Subject: oil cream. Question: i've recently put a head on my car off another 5 i have, the head was pressure tested, skimmed and checked for flatness. when running car without any boost everythings pretty much fine, but if any boost is used, it uses coolant and the oil has become very creamy. head was torqued down correctly and retorqued to 70nm, the reason why the head was changed is because oil was getting in to coolant, but with this head its the coolant gettin in to the oil. any advice?? thanks. Answer: sounds like you may have disturbed your liner seals. |

Subject: Oil Pressure Question: Hi Wiz, My oil pressure gauge (standard) gives me very worrying readings, most of the time it reads under 1 bar when hot and driving but then sometimes shoots up to 4 bar. When cold it usually reads 4 bar at idle, but sometimes lower. The gauge never goes right to the bottom though. Just changed oil and filter. No smoke at all from exhaust, no knocking either. How long would an engine last with only 1 bar of oil pressure as I've done 450 miles and havn't exactly taken it easy!!! Bloody hope its the gauge!! Cheers mate, Mitch. Answer: do yourself a favour, and spend £35 on an aftermarket electric oil pressure gauge. then come back to me, when you've discovered - like everyone else, who asks the same question, the one true answer. THE STANDARD OIL PRESSURE GAUGES ARE SHIT. |

Subject: Fitting a digital speedo Question: G'day Mr. Wizard. We meet again, about the same subject. A while ago i asked you how to wire up a digital speedo (the same as in the Carisma, Ali G car). I have tried asking everyone about this but nobody can (or in some cases doesn't want to) help. I haven't been able to get in touch with Carisma themselves, their email isn't working and being in Australia its pretty hard to contact them by phone. I really need to find out how to wire the speedo to the original speed sensor, or if this is not working, which sensor do i need to buy and how do i wire this one up? Please can you help as i still haven't got my GT Turbo on the Aussie roads yet and i've been here for over a year...... its driving me crazy. Cheers. Tambo Answer: Sorry bud, without knowing the speedo or schematic of it, I've got about as much chance of knowing the wiring proceedure as what I have knowing how to perform open heart surgery. It might be worth staying up late/getting up early and speaking to Carisma on the phone if you're that desperate to get the speedo wired up. |

Subject: boost and chatter Question: wizard, when im drivin my 5 hard, at about 4.5revs in 4th gear my boost seems to back off? what do you think? also in any gear at about 4000 revs i get a chattering noise. the turbo unit has only done 3000miles but im not sure where its coming from. help i dnt want to blow my engine up Answer: Could be a few things... - Lack of fuel getting to the carb, which would cause the engine to 'die' once the carb float chamber is empty - Check fuel pump efficiency, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, boost ref' pipe from carb elbow to fuel regulator, or fuel pump relay/module intermittently cutting out. - If fuelling's ok, it could be the actuator spring is weak and hence can't hold the wastegate shut/at a given opening when it's on boost. - Could be a slight air leak in your boost cct - Check boost pipes, intercooler, dump valve (if you have one) diaphragm, carb elbow is secure to carb, and the o-ring underneath the carb elbow is ok. - Someone has stuck a potato up your exhaust, a la Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop ![]() |

Subject: squeaking Question: Hi wiz, i have a bit of a prob, theres a constant squeaking noise comming from the front drivers side suspension,it seams to be at its loudest when im driven slow,eg in traffic, also i find the car vibrates a lot once i go past 70mph,any ideas what it might be? Answer: Take out the shock (2 bolts to the hub, 2 bolts to the strut top), remove the various plates etc at the top of the shock, and look for any that may be cracked. Defo not a wheel bearing squeeking away? |

Subject: No handbrake Question: Any ideas why my handbrake isnt working since i changed one of the calipers ? I thought it was just a case of linking the cable back up.Is there some way you have to adjust/ set it up ? Also with the cable disconnected and the arm where the cable would go into pushed all the way in by hand i can still turn the disc, do you think this would suggest a faulty caliper. Foot brake works fine. Cheers Answer: Could be, or as you say, you haven't taken up the cable slack via the adjuster whatsit underneath the car (follow the cable back from the handbrake itself and you'll find it). |

Subject: misfire on first start up/mayonnaise Question: hi wiz, i have recently replaced my head gasket(caused buy alt belt coming off) i changed all gaskets check head all flat. i carried out a cooling compression test i found no leaks but coolant does go down after a while my oil level is spot on just alot of creamy stuff in rocker cover i also carried out a block test all ok i have ever done a compression test all around 140psi.could it be a liner seal or rad ??no smoke out of exhaust can u help wiz Answer: Sounds v much like a liner seal, given that your compression results were ok, and that you're losing water/water is mixing with the oil. Whip off the sump, pressurise the water system via the header-tank, and see if you can spot any water dripping down from the liners. You'll know before-hand, as when you remove the sump-plug, you'll probably get water coming out before the oil does. |

Subject: anti perc fan Question: hi wizard how long should it tack 4 the anti perc fan 2 start working and if it dont what damage can it do Answer: If you've been driving hard so that you trigger the thermisitors as such (one on the turbo heatshield, one at the base of the carb) the perc fan should kick in virtually as soon as you switch off the engine, and will probably remain on for a wee while. If it doesn't work, it's not a major major problem. Just means that your car *might* be a b****** to re-start when hot. But plenty of people remove the perc fan and have no trouble. |
