Subject: Pinking!!!!

Question:
Hello Wizard i have had my engine rebuilt on my 5 and i have finally got it running again, now it runs sweet as a nut while idleing as well as when you rev it up. it also drive like a dream apart from when i reach top boost (About the b on the boost gauge) it sounds like it is pinking! i have looked into the problem and i have found that i cannot change the dwell angle as the timing is controlled by the ecm! the car will drive perfectly with a low boost and somtimes the noise fades out or doesn't appear at all but it is still quite worrieing if you could help in anyway i would be greatfull!!
Cheers Kris

Answer:
if you loop the pinking detector lead out, like they did on the ph 1's then yu get 6° retard. this will soon tell you if its pinking or not. i bet it isnt. i think you got a rattle somewhere. however - check the diaphragm is ok inside the aei, also check the head depth is above 72.5mm. smile

Subject: engine

Question:
hi iv done a compression test on all 4 pistons and 1 2 3 are 10 and number 4 is 3 iv took the head off and the head gaskit has a little burn mark on it. iv been told to put oil on the pistons but if the oil gos down does this mean the rings are fcuked there is no marks on the liner or the piston at all

Answer:
check the metal fire rings on the gasket. do they all look circular, or does one look oval?
is the head flat?
is the valve ok>- maybe you need to take the valves out and regrind them in.

Subject: Pinking Part 2

Question:
hello again! thanks for your advice the other day! while carrying out the test's that you told me to try i found that my head depth is about 70mm!!! what sort of problems is this likely to cause for me? and do you think that this could be the cause of my pinking type noise? Thanks again! Kris

Answer:
yes, 70mm is far to thin!- i usually say no more than 72.5mm - but thats only cos i got away with it for a while!
you could try grinding bits of the squish area out of the head to lower the compression again. or use alot of headgaskets all together laugh

Subject: inlet breathing

Question:
hi wiz
im running a mod breather setup an i have been told to put a bolt in the right hand side breather inlet on the back of the inlet manifold. but when i do it dosent like to idle properly, but if i leave it with a breather filter on it seem fine any ideas or is it fine to leave a filter on it hope im not been to vague lol cheers

Answer:
best put the bolt in and adjust the mixture/ idle screw accordingly. you are just letting air into the manifold otherwise.

Subject: timing light

Question:
how many degrees should the timing light give when my engine is at idle speed and what should it be when my engine is held at about 3000 revs?

Cheers Kris

Answer:
im not sure on this one....mainly cos u cannot change the timing, unless you start moving the whole map about by using the timing sensor mods...
why do you need to know?

Subject: Other turbos?

Question:
Hi, Just wondering which cheap turbos i can fit to my r5 for example can the rs turbo t3 fit? if not, then what should i look for in a turbo to know if it can fit since i want to keep the turbo budget low. Currently have the ktr180 but looking for something capable of 30+ psi and kicks in at between 3000rpm-4000rpm.

Answer:
you will need a turbo with a 360° thrust washer to cope with 30psi. a budget turbo- i.e off another car will not have this as standard, and consequently will die quick and be a waste of money. id stick with what u got...
whats the ktr180 rated to anyway?
whats ur idea of cheap?

Subject: which intercooler?-clio gtt

Question:
Hi, was wondering whats the most boost the double capacity intercooler can hold? want to be able to boost to in the region of 30psi and because of the conversion, things would be tidier with a fmic. which fmic from a used car is good? and would it be safe to run the piping using alloy pipes and silicon elbows mainly? cheers

Answer:
yes u can use pipe and silicone joiners.
but...
off the top of my head i cant think of an all alloy intercooler that is fitted to a production car that will fit directly into a clio gtt.
maybe a cossie one, but they aint that big...
once again, you may have to shell out for this!
try thsparts.co.uk or look on ebay for intercoolers wink

Hi, I bought a custom carb top which was bored out and the holes were properly filled in from the plate removal. he says its less restrictive than the grp A and that the fastest 1/4 mile r5 runs the same thing. I've never bought a grp a carb before and just wondering if this carb top i've got will do the same as the grp a or is the grp a's main venturi bored as welll, because all i have now is a changed carb top.

Answer:
the grp a's venturi is bored as well.

Subject: Timing Light!! part 2

Question:
while testing my 5 for pinking (before i realised it was controlled by the aei) i put on the timing light and it gave me a reading of 36 degrees at idle which seemed odd! other people have also said it seemed odd, that is why i asked the question. does that seem odd to you?

oh and also what would i need to change if i changed my standard cam to a fast road cam? (From Piper)
Thanks again Kris!

Answer:
what is the fast road cam?- the 285 or the 270?? 270 u dont need the uprated springs, the 285 you do....

what should the timing be? - i dunno. you need dialogsis?

Subject: burn out

Question:
hey wiz, wondering if u could help me. i had a frantik fone call from my mother yesterday in a panik as there was smoke coming out of my car. wich was on the drive and hadnt bin driven all day. wen i got bak to my car it was full of smoke, but no flames. luckaly

for sum reason its melted a brown wire in the gray connector block in the driverside foot well. the wire runs through the dash and also in to the bulkhead near the pedals.

1) wat does this wire controll?
2) y did it melt?
3) how much is a new loom going to cost me?

thanks in advance for any info u can give me.

Answer:
1) Not sure off the top of my head. Check the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual.
2) Crystal ball isn't working today, but I'd say it's a live feed to something which shorted to earth/chassis.
3) Your local Renault garage will know.

Subject: Best Exhaust

Question:
Hi wiz, what after market exhaust gives a 5gt the most power gain? Also, what is the loudest dump valve for a 5?

Answer:
Probably a side-exit as it's the less restrictive.

Forge grp A is supposedly the loudest if that's your cup of tea.

Subject: Other turbos? part 2

Question:
well, the ktr180 is rated to 20psi and should produce 180bhpat that on a well setup engine. I want more like 250bhp at least, since i will be running a boost controller and won't run it hard all the time. Also, my budget for a new turbo depends on the resale value of the ktr180 plus probably £100 on top(£300)

Answer:
You'll be lucky to find a turbo that helps produce that amount of power for a few hundred quid, and even more lucky to squeeze said amount of power out of the c1j, unless you plan on extensively tweaking the engine.

hi wiz, sorry for so many questions, but this is the last one for now....when i bought my car, the seller said it had a stage 3 head on it. how do i find out if this is true?

Answer:
Define 'stage 3'. It could have larger inlet valves, reworked ports, matched manifold ports, etc.

Subject: Running Rubbish

Question:
so annoyed...!! Had my car set up using gas analyser, so it was running and ideling fine. Was driving around for about an hour then all of a sudden it cut out at a junction. Started up again and pulled away and bang bang on the overrun and no idle on stand still. Its gone back to running too rich......How can that be?? surely the mixture screw can't of worked its way out! Now im back to square one! when set up again is it just gonna happen again? Please help im losing patience with my 5.

Answer:
Has the mixture screw got its rubber O-ring still in place? Not only does the o-ring seal the tube it also stops the mixture screw rotating due to vibration. As for the no idle, check that the idle jet (big brass screw on o/s of carb) is clean!

Subject: Compressor surge

Question:
Hi Wiz, what's the maximum boost pressure I can run without a dump valve? I've got a brand new T25 turbo, i'm bored of the dump valve noise, want some nice compressor surge to wake up the neighbours!! But don't want to destroy my turbo! Cheers Wiz.

Answer:
Well, the more boost you run the more the compressor will surge when you close the throttle, and so the pressure on the thrust bearing increases. As such, there isn't a specific boost limit, you just have to know that the more boost you run the more the turbo will wear.

But in reality the surge does little to harm the turbo as its surging for such short periods of time, so go for it smile

Subject: 170 bhp

Question:
Hello MR Wizard, I have spoken to several people on the subject of the best way to get 170 bhp at flywheel and had several views/opinions,I know the 5 world is unlike any other where bigger exhausts give good gains, i would like your opinion on said subject,Main factor is i use car on daily basis, also have a t25 hybrid and front mount intercooler ready to fit, so what next in your valid opinion? thank you.
MR Swag
PS Have scorpion pipe,Raid induction,Cyril wilcox dumpvalve(on when bought car) and the tdc sensor cut and swap wires mod done so far.

Answer:
Sounds like you've covered 2 of the important things already. the bigger turbo will help alot, and better intercooling is always a good thing. But, the most important thing of all is fueling. Be sure to have the carb setup right. I gues for 170hp you'll need about 18psi of boost in the manifold. Also, beware of the TDC wire-swap mod, it'll make the engine want to detonate easier as you wind the boost up, expecially if your head's ever been skimmed. You may also need the valeo/volvo 480 clutch as you'll be reaching the limit of the standard jobbie.

Question:
Hope you can help me,my headlights work fine.
But driving home from work and I found my headlights had gone to sidelights without me touching light stalk.

I then turned them back one click to the side light setting and then back to full headlights and they came back on.

This has happened serveral times and I can't workout why this would happen!

Could it be the relay?

Many Thanks.

Answer:
Probably the stalk itself.

Subject: no gears

Question:
hi wiz,i recently put a clutch from techni clutch in put a new renault cable in and replaced the ratchet on the peddal and i cant get no gears ive fed the cable te right way i think and reset the ratcht but i stil cant get owt but if i stamp to the floor while sum one pulls the cable from the engine bay i get all gears??????

Answer:
Could be that the cable has stretched, it's been re-routed incorrectly, or that you simply haven't reset the quadrant correctly/fully.

Try reseting it as far round as it will go, then slowly let the pedal rise (and click) to its resting postition.

If that's ok and has made no difference, then make sure the cable is routed the correct way (from pedal, runs along the rear of the subframe, under the oe airbox position, along to underneath the header tank as such, then onto the gearbox).

Again, if that's ok and has made no difference, try a new clutch cable.

Of course, all of this is assuming you've put the clutch plate the right way round! wink

Subject: Oil Pressure

Question:
Hi wiz,
The oil pressure on my car at tick over is sitting at 4 bar where as i have read on this site it should be at about 1.3 bar. When i rev the engine the oil pressure drops off dramatically. When it is ticking over there is white smoke but i am assuming this to be condensation as it has been sat on my drive for the last 5 months and not road worthy. I have looked at the pressure switch on the turbo oil feed pipe took it off and cleaned it, still the same. So i was thinking that either the pressure switch is nackered or the actual gauge (standard gauge on dash) has had it. Any suggestions appreciated. Also its still a bit lumpy on tick over, ticks over at 1k rpm but lumpy. Has a straight through exhaust and induction kit, standard turbo, so i dont know if that will effect it
cheers wizard

Answer:
just pay £35 for an aftermarket electrical gauge. this will solve all your woes...well it wont really, it will just tell you accurately that you aint running enough oil pressure.
ur standard gauge sounds decidedly dicky!

ive read previous questions and you say the same to get 200bhp cam cooler fueling turbo 20psi etc but is that 20psi at the carb top or 20 psi at the manifold

Could be either. There's no set rule to say X psi will give you Y bhp.

Subject: Oil breather

Question:
Hi Wiz,Merry christmas & all that.
Sure i read somewhere you can take the restrictors out & most of the hoses,do you have a diagram anywhere or a good description on how to do this?
Is it a good mod or not to do to the turbo?
Cheers
Steve

Answer:
There's a diagram of the 'Cup' oil breather pipework within this thread:

www.rtoc.org/boards/thread.asp?ShowType=1&SortColumn=1&SortOrder=2&TimePeriod=5&BoardID=&TopicID=41451

And if you 'search boards' with the keywords 'oil' and 'cup', there's threads galore about said breather setup.

Happy reading, and Merry Xmas to you as well.
