Subject: just wont start

Question:
hi wiz, i have been looking through your answers to peoples questions to try and get some help without bothering yourself but i still have a problem with getting my car to start? i have replaced starter, battery, and alternater and i have checked the power to starter and getting 12.2v also checked the ignition wire (creamy white) and getting 12v aswell i have checked the starter just incase it was faulty but it seems to work fine? but it wont turn over when its fitted in the car? i have tried 3 different starters and its the same end result? the car will start when bump start but its not an ideal way to get around??? is there anything you could suggest that i have missed?

Answer:
do you have an earth strap that connects from the firewall to the block? - next to the waterpump? - the starter motor needs to be earthed properly to work.

Question:
i have check the carb and it is all fine i done a compression test which showed no compression so i checked the valve timing / gaps which were out so i adjusted them according to the hains manual and i got good compression an 2 cylinders but the other were very low. i tryed spraying some easy start in the carb and it just turned over and shot the easy start back up through the carb which shows that the inlets are still open during compression, i took out all the inlet push rods and turned it over and i had no blow back but as soon as i put 1 in it blew back again so inother words what is the best way to time the car us so my inlets are closed during compression??
sorry about the essay

Answer:
ok, am i correct in saying you have never had this engine running?

you need the flywheel notch to be pointing at the 0deg mark on the gearbox observation hole.

you need pistons 1 and 4 to be at the top of their stroke.

you need the rotor arm to be pointing straight ahead at the radiator.

you need the + sign and the - sign on the cam sprocket and the crank pulley to face each other.

i personally think someone has built this engine and put the cam in 180deg out.

Subject: shagged gearbox

Question:
Hi, my gearbox is shagged, I think. Gear changes are fine. After some time driving, say 20 minutes or so, it starts to whine. There's no vibration or anything. It has oil. So I'm thinking bearing(s) gone, only misbehaves when hot. So, I'm thinking, change gearbox. But where to find refurb or known good 2nd hand one? Not many on rtoc classifieds. Looking through old posts, I see question (ID 6308) where Wizard states other gearboxes fit.

Do you really mean that? And are they a straight fit, same ratios etc? or is welding and/or shoe-horning reqd?

The car is a standard R5 GTT Turbo Raider, bog standard in every respect.

Answer:
my first question, is what oil are you running in the gearbox?- also how much are you running?
i dont know of any refurbed boxes for sale, but i do know places that will refurb one for you.
try Master gearboxes (BOB) 07932775482 - he is over wolves area.
if you can find a volvo 480 turbo gearbox, then that fits. but most importantly it has the electronic speedo. normal 5 boxes run with a mechanical cable.

Answer:
could have been a breather problem. as long as it doesnt do it again! lol

some other times i find my self having half choke on and pumping the throttle to start it

no smoke on, idle boost or other wise

im led to belive its been rejetted, maybe thats the prob?

Answer:
try cleaning out the accelerator pump jet. its the little bent brass thing that squirts fuel down the venturi. or makin sure the accelerator pump itself is crud free.

Subject: flowing a intercooler, not usual qestion

Question:
hello
ive flowed my intercooler, but was told to just sticka screw thought the side or bolt in the themostat bit, but relised the tabs could be lifted and strapped back and tabs re bent down.

now ive done this and no boost leaks so im happy.

tho the qestion is, does it improve the cars bhp. or more better so the throttle response. also i pursume it makes for better cooling, i just wondered how cooler does this mod run?

Answer:
the throey is that you have less restriction in the boost run if you jam the flap up and remove the thermostat entirely. not sure on the bhp increase, as i dont think anyone has actually bothered to do a before and after with a thermometer...

Subject: sensors

Question:
i had to remove the front wiring loom as it shorted out on the horn wire agasint the i/c

now i removed it all carfully rembering were it all went got the new loom, but no connection to the perc fan and front sensors!(every thing else works)
do you think i got a n/a 5 loom but it does have the fog wires too. (got it from a trusted seller over on r5gtt.co.uk)
is there any way of wiring these sensors up to the loom or maybe back to the plugs in the foot wells. plug colour and pin number is cool. or is there a wiring diagrame on the front loom to the sensors and percfan

Answer:
the engine wiring loom contains the perc fan and front sensors.

the front wiring loom contains the fogs - ITS A DIFFERENT LOOM! - it goes through the o/s chassis leg.

the horn is not part of the engine loom!

Subject: sensors p2

Question:
right ok found the water sensor was a lil grubby and now works, i know the horn is on the front loom but im 99% sure the sensors was conneted to the o/s loom. so the wires for the sensors, do they connect to the engine loom that runs round the side to the gearbox sensor?

im lost with out knowing were the two sensors go, altho i now have water sensoe. and oil pressure, altho i have a yellow with grey (iirc) strip and a brown wire from the sensor.
i dont have the perc fan sensor/soliniod wiring is the wires for the front sensors there

is there a wiring diagrame for this part?

Answer:
the engine wiring loom is as follows.

main connector,
branch off for reverse light switch,
branch off for starter motor - main live and starter solenoid,
branch off for perc fan sensor over turbo/ under carb and green ceramic resistor and solenoid on bulkhead,
branch off for oil depth level sensor and oil pressure.
branch off for earth connection to block.
then you have all the alternator connections - inc the rad fan connections and fan relay, and perc fan.

i think there are pics in the articles section?

Hi Wiz,
The thermostat is obviously in the top hose for a reason, but what are the implications of not having one during the summer?

Answer:
the water will get too cool, this will make the oil in the oil cooler run too cool, which means its not gonna be in its proper temp range.

more importantly the heater will be cold and the missus will moan like hell.

was just woundering if i can fit the valeo uprated gt turbo clutch into a r5 campus prima gearbox? and is it a straight swop? its m reg 1995 if thats any help.

yes it will fit if you have a 200mm clutch. although if you have a 180mm clutch, i think that maybe the cover plate bolt drillings in the flywheel might be different. - in which case you will need a gtt flywheel.

Subject: Meandering pedal...

Question:
Hey wizard folk, a question, having replaced my brake system with new parts and cleaned up the servo I have a wandering pedal, basically if you touch the pedal it seems to 'suck down' and apply the brakes for you, a quick tap on the pedal will set this off then to get them to release you need to tap the pedal from behind and off they come, it's like it is sticking a bit ? Is this the one way valves or could my new vacuum pipe be collapsing? Or have I a knackered servo?

Answer:
you can test the servo by pumping the pedal with the car off. it will get hard....
then with your foot on the pedal, turn on the car. the pedal should drop slightly. if so - the servo is fine.

are you sure the return spring on the pedal isnt loose?
or you need to adjust the length of the gap between the pedal and the rod out of the cylinder.

Subject: rebuild problems, blow-back and lots of white smoke

Question:
my car was suffering with very bad blow back oil covering the engine from the breather and dip stick and when you drive it down the road you could not see out the back window from all the white smoke from the exhaust so i decidied that it was time for a rebuild. i took off the head to have a look at things and the liners look brand new no scoring or cracks but all the seals holding them on had gone so the liners moved when i turned it over (by hand) would this be causing my problems or do i need to replace my rings as well. is there any was of checking if my rings need replacing with out doing a compression test because my engine is now in my back garden? also i have checked my head for any signs so cracks but it looks fine should i get it pressure test tho any way just to be on the safe side?
cheers and sorry for the essay

Answer:
the liners pretty much always move when you turn the engin eover with no head on.- that is why you should use liner clamps....
you can check the piston rings by putting some thin oil on top of the piston and seeing how quickly it drains away. - but you should really have done a compression check before you took the engine out. you might as well change the rings, cos they dont sound too healthy.

id also get the head checked.

what state is your turbo in also?

Subject: bite point

Question:
i have recently got a renault 5 gt turbo and the clutch seems to be a bit odd. i no it has an uprated clutch (maby group n) but not a paddle clutch. i dont seem to have a bite point it just seems to be either on of off which is very hard to drive. you start bringing the clutch up and it gets to a point where it will spring up and you will stall it or pull away at high revs and spin? any ideas as i am in the middle of a rebuild so it would be good to get this sorted out aswell before the engine goes back in.
cheers

Answer:
that is what happens when the volvo 480 turbo clutch is fitted. its good for 230bhp...
you need to think how much power you are gonna run? and maybe put a standard one back in, or run the clutch arm extensions....as mentioned in the articles section.

Question:
Hi Wiz.
On tick over my 5 misses and when im on steady throttle it feels as though its reluctant to keep a smooth drive. i've changed the rotor arm, cap, plugs, leads, fuel filter, and carb rebuilt, including changed carb 3 times and still does it. but still this missing and dodgy cruzin happens??? totally stumped on this one. any ideas?

Answer:
take the carb top off and check you havent got fuel dripping down into the carb from the secondary venturi onto the throttle plate on idle. it should look dry!
either that or check your compression.
