Subject: Non Starter -Dini/GT Conversion Question: its me again..followed ur advice & blocked the vacuums either side of the lower carb & looped the ones on the elbow bar the one that goes to the regulator. Basically it will not start, rebuilt the carb, have got fuel & spark, trys to run on full choke but then dies. Also noticed that it gets very slightly better when the boost elbow is removed ? p.s should I use 4 or 5 star when I torch the bugger? Answer: have you cleaned out the large brass screw on the side of the carb? what i suggest is using carb cleaner or break cleaner, and squirt it into the carb whilst turning it over- this will make anything start!!! if it starts to backfire then you have the leads on wrong. there is a possibility that the carb mechanism aint right and that when you pull the choke on, the accelerator plate is pushed on abit further. its controlled by a black plastic screw that comes in contact with the choke plate outside the carb. |

Subject: carb freeze Question: what is carb freeze? and how does it happen Answer: carb freeze is when the air entering into the carb is that cold, that the fuel doesn't vapourise and enters into the engine in an atomised state, which means that it doesnt burn properly and causes misfiring and all sorts of running problems. if you noticed the inlet manifold and the carb base have a water supply to them.... its not to cool them down, its to heat them up!!!! |

Subject: oil pressure guage Question: (Sometimes) on turning key into ignition position, the oil pressure guage will light up, and needle will go into correct position, but on firing, the needle drops right down to zero. On other occasions the needle wont even grant me a glimmer of erection-like stance. It always primarily lights up though. Oil pressure Im sure is fine, and oil level is fine im certain. However, im sure you can appreciate driving without an oil pressure guage is like dangling your wedding tackle in a lions mouth whilst slapping his love spuds with a wet towel....Never advised. Answer: the first movement of the needle in the ignition on position is the depth level sensor. once the car starts it shows oil pressure. do yourself a favour and buy an aftermarket electrical item

Subject: no power?? Question: when booting my 5, first secound and third rev's up as it should but when u put it in fourth the engine struggles to get over 4k rpm and fifth the rev's dont even move? but..... if you but it bk into fourth when the turbo isn't spinning it revs ok again?? iv just changed the vaccum tubbing~ do u think this could be the cause, i havent had the 5 long so dont know much about them. what size should the tubbing be?? cheers Answer: Could be a number of things, but I'd start with checking the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel regulator & piping (in particular the 'boost reference' pipe that goes from the carb elbow to fuel reg'), gauze filter in the carb inlet nozzle, and needle valve operation is good. |

Subject: Smoke from Exhaust Question: Car is going fine had good drive. Then just as I slowed done for a roundabout lifted off. Then a huge amount of oily smoke from the exhaust any ideas checked the oil level and it's fine, car doesn't run hot all seems fine apart from the smoke screen James Bond style. Cheers Answer: Does it now do it all the time, or was it just a one-off? If a one-off, don't worry If all the time...Do you still have the breather pipe connected to the turbo/air filter 'telephone' pipe? If so, remove it, put the pipe in a lemonade bottle (it's just for testing), block off the hole in the telephone hose, and take your car for a good, hard drive. When you get back, check the lemonade bottle - Any oil in there? If not, and if it's still smoking from the exhaust, it could be the turbo on the way out. If there is oil present in the bottle, and assuming the breather circuit is ok (ie, not blocked/caked in crud), then it could be a wee bit of blowby, thus suspect the piston rings/scored liners. |

Subject: over fueling Question: hi wiz, i just put my new engine in, mounting the pump at the front with the regulator and filter, but the pressure that the fuel is being pumped at is too great and is pushing the needle valve off its seat, so the pump carries on pumping fuel into/down the carb. checked the valve and all is working fine, any ideas wot could be happening????? Answer: well, for you to have too much pressure at the carb one of 3 things must be happening; 1/ your fpr is faulty 2/ you've connected the fpr up wrong 3/ you've got a blocked or restrictive return line no.1 is unlikely, but possible. no.2 is entirely possible. check that you have the feed from your pump entering the fpr at one end, the return should come off the bottom, the other end should feed the carb and the top pipe needs to see boost at carb top. no.3 is possible too. try disconnecting this and feeding it into a petrol can, then see if you get your 4psi at carb and see if the car runs. the type of fuel pump you use will largly have no bearing on this fault. |

Subject: re:oil pressure Question: buy an aftermarket guage??, but im wantin to keep it standard...i dont wanna get an extra guage...so what do u suggest? check the lead? or does it sound like a clocks problemo? Answer: No-one said you have to keep the gauge permanetly connected! Buy/borrow one for testing to make sure your oil pressure is ok, then remove the gauge afterwards. As for the dash gauge not working, check the sender on the block, the sender connections, wiring through the 'death connector from hell', wiring on the back of the dash is making good contact, and that the gauge connections are making good contact with the copper 'tracking'. |

Subject: Timing Question: Wiz thanks for all your previous help, it now runs after unblocking the brass cock pipe. It got better with a slight twist of the dizzy, how do adjust the timing on the Dini lump? My battered haynes manual says to use a strobe but I can't see any timing marks? Answer: Check the gearbox, left hand side of where the tdc sensor is located, and you'll see another void with some markings - That's the timing marks. |

Subject: fiesta vs r5.... Question: i was considering buying a fiesta rs turbo, aswell as keeping the 5...which do u think rates as greatest? me brother used to own both, he reckons fezza is quicker, but only once its going, off the line 5 will win...also, fiesta a bit more refined and comfortable, and a bit more reliable if looked after. What are ur opinions merlins of the french auto? any experiences to recant? Answer: Wizards of rtoc will always be biased towards the 5, so maybe you should ask the question on the 'general chat' board and see what feedback you get. Be warned though, it may get nasty ![]() Before that though, ask yourself this - How many fiesta rst's are hitting 12/sub-12 second runs at the Pod... |

Subject: carb Question: hey wiz, my 5 misfires when booting it hard( high revs ) am i right in thinkin that this is the air correcting jet at fault? am i best off buying another carb and seing if the problem is still there? cheers Lee Answer: Not necessarily. It could be any number of things ranging from a partially blocked needle valve, to a massively enlarged main jet (causing excess over-fuelling), to a weak fuel pump, a knackered fuel pressure regulator, choked fuel filter, sparkplugs breaking down, bad contact within the dizzy cap & rotor arm, poor contact @ tdc sensor lead, poor feed & earth at the aei, or even ye olde favourite, the overboost sensor kicking in if you've not removed it/adjusted it and are running high boost levels. That lot should keep you busy for a while ![]() |

Subject: Aftermarket cheapy alarm Question: i've brought myself a cheap alarm just something which flashes my lights and makes a bit of noise if someone trys getting hold of my speakers, but on the central locking i need to know if it is positive or negative trigger, be very grateful if you could help Answer: Can't remember off the top of my head, but the easiest way to check would be to lift out the central locking switch from the centre console, and check using a multimeter to see if there's any voltage on the pins/wires going to the door motors when the switch is pushed (as in to lock the doors). If you don't get any voltage, try seeing if there's earth continuity between the pins/wires and a good ground/chassis. If there's voltage when the switch is pushed, it's positive triggering. If there's earth continuity when the switch is pushed, it's negative triggering. |

Subject: watercooled to aircooled turbo Question: hi, just picked up a turbo for free : ) there is no play whatsoever in the shaft, but the guy said it smoked, can this be anything more than oil seals that have gone, am thinking of rebuilding it myself, also it's a watercooled one but mine is aircooled can i just bolt on or will i have to modify my car to watercool the turbo? if so i have no clue where to start, cheers Answer: It could be oil seals, or more than likely it's the bearing shot, and/or a bent shaft. They can be fitted to run without water going through them, but you may find you have to change the oil more often, due to the hotter temperature within the turbo breaking down the oil (viscosity) as it passes through the core. |

Subject: speedo / mileometer not working Question: The mileometer on the car has stopped working completely and the speedo now only reads up to about 50 mph. Any ideas would appreciated Answer: Assuming the gearbox connection is ok, check the 3-pin plug/connector that's usually attached onto the o.e air-filter housing bracket is making a good contact. If both ok, suspect either the wiring to the dash, or the speedo head itself. |

Subject: Oil Temps Question: HI Wiz long time no talk! I've just fitted an oil temp gauge on my car it takes the temp from by the oil filter. Now I can see what it's doing I was wondering what temp I should be worried by on the gauge as the water temp seems to be always on the move from 80-90 and back down to 80! where as the oil seems to sit at 90 almost all the time and has hit 95 when I've give the car a little beasting. By the way I am still using the standard rad for oil cooling! Thanks Andy Answer: Sounds fine to me Mr Logg. Oil & water temperatures should be fairly on par with each other, so I'd say it's running fine. Be interesting to see how the temp's fair at the next trackday you attend. Keep us posted old boy... |

Subject: radiator fan Question: hi when i stop my car and turn the ignition off the radiator fan keeps on going and wont stop ? any idea why ? Answer: Assuming it's not been wired directly to the battery/permanent 12v source, it could be that the fan relay has failed - It's located in front of the alternator, 'bolted' to one of the radiator deflectors. You can borrow/use the perc-fan relay to then check the fan operation is working as it should do. Could also be that the wires going to the fan switch sensor are short circuit. |

Subject: Adjusting enrichment springs Question: Hello there Mr W, Long time no queerie, but worry yee not, this should make up for the lack of contact. After settiing up my carb to fuel coorectly at no boost and full chat I'm finding that at about 5-10 psi I'm leaning off to about 16:1 afr. It has been sugggested that I should adjust or shim my 1st or 2nd stage enricment springs? How would I do this? By the way, which is first stage and second stage - big nobbley bit / small nobblely bit? PS I know I'm a nob. Andy Answer: i need more info on the carb- what venturi is it running? what other jets are you running with?- main and AC? leave springs alone until you sort this out for me. 1st stage is removeable jet, 2nd stage is bush in body/ needle jet. p.s ur not a knob, you're a caaaaaant! |
