Subject: boost gauge readings Question: hello wizard i have changed all my vac lines still made no difference to my boost readings have even changed it to the cup mod buy found what ever i did the gauge only read half a bar could it be the actuator at fault ? have also checked for boost leaks but havent found any Answer: i thought your car was reading high in the cold weather? have you tried shortening the actuator rod? - or even using wire to keep the wastegate shut, and gently taking it for a run, and seeing what the boost buildsup to? if it stays low - then you have a major leak are you running a bleed valve? - what pipe run are you running? |

Subject: cleaining the carb. jets! Question: sorry me again. I would like to know what size carb main jet I would need? i am runnin 0.9 psi at the mo but i am geting a in car boost so on the second setting its gna be a bit more.i was gna ask u if u could tell me what would be the best 2 settings for me to run if i tell u my mods? but i am going to take my car on a rolling road 2 set my carb up right after i have serviced it, cos its a grp a carb, will they tell me there? but i need to know the size of the jets wen i service it! Answer: is it definately a group A carb? - you need to find out the venturi diameter.... standard is 25mm, but people bore it out to 26/27/28mm... you need to see what jets you are currently running, as setting up a grp a carb is notoriously tricky... |

Subject: Left-Over Gasket Question: I'm changing the manifold gasket on my car and have everything off, nice and clean ready to put back together, but, the old gasket has left loads of the compound type material on the face of the head. I've sc***d the majority of it off but how can I get the rest off, or will the new gasket seal it? Sorry for the essay. Answer: try a wire wheel in a drill, but keep the WD40 sprayed on the area to be cleaned |

Subject: Fuel gauge not working. Question: i have fitted digital clocks but the fuel gauge is not working. i shorted the first terminal out on the fuel sender unit and the gauge started to go up. so its not the clocks. i then removed the sender itself and the part that sits in the tank was all coved in a rust like substance. i cleaned it all up and put it back in to no avail. i didnt clean the slider unit in the pump as i was unsure how it came apart. could you advise as to what the problem may be. Answer: the tank unit works on a variable resistance and the dash unit reads that . perhaps the two are out |

Subject: boost gauge reading Question: right im running standard pipework with just a dump valve i havent adjusted the actuator arm at all and it so weird it only over boosts in cold weather in hot weather it runs a bar of boost fine and in cold weather goes up by half a bar Answer: if you have the std carb top elbow (the black one) have a look for a little bit of pipe in the one of the outlets on the N/S see if its loose or missing |

Subject: slamming doors! Question: wiz, i have to slam my doors to close them, sumtimes really hard. the hinges an that look ok. any ideas? thanks. an ye i think it a grp a carb. i didnt fit it. it was on the car wen i got it, i have a receipt. i hope so, i havnt really looked at it yet tho. Answer: open the door about 1 foot, then pull the door upwards and see if it rocks at the hinge. if its solid, then get a torx bit and move the door striker on the B pillar/door shut area around. - its got a captive nut behind it, so dont worry about it not tightening up again. make sure the door isnt catching on the plastic strip over the top of the side skirt too. |

Subject: astra digi dash Question: Hi, I have been able to fit an astra digi dash and figured out what wire do what for all the sensors but the speedo. the vauxhall speed sensor had 3 wires (a permenant live, an earth and a signal back to the clocks.) Now the renault speed sensor has 3 wires (red, white and a bare wire. Could you by any chance tell me what these 3 wires do? so i can just chop and re-connect. thanks. Answer: Alas, it wont work with the renault sensor! Unlike the GM stuff Renault use a VR (variable reluctor) sensor rarther like the TDC sensor to run the speedo. The red and white wires are from the VR, the bare wire is just a screen that goes to ground. Even if the Renault sensor was hall/optical like other cars (IE a pulse) then the likelyhood of it having the right number of pulses per diff revolution would be unlikely. (IE the calibration would probably be wrong) It would be easier to try and learn how many pulses per diff revolution the Vauxhall makes then replicate that with a toothed ring (like an ABS ring) mounted onto the inner of your o/s driveshaft, with a hall sensor mounted above it. Subject: wheel sizes Question: hi wiz, uum, looking to buy sum new wheels 4 my 5,they do to sizes 4 the wheel i want which is 15in,,,6.5x15,or 7x15,and runing 45 tyres. which would be best and safest to fit,the car is lowered 35mm as well.thanks man. Answer: what sort of offset are they? the 6.5 inch are the safer option, but the 7 inch will make the tyre sit better on the rim, and make the car handle better. |

Subject: Cracking liners all the time Question: Hi my car keeps on cracking liners this is the 4th one I’ve changed (never been the same one twice) n its starting to do my head in, I can't go above 4000rpm without cracking one, I only have the boost wound up to only about 10psi, I only have 1 bleed valve on the top water hose but it seems to bleed up fine so I don’t think it has any air locks and the temp is always fine id changed the water pump and sensor before just to be sure, I have good oil pressure, the cars getting plenty of fuel cos I’ve got loads of black smoke out the back. I did notice the tops of the pistons were white at the back if that helps, the head gasket has never gone, PLEASE HELP! Engine specs Standard engine as far as I know K-Tec 180 turbo Group a carb Big intercooler Unrated Head Gasket Set and Bolts Answer: get a vernier and measure the head depth. if its less than 72.4mm then you have got problems. also suck the aei vacuum line that goes to the black UFO shaped thing that is on ignition unit. it should hold a vacuum - if it doesnt the vacuum capsule if buggered, and the car will be pinking badly. might also be worth putting a standard carb back on and seeing what the afr's are on boost. |

Subject: Rocker is dry - no oil Question: Hey Wiz, After a recent headgasket change I turning it over & I relaised oil was not reaching the top of the engine. To check I had pressure I removed the turbo oil feed and cranked over. that was fine, so there was pressure. I then Checked the hole in the rocker shaft. This was slightly out for I fine tuned but still as no oil. What could be wrong as you can put the headgasket on wrong or wonky!?! Cheers for any advice Mike Answer: yes, you can put it on upside down...this will block the oilway. you can also put it on wonky as it hinges on the front dowel when you put the head on...thus covering the oilway again! time to take it apart! |

Subject: rs turbo,s Question: hey wizard,i have a freind that thinks his fiesta turbo is fast, but we went to the pod a while ago and he done 3 runs,15.7,,,15.6,,15.5 quatres at 90mph terminal,he got 194bhp print out, what magic do the gt turbo have to make them run at 13 sec runs al day long at the same power as his fiesta, even 300bhp+ rs turbo get crap times,weird..... Answer: Thats because most of them don't have 300hp or anywhere near it. B/S is rife in the Ford world, more than the Renault world even. Look at his 1/4 mile terminal speed, if he's doing any less than 95mph then your friend doesn't have 190hp. You can't argue with power to weight ;-) For your R5 you need good grippy tyres and 180hp or so to get comfortably into the 13's. A full T25, a good carb tune and 19psi boost and a bit of weight pulled out of the car should see you there. |

Subject: tuners Question: hi wiz me again,i just enjoy talking to you, lol,,,just wondering were do most people take ther gt turbos for a tune and set up,the last person to touch my car was mike spencer ms motorsport,he was very good and made it really fast,it needs a rolling road tune by some 1 who no how these cars work and has good rollers 4 a decent accurate printout, spoke to a freind and he seid western performance in birmingham is good, have u heared of them?,im from the bristol area but travelling isnt a problem Answer: i know western performance very well.... they are good, but there are rolling roads closer to you who also have a good rep. have you thought abou buying an AFR meter and doing it yourself though? Mr Spencer was well known for making some of his customers cars go pop. but thats another story. |

Subject: tuning Question: iv never heard of a afr metre,it would be good tuning my own car my self, could u tell me what it is and how it functions? how much etc ?...,i take it you dint like mr mike spencer,i am a new member so havant been on here long.. Answer: AFR meter = air fuel ratio meter. it measures the voltage a wideband lambda probe produces. - i.e it can tell you if you are running lean or rich. you adjust the carb jets yourself and see what happens to those readings. look up 'AFR' on the boards, there are alot of threads on it. I don't have any thoughts on Mr Spencer, although there are plenty of people on the site who do. |

Not sure if its related but took one spark out turned over and seem to backfire but not turn on help! chirs Answer: take the carb top off and spray deodorant down the carb throat area whilst cranking the car. this will force it to start. if it doesnt then , you have to look at the carburettor alittle further.... |

Subject: indicators Question: hi mr wizard, my rear passanger indicator works but the side and front one doesnt, i cant find a fault with the wiring so could i run new wires from the rear of the car to supply the 2 non working ones? or is there anything else you can think to check?
