Subject: poor idle and performance

Question:
i brought a new carb and had it set up and the engine was sweet . drove it like i stole it and afterwards it never idle correctly and it gets worse when its hot and backfires ive changed the plugs, cap, rotor arm, leads, fuel filter,i also had it gas tested for head gasket and no fault found can you please give me some good advice wiz do the biz

Answer:
check the pipe that goes from the inlet manifld to the aei. also check the dumpvalve diaphram isnt leaking - suck on the vac pipe into it. also check that the aei advance capsule is ok, by sucking on the pipe into it. - if they leak the diaphram internally is feckered.

also...take out your idle jet- the large brass screw on the side of the carb- then take it apart, and make sure there is no swarf in the end of it.- hold it up and look at a light, see if the small hole in the end of it is free of crap.

Subject: typre sizes

Question:
hi wiz,
i have a acquired a set of compomotive alloys and i am trying to find the best rubber for the car.
the wheel details are 7x15 pcd 100, et 35, c/bore 60.2

Someone mentioned TOYO Proxs 888 but think they come at 195 50 15... Will that fit on a phase 2 with standard suspension?
Are there any other tyre's too be recommended?
thanks

Chris

Answer:
195/50 r15 will fit ok on standard suspension, but there is alot of sidewall on them, and they may look alittle 'tractor-y' if they do a 195/45 R15 then always go for them.
the r888's are getting alot of good press recently, but it depends what you want to do with the car. they might not last that long on the road...although i do know that you can get different hardnesses of compound, which should affect grip and tyre life.
i personally just got a set of original uniroyals, but thats cos i use 13" original wheels- i like the dangerous life of limited wet grip.... ;)

Subject: Engine Rebuild Question?

Question:
Hi Wizard
Okay i'm rebuilding the engine and have new pistons and liners but wish to reuse the old conrods.
BUT i don't know how to seperate the Pistons from the conrods? Is it any easier popping them in the cooker at a really high temperature when the fiancee isn't looking in the hope of any expansion making it easier pressing them out??
I'm stuck never rebuilt an engine before.

Answer:
just use a press to press them out, you will wreck the old pistons though! the new ones require heated conrods and ice cold gudgeon pins to fit them properly.
best give it to the professionals! cos if you mess that part up, then you will have real probs getting it out without messing the new pistons up!

Subject: carb needs adjustment constantly

Question:
hi wiz i adjusted my carb and it ran nicely. Then i thrashed it and it needed adjusting again. This has happended a few times now. It was a new carb. Is that why it did that? someone said to me it could be tdc sensor/head gasket? would appreciate any help. thanx wiz

Answer:
how do you mean it needs adjusting? is it that it doesnt wanna idle properly after thrashing it?
if that is the case then, you need to strip and clean the carb properly..... as it sounds like you got crap in your idle circuit.

Subject: carb needs adjusting constantly part 2

Question:
hi wiz both the idle and mixture need adjusting after a trash and it wont idle well or stalls intill readjustment i ve never let my fuel get that low and when it for a mot it took the mot tester major playing with to get it to pass the emission and said he had to lean it off a fair bit and when i drove it it was backfiring at about 2000 rpm and no real power i did nt dare to push it i hope this info helps u to help me thanx wiz

Answer:
the mixture screw and the idle jet should both have rubber seals on them, check them first.
id also advise removing the carb, dismantling it and soaking in petrol to remove and crap in it. id also spray out the jets and stuff with carb cleaner.
it dont matter if its new or not, a carb can still get crap in it.

Subject: Pigeon noise

Question:
ive heard it called wastegate chatter. Is it the air going thru the turbo backwards?

What amount of boost would be required to make such a noise?

Answer:
its not the wastegate. its air backing up inside the boost pipes and causing the blades to stall and release air back out through the turbo inlet.
the amount of boost required depends on the size of the turbo and the amount of air it can flow....as well as the size of the boost run.

Subject: Indicator troubles

Question:
Hey Wiz!
Recently I have started having problems with my
indicators.

They have always been a little intermittent!ha
All the bulbs are fine as are the holders, no blown fuses & relays seem ok!?!

But m.o.t time in jan so could do with sorting this problem out once & for all.

What advice could your give or an easy fix would be great!
Cheers,
Mike

Answer:
if you can, either clean up all the connectors going to the indicators, or chop em off and solder in new ones??? the connectors seem to attract crap and thus corrode like a good'un!

Subject: is flutter safe?

Question:
in my last question i asked about a pigeon noise. stalling the turbo and chopping the air.

is this safe for the turbo.

Answer:
ultimately no.

its a bit like when you are giving it 20psi with your missus and mid stroke you accidentally pop out and bend your pushrod against her rockercover. if it happens too many times the pushrod is rendered useless....

Subject: flashing managerment light i think

Question:
hi wiz, there is a yellow light which is on the dash, top right hand corner. when i was driving the light flickered a few times and went off. im still having idling and performance problems and the carborator needs constant adjusting and it is down on power. are these 2 problems related to the ecu. thanks

Answer:
there is no ecu on the gt turbo, just an ignition computer. the light you are talking about sounds like the brake pad warning light or the rear heated window light. what does the light look like?

Subject: smoke

Question:
in hi revs smoke comes out of the exhaust and there is a chattering noise under the bonnet. is the turbo ***ed ?

Answer:
what sort of chattering noise? - sounds like the engine rather than the turbo is funked. the smoke could be due to heavy breathing. - check that the breather system is clear of obstruction and also do a compression check to see that the rings are ok in the engine.

Subject: Starting problems

Question:
Hi happy new year, I have been in Iraq for the past 3 months and i left my H reg 5gt in my garage in Germany where the temp gets between -5 at night to -1 in the day at the mo. On my return the battery was flat so i charged it although the tester reads ok and not charged after along time charging. when i try to start her up she just turns over very slowly 2-3 times then dies even with the car battery hooked up to a fast start charger plugged to the mains. the bat is a renault maint free ,provided by k-tec less than a year ago ,, i hope it is just the battery and not something siezed up as its been left in the freezing temps for so long. it had an oil change and was working fine 3 months ago,
Thanks Dan,
Sorry for the huge read

Answer:
try cleaning up the earth and positive connections to the battery first.
if no joy, buy a new battery- although try and warm the battery up indoors before you fit and try it, as the cold cranking amps will be better!- must be over 15deg C!!!
to try and get the car started ASAP, i advise popping off the boost hose onto the carb top and squirting 3secs worth of deordorant in there! then immediately try and start the car.

Subject: Which cam to choose?

Question:
Which cam would be best to use?

Piper 285 Cam

or

Piper 300 Cam

I want the car for fast road spec so I'm leaning towards the 285 but what will be the differences with the 300 cam?

Answer:
do you want the cam to be punchy? - piper 285.... or have a long torque curve? - piper 300...

I always suggest the 285 for most applications.

Subject: Intercooler thermo flap not opening fully

Question:
Hey wiz,

Took my OE intercooler out the other day to strap it and thought I'd test the thermo flap jobby while it was out. I put a room heater on it and heated it up to about 52 degrees and the flap only opened up the core by about half a centimeter, should it be fully open at that temperature?

Cheers

Answer:
im not sure what the flap opening to temperature correlation is...however..the air temp out of the turbo is higher than 52deg i can assure you. :)

Subject: Side exit on a Clio GTT?

Question:
I'm thinking about buying a side exit exhaust for my Clio GT Turbo but I'm wondering how its going to fit.

What are the chances of it fitting similarly to how it would sit on the 5 GT Turbo?

Answer:
it will fit very similar, the car is slightly longer, with a similar shaped exhaust as standard. you may have to modify a few of the brackets though....

Subject: Fuel tank pipes

Question:
Hi Wiz,
I changed my main fuel tank the other day and ever since i've been having fuel supply problems. I thought that maybe it was a dodgy fuel pump relay although i admit it does seem like a big coincidence. So i removed the relay and bridged the wires and the supply problem was fixed temporarily. But now when i connect the wires up to bridge it, its not working. What i did notice was that when it was working is that you connect the wires and the pump starts whining then after a second when the pressures changes and it starts actually pumping petrol that the tone of the whining changes, if this makes sense ? Anyway since its stopped working when you connect the wires up it starts to whine but the tone doesnt change as if its just pumping fresh air. So what im thinking is that i mixed up the 3 pipes at the fuel sender when changing the tank. Do you think this could be causing the problem and which way round do they actually go ? I have looked in the haynes but i cant find a diagram. I'm almost sure i got the one on the right, right as this is the one with the t-piece isnt it ? So do you know which pipes go where off the sender ?
Sorry for the essay and thanks in advance. Jay

Answer:
jay the whiring you are hearing is the transfer pump kicking in. for some reson when(im not sure why) you bridge the fuel pump relay the transfer pump kicks in
as for the pipe fitting your gonna have to work out wot fuel pipe does wot. bassicaly follow the route of the pipe find were it goes. on the tank unit there should be arows on the top pointing flow in and flow out

Subject: oil in boost pipes and dump valve

Question:
Hello I have alot of oil residue in my boost pipes and intercooler , also oil on the underside of the bonnet where the dump valve sits and on the dump valve , ive taken the pipe off the turbo there is a very slight movment of the internals, its had a new oil feed pipe too.
Cheers Dan

Answer:
fit an oil breather filter first, and block the hole in the turbo inlet pipe that blows oily vapour into the turbo..... do this before you condemn the turbo.

Hi apart from body work can you tell me how to tell the difference between the phase 1 and 2 gtt.
Is the phase 2 turbo oil cooled.

Answer:
there re loads of differences. why do you want to know? is it to find out what your car is?
if so....

if the aei over the turbo or in the scuttle tray?

are the strut top nuts in the centre of the hole or recessed?

there are loads of threads mention this topic i think?

hi wizard i have a project five that will be on the road towards the end of the year but i want a custom dash made i.e a all in smooth dash similar to an aircraft ***pit look so i can have gauges on show and move all switches onto toggle switches any suggestions many thanks phil

Answer:
yes it actually easier than you might think.
firstly get chicken wire, make general shape of dash you want. then paper mache over the top of it. then put fibre glass resin over that., use body filler to smooth over larger areas, and sand down till you get the shape you want. the space underneath will be big enough to feed the wiring loom, and you can make areas to accomodate the switch gear...

Hi, I have a crack in the exhaust housing of my T25 turbo. Is it useless? Am I able to just change the exhaust housing another one?

Also will the housing from a T2 fit?

I've checked the other side of the turbo, and theres no play at all and all seems ok that end.

if you do want to change it, make sure you replace like for like. check to see the a/r number on the housings are the same first of all.
