Subject: Distributor / Piper 285 timing Question: Hi, i´ve fitted a 285 Piper camshaft kit. I had to adjust the timing for some degrees. Now i wanted to fit the distributor but it isn´t possible to fit it exactly 90 degress to the block. It´s only possible to fit it slightly before or after the 90 degrees. What should I do ?? Answer: you can either cut off one the lugs on the distributer base, or turn the distributer through 180°, and then use the clamp to hold it in place. turn the distributer so that the rotor arm faces one of the pegs inside the cap. sorted.... no need to worry! |

I have checked evrywhere and it states that the gap should be 6mm/24 thousands is this correct and do you think this is factory preset? I am confused as I remember asking you before and you advised 7mm/28 thousands. Is there a difference...what would would the difference be i.e larger the better gap or smaller.. Cheers.......... Answer: 0.6mm (as they come in the pack). Period. Don't worry about different gap sizes unless you're running mega high boost. |

Subject: in car fan switch Question: heyup, i had trouble with some electrical wires being melted and lost my in car fan switch and my normal fan switch, iv made my own as a temperary thing(permanent live from battery with inline fuse) but i want it bk to normal, is there a guide on how to fit a in car switch so i can start from scratch and help on how the normal fan switch is wired as there is a relay close by and think its for the fan switch but i just arnt sure! thanks Answer: Try the link below for a wiring diagram http://www.rtoc.org/library/file.asp?id=2116 Do not use a 15A fuse for the perc fan though, 7.5A is what you need. Also remember to fuse any live wires that are going inside the car for a manual switch. ![]() No real need for an in car switch if the system is working properly but I suppose if the sensor fails, then at least you have a means of turning the fan on. ![]() |

Subject: misfire on boost Question: iv asked u this before and your reply was that i should check the overboost sensor on the turbo to intercooler pipe, the samcos i have do not av a sensor fitted.the problem is when i boot it in 1st its fine but if i want to carry on booting it in 2nd it just pops and misfires.the gauge shows that it only goes up to 10psi.could this be the TDC sensor?it seems intact but is it worth replacing? or if the dump valve is losing pressure?please help its driving me nuts! Answer: No harm in replacing the TDC sensor, although I doubt that's your problem. If you want to rule out the dumb valve then take it out & plug the boost hose & aei line connections & see how the car runs then. It sounds like it could be fuel/carb related to be honest |

Subject: Chassis Number Question: G'day Mr Wizard. How's it going? I have a little problem i'd like you to help me with. I'm looking for my chassis number. I've recently had my car re-sprayed and i think they have sprayed over the number. Can you please tell me where it is usually stamped into the body work so that i can dig it out. Cheers. TAmbo Answer: The chassis number should be stamped in the body on the top of the drivers side suspension turret. If you stand next to the drivers wing looking into the engine bay it should be on the top side of the turret nearest to the wing. |

Subject: Interior Specialist Question: Hi live near Glasgow and I'm looking for a interior specialist to finish of my car. The interior has had leather and alcantera but there is some bits that need finishing ??? any help would be great Answer: You could drop Billy G or Miller (or any of the Scottish members) a PM as they may be able to advise of a decent company up that way. There's also Gibson & Boyne that frequent these boards, but they're based on the south coast, so not exactly local! Failing all that, there's the good old Yellow Pages. |

Subject: t28 hybrid Question: Hi wiz, Just put a t28 on my car and need to know what i need to do before i run the car properly, as in give it some. i was running 14 psi on a standard unit but was after a bit more power. can i still run 14 or maybe more than that? will i need to change jets in carb? ignition timing or anything like that, is there anyone on here that has done this before? just don't want to blow it up thats all. thanks Answer: i see you're selling the t28 on the classifieds, so there is really little point me answering this. however, putting in a 140 main jet and turning it up to 20psi could be done... assuming you got an uprated fuel pump and clutch. |

Subject: r5 Question: hi wiz i am thinking of going to look at another 5 to buy but the guy says there is a problem with the engine,he saya theres a weak spark so engine is running lumpy and also when car gets up to temp it starts to smoke any ideas is it fecked or can it be fixed thanks paul Answer: sounds dodgy. you need to do a compression check, also see what colour the smoke is. lumpy running could be sumat like head gasket or rings, or summat insignificant such as needs new leads or plugs... its a tough call! |

Subject: Radiator from other Renaults Question: I have prepared oil cooler and i'm planing to buy new radiator. I know that you recomended rads from other Renaults (5 or Clio diesel) but i have nice SFS hoses and would not like to cut 'em. So the question is... Can standard hoses fit any of these radiators? Answer: i was gonna call you an idiot, but im not that kind. think about this.... the whole point in buying the diesel rad is for what reason?- cos its larger. you cannot easily extend the rad so it pokes behind the alternator... so you gotta move it the other way. this will always mean that the standard gtt top water hose is too short. if you really were that worried by cutting your precious hoses, then fit a new gtt rad and not connnect the oil cooler. otherwise, get some nice bling chromed steel or ally pipe and make a alloy top water pipe that fits... |

Subject: t28 hybrid part 2 Question: you said that 20 psi can be done but im worried about the thing blowing up on me, at th mo i run 15 psi and it smokes from time to time already. it smells like it did before when the turbo went, sump is clean as i took it off before fitting new turbo, new braided oil feed. im worried about bottom end problems, may start looking for an uprated fuel pump now? got me thinkin. cheers Answer: fu ck the fuel pump, concentrate on the oil pump refurb kit! if you're blowing turbos left right and centre, do you know what your hot oil pressure reading is?- not on the standard shady gauge either! then get the fuel pump .... |

Subject: alloy tank cap Question: hi wiz im guna go and buy another 5 soon and am wanting to do it up angine wise, was wondering if you new were i could get a alloy header tank from but with the quick release type cap on.the last car which i had on my profile had one but was already on car and do not no were it was purchased, any help would be greatfull has would prefer this type to normal screw on cap thanks paul Answer: Pass. Why bother though? If you're having to remove the cap that often to top up the water, worrying about it taking a few seconds longer to undo than some 'nasa spec, mega-quick release, transcoreranium made' cap is the least of your problems. |

Subject: overboost sensor Question: hi can you tell me what the result is when the overboost sensor comes into play.my 5 runs well until the boost zone and then starts clunking and spluttering and just dosent like the boost at all, any info would be helpfull.cheers Answer: You've answered your own question. It's a failsafe device for boost hungry idiots, courtesy of Renault. Either drop the boost level you're running, or disconnect the pressure switch wires, but then you're into unknown territory if running standard fuelling, standard turbo, etc. If you choose the latter, remember this code for future reference: R11102 ![]() |

Subject: oil pressure Question: Hey wiz, did as you said in my last question( 6241) and put an aftermarket gauge on and am still getting similar readings. Sometimes less than 10 psi at idle. and it never goes over 50 psi no matter what the revs are and how cold the oil is. Shall I get a refurb kit? What else can I check whilst the sump is off? Is it an easy job as i'm no expert. Thanks mate. Answer: Those readings sound ok to me. What's the problem? |

Subject: Running Hot Question: G'day Wizard dude. I'm currently running in my engine after a full blown engine rebuild. I've probably driven around 200 miles so far and have noticed how hot and how quickly the engine is getting hot. Before the rebuild i had no hot engine problems. It was always lovely and cool even with the standard radiator. Now i have a uprated copper core rad and a seperate oil cooler, and with my low temp fan switch, the fan is nearly always on keeping the car cool (its doing a great job!!!). Is it normal for GT Turbo's to run hot when running a new engine in??? Cheers. Tambo Answer: The engine will be a bit 'tight' at first, so I'd expect it to run a touch warmer, but things should've start bedding in by now. A quick check is to see how quick the engine completely stops when you kill the ignition - If it's nigh-on instantly, then it's still tight/bedding in. Also check there's no air-locks in the cooling system. I assume the thermostat is opening correctly? |

Subject: Dini/GTT - Cup Mod Question: I've looped the rhd side of the top elbow, the lhd side of the elbow goes to the fuel regulator. The AEI unit picks up off the inlet & the actuator picks up off the T3 housing. Question, i'm left with the carb vacuum connections on either side of the carb, should these be looped together or do I need to T into the actuator? Answer: Just loop them/block them off. As you say, the actuator is being fed from the compressor housing, so no need to touch that. |

Subject: missfire/hesitation Question: hi, since adjusting the tickover mixture, the engine has become hesitant off boost and when slowly accelerating. On boost the engine is normal with no missfire. when adjusting mixture screw this appears to be working ok but the missfire is still there at whatever setting i try. pls help Answer: Take your car to a local mot station, get the operator to set the mixture screw so that it gives a 1.5% c.o output at idle, then never touch the mixture screw again! ![]() Once done, come back to us if your car is still hesitating/mifiring (must admit, it sounds like another carb problem though) |
