Subject: changing Question: thinking on changing engine what engines would be a straight swap, any recomendations. Answer: stick with the gtturbo lump, it'll be alot of hassle fitting anything else. the fact you've asked the question suggests to me you havent done much research into this, and im assuming you will 'have a go' yourself at fitting it? |

Subject: Hesitant Off Boost Question: Hi Wiz, my car is very hesitant when pottering around off-boost. The engine has just under gone a complete rebuild (new pistons & liners etc). Went for a Piper 285 cam again as I've had this cam before with no lumpiness. At first I thought it was a fuelling problem so I rebuilt my carb with a new gasket kit and still the problem remained. The car passed MOT like it and the CO level was spot on. Thinking the carb was at fault I bought another, straight swap and still the same hesitation off boost. So I'm stumped. The ignition system is all new (kv85 leads, new dizzy & arm, plugs etc). I've check the dump valve isn't leaking and all breathers are OK. Any ideas...? Answer: Yep, it's possible you've knocked the dizzy drive gear a tooth out. Set the engine to TDC, take off the dizzy cap, and see where the rotor arm is pointing to - It should be bang on number 1 contact of the cap. Try that and see what happens. |

Is direct democracy the answer to our question or are we at out own peril? Answer: i don't really care. The turbo wizard will always be around and needed in some form or another. It doesnt matter what happens at the top, as long as there is some form of club, i can still make belittling remarks and be rude to newbies.

Subject: missfire/popping when booting it Question: hi, when i floor my 5 in first gear its completly fine but when i put in 2nd and carry on flooring it, it just pops and misfires and will not go any quicker. iv been told it sounds like overboosting? do you advise leads, cap, rotor, fuel filter replacement and see what happens? it has a 'bleed valve' fitted but iv screwed it in as much as it will go and it still does it.there is a pipe missing off the actuator nearest the windscreen and the one nearest the front grill goes to the bleed valve. any help would be great! Lee Answer: take a wire off the overboost sensor on the hose from the turbo to the intercooler. see if that helps first! |

Subject: fuel problem! Question: Hello wizard.. my carb is standart and fine.. I drive my car every day i'm running 10 psi on GT28R! when i got the 120mph speed there is no fuel the egt is about 980c ! so i know that i need more fuel.. I want now to run every day 16 psi.. what do you suggest to me for the main fet and the air corrector !! is the carb will work fine on idle !! may i have overfueling problems on idle !! thanks wizard. Carlos. Answer: try a uprated fuel pump first, the standard carb has a 120 main jet and this should be fine for up to 14psi. for 16psi i would make the main jet a 130. i.e a 1.3mm hole. also change your fuel filter as well.

Subject: smokey turbo Question: hey wiz, my car is smoking badly so iv checked the turbo shaft and have found a great deal of movment side to side, iv seen rebuild kits in flea bay, im thinking about rebuilding the turbo, how reliable is this likely to be? or do you advise buying a used turbo?... im on a budget trying to get the car on the road.. thanks Answer: the rebuild kits will only work if you haven't scored or worn the shaft. if the blades are catching the edge of the compressor housing then the whole lot is out of balance. you will not really save much money by getting someone's old turbo unless ur 100% sure that its ok. trust me, ive been stung exactly the same as you're about to! ""you'r on a budget"" - turbo's aitn one thing you can skimp on!!! also ask urself the question...why did the turbo blow in the first place? - low oil pressure- old oil? lack of running in time or cooling off time? etc etc? |

Subject: brass screw probs Question: hey wiz, my turbo standard r5 turbo with 44k started spluttering then cutting out at junctions today, i took out the big brass screw at the base of the carb and cleaned it, put it bk in, adjusted the mixture and she idled fine.however after a successfull test run she started struggling to idle again, and i noticed that if the brass screw was touched(without turning)it would die again, any suggestions as to what the prob is?could it be just a replacement brass screw?! soz for essay Answer: the big brass screw has a removable jet in it. hold it up to the light and see if u hav any crap in it., you do realise that there is supposed to be a rubber gasket that seals it against the carb body? could always use PTFE tape instead on the thread ![]() maybe time to take carb apart and thoroughly clean it out?- and change fuel filter ? |
