Subject: engine rebuild

Question:
alrite mate i started rebuilding my motor a couple of weeks ago due to 2 cracked pistons, i have got all new pistons, rings, liners, gaskets, bigends, main ends etc, But when going to refit the pistons i have forgot which way they go round, on the con rod and bearing caps do the little 'dented' bits on the bigend bearings go together and which way do my pistons go in because i have no arrows on them??
hope you can help thanks

Answer:
put the cutouts together, and make sure the cut outs are at the back of the block.

Subject: actuator outlets

Question:
Hi Wiz i have asked this on the boards but no reply maybe coz im being a mong ,
I have a forge actuator and it has two outlets only one of wich has a pipe on, the other is just open. As far as i can remenber its allways been like this ,
is it ok left open or should i blank it off, and whats it for ?

Thank you

Answer:
in the middle of the actuator there is a diaphram and a spring. - the port provide boost or atmospheric pressure to the diaphram so it can work correctly.
you basically need boost to the port furthest away from the actuator rod. the other one- leave open to air.

Subject: T3/T25 turbo

Question:
Hi wizard,do you know what a T3/T25 hybrid turbo is capable of power wise?

Answer:
depends on the size of the housings, AR number etc etc.
however, i can pretty much guarantee it will be able to supply more air than your engine will need with a carb. -what sort of figures were you hoping for?

Subject: speedo cables

Question:
hi wizzard

do you know which of the 3 lines in the speedo cable is the signal one to the clocks
is this correct
earth
live= red
signal= white

thanks

barry

Answer:
Now then, it's not that simple I'm afraid.

The GTT speedo uses a sensor called a variable-reluctor, VR for short. It doesn't have a supply voltage, instead it is an inductor that produces an AC signal to drive the speedo, much like the TDC crank sensor.

Red and white are the AC output from the sensor, the screen is just a screen, connected to ground.

You cannot connect the GTT's sensor to any of the normal "speed" inputs found most boost controllers, gear judge systems or launch control systems, etc.

Subject: oil breather

Question:
Hi Wizzz
I asked you a question a while ago about oil in my boost pipes and you sugested i fit a breather , well its time to get it done , so is it just a case of blocking the hole in the telephone hose and putting a small filter on the hose ? or should i just remove the pipe and the
t-peice on top of the manifold...
thanks -- Dan

Answer:
yes, block the hole in the telephone hose. and put a breather on the pipe. - make sure it dont hang over the clutch though - as when it drips oil it will contaminate your clutch.

Question:
hi after lettin my foot off acclerater the car pops and spits from exhaust checked exhaust no holes just had turbo re built as it was badly scored not sure if this would have anything to do with this but what else can i check also has group a carb cheers

Answer:
check that the mixture screw isnt in too far and is causing it to lean out on idle/ on over run. also check that the vacuum advance of the AEI is ok - suck it and see if it holds a vacuum. - make sure you Dump Valve isnt leaking on the vacuum feed either. - suck the nipple on the dump valve and see if is hold a vacuum.
also check to see that the inlet and exhaust manifold nuts are still on.

Subject: speedo target

Question:
Good afternoon wizard, could you help me? i have fitted astra mkII digi dash and have everything working but the speedo. i have a digi speed sensor all wired in ready to gon but im trying to find out how many 'tags' are on the speedometer target in the gearbox?

and can you by any chance tell me the outer diameter of the speedometer target.

many thanks.

Answer:
Unsure I'm afraid. I did once count the tags because I had to make a replica trigger wheel when I used a non-renault gearbox on a particular car. I think it was 12, or so. Anyway, count them: look into the hole, dab some tipex onto the tag you can see, turn the gearbox over as you count the tags until you come back to the tipex marked one again.

I don't know the diamater of the ring but it won't matter, it will make no difference to the results the sensor see's, the only important factor is the number of tags. (Unless you are using a reluctor sensor, in which case the amplitude of the signal will be greater with a greater diamater trigger wheel).

Subject: Big Bang!!!

Question:
hi when i was driving the r5 today i noticed the oil pressure gauge wasn't working but im finkin it might b the sensor. anyways its was boosting fine but when i turned up the boost while driving there was a loud bang from the engine. when i checked the only thing i could see was the breather filter was blown off the breather pipe coming from the oil separator. but im not sure if there is any more damage but it was 1 loud bang. what could be the problem as the car was boosting fine even when turned up before i changed the hoses???? :(

Answer:
you hit the overboost sensor cut off point. - it cuts the ignition when you hit about 15psi.
if you are running a standard carb- turn the boost down!
if you arent running a std carb then pull off the wires to the overboost sensor.

Hi there I recently had a set of avo coilovers fitted and have noticed like a rubbing noise coming from the passenger side, I removed the wheel and noticed that when you turn the brake *** back and forth the spring seems to turn making a noise as the disk is moved eg from full lock right to full lock left

Answer:
sounds like you need to look at tyhe bearing ontop of the shocks. or look at the bottom ball joint.

Subject: one way return valve

Question:
hello wizard im running a standard engine standard T2 with a T3 K tec actuator in car boost controller and a 130 main jet. if i were to blank of the one way return valve on the back of the manifold that goes to the breather would it give me more performance if not do i need to tweek the mixture screw to ritchen it up a bit if so how much. if i ritchen it up a bit would i get a flame out of back box when over boost kicks in when turning up to 15psi.

Answer:
blanking the one way valve will not improve performance as it shuts off when you are on boost.
if the car is running ok, leave the mixture screw alone.
if you managed to create a leak in the exhaust it would flame - but it would sound crap. if you want flames then you need either efi or a flamer kit. the carb fed engine will not cause massive exhaust flames when you hit the limiter - its not a cossie.

Question:
hi wizard have no fuel at carb is there a relay or fuse somewhere thanks addie

Answer:
look in the fuse box - off to the right - you will find the relays there. look for a big black and grey unit. 6 pin jobbie.

you also need to see if the car is sparking too. no sparks = no fuel = knackered tdc sensor.

Question:
Wiz,
So the car has started to gurgle and pop from the exhaust a significant amount more after after turning up the boost (sorry no idea what it is running)- the car is performing much better but i want to see if this could be a side effect of it under/ over fueling fueling? it is running a bigger main jet and altered air corrector... any suggestions why this maybe doing it?

Chris

Answer:
check your dump valve diaphram, vac pipework, or aei vacuum advance module isnt fecked.

Subject: red temp light. stalling/cutting out

Question:
hiya wiz my 5 has been off the road for 5 months because it was playing up abit due to the carb and then i realised i didnt want to drive it everyday an gt a runabout an then couldnt really afford to get it back on the road. any way taxed it yesterday went for a spin an due to the revs hesitation it made it harder pulling off cos the revs would die an nearly make it to stall. if i was off the accelerator just cruzing when i put my foot down it would jump because it had basicly cut out. i had noticed the temperature red light had come on. to day whent out all was abit better but then on the duel put my foot down abit an then after that i just new it went rough again an is now doing the same as yesterday.

i need to change my accelerator cable could this have anything to do with the revs hesitation dont really want to cut my throttle return spring just yet. going back to you asking what boost do i want to run, its running 9psi and i was just thinkin 13psi or should i just go straight to 15. if u could tell me how much i would need advance or *** it that would be great aswell cheers wiz

Answer:
you need to do a carb rebuild.- clean the carb out.
make sure you have water in the car and that the two wres that goto the temp sensor on the back of the waterpump are connected correctly- one of them operates the red warning light.
the stalling/dying will be carb related.
get it running right at 9psi first.

Subject: gurggling. revs. carb

Question:
sorry wiz forgot to say i did do a carb rebuild when it was off the road aswell i changed my return spring, mixture screw and i cleaned the carb out best i could. it was ok after that. the reason i asked about an air leak due to the revs hesitation is because like i said it was ok after carb rebuild an the revs started playing up after i changed my dumpvalve i have put my other one back on an still the same.

also something very worrying is it got very hot yesterday up the 3rd line on temp gauge when i turned my engine off i heard a gurggling noise coming from my rocker cover. am i in trouble. thanks

Answer:
check the oil level,
bleed the water via the bleed nipples.
do a compression check to see if you blown a gasket.
run the car and start sparying carb cleaner around the engine bay. - if there is a leak the engine will pick up.
i still think you have got bits in the your carb though.
take the idle jet out and spray it clean.

hello wizard when thrashing through gears sometimes it sticks in 2nd and its very hard to get out. its only done it since i turned up the boost to 15psi. would this be a sighn of gear bow on way out or baqd syncronization.

try changing the gearbox oil first. might help things.
