Subject: crown wheel

Question:
hello, could you please explain how the crown wheel works in a gear box...been searching the net and can't find a simple answer to it.

cheers buddysmile

Answer:
A crown gear or contrate gear is a special form of bevel gear which has teeth at right angles to the plane of the wheel; it meshes with a straight cut spur gear or pinion on a right-angled axis to its own, or with an escapement such as found in mechanical clocks.

Simple gears suffer from backlash, which is the error in motion that occurs when gears change direction, resulting from hard to eliminate manufacturing errors. When moving forwards, the front face of the drive gear tooth pushes on the rear face of the driven gear. When the drive gear changes direction, its rear face is now pushing on the front face of the driven gear. Unless deliberately designed to eliminate it, there is slight 'slop' in any gearing where briefly neither face of the driving gear is pushing the driven gear. This means that input motion briefly causes no output motion. Assorted schemes exist to minimize or avoid problems this creates.

Subject: wont idle

Question:
Hi wizard,
I have just recently changed the piston and liners from my car. After replacing everything i started the car for the first time and it was good ticked over at about 800 r.p.m. But the next time i went to start it, it wouldn't idle properly. I will only tick over at 1500 r.p.m. with the choke 1/4 to 1/2 way out if i close the choke fully then the engine stalls. I have checked the timing with a strobascopic timing light and can see the the timing is out, but this is at 1500-2000 r.p.m as i can not get it to tick over any lower than this, so i expect the timing to be a bit more advanced. But it is about 20-25 degrees out. I have checked the compression on the cylinders and they are all ok and uniformed and also cleaned the idle jet but still it doesn't make any difference.
So i was thinking that the timing sensor might be dodgy?? what is the best way to check if it is nackerd??
Any of your ideas or wizdom will be much appriecated.
thanks

Answer:
Sounds to me more like a blocked/partially blocked idle jet on the carb (driver's side of carb, big brass screw head), or possibly an air-leak lower than the venturi.

Subject: speedo

Question:
my speedo reading is miles out i have 15'' wheels on the car but when im driving my speedo reads miles out like
60mph on road the road its reading 50mph on my speedo can u help ?

Answer:
I doubt the wheels have made a difference, unless you're running some funky size tyre? (should be 195/45-15"")

Have the dials been replaced recently? Could be that the speedo needle wasn't refitted at the correct position.

Subject: Drivers side electric window

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Something is wrong with my window, it has been making a lot of noise going up, like a high pitch squeek (getting caught) and required me to help it up, especially at the bottom and at the top. Now when at the top it tends to click like its already at the end of the worm drive !!

I have the door card off and I have been looking at previous questions on what to do ... I noticed that someone else mentioned they detached the motor to see how freely you can push it up / down ? how easy is that ?

Can I just push it up and reattach so its locked up ?

Answer:
Try this...

Subject: window

Question:
hello wizard! need some help again please my driver side window stoped workin i have checked the wires on the motor and on the switch still does not work?

Answer:
Probably just the runners have dried up, the motor is on its last legs, or the connection to the motor itself is shady.

Apply some grease to the runners, and clean & remake the connections at the window motor.

Subject: clutch?

Question:
hi wiz.had my car set up on rolling road yesterday and had it set to 16psi on low and 22psi on high boost via bleed valve.on 16 it was fine on normal road but on high boost the revs and turbo boost shot up but car doesnt go like ud expect felt like clutch was slipping but the clutch is fairly new and a group n so quite strong, but when i was on rolling road the tuner said it wasnt slipping so any ideas? quite happy too car showed off the bhp clock on rolling road at 230 bhp at the wheels so should be plus that because guage only went to 230 making me think can the clutch handle this power thanks for your time paul

Answer:
if the car is making 230bhp at the wheels then you will need a paddle clutch. i maybe wrong but im sure the rolling road doesn't put quite as much strain on the clutch as the actual road. hence why you may feel slippage off the rollers.

Subject: this

Question:
hi,right, firstly - let me state my spec. I am currectly running a single port actuator off my turbo - with a bleed valve inserted- connected to an in car valve. This allows me to go from 10/11 to 14/15psi max, which is lovely - coz den I dont blow my car up innit. . But I would love to go from a minimum of say....zero psi? to 15? Now, i am aware I can make a 'makeshift' spider valve from two bleed valves...however you need a two ported actuator, as I need two lines, do u not?
Is there any way I could get round this problem of the single-portedness...or do I (and can I) fit a spider valve into the actuator - carb line....HELP, OH DOCTORWIZARDMASTER type guy!

Answer:
if you take the bleed valves out of the line completely and then run a single 3-4mm ID pipe from the carb top to the actuator port, what boost does it run? i think it will be difficult to run 0psi as the spring in the actuator will dictate otherwise.
give me my answer and ill have a think about it wink

ID: 6156 | Date: Archive | Member: Archive | Wizard: Archive
Subject: this 2- ur answer o wizard!

Question:
the carb top? erm.... the line fromthe carb nearest the bulkhead is blocked off...is this what ur reffering to? oh and 0psi is silly i know, but as low as i can really...

Answer:
ok, firstly the carb as standard is set to fuel for 7psi.... so this really should be the min you should aim for.
the other problem is that you seem to lack self control. by this i mean, it would be alot easier to set up 1 bleed valve in the car and just not turn it open as much.... self control is needed.
either that or just set an under bonnet bleed valve to the max you wanna run and just dont mess with it. who is making you run full boost everywhere anyway? why bother swapping between high and low boost? do you see where im heading with this?
