Subject: gear box

Question:
hi wiz!
just decided to change the gear box oil today,i drained it out and only had 0.5 litres in it i was shocked any way i found out why, i was filling it up and got 3 litres in it till it started leaking out somewhere else i had a look and it was leaking out of the drive shaft gaitor it is split! do u know what this is ?does it need a new gaitor or as some seal gone in the engine ?is it an engine out job or what ?please help me im pissed off some thing always goes wrong lol!!!!!

Answer:
it'll be leaking out of the passenger side inner driveshaft gaiter then. its probably easier to drain the gearbox oil again, and take the drivershaft out. its easy to do.undo- 30mm nut on the hub. 2 x 18mm nuts/bolts that attach hub to shaock absorber. 3 x 13mm bolts that attach driveshaft to gearbox. pull hub forward and push driveshaft out of hub. sorted. you may be able to find a driveshaft recon place to refit a gaiter to it, or you may have to get a new shaft.

Subject: gearbox

Question:
hi wiz i have a noise at the drivers front wheel i replaced the bearing and then the shaft but it is still there if i turn left it gets louder but if i turn right i goes away i was told this may be the bearing on the end of the shaft at the box end any help on this problem would be great DAZ

Answer:
check that the cv joints (inner and outer) actually have grease in them.... over time the grease can go oily, and spin to the outside of the joint, making them dry in the middle- make a wiring clunking noise......
does it make the noise when the front of the car is jacked up and the car running in gear?

Subject: oil filter

Question:
hi wiz. ive just had the oil changed on my car, when i bought a new filter the guy in the shop looked in his part book for his suppliers and gave me a filter which it quoted for my car, thinking it was the correct filter i fitted it because it fitted right and looked like the old one,but then disaster i took my car out and as i was driving the oil light came on,so i stopped and realised a trail of oil behind me from which i came the oil filter had come off and dumped all the oil from the engine.had car towed home and went back to shop with old filter when he put the details of the old filter in the computer it came up with a totaly different filter then which it says for a r5 any ideas why this could be? seems like my car as got a different filter for some reason.

Answer:
Assuming you aren't running some fancy remote oil filter setup, and that the filter bolts on to the o.e sandwich plate/block, make life easier for yourself and pay £5 or so for the genuine filter from your local Renaul dealership.

Subject: done headgasket run rough now not at all?

Question:
right... have fitted new headgasket etc started her up and she ran but very rough had to use choke and throttle to keep it running then would idel on its own rev it then die. now it wont start all all took the plugs out and they wer wet ok timing out i thought so got the piston closest to flywheel in tdc and checked dizzy position at first the metal part of the rotorarm was facing me was told could be 180 deg out so removed dizzy cranked around until piston was tdc again and the rotar arm faced the other way still doesnt....start any ideas???

Answer:
Did you actually remove the dizzy gear (cam drive component) when replacing the headgasket? If not, then the dizzy gear should slot back in the way it came out, thus the rotor arm can't be out of alignment, thus you need to be looking elsewhere.

Are the ht leads on correctly? Perhaps it's an air leak on the inlet side that's developed? Or lack of fuel getting to the carb? Crap in the carb jets? etc, etc.

Subject: dieing

Question:
i have just bought a r5 gtt and if i havent got any choke on and i touch the throttle the car almost cuts out and then picks up again sometimes even does cut out as if it is starving of fuel i was wondering wat this could be could it be as simple as the person before running it out of fuel ??? there was NO fuel in it wen i got it not even enuff to start the car .

Answer:
the accelerator pump is sticking. check the drivers side of the carb, when you move the throttle, the linkage under the carb should make the little see-saw metal thingy in the middle of 4 bolts move in and out. this pumps fuel into the carb when you rev it and makes sure the car dont die when it swaps between the idle and main circuits.....
they usually get corroded up. undo the 4 bolts around it...dont lose the spring behind the gasket and clean it up with sandpaper....you'll see what i mean.

Subject: Too hot for sure

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Where should a healthy R5 turbo temperature gauge sit? Mine is fine if left at idle for 10 mins (stays around 1/4), at about 15 mins of idle it goes up to about halfway, then settles. If i then drive the car it goes just above 3/4. then fan then kicks in and sends it back just under 3/4. Do you think it is a blockage? I have removed the thermostat and tried a different radiator (not sure if this radiaor is any better than the one i took off though). I ran some coolant flush through it last night, but haven't tested it since, what are the possible solutions if the coolant flush hasn't worked? Thanks in advance

Ste

Answer:
put in a low temp rad fan switch. this will make it hover between 1/2way and 60° mark. also- use a thermostat!!!

Subject: Too hot for sure 2

Question:
Ok, I have fitted thermostat yet, but I have changed the radiator again and re-bled the system. the car runs at around 2/3, fan kicks in just over then it takes it back under. if i leave the fan on all the time the car runs about half way between 1/3 and 2/3. is that ok? I'm worried that when i put in the thermostat the temp will rise again. How can i tell if head gasket has gone?

Answer:
its fine!

Subject: ideling

Question:
hi wiz!
my car starts up first time every time even in the cold with out choke and it idles at about 1000 rpm i leave it running for about a min and the revs will start getting lower and lower untill it cuts out even if i put the choke on when it starts to die it will do the same it does get better when its warmed up ,if i boot it to high boost then slow down to a junction it will idle ok,but sometimes it will just die at junctions, bloody weird if u ask me?has it owt to do with crank case ventilation?help me wiz!

Answer:
Nah, sounds more like the idle mixture is incorrect, or you've got muck in the idle jet (big brass screw-head on driver's side of carb).

Idle c.o mixture should be circa 1.5% - Your local mot station will be able to set that up for you, probably for a couple of beer tokens.

Subject: interior fan in bulkhead

Question:
hi wiz, ive stripped my car 4 my respray. ive removed the interior fan from the bulkhead, but cant seem to remove the plastic mounting frame it sits in. is this part of the interior air box wich would mean removing the dashboard( which i really dont want 2 do)?
Also the wiring loom that comes through the bulk head ( 4 wiper motors etc)will need removing is there a plug under the dash that can be uncliped or do i have to cut and re- solder?????

Answer:
dunno about the wiring....probably part of the loom....cant you just push it back through the bulkhead temporarily?
the heater fan base is part of the centre console.... so you will have to remove the dash to remove it- sorry!

Question:
hi wiz, i wana lower the front 90mm, iv heard that arch trimming is needed with 15inch rims! is this needed with standard 13inch rims? and also do no of a coilover kit that will drop 90mm? cheers dude.

Answer:
You shouldn't need to trim the arches, not with std 13's in place.

Not sure which coilover kit will allow that much drop, so it might be worth your while emailing Avo, Spax, Gaz, etc for their answer - Look on Google for weblinks to said companies.

Subject: click click

Question:
Hi wiz,
after trying to start my car for a few days to no avail, left it for a week and all i'm getting is a clicking from the starter motor. I have fully charged my battery, put jump leads from the missus' car and it turned for about 10 secs then slowed until stopping. Have i fried the starter?? PS. can you answer my question from a week ago as this would be a massive help for as i'm clueless and p!!! off with my 5 already! You could save me from burning it. Thanks in advance mate.

Answer:
Try changing the battery for a known good one (and fully charge that), make sure all battery connections are clean/good, make sure the starter motor connections are tight/good, then try again.

If it keeps clicking, check the white solenoid wire going to the starter motor is getting a good 12v (when under load).

Also make sure all the engine bay earths are in good order.
