Question:
who can i speak to about a limited slip diff
as a open diff is no good for wanting to run 12s any help appreciated

Answer:
you can run 12's without a LSD. you may need to speak to gripper in coventry, or quaife, or Dr Russell Thorpe from blackpool area, cos he knows alot about these sorts of things. say the wizard sent you.

Subject: mileometer

Question:
hi i have a 1986 phase 1 the speedo works but the mileage doesnt change. have you any ideas. i have tried another set of clocks.
cheers
Rog

Answer:
i think one of the pins isn't connecting at the back of the speedo head. my old ph 1 had the same problem... so i set the insurance limited mileage to less than 2000mile per year and every renewal i had to 'reverse clock'- add miles onto the clocks, so it looked like id been somewhere!

Subject: Dump valve and turbo

Question:
Hey, i bought my 1st 5 turbo and took it to my area rep, when he'd taken me out in his car the turbo and dumpvalve all seemed to be alot louder, even when driving normally the dumpvalve was alot louder, my car has gttuning he5b li comp 360 degree rollerbairing turbo and a forge dump valve, the turbo is only running about 7-8 psi, it takes forever to spool up, is the dump valve quiet because its running low boost? and should the turbo take so long to reach full boost?
Thanks
Tony

Answer:
run (14psi) - 1 bar and you will see the difference in loudness. also a good idea to make the vac tubing as small as possible- 2-3mm internal diameter. this also makes the D/V louder.
when does the car hit full boost?- at what revs?

Subject: boost

Question:
Afternoon, any ideas why my boost has increased on its own. I had it set at 10p.s.i by my under bonnet bleed valve and today i noticed my aftermarket gauge is reading just less than 1 bar. Pretty sure its not a faulty gauge as my standard one looks about the same. My exaust manifold has just started leaking, could this have somethind to do with it ? Thanks

Answer:
no, you probably have a leak in the pipe to the wastegate actuator.

Subject: Dump valve and turbo

Question:
Hey thanks for your reply,
The turbo doesnt seem to hit full boost forever maybe 4000 plus?, but ive found that the diaphram on my D/V is split, i'll replace that then let you know more, also a little reluctant to raise the boost to 14psi, would this be ok for regular use? engine runs fine but i don't know what condition internals are in really?
Regards
Tony

Answer:
14psi will be fine, standard internals are ok for erm...well whatever boost you throw at it really. its the fuelling and oil pressure you really do need to keep an eye on.

Subject: manifold gasket

Question:
alrite wiz, you say the tappin an squeelin is caused by my inlet manifold gasket, and a said the noises went away once warmed up will this be caused by heating up and expanding and closing any gaps?
also wiz even though the noises go away will this still be effecting my performance? cheers

Answer:
yes, heating up expands things, hence the noise goes away. and depending where the leak is it may be effecting performance.

Subject: starting

Question:
Im having problems trying to start a car i have recently bought. i thought that it might be the alarm but i have checked this and it seems to be ok. what i am finding is the engine will turn over but will not fire. after a short time the enevitable happens and that lovelly smell of petrol comes through. every time i touch the gas pedal the starter motor kicks back as if it doesnt want to turn any more. could this be a starter motor problem or possibly a ecu fault. there was no spark when i put a plug in on lead one and turned the engine over.

Answer:
check your timing is ok, as per haynes manual. then check that the timing sensor is operational. then check the ign coil is actually working. need abit more info on this one frown

Subject: turbo

Question:
hi wizard will a t28 turbo of a cosworth go straight on my r5 turbo

cheers

Answer:
you need to find out what A/R the exhaust housing is.
word of advice though - you do not save money by skimping on turbos.
by skimping i mean, buying 2nd hand ones that have only done 100miles, cos it takes less than 10secs of oil starvation or particles to totally feck the thing.
finding them in the scrap yard is also a sure way to waste your money.
buying them off ebay is also a favourite total waste of time.

Subject: Stuck oil filter

Question:
Hi Great Wizzard,

How the devil are you sir?

I have attempted to change the oil filter on my beloved 5 and it is not going to plan, it appears that the guy who did the filter last at the garage has used excessive force to put the filter on.
Anyway my efforts so far have included punching a hole in the top of the filter with a big screw driver to try and unscrew it from the block (unsucessfully) and i have also taken the bonnet off and the grille off as well in this crazy attempt.
I have used a strap tool to try and undo the filter which has proved pretty useless. Should i try to remove the alternator as well to give me more space?

do you have any other suggestions oh wise one?

Many thanks,

Ian

Answer:
there is a three legged filter removal tool

Subject: Idle Knocking, Diesel sound, Over tightened tappet?

Question:
Hi,

My engine was rebuilt by BBPT about 6k miles ago. The shells, bearings etc were replaced, but the crank, pistons and liners are orignal.

Only idle (hot and cold), you can hear a tap/knock coming from the bottom end - This is not tappet noise, I can hear the difference, you can hear the tappets just about when drivin,g but not this.

Its very audible when standing next too the car though.

Its not as regular as tappets sound, seems too occur every 4 or 8 taps, cant tell exacty...

I've removed each HT lead in turn with the engine running, the noise did not stop in any case, so im beginning too suspect crankshaft/bearing problems...?

I check my tappets regularly, last time I set them too 0.15 and 0.2, which I believe too be a tiny bit tighter than recommened but like anyone I like them quiet big grin

I'm worried I may have overtightened one and this is causing the noise. Could this be the case? I know then when finished setting them I nipped up all the locknuts which sometimes turns the screw a tiny bit more....?

By the way - Oil pressure is good, filter and oil regularily changed - Use 15w15 Mobil 1.

Car drives etc fine. I am wondering if it is worth me removing the sump and just checking none of those bearing caps are loose? (I think that is what they are called...the 8 larger nuts you can see when you remove the sump big grin)

Cheers in advance

PS - Am not flapping, no panic, just that I can hear this noise slowly getting worse....

Answer:
you may need to take the sump off and have a look at the bearings. check for scoring on the big ends and the mains.

its the pressure sensor. i always advise getting an aftermarket gauge, which involves changing that sensor and making your own simple (one wire) loom up.

Subject: my love life

Question:
wizard i need help

my g/f is being really off at the moment, should i stick with it as she will probably pick up or should i get over it and move on!

the L word matters in this situation lol

Answer:
when you are with her, do you feel all warm and cozy? do you like spending time with her, when she aint off with you?
if so then it would be in your best interests to send her to me, to show her what a real man can do....

either that or you can sit her down, and gently ask her whether anything is wrong, and is there anything you can do. thats when she tells you she dont think it can go on anymore, or that she's been seeing Mr 12 incher, and you dont compare. if she don't wanna talk, feck her off, can you really be bothered with a woman who doesn't like to tell you important stuff.... thought that was a man's main problem wink

Answer:
i wouldn't bother.
it would be worth it if you managed to get the manifold matched to the head, but you would have to take the head off with the manifolds and then give it to an experienced engine builder. who would then take a large amoumt of money off you.
