Subject: temp gauge Question: Hi Wiz, Temp gauge for some reason is now only going up 1/6th on the display. Where as before it sat around the half way mark… any ideas to what would have caused this? I have bled the system, no air gaps- I have re done the wiring on the water temp sensor (but has it is showing something im guessing that isn’t the issue?) Not sure if it is related but…The battery light has just started staying on (guessing I need a new alternator?) Any suggestions to fix this problem? Answer: is your thermostat ok - not stuck open is it? |

Subject: smoke 2 Question: i wrote to you last week about my turbo smoking from underneath ive changed the turbo to engine oil pipe and still getting drops of oi on top of the gear box when the car has had a good thrashing the turbo smokes from underneath the casting side under the turbo were the bolt is i have an air vent on bonnet and you can see the smoke come out and smells that its burning oil to. could there be a hair line crack inside the turbo. it also smoke when letting foot of the pedal at 90mph loads of smoke at tail pipe then stops. Answer: im thinking one of two things is happening here. either the seal between the oil return port and the core is leaking (if you have a screw on port or a bolt on port it doesnt matter) or the turbo is shagged, and is leaking oil badly on boost. - test the centre shaft by performing the wobble test.- does the centre shaft move in and out, or up and down much? |

Subject: boosts controller lead Question: How/where do you add a boost lead to my renault 5 gtt and is it easy to do my self. does adding a boost lead add more boost to your car. cheers Answer: errrr, i havent a clue what you are on about mate. im assuming this unit you are talking about doesnt come with instructions? is it a bleed valve? is it a boost controller? or is it a shonky bit of pipe with a tiny hole in it? all need to be fitted to the pipe that feed the wastegate actuator pipe with boost. you could also try and shorten the actuator rod length - preferably without snapping it or fecking the diaghram up in the unit. :) |

Subject: can hardly get reverse 2? Question: hay me again! iv just bort the car and the guy i got it from said the gear box was refurbed in 2006?wud it wear that quick? the gear box mount is worn and ripped slightley and the bushes on the gear selecter r buggerd, cud this also b the reason 4 it jumping out of gears and not gettin reverse? cheers dude! Answer: yes. sort the mounts out first. are you really sure that the bushes are buggered? - if it flops about like a pornstars todger after the money shot, then its more than likely you are missing the spring that holds it in place.- it just goes between the selector rod and the floorpan- they always break. |

Subject: Lost Ignition Key - Renault 5 GTT Phs.2 Question: I have lost the ignition key to my R5! Would really like to get it goin again this season so any help would be appreciated. I don't have ignition I.D. number so seems impossible for Renault dealer to make me a copy. Just seeking most painless way to remove/replace it. Cheers. Answer: you need to drop the steering column down. then drill out the two retaining lugs that stop the barrel being withdrawn. also unscrew the small cross head screw that holds it in place. then pull the lock and the wiring out. or even use a 3mm drill down each side of the lock(were the key goes in) so you can turn it to the A position with a big screw driver |

Subject: carbon on piston crown Question: hi wiz i found my runing problem my rotor arm had shattered but at the moment doing my head gasket when i took the head off the piston crown were carboned up what the best to clean it ? my head looks quiet straight would u still skim it and prssure test it ? is there anyting else worth doing whilst im there ? thanx wiz Answer: spray wd40 onto the piston crown and use the rough green side of a washing up sponge or other type of scouring pad to get it off. first of all measure the thickness of the head - less than 72.5mm and you are asking for problems. you can check to see if the head is flat with a steel ruler, but if you havent got one just take it to get checked and pressure tested. |

Subject: blowing up! Question: hi ive just bought my 5 and was woundering wot the likely hood of it blowing up or head gasket goin on a track day which is on fri? its running around 200stallions and the engine was rebuilt 3yrs ago?cheers dude! Answer: if you havent managed to blow it up yet, then it should be ok. your brakes will die and your tyres will be shredded though. also keep the interior fan on, and if you have a rad fan switch, then i would recommend keeping it switched on! maybe also turn the boost down alittle.... 1 bar for track is all you need, if everthing is in order you can go round all day long http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdxBmSGUjiw |

Subject: exhaust smoking on boost Question: when i put my foot down and i'm boosting i get a hazy sort of smoke for the exhaust. its not blue or a big cloud of white smoke, any ideas please? Answer: its either gonna be excess fuel or oil from the turbo/breather system. check the turbo shaft for in and out play. - if it has, then it will be your turbo. have you had your car fuelling set up properly? - it could be overfuelling on boost. are you running a standard breather system set up or a catchtank/breather filter set up? - it could be pumping oily vapour back into the turbo inlet and causing smoke. |

Subject: bleed valve Question: I do not have any instrctions and idont know who made it. the car had a load of spares with it when i bought it and that was in with it. Answer: there are 3 ports on the bleed valve. the middle one is the leak off port. plumb the left hand port to the wastegate port closest to the front of the car. plumb the right hand port to the carb top port. use 3mm ID tubing for the left and right ports and 5mm ID tubig for theleak off port. turn the knob 1/8th of a turn to the left and see how much the boost goes up by. remember 14psi max on a standard carb. |

Subject: Turbo smoking badly under the bonnet . Question: I've got my r5 to the point of starting it up after a restoration project. when the engine warmed up I noticed that there is smoke coming from the turbo, I at first thought it was burning off old oily deposits. I've repeatedly started the engine and when it gets up to temperature it does the same everytime. I don't want to road test the car yet incase it goes up in flames. I wondered if you had an idea of what to check for. Many thanks. Answer: is it leaking from the oil feed or the oil return? |

Subject: idle mixture screw! Question: hiya wiz, i have recently rebuilt my carb but did not change the idle mixture screw when it was off the car. i have now got the carb on the car an the car is running but wont idle. is the mixture screw in the throttle assembly because sumone said it was in the 'big brass screw on the drivers side of the carb' but thats the idle jet init? well i have tried to get out what i think is the idle mixture screw but it wont come out. any help please Answer: if it wont idle, you need to remove the idle jet- the big brass screw, and clean the very tip of it out. to get the mixture screw out you need to take the carb off, turn it upside down and poke through the bottom hole with some weld wire. this will push it out! |

Subject: breather pipes Question: hiya wiz, i have looked thru other questions and was lookin at question 1711. its about a sucking noise after i fiited my new samco's. i have now put the restrictor in the new hose but it dosent seem to be running right. when i didnt have a restrictor in there, it wouldnt idle proply, but i took the brether pipe off the telephone/air filter hose and blocked it off and the revs rise an it wasnt cutting out. is this ok to do or do i put a little breather filter on the end of the brether pipe. or jus leave the restrictor in and change my idle mixture screw? i cant get my carb elbow off now either i think, i think i've threaded one of the 3 screw i shouldnt have cos it was ok going in but it wont loosin or tightin now. any help please Answer: make sure you have the 1.7mm restrictor in the pip leading to the manifold. also make sure the one way valve is working properly. you can adjust the idle mixture screw to get it run better without dying - you will have to richen it up abit as you are now leaking air into the manifold. however... you can block the pipe to the back of the manifold. remove the T piece and just put a breather ontop of the oil vapour seperator pot - or at least the pipe off the top of it.... |

Subject: bleed valve Question: hi just fitted a bleed valve to my r5 but now that i have done this my dump valve does not make that ptssssssss noise but it is still connected is this ment to happen or have i fitted the bleed valve wrong. cheers for any help. Answer: you have fitted the bleed valve wrong. the dump valve vacuum line should goto the manifold and the ignition unit only. the bleed valve should goto between the actuator and the carb top. |

Subject: wont start on starter Question: i have had my renault 5 gt turbo for a few months now i got it with a blown head gasket but a fully rebuilt engine. i replaced the head gasket and bolts etc but i cant start it with the starter. i have got a spark and fuel going to and from the carb. it was turning over slow so i replace the battery and put a new starter moter in, it will turn over but not fire. if i get a push down the road and bump start it starts straight away?? sorry about the essay but it is relly anoying my now. cheers Answer: take off the carb top. spray deodorant or carb cleaner down the carb. then start the car. - check to see if the acclerator jet is squirting fuel down the venturi - everytime you move the accelerator. im assuming once the car is running, it stays running? have you done a compression check to see if other damage was done besides just the headgasket? |

Subject: wont start on starter 2 Question: hello again, yes i have took off the carb top and sprayed loads of easy start down it and it still doe=sent start with the starter. if i look down the card and pump thje throttle fuel does go in. yes when i bump it stays running. why should i do a compression test then because it does run ( by bumping it) so it does have compression. cheers again Answer: what jets do you have in your carb? - it is standard? the reason i suggest a compression check, is if one of your valves is mullered or not sealing right, then you might not have great compression on one or more cylinders. it would also show if the cam timing is out (then again you didnt touch the cam did you?)- it would also show if you have got the tappets set correctly - too tight and it will not start right at all. have you done a carb rebuild? do you still have a choke flap, and do you pump the accelerator twice before you start the car? |

Subject: relocating headertank, removing anti perc system Question: how do I remove anti perc system on and fitting headertank in scuttle area(drivers side) Answer: unbolt the anti perc fan - the two 10mm bolts are under the wheel arch. they usually rust solid- maybe best to angle grind them off. pull off the wiring connector. then undo the fuel line from the carb and pull the whole unit up and let the fuel line thread its way through the plastic pipe. undo the wiring to the solenoid on the bulkhead and block the pipe that goes into the top boost pipe. tie the wiring out the way. reattach the fuel line to the carb, tie it well away from the exhaust manifold!!! you need to remove and mount the expansion bottle mounting bracket in the scuttle area. then rotate the heater matrix pipes round. - im sure one goes through the hole that renault put in the bottom of the scuttle tray. the other pipe might need a hole cutter through the bulkhead to sort. cutting and rejoining the pipes might be needed too. |
