Subject: knocking noise at rear??

Question:
hello, i got my r5 lowered all round using the 50mm apex spring and shocker kit about 2 months ago. it has obviously made it a harsher ride but not too bad. the problem is, there is now a knocking noise coming from the back whenever i got over a bumpy section of road, i think it is coming from the drivers side. at first i thought it was my boot lid rattling around but that is ok. any ideas please??? thanks alot.

Answer:
Exhaust banging? Although that's on the passenger side.

If it's slammed low at the back, it could be bottoming-out on the bumpstops, or if they're not in place, smashing onto the shock body itself, hence the knocking?

Is the spare wheel carrier secure?

Subject: running a bar?

Question:
Hey WIZ! My engine is completly standard (saving for engine rebuild).
I am buying some jets for the carb ive heard its better to fiddle with standard carb then get a group a up to certain psi ? getting head gasket and tensile bolts dne. wot else do i need to do to run a bar safely?

Thanks Gal

Answer:
Yes, but you don't want to be 'fiddling' with any jets unless you've got a way of measuring the fuelling, otherwise how will you know if it's running lean on full boost, or over-fuelling at idle, etc?

And just because your mate 'high boost Bob' might be running a given jet config which fuels his engine nicely, doesn't mean that same spec carb will be ok for your engine.

If you're only going to run 1bar boost, chances are the carb will fuel for that as per standard jet config, or to play safe you could drill the main jet out to 1.3mm (it's 1.2mm standard), but that's all you'll need to do.

Subject: pop noise

Question:
hi wiz.my car runs and drives good, it is only standard but alateley if i open it up for a while then come to a stop and turn the car off after a few seconds there is a load pop from exhaust like a backfire any clues?

Answer:
It can be induced if the fuelling is lean (causing the exhaust manifold/egt to be high, and potentially burning off any residual fuel/vapour when the engine is switched off), but I've heard several 5's do that, so maybe it's fairly normal...or maybe they're running lean fuel mixtures?

Subject: head gasket

Question:
Hi wizard could u help me please the head gasket has gone on my phase2 for the 4th time and the third time with a grpA gasket what is the best thing for me to do now i know nothing about engines and if i have to replace anything what do i need to buy many thanks in advance

Answer:
First thing you need to do is work out why the gaskets keep blowing.

Have you just whacked the boost up without sorting the fuelling?

Are your charge temp's nice n' low?

Is Stevie Wonder skimming the head each time?

Who's changing the headgasket? Maybe their workmanship is questionable?

etc etc

Subject: T25 TOMCAT TURBO

Question:
hi wiz , any detailed instructions /articles on converting theT25 TOMCAT TURBO for use on the 5 and if not do you know any good turbo links that give details ...cheers

Answer:
No, it's never been fitted to an R5t before.

It's never been mentioned on the boards before, so you defo shouldn't do a search for it.

And no, you probably won't find a dozen plus pages of topics discussing it.

Subject: Knocking noise at rear part 2

Question:
thanks for ur reply. i have a side exit exhaust which is very secure, and i have taken the spare wheel carrier and bracket off. it must be something to do with the bumpstops being out of place as it does sound like something is hitting underneath the car or like you say smashing onto the shock body itself. my question now is, is it a hard job to adjust the bumpstops or will i need better ones to prevent future bottoming out and knocking problems? thanks alot.
james.

Answer:
check that the bolt hasnt snapped off the bottom of the shock, also fit rubber bump stops...get them from anywhere. just to stop em bottoming out. not sure how easy it is to adjust the damping rate on adjustable rears, cant be that hard can it?- remove wheel perhaps and twist away?

Subject: GASFLOWING THE HEAD

Question:
hi wiz,if I was to have my head stge 1 gassflowed and use a standard carb that has been rejeted wud that be ok or wud it not like it? if not please can you tell me wot else i will need, apart from a freeflowing exhaust.cheers mate.

Answer:
its a funny old world the renault 5 scene. see if you are after power up to say 220bhp, then you can do this on a standard head and spend money else where. a bigger turbo and a bigger bore exhaust do actually work wonders... also a boost increase helps.
if you were to get the head bored it would make it better in the future- but just how much power do you want?

Subject: breather pipes

Question:
alright wizz how u doin bud, i think ive got a problem with my breather pipes , i couldnt find the pipe that runs to the air filter hose(its already gone) so i could put my little breather filter in so the pipe that used to connect to the main boost hose i blocked that off the main boost hose and put the filter hose on the bit of hose that connected to it im confusing myself now. my alloy breather pot hasnt got any pipes connected to the top of it ive been looking at pictures of r5 engines and everyone has a pipe connected to it please could u tell me were all the pipes connect to i havnt got a clue whats goin on cheers mate

Answer:
oh dear... let me enlighten you.
from breather pot top connection should go to 3 way joiner. smaller diamter 'T' of joiner goes to manifold one way valve. the other larger 'T' of joiner then goes to telephone hose (turbo inlet)-you can stick a breather on this instead.
the middle breather pot connection goes to the rocker cover port.

Subject: head gasket

Question:
would u recommend getting a really thick head gasket to lower the compression as my uprated gasket from k-tec as just blown?cheers wizzy

Answer:
no, i wouldn't. id look into why you blew the ktec one first. usually people with over enthusiastic wrist action on their knob and too little fuel cause them to blow. better look into it else it WILL happen again.

Subject: knocking noise at rear part 3

Question:
the bottom bolt on the shocker hadn't snapped off, but had worked itself out a bit so i have tightened it back up. where abouts are the rubber bump stops located and fitted? i asked my mechanic friend and he didn't know where they were!! plus will i need to get them for both sides? sorry to be a pain on a problem that is probably so simple to you. thanks again.

Answer:
you need to fit them over the metal shaft of the rear damper. the actual shaft that slides in and out of the uni!!! alittle creative cutting and cable tie-ing may be needed to get it on properly. it stops the damper completely closing on itself.

Question:
Hi wiz,my car has been stood for a week or so,it would not start,BLOODY FROSTS,so i changed the battery, still no joy,she spins up and nearly fires,it was low on fuel so i had to go and fill a can up,do you think it is some crap been sucked up into the carb?Blocked the jet?The fuel pump works, smell petrol by the carb, any ideas? Thanks for your help in this matter.

Answer:
i think you need more fuel in there.
take the boost hose off and spray some sort of deodorant or air freshner into the carb...it will definately start then.

Subject: head gasket

Question:
ive been getin mayo sludge in my swirl pot and on my filler cap but not really on the dipstick . do you think its the head gasket or another problem.
many thanks

Answer:
do a compression check. if its ok, it could be just condensation. it always happens! if it gets real bad, then there maybe a hairline crack in the head, thats letting vapour leak out into the rocker cover area.

Subject: timing pt2

Question:
hi wizard.ive got the car running now after repositioning the dizzy drive to number 1,but i still have a slight misfire and the car idles high,at about 1300rpm,ive checked the leads and plugs and cleaned everthing.i have an overhauled carb with all the seals replaced correctly, hopefully!is it something simple 2 sort out or would it be a good idea 2 take it 2 a tuner now?

Answer:
Adjust the idle screw on the carb (l.h.s if facing it from the driver's side) to bring it down to 1000rpm, or wherever the engine is happy running at.

Misfire could be an air-leak around the carb, which could also tie in with the high idle problems you've got.

Is the misfire at a certain rpm, at the top end, at idle, etc etc?

Subject: manifold stud

Question:
Morning, when i was doing the passengers side carb nut up, the one that secures it to the manifold it got to a certain tightness and then the stud started twisting aswell. If this stud is loose will it be creating an air leak through the gap where the std is twisting. At the moment i've managed to get some mole girps to hold the stud while i do the nut up tight so the carb sits flat onto the manifold. Thanks

Answer:
it will cause an air leak. you had better drill and helicoil that baby quick time!

Subject: OIL BREATHING?!

Question:
hey there wiz, iv noticed that my oil system seems to be breathing more heavily recently, i am starting to get a layer of oil (thin) around the breather pot from the oil breather filter,

what would be causing this matey,
last time it did it it was due to piston rings...but these ones arnt that old

cheers

take it easy

Answer:
what does your oil smell of?- petrol?- overfuelling would cause the petrol to thin out considerably and pop up in places it shouldn't. also do a compression check just incase!

hey wiz,if i was to put a k-tec twin 4"" exhaust on my 5 with a 2 and a half inch bore pipe wud i also need to have a bigger turbo pipe and elbo if i wanted more power?cheers mate.

Indeed, as it's pretty pointless fitting a larger bore exhaust (except for the noise increase) when the oe elbow is restrictive/downpipe is still 2"" i.d

Subject: Low oil pressure/breather system

Question:
Hello Wizzard,

While helping a friend with his GT we have noticed a problem! All we have done is remove the carb, overhaul it and refit but:

We not get very low oil pressure ~20psi at idle, and very heavy breathing from the crank! If you push the throttle you can see some oil vapor from the breather filter thingy falling on the exhaust manifold. I know this is not very good - but any idea?

The oil pressure guage is plumbed into the turbo feed, so I guessed the problem might be:

1. Block oil feed to turbo
2. Oil filter in need of change - we can't remember when it was last done, althought it hasn't done many miles on the current one.
3. Blown gasket or cracked liner maybe?

I sniffed the oil... it smelt ""oily"". The coolant looks okay.

Please help!

Answer:
Hello Jon,

Excessive vapour from the breather filter would indicate a cylinder blow-by problem; ie, worn rings, scored liners, cracked ring-lands, etc.

That's of course assuming the breather pipes are in order and not blocked etc.

Grab a compression tester, measure each cylinder, and come back to us with the results.

Subject: Uprated Manifold

Question:
hello there, i was wondering will it be worth getting an 'uprated' or 'free flowing' exhaust manifold,in terms of getting much more power. i have a t25 turbo, uprated cam, side exit, grp 'A' k-tec carb and running about 12psi.should i waste my hard earned cash on the manifold or is there something else i could do to gets me some more power, thanks for your help, Ben

Answer:
i wouldnt bother with the exhaust manifold. just turn the boost up to 18psi...assuming you have got a grp a carb.... not an alleged one...
