have a van so the car is not my daily drive but i dont want to spend to much on the conversion! Could you suggest any engines that you know people have put in before?

Answer:
the cheapest and easiest is the volvo 480 turbo conversion, which has been proven several times to be a good move. however, i'd find out why your current engine dumpd its oil out. - id bet it was a dodgy oil filter lip seal that blow out. - simply fixed by using the removal tool to tighten the new one on. - id also say your pistons are knackered- maybe liners too.
the problem with most modern engines is the fact you will have to buy an aftermarket ecu to run them. - depends on how much u think cheap actually is...

hi wiz. Ive been working on a 5 gtt and it wont idle for love nor money! Ive set up the carb 2.5 turns on mixture screw, cleaned out the idle jet, tried another carb, blocked off rhe dump valve pipe and boost gauge pipe to elomante them. Got it to idle about 1200 but rough as hell, hunting like mad then almost stalls. Theres no other pipes i can see that are missing. Any suggestions wise one??

Answer:
what cam have you got? - have you done a compression check on the engine yet?

Subject: db gauge

Question:
it idel and on full throttle with full boost. Do you know what its ment to be? Thanks

Answer:
depends from car to car. cars with sporty cams tend to need richer idle. - ideally you need 14.5:1 or leaner! but some cars need 13.5 or so to idle.
on full boost it should be about 12.5:1 for a turbo car.

Subject: sourcing a vnt

Question:
hi wizard! i would like to know where i could source a vnt turbo from, and would it be easy to adapt it to fit my 5? thanks :)

Answer:
its pretty hard to adapt or so i heard. you would definately need a different down pipe for starters, as well as an external wastegate to get the best from it. have you contacted Adam L to see if the comapny he works for still does them for the gtt?

Subject: 200BHP??

Question:
Ive been mulching about at some bits wiz to get around 200bhp. Youve obviously explained many times about the fuelling setup so I wont ask about that. What I want to know is what sort of boost at manifold is needed and would I have to use a T28 unit or would a T25 suffice without it overspinning? Ive got the FMIC and such, just wanted a bit of reliability and not changing turbos every 6 months! Thanks

Answer:
make sure its a full t25 or a t28. run 21-22psi. a cam helps - usually a 285 piper variety.

usually the carb manages to fuel for 14psi ok with the standard t2. have you read any of the articles section?

Subject: 200BHP??? 2

Question:
what turbo is a full T25? do you mean not a hybrid? would a T28 from an S13 200SX do? I know it would have to be modified but would it fit in a T2 exhaust housing or will I have to change the turbine wheel first?

Thanks

Answer:
a full t25 is one with a t25 front end a t25 back end. not a t25 front end with a t2 back end.
you would need a 360 thrust washer fitted, so cheap ways of trying to get a turbo to fit will not be worth your while in the long run, as they have a 270deg bearing fitted as standard.
better off saving the pennies for a full hybrid with a t25 back end, and seeing a respectable turbo company such as Turbo Developments and saying you are with the RTOC.

Question:
hi wizard i just got another head for my phase 2 gt turbo but it look slightly different it does not have as many studs on the back for the exhaust manifold but apart from that it is the same does this mean i have a phase 1 head??

Answer:
no, it means you've been sold a dud.
the ph1 head is exactly the same as the ph2 head except for a few differences around where the valve guides poke through the top of the head.
you have an early normally aspirated head there.

Question:
hi iv got a bleed valve under the bonit and an in car boost if i wind the one under the bonit out will the one in the car be less sensitive cause the valve in the car i used to unwind it round twice for 20psi but now it only needs once to be un wound once for 20 psi. so what im saying is i want it less sensitive in the car as it was be for some one messed about with it as its more safe less chance of unwinding it to much

it depends how its all plumbed in. i cannot say without seeing it.

Subject: idle problem

Question:
hi wiz
my engines rebuilt and running only another 600 miles to run in!!!! the only problem is idle i have fitted a 285 cam and upgraded valve springs!!! some times it will sit ticking over at 850 rpm and then next min it reving up on its own.
i have checked pipework/fmic/compression test any ideas???
thanks

Answer:
sounds like the carb return spring isnt strong enough and you've got a sticky flap ;)
shorten the spring and see if it sorts the problem out. - if it doesnt then richen the mixture alittle by unscrewing the mixture screw slightly. - i'd also adjust the idle speed alittle to closer to 900-1000rpm.

Subject: Running in

Question:
Hey wiz,
Iam currently running in my new engine and keeping it below 2000 revs?, do I need to keep it under a certain speed??
Gonna do a 1000 miles on new engine before winding up the boost, is that enough do you think???
Cheers again wiz

Answer:
no need to keep it under a certain speed. as long as the revs are kept down.
1000 miles is plenty. - just keep an eye on the oil pressure when the car is hot.

Question:

Answer:
yeah thanks for bothering to write a question.

at a guess i'd say the answer to your imaginary question is that any sump will fit the gt turbo block as they are all of the same design. - although you will have to fit a slightly deeper or shallower oil pump base depending on which sump you fit...

Subject: turbo aftercooling

Question:
hi wiz, whats better. an air - air intercooler front mounted or an air - water charge cooler? Ive been told the latter is only goof for short bursts as it gets heat soaked after a while. Is this true? Im asking because Ive got an alloy intercooler from a vauxhall frontera and its endcaps hit the subframe each side so dont think I can fit it so need an alternative. Thanks

PS. as with my previous posts you've probably guessed that Im a cheapskate!! LOL

Answer:
a charge cooler works well, but you need enough rads to cool the water to the cooler. they are also expensive. just get a scrap yard intercooler that fits.

Question:
hi wiz, wonder if you can help me. i was going down the motorway the other day when all of a suden major missfire and loads of white smoke from turbo and zust. changed the turbo and its still smokeing and missing.so im thinking head gaskit or liners , if i do need new liners how do i measure the crank to see what sheels to put in? at this pont i must tell u i have two spare engines ,could i just use a vernia gauge. cheers mate

Answer:
do a compression check before you split the engine. this will tell you which cylinder has gone.
you do not need new shells when you fit a liner - just use the ones on there at the moment.
