Subject: Engine Tuning! Question: Hello,Im gonna be runing a Gordini turbo rally car this year in tarmac events,Could you please advise me on getting good low down grunt,Less lag,As top end speed is not that important,Would you advise on moving the carb closer to the engine?Fitting an intercooler?Fitting a dump valve,What is a really quick anti lag turbo/set up? Cheers. Answer: You could ditch the gordini carb and fit a gtt one on a custom manifold bolted to the head, as that then opens up the possibility of running an intercooler or charge-cooler more safely. For good low down grunt, don't go massively big on the turbo, and perhaps have a look at altering the ratios in the gearbox. Forget anti-lag, unless you plan on going efi. |

Subject: Don`t run off !!! Question: Hi Man, Just want a straight answer here ....from YOUR point of view only, utilising your vast knowledge and experience, would YOU fit a dump valve or not ?? Never mind the technical bumf. Read all the debates ... still confused. But all i will say is ...i hate the sound of mine !! Ta ever so, Pete. Answer: ok, firstly you have to ask yerelf one question, do you drive the car for the performance or for the noise/looks you get? if its performance then ditch it. if its looks and noise then make all your vac tubing 4mm ID or smaller and get a BOV or forge grp A. sorted! pppppsssschttt!!! i like dump valves....but im a rebel

Subject: oil level rise Question: hi wizard, the misfire is only a small problem now as after taking my r5 out for a test yesterday i now have a bigger problem as today i checked the oil level it has risen way past the top line and there is mayo in the oil cap!it still run ok,i have done a compression check and that seems ok averaging from 130 to 160.i have not changed or moved the liners or anything like that,do you think that is what is playing up now?thanks Answer: a blown head gasket can cause water to go into the sump, hence why the oil level has risen! |

Subject: Wobbling at speed Question: Hi, My 5 wobbles quite badly, distincly over 75/80mph. All other speeds are fine. I have tried two sets of wheels, and swapping the rears with the fronts, no change, I do not think this is down to wheel balanceing (although it has been in the past, with different wheels). Its definatly coming from the front, I think offside. Ive had a nose about quite a bit, to my suprise, both track rod ends seem fine, and wheel bearings also - Cant really get any play out of either. Unsure about lower balljoints..its hard to tell! I've now finished collecting all suspension components are another rebuild, so hopefully this wil solve the problem. I am however leaving out replacing the steering rack due to money shortage, could this be the problem? I will replace both bearings as a matter of course when I do the rest. Also - Im a tad worried (from reading the forums) this could be a driveshaft problem? Ive not replaced them before, and cant fork out on them either! The problem isnt 'load' related, purely speed related as far as I can tell. Do you think one of my wheel bearings is subtly nackered? Cheers ![]() Answer: a wheel bearing wouldnt cause wobbling, it would cause a whirring noise! a knackered top mount would cause wobble, as would a dodgy wishbone bush and driveshaft. don't worry about the driveshafts they are faily easy to replace- its the wishbone bushes you'll have to worry about!!! *lol* not exactly what you wanted to hear ?

Subject: Wobbling at speed Part II Question: ![]() Cheers for previous answer. Actually i'd much rather change the wishbones than the driveshaft...purly becuase the driveshaft is somthing i've not done before...and...we...fear...change... With the car on the ground, there is a SMALL amount (mm's...) of side-side play in the offside driveshaft...with zero play in/out of the gearbox...the hub nut is done up tight. The wishbones bushes look fine, just old and worn like any do, im got some new wishbones with bushes and balljoints to go on anyway. How can I proveto myself the driveshaft has problems before I spend the money - I'd like to get the rebuild etc done in a weekend, which I cant do unless my local factor man gets the dshaft the day before, then I can give him the exchange back afterwards... ![]() By the way - There is no leakage of g/box oil and the rubber seems immaculate. ![]() Answer: driveshafts are easier than wishbones.... |

Subject: light sounder and seal Question: is there meant to be a buzzer that sounds to remind you av left lights on and doors open on the r5? because there isnt one on mine and i went in my mates r5 and his had one just wondering if there standard and mine has just broken.also is it possible to buy new front window screen seals for the r5 has mine is leaking thanks again paul Answer: earlier cars didnt have them fitted. see if the wiring is there for yours by borrowing your mates buzzer and plugging it into your relay board. then see if it makes a noise.the front window is sealed in with window sealer (sikaflex) and may need resealing with that. what makes you think its leaking?- are you sure its not the heater matrix? |

Subject: driveshaft probs? Question: hi wizard, i have a clio gtt and i think the drive shafts are on the way out? the left side clunks on full lock at low speed and at high speed vibrates the car? i have checked the bearings for movement and am preety sure its not them, i asume that my gearbox is a 5gt coz the speedo aint wired up to the dash and have been told that 5gt are all electronic, so for me to change the shafts do i buy 5gt shafts and change the hub end c.v to fit or is it a straight fit in? (by the way the base car is a j plate 16v) or vica versa if its a 16v gearbox? any info would be a big help?(like how to now which box is which) ta Answer: check the gearbox number over the top of the diff. on a small metal plate. the clio shafts will fit into the gt turbo box, but you will have to check the length of it against the new one, as basically all renault shafts have the same ends and spline patterns, just the lengths are different. no need to feck with the cv either. just change the shaft. |

Subject: water loss3 Question: no, how do u pressurise the system. do u mean bleeding it cheers Answer: Pressurise it, as in remove the header-tank cap, grab a foot-pump or similar (with a pressure gauge attached), and pump it to circa 1 bar, then see if it starts to drop pressure. If it doesn't, there aren't leaks and all is good with the cooling system. If it does, you should now be able to see where it's leaking from, unless it's an internal leak ![]() Halfords do said pressure-testing kit, if you're having trouble creating an air-tight seal with a foot-pump nozzle stuck in the header-tank. |

Answer: T25 will be ok, but it's clutching at straws time as I don't know the exact spec of the housings, wheel sizes, etc. Chances are you won't need another actuator, unless that one is knackered. |

Subject: oil cooler Question: hello, im wanting to fit an oil cooler. before fitting do i need to drain out the oil to stop it spilling out of the oil filter and snadwich plate? also does the sandwich plate just screw off like the filter? cheers Answer: You don't need to drain the oil, but you might find there's a residual amount left in the filter anyway. Sandwich plate is held on by a hollow fixing stud - You'll see what I mean. |

Subject: how much boost Question: how much boost can i run with fmic,fm oil cooler, air filter, dump valve, copper rad, paddle clutch, uprated jets and standard pistons and liners cheers dave. Answer: Define uprated jets (I assume you're on about carb jets), as this is the governing factor to how much boost you can run. |

Subject: decisions Question: ryt wiz, got a bit of a dilema, and i know your the man of many answers....and excellent guidance through these dark days of renault 5'ing. basically, my engine needs a re-build, no big prob, but iv bought a fair few gudies, which include, low comp piston, piper 285(bb 270) vernier pulley, and basically all the usual parts aswell, aswell as the old parts such as full 2.5"" exhaust charge cooler, oil cooler etc etc now, with the ryt turbo, what sort of 'reliable' fast raod figure could i get from this engine? and at roughly what boost. that would last and also be able to go for long periods of time, i.e stages etc or track days the other thing is, if reliable BIG POWER isnt relay achievable would it be worthwhile stepping up to the f16 turbo'd engine with lost of gudies? cheers wizzy wiz Answer: well scott my old parts-monger..... you've caught me on a helpful day! ![]() id stick my neck out and say that at 18-20psi a figure of 180-200bhp would be a reliable fast road figure, as nothing really is gonna be under huge strain. problem is with big power is that it becomes uncontrollable. why is it that most new FWD cars that have over 230bhp have either weird diffs or they are quite heavy?- to cope with putting the power down. a turbo's clio lump is a nice idea, but how popular is it?- and how reliable is converting a NA engine to run a turbo? just questions that keep popping up in my mind..... you know how it is.

Subject: running in!!! Question: hi wiz!!!how many miles should i run my 5 in for after a full engine rebuild inc:reground crank new shells, new pistons and liners new oil seals? Answer: I would say if you want it to break it i gently give it around the 1000 mile mark at low boost.(painfull I know, but less painfull than another rebuild!) The main aim is to keep it around the 3000rpm mark for say 500 miles, then for each 100 miles over take it up by 1000rpm. This should give you a steady running in of all the major components. Once you've done this, change the oil and filter and get the mixture checked before you go off at warp speed into the sunset coz you don't want to be running lean and ruining all your hard work... |

Subject: air filters Question: hi wat is the best air filter you could recomend for performance i just cant make my mind up there is so many on the market thanks alot Answer: If it's in the o.e air-box, K&N. If it's a bolt-on filter, the choice is endless and probably doesn't make that much difference in all honesty. |

Subject: boost guage & controller Question: hi wiz, i am fitting a boost guage & boost controller but am confused as to which pipes they need plumbing into!? ie, the vacuum hose for the boost guage and hoses from the actuator & turbo inlet for the controller?........please help...... Answer: Boost gauge (and possibly the controller if it's an electronic unit and requires a map reading for reference) should be T'd into the vacuum line running from the base of the carb/manifold throat to the aei capsule. One hose should go from the carb elbow, 'cup mod' port on the carb, or compressor housing nozzle (if you have one) to the inlet/feed in of your boost controller, then another pipe from the actuator (front port if 2 ports are present) to the outlet/feed out of the controller. |

Subject: Dash wiring Question: hi wiz , just wondered if you could tell me where abouts the wiring for the dasboard enters the car . it keeps poping the fuse for the dash and when i put a bigger fuse in it started smoking from the screen heater vents could you cast any light on the subject ?? thanks alot Carl Answer: erm, in a word no!- i left this question for ages to answer in hope that some other wizard would answer it, but i know for a fact we are all pretty ropey on the old electronics side of things. usual responses are check earths, but in this case we know that the +ve is touching summat it shouldn't. you may have to take the dash off to investigate!!! |

Subject: bump stops Question: hi wiz i was under the car the other day and i noticed there was oil comming from the supenision I THINK when i added springs to the car so was it cause i didnt shorten the stops?it says to shorten by 20mm on the silp i was given so will it still be ok if i can shorten them i had them added on tuesday so will the suspension set nw and be ok?or shall i leave it?and will it be major if i dont do it and will it stop leaking.oh how small is the flick switch for the reverse plug i cant seem to find it thans mate oh the french!!the torsions are some what tricky to do id say but looks better now Answer: i doubt that shortening the bump stops will stop the shox from leaking. sounds more like the seals have gone to me. the reverse light is controlled by a switch in the side of the gearbox, next to where the drivers side driveshaft enters the box. |

Subject: cylinderhead!!!! Question: i recently bought a cylinder head off ebay and the guy who sold it said it was ported and polished, with enlarged valves!! trouble is i think ive bin conned cos the ports look the same size as my old standard 1only its a bit smoother!! is there any way of measuring the port? and what it the maximum ammount you can skim off a head and where do u measure it from? nice 1 wiz Answer: measure the whole thickness of the head- its called the deck height. should be around 73mm, anything below 72.5mm may cause problems. the port can be measured using a vernier caliper to see if its been enlarged much. i bet it hasn't. |
