Subject: tick over

Question:
hi m8 im aving alot of trouble with my carb i think .

I ve set up the tick over and it runs ok.
I take the car out 4 a drive and the tick over keeps moving , every time i stop car cuts out but starts again 1st time no probs. ive borrowed a m8`s carb and that runs ok just huntin alittle.

I av checked 4 air leaks and can`t find any.

Av u got any surgestions as im gettin rather frustrated now.

Thanks.

Michelle & john

Answer:
How's the idle mixture c.o? It should be circa 1.5% (your local mot station will be able to check that for you).

If you're sure there's no air leaks, make sure the idle jet (large brass screw, drivers side of the carb) is nice n' clean.

Subject: RATTLING BOLT!

Question:
the bolt at the top rear shocker has worn a bigger hole in the chassis and is rattling around, how do i fix this?????
thanks.

Answer:
Bigger bolt, or plate & weld then re-drill a new hole, but bearing in mind that's a main structual point, that's gonna require some meaty plating and decent welding.

Subject: Air Filter Preference

Question:
Wiz,

Which is the best type of air filter for the 5. If it was the choice between K+N cold ir induction kit or cone filter and adequate shielding from the turbo, which would you choose?

Hezza.

Answer:
Upto 200bhp - K&N in the oe air-box.
Over 200bhp - Bolt-on induction filter, but shielded away from any heat sources.

Subject: i wonder

Question:
im interested to no if you could fit a volvo 1.7 turbo engine in a renault 19 16v

Answer:
It's possible, but not sure how the engine mounts would line up, but nothing that couldn't be sorted with a bit of fabrication here & there.

Alternatively, why not turbo the 16v engine? More power potential for starters.

Subject: Radiator Fan

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Ok, just sorted my cooling system out (i think!)

But now my fan will not switch on. I've got a manual switch, tried bridging connections at fan switch on radiator, tried a replacement fan (which also does not work). What other part of the circuit could be wrong? the wiring seem to be in good condition

cheers

ste

Answer:
Check the rad' fan relay, normally located in front of the alternator/behind the front cross-member.

Subject: Is my clutch on its way out?

Question:
Hey Wiz

Just wondering if my clutch is on its way out or if my dump valve is sticking?
First n second and fifth seem to be cool but more often than not if i accelerate hard in third or fouth, just at the beggining of the gear the revs seem to go up ( not right round the clock but they do rise about 1/5 of the clock without the car seeming to go any faster ) then they settle and the car carrys on going, it seems to do it more when its cold, and not sure how relavent this is but the car squeeks when i first start it, i thought it was the fan belt or something but ive found it goes away when i put the clutch down and then comes back again when i lift it up, and then goes away after i do this about ten times? odd!

Thanx Jay

Answer:
Yep, sounds like the clutch plate is on its last legs, or that you've got a fluid of some sort leaking onto the plate/flywheel (through the tdc sensor hole) and causing slippage that way.

If no fluids are present, suspect the clutch.

Subject: ??

Question:
alright wiz i sorted my breather pipes thanks for your help on that, my prob tday is could i of blown my turbo and head gasket at the same time ? a commpression check and lots of mayo on the oil filler cap is obvious ive blown the gasket AGAIN my mate says the turbo has gone aswell because the boost gauge stays on 0psi and my twin dumpers dont dump when i rev at a stand still could i have blown them both at the same or is this unlikely ? also when pour coolant in it just goes empty straight away my gasket has gone hasnt it cheers mate

Answer:
Hmm, not good on several counts...

The oil & water could've mixed sufficiently enough to coat the turbo bearings with water, in that they've now started to rust, hence a fooked blower, or it could be that you've lost sufficient compression, and thus gas drive to the blower, hence it won't spin that way.

Either way, sounds like you've blown the headgasket (or cracked a liner), so the last thing I'd be doing is rev'ing your engine, trying to get the boost gauge to read positive, otherwise that nice mayo mix of oil & water will be making its way into every nook & cranny around your engine!

When you've rectified the problem, make sure you fully flush the engine oil/water out, and likewise for the turbo, then ask yourself why did the gasket/liner fail again before booting the car around.

Answer:
It will, but you *might* have to re-drill the radiator mounting holes.

Subject: Fitting A Digital Speedo

Question:
G'day there, i'm really hoping you can help as you are probably my last chance. I have recently moved to Australia and have bought with me my beloved R5 GTT. The car is fully road worthy except for my speedo as i can't seem to get it working. I have bought the 'Intellitronix' digital speedo from Nordskog Performance Products, in America (as in the Carisma car as it was in the Ali G movie). But i am having trouble connecting it to the original R5 speed sensor. I have tried everything and then some. Please can you tell me how i should be connecting this or if i need a new speed sensor and if so which one do i need. I have asked many R5 specialists and they either can't help me or don't want to or just ignore me. I have even asked Carisma but they don't want to help me. Please can you solve this problem for me so that i can get this beast back on the road and show these 5.7 litre V8 Fords and Holdens what real performance is. Cheers. Tambo

Answer:
G'day sport,

You could try calling BB Tuning (number in Contacts section) as they had a hand in the engine/mechanical side of Jamie's (boss of Carisma) old demo R5, thus chances are they may have fitted/wired up his digital speedo.

If they can't help, come back to us and we'll try other avenues, as I'm assuming it's not as simple as taking the signal feed from the gearbox speedo sensor and hooking that up to your gauge...is it?!

Subject: no boost

Question:
hi there i recently brought a gtt clio and when driving it the turbo would only spin up to 3500 rpm and then release all the presure through the dump valve, i changed the turbo for another only to find a small crack in the exhaust housing joining to wastegate, i had to use the car and fitted it anyway and i now can run up to 4000 rpm? is this crack the problem on both turbos or can it be something else? many thanks

Answer:
Unless the crack is the size of the grand canyon, I'd say you've got other problems, as it's fairly common to see hairline cracks around the wastegate area after a while.

You sure there isn't a boost leak somewhere? Either boost cct side (losing boost that way), or exhaust manifold side (losing gas drive to the turbo, hence low boost pressures produce).

Subject: head gasket

Question:
when i asked about my head gasket i forgot to mention im loosin water and the runins poor.

Answer:
Again, it could indicate a headgasket failure, or worse, a cracked liner.

Then again, it could be 2 separate problems; an external water leak and carb issues (for example).

Subject: Air Filter Part 2.

Question:
Hello again.... would it do any harm to use the pipercross cone filter instead of the K+N induction kit even though my car is not over 200 bhp? Also seen a stainless steel filter on the net.... any thoughts on these?

Cheers.

Hezza.

Answer:
Nope, it won't make that much difference, if any, as long as it's kept away from heat sources.

Only reason I mentioned about the 200bhp thing is because the standard air-box is allegedly ( wink ) restrictive once you get to around 200bhp or so.

The keyword there though is 'allegedly'...

Subject: Rev Limiter

Question:
Hi, I am trying to wire up an Omex rev limiter, the instructions tell me to connect a wire to the coil negative terminal, as the coil is not a traditional one can you tell me the easiest way of finding the negative part of the coil, the rest of the wiring is easy!! i don't have a Haynes manual!!!

Answer:
if you take the 2 torx bolts off the front of the ign coil, it pulls away from the rest of the unit. ontop there are two pegs, they are labelled +ve and -ve. i used to feed the wire through and loop it around one of the springy connectors that clip onto the peg. then just bolt it all back together.

Subject: Digital Speedo

Question:
G'day there Wizard of OZ. I have already trying BB Tuning, but unfortunately they were not involved with the fitment of the speedo. I have tried to simply connect the signal output to the gauge as this is all the instructions say that you need to do. But for some reason its not working. I think Carisma are probably the only people that can tell me how they did it, but i just can't get an answer from them. Its very frustrating because it has taken me 3 years to rebuild to car to the standard it is now and due to this currently problem its been wasting away in my garage for the last 8 months. I hope you can help me oh magic one :-) Cheers Scott

Answer:
well... there could be a couple of reasons that the speedo isn't working...
firstly take the clocks out and clean all the weird folded over earths and stuff. there is also a bit of floppy circuit that is pushed into a slot at the back of the speedo , pull it out, clean it up , and make sure when you push it back in the 3 contacts are 'contacting'!!! i have found you may need to pad it with some cardboard to get a good connection. secondly check the whole length of the wire to the gearbox for burned bits. then also check the black connector that seperates the top and bottom half of the wire, these can mess up too. you may just have a duff lower part of the cable- that has the sensor built in.- how would you get one over there?
there is a short term measure to get it back on the road.- use a cycle speedo, put the sensor on the drive shaft, and place the unit on your dash, and type in the external dimensions of your tyre. this will and does work for alot of VW's wink

Subject: Digital speedo

Question:
Thanks for answering the question. I'll have a go with the cycle speedo to get the car on the road. But i'm still going to need to find out more about fitting the 'Intellitronix' digital speedo. I don't have the original clocks anymore (they/along with all my other spares were stolen from the back of my car when it was transported to Australia). If you can somehow find out how Carisma fitted these gauges it'll be much appriecated. In the mean time i may try to see if any other members have fitted this speedo. Cheers. Tambo

Answer:
Just found this, which might be of some use...

Subject: water loss

Question:
done a comp test and got 135 on 1 and 3. and 140 on 2 and 4, dont know if this means anythin. sorted out moisture on cap,it was a split rocker breather pipe.bad runnin was due to loose nuts on manifold. do you think i could be loosin water through my inlet manifold and goin through to my exhaust manifold and bein burnt there? sorry if this sounds stupid cheers mate

Answer:
yes it does sound stupid wink -but not impossible. although ive never heard of it happening. water loss is usually from one of the pipe where it attaches to the water pump. after getting the car hot and giving it a 'good drive' look for leaks around that area! is there any pressure in the expansion bottle at all?

Subject: Radiator Fan 2

Question:
I have swapped the relay, checked fuses, but still no luck. any other options I could consider?

there is definitley continuity in the switches, i have tested the fan and it works could it just be the wiring? Or is there anthing else i can test?

Answer:
there is a really simple way of of doing this.
1) get a live feed off the alternator.
2) plug it into the rad fan switch.
3) from the other terminal on the rad fan switch connect it to the red wire on the radiator fan motor.
4) connect the black wire of the rad fan motor to an earth.

should work fine now.

Question:
how you doing just a quick question ive tried to fit a new accelater cable to my 5 gt phase 2 raider i routed it along the bulk head but it is nochi i have to put my foot under the peddal to lower revs is that the right way to rought it any ideas cheers have a nice day

Answer:
you need to shorten the accelerator spring. also check for a slightly misrouted cable!- also if you have the plastic outer sheath as opposed to the original metal spring one, then the outer can be squeezed so it touches the inner cable by the clamp on the manifold! this will make it notchy!

hi whats the best way to bleed water system? ive just put all my engine bay back to gether checked and double checket all pipework routes its perfect gone to bleed it removing both top bleeds and even when warm (thermostate open) there seems to be little coming out of the top rad hose bleed any advice? also have lifted up header bottle to help things to.thanks nick.

squeeze the little hose that goes to the top of the expansion bottle, and blow into the top of it. mouth round the top!!! not just blowing into it!!! this pressurises the water system and pushes air out of the two bleed holes.
