Subject: WHEEZING COUGH COUGH

Question:
Hi wizard do you remember my questions about my dieing gtt? question i.d: 6485 and 6489. well all that was the result of a faulty relay! the solderings in the relay had heated up and everytime it was on and heated up it was unsoldering it self. crazy stuff. i have another dilemma which i did ask you about the wheezing noise or whiring noise which is happening i was helping a friend with his gtt and we took off a pipe i noticed somthing in it it was a ristrictor i put one in my pipe and it reduced the noise, i know there is more then one risrictor in the pipes but in which pipes and how many there is i dont know. i remember seeing a air flow diagram on here and it showed where all the ristrictors were, but do you think i can find it. do you have pics and digrams of how many and which pipes the ristrictors are in. many thanks regards!

Answer:
the pipe from the one way inlet manifold valve to the T piece has a 1.7mm restrictor in it. the pipe from the T piece to the turbo inlet pipe has a 7mm restrictor in it.

Subject: wheezing

Question:
thanks wizard regarding question id 6534 do you have a link or pictures of this broken down because i dont know what pipes your talking about? is there a picture with them clearly marked so i can see where they are thanks for the help your truly are a gtt wizard! regards

Answer:
Can't find a picture, but if you follow the small pipe that's connected to the air-filter u-bend/'telephone' hose, that goes to a plastic T-piece.

In the pipe I've just mentioned, there should be a 7mm restrictor inside it, but it's not so important if this is missing. The important one, as far as idling is concerned, is the 1.7mm restrictor that's in the 'base' connection of the T-piece (not the 'arms') - The pipe from that goes round to the inlet manifold via a non-return valve, and again, the restrictor should be in that pipe, or maybe possibly pushed into the T-piece.

Question:
alrite, i need a urated fuel pump and have found 1 but the preasure is 5 bar and flow rate is 110-160(l/h) and thought this might be a bit to powerful?? al be runnin bout 20psi, cheers

Answer:
It should be ok, but you might be on the limits of the standard fpr with that much inlet pressure.

You'll be able to run 20psi with the o.e fuel pump still in situ.

Subject: Drivers side driveshaft

Question:
I've just been putting my driveshafts back in (3 years on) and noticed that only the passenger side driveshaft has gearbox oil going to it. Do I need to pack some sort of grease into it? I'm sure it does not say anything about this in the haynes but it I presume it does'nt run dry. Your advice would be appreciated.

Answer:
no you do not pack it with grease. the gearbox oil lubes it up nicely.

Subject: heater

Question:
i cannot get my heaters to work all wires ok and fuses i am getting despertate due 2 ineed them working 2 bleed my radiator

Answer:
You don't need the heater fan working to bleed the radiator. Release the header-tank from its bracket, hold up high, make sure it's full of water, then undo the bleed screws. Keep the water topped up, then tighten the bleed screws when no more air/bubbles is present.

Job done.

Answer:
Be careful you don't snap the plug, or ruin the thread (further), as then you will be in poo street.

Might be worth just running a relevant sized tap up & down the thread a couple of times.

Subject: Carb Gasket/s

Question:
Hi again. I'm currently putting the 5 back together from taking it apart 3 years ago hence all the questions.
This one is about the carb gasket.
Does a gasket have to go either side of the black plastic spacer (i.e above and below) or just ontop of it. I have two of the same gaskets lying about, both new and this is why I'm a bit confused.
Thanks again.

Answer:
Yep, 2 gaskets are used. One below and one above the plastic spacer.

are you sure you dont have a manifold or exhaust leak? - if the rocker cover is leaking you can always see it, as the engine tilts backwards slightly.

Subject: Camber

Question:
Hello wizard my name is Tiny

I have been discussing camber with a number of people including that very tall old man in this club and that other man with the multi-coloured car. (I think his name is Mandy??)

Anyway... would it be acceptable to 'oval-out' the top hole where the strut bolts to the hub for some adjustment? - That way was suggested to me by the local banger racers who do it all the time.

Thankyou Mr Wizard

Tiny
aged 4 & 3/4

Answer:
Oval out or elongate? wink

You mean Colin & Andy wouldn't let on such a well known trick? They must really dislike you big grin

Subject: Clutch bearing

Question:
Lets see if you can help with this one...

I've started getting a noise from the engine when idling and general driving... a constant squeeking noise...

At first i thought the clutch bearing had gone as when i put my foot on the pedal and depress just 2mm it stops.. But if i just put my finger on the clutch fork it stops - i.e. no pressure on the bearing, just holding the fork, the noise goes. Any ideas?

P.S. i didnt appreciate your comment about Col and Andy not loving me... they love me long-time old-skool stylee.. as do you.

One love.

Answer:
The answer is in the subject title.

And no, I've checked, they don't like you at all big grin

Subject: Cutting out?

Question:
Hi Wizard my car's cutting out when i stop at light's or when there's no gas? i've got a big sound system and i noticed my light's go brighter when i put gas on could this be why? would a battery do this? or is it carb probs many thanks.Dan

Answer:
Could be excessive current draw causing the alternator to spit its dummy out, or could be the old favourite of the idle jet being slightly blocked.

What's the idle like when you aren't trying to implode your ear drums?

Subject: Head Gasket Worries

Question:
Ive had my 5 for a week and i just checked the oil cap, and theres a tiny bit of white liquid in the cap. Has my gasket blown already? There is no steam/smoke from the exhaust, temp runs below half way. The head gasket was replaced by the previous owner a few months ago, how long is a gasket likely to last? and how much is it going to be to replace?

Answer:
Given the current weather/temperature, it could just be condensation.

Do a compression test and pressure check the water system if you want to play safe though.

Subject: sewing machine

Question:
Why does my engine sound like a tappety old sewing machine, is this normal as i know they are push rod engines?
Cheers merlin!!

Answer:
Valve clearances probably want adjusting, or it could be worn/pitted faces on the rocker shaft arms.
