Subject: TWIN CARBS

Question:
WOULD TWIN CARBS 32DIS ON MY FUEGO TURBO A5L ENGINE ALLOW BETTER AIR FLOW ? OR SHOULD I GO THE FUEL INJECTION ROUTE ?

Answer:
Twin carbs will be an improvement (think venturi size), but full efi will be more beneficial in the long run for sure.

Subject: blue smoke

Question:
Hi Wizz,
Firstly i fitted a mechanical oil pressure gauge and seems to be ok i.e. when warm oil pressure at 900-1000 r.p.m. between 25-30 psi.
My question is when the car got upto temp it started smoking, blue smoke, which i believe to be oil. It doesn't smoke when cold (only a bit of condensation). So the only places i think it could be burning is the turbo or through the stem seals. Any ideas??
Next, i was looking at my boost/vaccum gauge and when the engine was cold i.e. just started the vaccum was 20 inches or mercuary (which i believe to be 9-10 psi) but when it started smoking i revved the engine (smoke got worse) when i backed off the accelerator the vaccum only read 10 inches of mercuary (5 psi), i read somewhere that a constant low reading of vaccum at idle can mean that the timing is out, valve clearances are wrong or poor condition of piston rings, wouldn't of thought it to be piston rings as i only changed the pistons and liners last summer and done 0 miles since. Or i suppose it could just be a simple vaccum hose leak??
I have had trouble getting the car to idle at correct revs, with vaccum at 20 in/hg plus no smoke it was ticking over at 1.5k. When warm with 10in/hg plus blue smoke was ticking over at 900 r.pm. Is this pointing towards a timing problem?? i.e. the aei module vaccum bit or maybe tdc sensor???
Sorry for going on.
any thoughts would be greats
andy

Answer:
Yep, could be turbo, seals, or even piston rings/scored liner causing blowby.

It's also been known for v thin oil to cause problems as well - What viscosity rating does your oil have?

Interesting about the vacuum readings - Have you compression tested the engine recently? May point to worn rings/liners after all, but then you say you've not ran any miles on them, so maybe it could simply be that they've not fully bedded in yet?

In fact, have you actually ran the engine in thoroughly yet? If not, I wouldn't worry about a bit of smoke and varying vacuum readings just yet.

Subject: thermostat part 2

Question:
hi wiz
with regards to your previous answer i has no thermostat in the car since i bought it a year ago,no air locks as the system was bled well..could it be the rad

Answer:
No thermostat? Ahh, that explains it then wink

Nowt wrong with the temp' reading anyway - It's when it goes above the 11 o'clock line, into the red, that you need to worry.

For future reference, always run the engine with a thermostat in situ.

Subject: dunno

Question:
hi wizz i recently put a in car kit in and refurbed the carb all was good for a day or so i was runnin at 14psi and then the car started boostin later and the standard boost gauge goes right round and on full boost it stops boostin and dies down to half boost and boosts again.ive checked for leaks took the in car kit off to see if it was that but still the sameive unplugged the ob sensor but still this happens the car don tcut out just the boost im thinkin actuator can u help

Answer:
Does the car actually slow down, or is it just a case of the boost gauge needle dropping off?

It could be something silly like an actuator pipe has come off, or you've created an air leak to the actuator feed.

Try not to let it boost right up when re-testing it again, as if you're running std carb jetting, you'll be after a replacement headgasket (or worse) sooner rather than later!

Answer:
What c.o values are you getting?

Running lean could indicate a slight air leak lower than the venturi.

Time to start checking for those air leaks.

Start with the o-ring on the mixture screw itself.

Answer:
put the 130main in and turn it up to 17psi max. you will then have to start thinking about uprated fuel pumps.

Subject: Leaky sunroof

Question:
Howdy

Ive got an E reg GT Turbo, its a phase 1.5 and has a sunroof, not sure if its a factory fitted one or not (it looks well done, same coloured roof cloth, all electric ect ect ) however it has never worked since i got the car and leaks like a bastard, and i mean alot lol
I cant find a place in the north west that does sunroofs any more so what im wandering is, is there a way of replacing the roof or part of it cos its leaky and not that i can see it on the outside but pretty certain its rusty on the inside?

Thnx Wiz

Answer:
You could take the sunroof out and plate it that way, or remove the whole roof altogether and replace. Not a cheap job, and you'll need to be handy with cutters, welding gear, and a spray compressor.

Another option, would be to lift out the sunroof glass, squirt sealant galore around the base, then refit the sunroof. It shouldn't leak then, but then you'll not be able to open it again either.

Subject: all electrics cut out

Question:
if the engine is cold and i switch the head lights on or off the whole electrical system cuts out even the horn and interior light has no power,if i then just wait about 2 mins the power goes back on,i have checked battery, and also all earthing points,i think i might of tracked it down to a relay which i think is the ignition cut off relay it is situated next to the aei module and clipped on to the bulk head could you tell me if this relay might cause thease symtoms cheers

Answer:
Nope. That's just the overboost relay and has no effect on the light circuit.

Sounds like a dodgy feed and/or earth to me.

Subject: will this t3 fit?

Question:
hi, came across a t3 turbo with t3 flange and .42 a/r cold housing, model number is TA3319. will this fit my clio gtt? i think my car as a t25 flange on it. if it will fit, im guessing i will need a flange converter?

Answer:
It won't fit as is.

What size is the turbine wheel and exhaust housing?

Chances are it'll be too laggy regardless.

Question:
just had car mot'd and the anti roll bar had ecessive play and was told end bushes need replacing, is there an article or can you advise. is it an easy job?

Answer:
If your only swapping the end/outer bushes then its a doddle - undo the clamps and slip off the old bush. Refiting is reverse of removal smile

Subject: white residue

Question:
help me please ive now put togher my first r5 every thing seemed to be ok, Drove it up and down lane just to make sure every sounds right. Was checking the levels of every thing and i noticed white residue under the cap (i hope this isnt what i think its) or could it be that i need to give the engine more time to settle in. The levels of every thing were sound there was no exesive use of water the oil levels were fine. please help before i tourch it.

Answer:
white residue dont mean diddly squat. the oil gets hot, when it cools down water condenses with it. as you heat the oil up again the water boils off and causes the mayo effect on the rocker cover.
if u doubt this, then by al means do a compression check this will tell you.

Question:
nice one man is there an optimumn wheel size iv read most of the threads and i c`n a few guys struggle to find the rite ex housing resulting in poo spool up or none at all ? wud a turbo company/dealer advise us on this ? eg wheel sizes, a/r. ?

Answer:
There is no optimum with a turbo - You match it as best you can to your application; ie, drag strip, track driving, around-town driveability, etc.

More than enough info on the boards over the years regarding various turbos and how they perform on drag/track/road. Have a read and draw your own conclusions smile

Subject: Starting New Engine - For The First Time

Question:
Due to other commitments my re-built engine has been in storage for several (at least 4) months. Can you advise the best procedure when I start it for the first time, also how best to approach running in.

As the car won't be MOT for a few weeks, should I let it idle while stationary in the garage or wait until its roadworthy?

The following items have been reconditioned:

New Liners, Pistons and Liner Seals
Reground Crank
New Main, Big and Small end Bearings
New Oil Pump
New Timing Chain and Tensioner
New Valve Stem Oil Seals
Re-ground Valves
All new Gaskets

Thanks

Tom McGinniss

Answer:
There's various opinions on running engines in, ranging from the softly softly approach to bedding the components in, to letting it initially warm up, oil change, then giving it death.

Just make sure the oilways/bottom-end/turbo are properly primed with oil (ie, disconnect the ht king lead and crank the engine for half a minute or so) before actually firing up the engine.

On initial start-up/firing, leave the enging idling, warm right up so that the fan comes on a few times, then switch off, dump the oil & filter, put new oil & filter on, then drive it.

Subject: reverse light

Question:
do you have any idear why my reverse light dont work lik a fuse i dont know about or some thing thank you

Answer:
test the switch on the gearbox, near the passenger side driveshaft. pull the plug off it, and using a small piece of wire, join the two connections in the plug...it should light the reverse light up. if it does, then ur switch is knackered- get another one, drain the gearbox and refit it.

Subject: thermostat

Question:
hi wiz i was just thinking my top hose did not have a thermostat in today when i was changing the water pump but the heater was still blowing hot air through is there only one place you can put the thermostat it seams to be running fine and the fan comes on when she gets just over the first mark on the temp gauge it seams kinda funny i didnt see the thermostat i have checked everything over and all seams ok it has a good flow off water comming back into the header tank through the colling system hope you can help cheers ste

Answer:
Yep only one place for the standard thermostat, in the end of the top hose at the water pump end, if it was their, you would have seen it. The coolant will heat up without a thermostat, but the temp when running will not be regulated properly, so I'd suggest you get one & fit it asap. Standard one is 83deg. wink
