Subject: Air fuel ratio meter Question: Hi Wizz, I want to install a AFR to my 5, but I am unsure which one to go for! All I want is an early warning device as so I do not melt pistons, I don't need one of those all signing all dancing ones as I will be having a rolling road session to set the car up. Have you any experience with these? if so who's would you recommend? Thanks in advance. Answer: if you have the car set up on a rolling road, why the hell would you need an AFR gauge? - i thought the whole point of getting it set up, was, to, erm get it set up ![]() the r5 gtt comes with a device to save the engine, its called the knock sensor, and its screwed to the front of the head, it retards the ignition 6° when it detects knock. i may sound harsh, but you see what im getting at. |

Subject: wheel fitment! Question: hi wiz, I have got some BBS wheels for a mk1 mk2 golf! however when I come to fit them to the 5, the inner hole is too small! so ive machined them out but now the caliper (hi spec 4 pots+ 280 disks) rubs, sooooow I put some spacers on and now the wheel does not sit on the hub and the only thing holding on the wheels is the bolts!!!! so is this dangerous? and is the hub a major factor in taking load, or just to align the wheel. ps smaller spacers are no good! cheers mate. Adam Answer: maybe you should machine the inside of the wheel alittle too, so the calipers dont rub.... |

Subject: liners moved! Question: hello, my head gasket went quite a while ago now, about 8 months ago!, and i'm now starting to sort it out,the car hasn't moved at all for about 6 months and i was told to spray some wd40 onto the pistons and then turn the engine over.when i did this the two centre pistons came up but the problem is the liners came with them. this can't be good??will i need to replace the pistons and liners??is there anything else to consider i.e rusty crank etc and will i need to go for a full bottom end rebuild?sorry about the novel, help will be very much appreciated, thanks, Ben Answer: just clean up what you can, check the big ends and mains when you take the sump off. if the crank is scored, then you will need to get the crank reground. lifting the liners automatically mean you will need new liner seals.... |

Subject: ticking noise from cluch/flywheel Question: ive just recently got my raider back on the road after my accident, while it was all in bits i have more or less replaced everything! now, ive driven the car around 60 miles and its developed a ticking noise from the cluch/flywheel area that goes away when i press the cluch pedal in, its a new volvo 480 turbo cluch and a second hand gearbox, as far as i am aware everything went in the right way round. i have no problem in selecting gears or driveing even with the ticking noise. ive taken the flywheel cover plate off to see if any stray nuts or bolts made there way in there but everything seems fine? any ideas on what it could be? Answer: check the timing sensor aint touching the flywheel, then check the clutch release bearing. it could be that. then check that the bearing sits of the metal tube that dont move!!! - as this can break off, and it sits on the gearbox input shaft. then suspect the gearbox. |

Subject: top mounts and cups Question: hi wiz, when i stripped my front suspension components down i noticed one top cup was smaller than the other.( The parts that go above the top mounts)( small one was zinc, large one was black) Why is this? Ive asked a few people and they didnt know about the size difference. IS this correct? All i can assume is one could be either off a phase 1 or a campus. Which one's would have come on my car origionally and do u have the part no. Why is one top mount and cup black and the other zinc phosphate plated. Ive been told they all left the factory like this? So i thought the larger cup would be better less likely to slip out and sourced another got them powder coated and ordered new rubber washers for them pt no. 6001 007 194 treid fitting them and found out there for the smaller cups. help? please! Answer: i know one side is black the other is nickel plated. dunno why, just thats the way they are- maybe different factories making them! as for the cup size, i never heard of this one before.- remember the gt turbo ph 2 top mounts dont fit anything else as far as i know. campus ones ae the same as the ph1.... |

Subject: Water Injection Question: Hi, Im thinking of putting a water injection system on the T2, at the mo im running 0.8 bar on a newly rebuilt engine, this will be going upto 1bar? is there any benifit with the water inj at this boost. Was thinking of the Power Developments kit?(Cheaper and a higher output pump) iv heard of a few probs with the Aquamist pumps? Any probs wit fitting a kit on a T2? Cheers Steve Answer: well....at 1 bar i wouldn't bother with water injection. i bought one off ebay a while ago from www.aquastealth.com and im sure it cost £160. took 4 days to arrive from USA. i know the T2's intercooler aint the best, and that a chargecooler would be loads better!!! i'm also assuming you're keeping the k jetronic on it for the time being.... btw, welcome to the club...well, within the club if you see what i mean

Subject: AFR & BOV Question: What would be a ideal AFR on a T2 running at 1BAR on full boost? Is there any real benifit using a BOV (Dump Valve) of is it all for show/noise really? Cheers Steve Answer: if you are running the original set up on the T2, then you will not be able to run a BOV, as the throttle plate is before the turbo. im not sure what afr is ideally, im assuming 12.5:1 for power.... i know mine is a little lean at 1 bar
