Subject: Juddering Brakes

Question:
Hi,

My car judders quite severly when braking, felt mainly through the pedal but the whole car also vibrates.

My wheels where very out of balance for some time (leading me to believe I had driveshaft problems, HOWEVER, the balancing place I took the wheels too had used single-piece weights that hit the calipers and probably fell of as soon as I drove it out of their garage, the wheels are now, finally balanced with decent 2-peice weights on the outside of the rims - bah!)

Anyway, from a quick inspection of each brake disc - None are visably cracked, and I cant see any warping, although with A couple I cant be sure.

Am I correct in saying that the only causes of juddering brakes can be discs, or loose calipers?

Cheers

Answer:
you need to remove the disc and clean and lightly grease the mating face of the hub. ther could be corrosion causing the disc not to sit flat and hence wobble! you can check this first by jacking the car up,take the wheel off, starting the car, put it into first, and see if the disc wobbles around.
as long as one wheel is off the ground it won't roll forward!!

Subject: t3 cup mod

Question:
hey wiz, i put my car in to get a new turbo fitted, it has the t3 actuator, also got a spider valve fitted in conjunction with in car boost control, should i be running the cup mod to make the most out of this?as far as i can tell the pipework is still the same as before.

cheers dude

Answer:
the t3 actuator will more than likely only have 1 port out of it, in which case you may well be running a mdified version of the cup mod anyway.

Subject: idle oil pressure FINE,but when boosting drops!!

Question:
hi wizard, new member today, with a few r5 problems i hope you can advise me on please.
problem with oil pressure!! at idle standard in dash gauge reads3-5 bar pressure, but if i rev up at stand still the pressure drops to zero. car does not smoke at all,am not losing any oil,has recon head, new valves, seats, skimmed etc, uprated gasket and bolts.new turbo fitted as suspected my others but problem still the same.the car is still fecking quick but im wasteing insurance and mot cos im too scared to drive it just in case i feck it.im wondering if its possible the turbo is putting to much boost in the crankcase system??but it does have a restrictor in line in the t piece which should limit it.i have no one way valve which the all informative {bollox} hayns manual says i should have in line??ive treated the car with plenty of tlc and will do what it takes to sort it.its just ive run out of ideas and doing everyones head in asking for things to try to fix prob.i have just bought an aftermarket oil pressure gauge to find true reading, but i have changed sender unit to eliminate that.i really am stuck.when boosting up into higher revs it backfired too and lurched.i dont know if thats connected to the prob??or maybe a sticking valve as head has only done 200 miles.car is static till problem is solved, any ideas for me to try and advice would be much appreciated.thanks for your time, ben 07971 399933 SOUTHEND ON SEA

Answer:
your oil pump could be dodgy. if you have 3-5 bar pressure on an AFTERMARKET gauge. that then reads zero when you rev it, you are obviously losing oil pressure somewhere. im wondering if the oil pump may have a dodgy pressure release valve, or that the rotor is shagged. eitherway, you need to make sure it not an electrical fault with you electrical pressure gauge first...

Subject: air box at idle used to have suction...now no more??

Question:
hi wiz,
also,as well as my low oil ressure when boosting,my air box which used to induct on idle has gone quiet??it does suck when i rev up the engine though but hasnt got that beefy sound at start up.i have uprated a few parts but wondered if this is directly related to loss in pressure my gauge shows?? where has my vacuum at idle gone!!?? thanks, ben

Answer:
check to see that you turbo hasnt seized. grab the inlet spindle and moveit left and right, up and down, and in and out! see if it spind freely also. the turbo could be shaged which could mean oil pressure dropping, and also no suction from it. a knackered turbo could be due to a dodgy oil pump, bits in oil, or overly thin oil... what are you using?

Subject: brake pipes

Question:
hi wiz my brake pipes from the master cylinder all the way to the back are rotten do you know of any1 that sells them or do i have to buy a kit and make them myself cheers

Answer:
most places sell you a length and you have to bend it yourself. even if you could buy it preformed, you would have to straighten it out again to get it to fit!

Subject: The speedo odometer

Question:
My speedo odometer has stopped working but speedo is ok. Is the odometer working off the same wiring loom as the speedo? and could it be that loom that is at fault. I have checked the connection at the back of the instraments and this seems OK. What do you think?

Answer:
They work off the same connection as such, so it sounds like an internal clock failure of some sort.

See if you can borrow a complete set of clocks just to eliminate/confirm that is the case first though...

Subject: Manifold gasket?

Question:
Hi wiz,
just a quick question, which way does the mainfold gasket go- im guessing that the metal face goes agaist the head
Thanks in advance

Answer:
In all honesty, it really doesn't make a difference - Some people fit them metal side to head, others fit metal side to manifold.

I've tried both ways and it made no difference at all, even from a durability point of view.

Subject: k-tec manifold

Question:
is it worth it?

what gains am i gona get from it over a standard manifold?

and what loss may i have?

Answer:
The 64,000 dollar question! big grin

No-one has a definitive answer I'm afraid, but feel free to search the boards for many a varied discussion on tubular manifolds and come to your own conclusion.

You could buy one and carry out a back-to-back rolling road session with a standard manifold in place, then a tubular one fitted, and note any differences that way.

Here's some food for thought though - With the exception of Andy Cooke, the majority, if not all, of the sub 13 second times @ Pod have been set with a non-tubular manifold in place, and with Stuart Clark's car crossing the line at 125mph, I'd say the standard manifold isn't all that bad wink

Subject: liners

Question:
my head gaskets gone i took head off, and i notice the liners have play in block. when i put head back on does it clamp liners in place cheers

Answer:
yes, it does clamp the liners, but if you have lifted or wobbled the liners too much you can damage the little rubber seals at the base of them. the only way to change them is to take the sump off and take the pistons and liners out!!!

Subject: lowering

Question:
do you no of anyone who make springs for a renault 5 campus prima 1996 or can i fit gt turbo springs thanks

Answer:
how low do you want to go? phase 1 gt turbo would be closer to your car than a ph2 gtt. but ph2 gtt spring would fit, but 30mm drop springs for a gtt would be ALOT more on your car!!!

hey wizmyster

been looking at a few things,

firstly polished aluminium oil fume swirl pot thing....£70

sfs silicone breather hose...£90

i also run a brether filter on the swirl pot not back into air filter

ok, so thats first choice

second choice being a k-tec oil breather catch tank./..£130

so overall its cheaper...but what would i gain from it if anything?

Answer:
you wouldn't gain anything. what boost are you running?- cos over 20psi the bottom end does get presurised quite alot....

Subject: and another one.

Question:
wiz, there is a limit to what everyone can take....but im gona ask yuo another question.lol

ryt, apparantly....when i went to get my crank re-ground, the guy said that there is aharened surface on the top, and therfreo re-grinding the crank will mean the crank will beeasier to score and scratch...

is this true,

if so would it be a gud idea to get a gud crank and simply have it polished?

Answer:
the surface of the crank is hardened, but its down to a certain depth, which i cannot remember.
why would the crank be getting scored anyway?- unless you'd got loads of crap in your engine? ???

bite the pillow, and get it reground.

Subject: actuator

Question:
hi again just another question for u.my car used to run at 12psi and then one day it droped to 10,i thought my turbo was on the way out but recently a friend who worked for renault sport for years took it to have a look and he said my actuator was leaking via bottom port,so i have done the cup mod to do away with the bottom port and it still is running at 10psi just wondered if you have ever heard of actuators leaking and make boost loss thanks?

Answer:
there is a diaphragm in the actuator, and this could have split. but before you change it, check to see you aint popped yer intercooler or split a boost hose!

hi

might be a very stupid question but should a r5 gtt have those little caps which sit on top of the valves

thanks alot for your help again

yes, protects water from getting into the valve, which then in cold weather, freezes, expands and lets the air out of your tyres!!
i wonder how i know this rolls eyes
