Subject: broken clutch cable

Question:
My car is 17 years old and in april this year my clutch cable broke. In my local garage they fitted a non renault cable and it broke again a few days ago.
I told them to use an original cable and the problem now is they can´t select any gear. I have fitted an uprated clutch and a shortshifter gearstick.
Is the problem the cable or the clutch, or both.

Answer:
Local garage I'd say.

Get a genuine Renault cable and take your car to a competent mechanic who does know what he's doing!

Subject: carb

Question:
ive been having problems with my carb mixture. ive had the carb serviced and no matter which way the mixture screw is turned the car still runs lean,do i need to get an uprated fuel pump, or is the carb ruined, the car is running a ktr 180 hybrid thanks ryan

Answer:
Have you removed the mixture screw, just to make sure the needle point hasn't broken off it and is wedged in the mixture screw hole?

If all good there, I'd suspect you've got an air-leak lower than the venturi...assuming you're referring to the idle mixture c.o being lean, and not the on-boost fuelling being lean?

Subject: clutch cable part 2

Question:
I already have an original cable which they fitted in my car. They told me there is not much adjustment so the fitment must be ok. The problem might be more serious, perhaps clutch failure.
I have read that a clutch cable can break due to a seized clutch.

Answer:
don't forget the clutch has a self adjust mechanism on it. also, make sure that the cable is FED THROUGH THE LOOP AT THE TOP OF THE CLUTCH PEDAL CORRECTLY!!!- NOT TO THE SIDE, NOT ROUND THE BACK- IT MUST I REPEAT- MUST GO THROUGH THE CENTRE OF THE LOOP!!!
ive seen far too many cases of this happening smile
the original renault clutch cable should be fine. its the clucth ratchet mechanism that breaks alot too!!! 17yrs of plastic clicking across each other.- bound to be broken.

Subject: this 3- dont question me!

Question:
aha...why swop between high n low boost? Well wudnt it be cool to run on minimum for motorway n town aboutin'? then when u wanna cane it, thrash up to silly-o-psi? If u are unsure why, see the spider valves, they seem to cater for this kinda thing?
Seems u cant help in that respect - ive done as u said tho, set up undre bonnet bleeder, to set my max n run it to my in car.As for self control? HA! how many people resist knokin it up abit, plus i wanna know that no matter how much i turn my in car bleeder- i wont blow my car up. The actuator arm is screwed a bit tight, so std is about 11psi - so ill slacken it off then i shud go from 7-15psi max, this shud do everything i need, sweet! peace out!

yawn Splendid

Question:
Hi wiz,
I have a slow passeger window going up ,how easy is it to chage the motor,I have another 5 that i use for spares taken off the three bolts but how does the motor come out ?

MANY THANKS

Answer:
Before you go changing the motor, try greasing up the window runners first of all, and making sure you have good electrical connections at the motor.

If that doesn't make any difference, get back to us...

Subject: idling lumpy

Question:
hey wizz hows it goin answering all these questions lol.

my car sits at bout 8000 -9000 revs but idles really lumpy, any suggestions ?

cheers

Answer:
Surely you mean 800-900rpm, unless you've fitted an F1 engine?! big grin

What's the idle mixture co level? It should be around 1.5%, but yours could be leaner, hence the erratic idle.

Also worth giving the idle jet a good clear out.

No fancy hot cams in situ I take it?

Subject: actuator arm? help gandelf!

Question:
basically, i want my car to go from std boos t(8psi?) to 15psi...so....i set up my in car kit with limiter to run from std to 15psi-which it does with no probs.
However, i forgot, my turbo's std boost is 11psi (sumone musthave shortened the actuator arm before I bought it) so...im thinking, ill lengthen the actuator arm till it runs 8psi on lowest boost..so ive lengthened it..but ive just driven it, and it'll boost up to say..i dunno maybe 10? then just shoot right down...any ideas why? (im running a singleport actuator..) mate reckons putting the actuator arm as it was n doing cup mod shud sort it..but i dont reeally wanna do the cup mod....

Answer:
you will have to run the cup mod if you've got a single port actuator. no ifs or buts!!! try that first then get back to me!

Subject: idling lumpy 2

Question:
hey yea lol soz meant 800 -900 wink how do i check the co level? and wheres the idle jet situ? pretty new to all this

no hot fancy cams for me ! !

Answer:
Run ya car down to your local mot station, drop the tester some beer tokens, and ask him if he can quickly measure the co output. As per before, it should be around 1.5%

Idle jet is on the driver's side of the carb. It's a big brass screwhead, but the jet itself is joined onto that. Pull the jet off the screwhead, don't drop the little 'torpedo' inside wink then give the jet a good clean out making sure the tiny hole at the end is completely clear. Make sure the torpedo is clean, and fit everything back together. Also check that the idle jet o-ring is in good nick and isn't perished, as if it is, it'll leak air through which also cause an unstable idle.

Subject: header tank gunky crap

Question:
Theres been alot of sludge in the header tank for some time now. assumed was the head gasket, have fitted 1.9mm bbpt head gasket, head was in really good condition. never been skimmed and no scratches cracks or warped at all. been runnin engine in for a week or so before i re torque, but theres still lots of sludge being made in the header tank.theres no pressure being made in the header tank so i assume hg not gone again. is it possible for sludge to be made within the radiator? its a copper core rad.

Answer:
is there water in the oil as well?

as a rough guide....
water in oil = headgasket/liner seal
oil in water = turbo core/ radiator/ internal oilway in head

id reckon the internal oil way in the head has split!

try changing your oil for a better grade- like motorsport 10w60 or 15w50. this may help. either that or your breather system isn't working properly, or your turbo is fecked.

Don't bother. 95ron unleaded is fine for low-medium boost levels, and super should only be used at high(er) boost levels.

Subject: BOOST PRESSURES

Question:
HI WIZ I HAVE RECENTLY UPRATED MY ENGINE WITH A WHOLE LOAD OF GOODIES DONE BY IAN AT EP. I NOW HAVE A T3/28 TURBO AND MY PROBLEM IS THAT I CANT SEAM TO GET ANY MORE THAN 20 PSI OUT OF IT. I HAVE AN IN CAR ADJUSTABLE WHICH GOES FROM 16 STANDARD TO 20 WOUND OUT. NOW IAN TOLD ME IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE THE ACTUATOR WASNT STRONG ENOUGH SO I BOUGHT A FORGE RACE ACTUATOR WITH A 26 PSI SPRING. WHY CANT I GET 26 OUT OF IT? I AM TAKING THE PRESSURE REDAING AFTER THE CARB ALSO. I NO PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD LIKE 28 OUT THE SAME TURBO

Answer:
It could be a number of things, from a leak in the boost circuit, to a lack of gas drive to the turbo (read manifold leak), to that new actuator not pre-loaded properly.

Have you rang Ian and asked him about it all?

Subject: running temp?

Question:
Hello, thanks for helping with the ring gear problem, it was a dodgy new starter that chewed both my flywheels.

I have fitted a new temp gauge that reads in ^C and i need to know the running temp in numbers, mine heats up fairly quickly and sits between 80 and 90 when driving, as soon as i sit in trafic it goes up to 100 and once went to 110.
this is with the rad and perc fan running on a switch which i turn on at about 80 and the heaters blasting hot, i have a new copper rad, no stat at the mo, no water leaks, head is good and new gasket. any ideas. thanks alot

Answer:
Driving temp' sounds fine, but those traffic figures are somewhat high.

How accurate is the gauge?

Please, please will you help me out? Can you give me all the info..... needed or if there is any documents, files or whatever on this. I guess what Im really asking is; Is it a hard task and will it eat my pocket alive!!!!
Ive gotten quotes for everything needed for approximately 900 pounds sterling which doesn't sem bad at all.
Please help me out on EVERYTHING you know on this subject,
Thanks a million.
Also one more question thats really bothering me; are the GTturbo & campus the exact same shell?

An 'easy' way would be to fit the gtt head & manifolds to your block, change/uprate the fuel pump, uprate the braking system, and use a gtt aei (209).

Subject: backfire running on 3 cylinders

Question:
hi i have had my r5 for about a month now i took it out for a drive, on my way home i put my foot down, after that it started to run on 3 cylinders and its backfiring through the manifold. waht would cause this to happen. could it be a knackard valve.

Answer:
Yep, seen that before - A mate managed to bend one of his inlet valves, and caused exactly the same symptoms that you describe.

That's assuming that all is ok with the ht leads, plugs, etc.

A compression test should reveal all, or not as the case may be!
