Subject: Fuel Pressure

Question:
Which pipe to carb? Main fuel feed from p/reg? or one from top of lobster that goes down to the top of p/reg? or is that pipe just boost pressure at carb top????

Answer:
if you wanna read fuel pressure, then you have to measure the pressure of the petrol. - not the boost reference to the p/r.

it is the main fuel feed to the carb from the p/r that you need.

Subject: timing all over the place

Question:
good evening wiz,

im having a few problems trying to get my car to settle on idle. the timing seems to be all over the place as no matter what i do the revs will raise and lower betwwen 1600 and 1100.

to help the problem is it possible to grind the locating lug off the side of the distributer so i can twist it round to help with the timing?

the car has a 285 cam in it, carb is standard.

can you suggest anything, cheers.

Answer:
it is not your timing thats the problem. the dizzy on these cars has nothing to do with timing, just purely for spark transfer.
it will be your carb.
firstly clean out the idle jet (it should say 45 on the side of it- NOT 44!!!) - the big brass screw on the drivers side of the carb. - make sure you look at the very end of it, and make sure it is clear of debris.
then make sure you have a seal on the idle jet - or use PTFE tape on the thread. - also make sure you have an Oring on the mixture screw. wind the mixture screw out nearly all the way - anticlockwise, then turn it in slowly, the idle should slowly start to come down steadily? you may have to lower the idle speed as well, via the idle speed screw.

Subject: 2nd gear synchromesh worn out.

Question:
2nd gear synchromesh has worn out, selecting 2nd gear results in an embarrassing crunch, I would like to fit a good quality reconditioned unit. What companies would you recommend? (might ask them to fit it aswell).
Regards matt.

Answer:
just look in the local yellow pages for a gearbox place. or better yet ask some of the more serious local boy racers, where they get theirs done.- it usually worthwhile, cos alot of these places get a reputation via word of mouth.

Subject: My gearbox is playing up

Question:
I thought I'd killed the clutch on my R5 so I changed that but the problem is still there.

I can get reverse just fine but when I engage any of the 5 forward gears I get no drive at all.

The gears seem to engage ok and the linkage is properly adjusted, while I had the box out doing the clutch you could turn the input shaft by hand with it in gear and both outputs would ok in all gears.

Is there something silly I'm missing or do I need to be looking at a new gearbox?

Answer:
first of all, i would jack one side of the car up. - leave one wheel off the ground. - make sure its one wheel - not both!!!
then manually move the gear selector on the bottom of the gearbox. you can work out in your head how the gear lever would move the selector up and down and backwards and forwards.
if you still cant get a gear i'd say that the box is fubar'd. - even if you get the centre plate round the wrong way you can still drive the car....

Subject: lumpy at idle

Question:
my car has been sat around for months and i have just got it through its mot but the engine is very lumpy at idle! could this be due to the plugs and that it hasnt been driven in ages? I took it for a long drive but it is still the same! I have cleaned out the idle jet the 1st and 2nd stages are standard 130 main grp a carb! the carb is dechoked and a nightmare when cold as expected but when warm the car hesitates slightly like it wants to stall! I will be changing the plugs as a matter of course but do you think this sounds more like fuel mix? many thanks!

Answer:
make sure the leads anf the dizzy are corrosion free. - if its been laid up, then this can cause problems. - change the plugs, clean the dizzy, but also fill the tank up with fresh fuel. - old fuel can cause all sorts of problems.
once you've done that, let me know the outcome.

Question:
I need to get a new set of spark plugs but don't know what to get? At the moment I am using NGK plugs for standard Renault 5 set-up! I am looking to run 22psi boost which I have spoken to you about before but don't know if I need to use a cooler plug to avoid det? Most people swear by NGK but I was wondering what these pulse plugs or whatever they are, are any good?!

Answer:
just stick with NGK B8EVX's.
i think there is an article on the plugs in the articles section?

Subject: Engine stalling

Question:
Hello Wiz,
I have a problem with my car when below 2000 revs in all gears! When i first pull away it goes to cut out even when i give it more gas but as soon as it gets to 2 grand it picks up a bit although very lumpy and I can pull away, then it does the same thing through all the gears. The car is not on choke and has been warmed up after starting, its got a brand new carb and has just had a rebuild everything is new or newish apart from AEI unit. What do think wiz??

Answer:
"its got a brand new carb and has just had a rebuild everything "
a brand new carb? - and how much did that cost? - are you sure you dont mean a refurbished one?
sounds like you have some debris in the idle jet or idle circuit. - you need a can of carb cleaner. - clean out the idle jet - the big brass screw on the drivers side of the carb. then try putting the straw attachment of the cleaner in the hole left by the brass screw and give it a good 20sec squirt to clean it out.

then re-assemble - making sure you have a rubber seal on there.- or at least some Ptfe tape on the thread.

Subject: what jets?

Question:
hi wiz ive got my last hurdle before the 5 goes back on the road. ive got a t2/t25 tt stage 2 turbo, big bore elbow and down pipe onto scorpion system, alloy rad, mocal oil cooler, uprated leads and plugs, full set of samco, gt tunning spider valve and in car boost, armtech rev limiter, wideband afr gauge. what jets and anything else do i need so i can run 10-18 psi? and how much bhp are we looking at?

Answer:
glad you have a wideband...

get the 2nd stage enricher to about a 120, then take the air corrector to a 1mm and see what happens as you turn the boost up with the AFR. you might have to increase the main jet to 130?
18psi on a standard cam will be about 170bhp

for cars that need alot of work you could be looking at £2000.

Question:
hello umm just really sighned up and bought a r5gt can u recomed a place that would rebulid my engine and gear box how much do you recon it will cost thanks

Answer:
a gearbox rebuild will cost about £300 or so. depends what is broken inside yours. you would have to look for local gearbox specialists really. - either that or fit a 2nd hand box.
engine wise - alot of people on here build it themselves. with parts you are looking at about £500. you can be looking at over £1000 for a tuner built engine.

Subject: Engine stalling

Question:
Hey Wiz thanks for the info, cleaned out the idle jet now its running like a dream!
Yeah it was a new carb from webcon think i paid around 220quid, don't think it was a refurb?
Would the debris in the carb be coming from the fuel tank or fuel lines? Is it worth trying to clean the fuel system or flushing out the tank??
Cheers again Wiz

Answer:
no, dont bother stressing about debris in the tank. you have a fuel filter under the car and a filter in the carb top itself. it'll have been a tiny bit of crud from when the carb was built!

Question:
my dash board is getting abit dated is there anyway i can clean it up ie painting it,or will a renault clio dash fit the renault 5 turbo car and if this can be done is it a difficult task

Answer:
have you tried cleaning it with silicone spray yet? - its makes it look alot fresher.
failing that you can used plastic primer and paint the less textured areas whatever colour you like.
you can fit the clio dash, but you do have to make up brackets for the dash to mount up to. - so yes that would be quite fiddly.

or ask some of the local boyracers, who in their opinion does a good spray job. reputation in this field is usually earned over long periods of time - and a good job, is never cheap.

Subject: tdc wires

Question:
i read the article on swapping round the tdc wires and ***ing the ignition by 4.4 degrees! in the article it says it was used on the cup cars running 1 bar boost and not to do it when running 2bar boost! What are your views on me doing this and running 1.5bar boost and using higher ron rated fuels?

Answer:
don't be a numpty.

make an adjustable tdc sensor and start retarding the ignition.
advancing it at that sort of boost level will cause problems.

Subject: oil

Question:
reading the what oil article i tried to look at the mobil vs motul but i couldnt read it wouldnt let me! was just wondering what it said also i am using motul oil at the moment and need an oil change and am wondering what oil is best to use??

Answer:
no idea what it said to be honest, as its one of the most boring topics after cup mods and dump valves.
whatever is say, some smart alec will tell you the opposite and how they have been running on said oil for 30years.
i personally use fully synthetic (to cope with the high oil temps the gtt suffer with) and usually a 15w50 or a 10w60 as the engine is a fairly old design.

as the engine rotates 'forwards' you would need to move the sensor towards the front of the car to retard the timing.

Subject: fuel injection

Question:
hi wiz. Im just wondering if you of anyone out there that does a fuel injection system for the 5. I want to move away from the carb and try something different with the original engine. Is it something i will have to design and build myself or is there bits from other renaults that bolt on? Im pretty good with electrics and will be making my own loom and using a standalone system. Do you reckon i would get enough gains for it to be worthwhile? Thanks wiz!

Answer:
no one really does off the shelf bits to convert the gt turbo to efi. renault did a manifold on an american model, but its very very difficult to get hold of. - very difficult!!!!!!!! Micheal Tierney from ireland on this site has made various manifolds over the years, his latest effort is like an extender plate that incorporates the injectors. other than that you'd have to make your own. the gains would be good, but it would be expensive to complete and do a good job.

Question:
Hi

Can I get away with fitting 15x7 alloys, some suppliers have tried to sell me 15x6.5 wheels, but I have seen a set a set of 15x7 wheels that I like, they are sold with an ET 35 will they fit? Or shall I keep on looking for a 15x6.5 wheel that I like? My car has standard suspension at the moment, but I might lower it later on is this more troublesome with 15x7 wheels?

Answer:
i think 15 x 7 may cause a few problems. best stick with what the suppliers are tryin to sell you?

Subject: carb

Question:
hiz wiz, if I decide not to go down the injection route, could I just put in a 130 main jet and swap the air corrector jet with the other jet then machine out my venturi? what sort of boost would that handle do you reckon? Im also adding a FMIC, relocated air filter, external oil cooler and possibly a clio rad to aid cooling

Answer:
do not mess with the venturi of the carb. it makes it hard to adjust the fuelling, as the pressure drop across the carb lessens and messing with the AC will not make it run too well up the revs and boost range.
firstly, what boost/power do you wanna run, and are you gonna buy an AFR meter? - remember much over 15psi on the standard turbo will seriously shorten its life.

Subject: carb2

Question:
im looking around 200bhp or just over. Im going either t25 or t28 turbo and mods mentioned in last question. I was going to have a grp a carb but wasnt sure if it was worth buying if that was the only mods carried out on it eg 28mm venturi and altered jets

Answer:
just stick with the standard venturi, make sure you run a 285 cam and run 20psi. you will need to run an AFR meter, to make sure you are not running lean.

Subject: carb3

Question:
would i need to have any jets changed at 20 psi? Im assuming the main jet and ac? What would you recommend? And yes i will be fitting an afr with wideband to keep an eye on fuelling. The engine is already stripped so is grpa headgasket or tls recommended to fit? Thanks again wiz!

Answer:
yes the uprated gasket is a must.

you might be able to get away with a 2nd stage enricher and ac change. have you looked at the carb articles yet?
