Subject: No coolant geting around the Turbo/Carb/Manifold circuit... Question: Hi, My 5 doesnt run very well untill FULLY warmed up. Ive discovered that the water pipes to the carb and manifold are not getting hot like the others, the pipes around the turbo get warm, but I think this is heat soak rather than coolant flow. Ive got some new silicone pipes to replacae the lot with anyway. I am wondering, is this likly to be a blockage problem? In the carb base? Or could there be a problem with the water pump (looks brand new). I notice somthing else rather strange, ther is no bleed nipple on the top water pump --> degaschamber hose in the usualy place. The only bleed nipple is on the main waterpump-toprad hose, could this mean system cant be bled properly hence maybe an airlock in the carb/manifold/turbo circuit? Ive tried bleeding the system again, through only the one bleed nipple and it makes no difference. Cheers. Answer: sounds like you may have a blocked turbo. this can happen through erm, liberal use of radweld... |

Subject: tapping Question: my engine makes a tappety noise when ticking over wat could this be and how do i sort it out Answer: Need a bit more info on this one - It could be the valve clearances need tightening up a bit, exhaust manifold leaking, bottom-end knocking, or Chad Jackson of 'Hear the drummer get wicked' fame has set up home in your engine bay. |

Subject: carb pipes? Question: hi wizzard, if you look directly at the carb elbow there are four intlets/outlets, my bottom left pipe which is a rigid 90 bend and it has a split in it, this then goes into a platic t pieace, i think? right my question is:- what goes through this pipe? and a cheeky second question is could i replace with silicon vacumn hose ifso what size? did not know due to the 90 bend being ridgid and wondered about pipe closing if bent? thanks John ps: hope this makes sense? Answer: It's hard to say what pipe you're on about, as the o.e elbow has 3 ports. 2 are connected to the actuator, and 1 is connected to the accelerator pump, the o.e boost gauge, and is also the pressure reference feed for the fuel pressure regulator. Yep, you can replace with silicon hosing if needs be - 6mm i.d should do the trick. |

Subject: using a stored engine Question: i have had a gtt engine stored in my garage for about 6 months or so what should i be doing or looking out for if i want to use it now....does it need rebuilt really before i can use it? Answer: No need to rebuild it if it's been sitting there (assuming it was running ok before-hand?). You could whip off the sump and make sure no rust has got into any of the bottom-end bearings, but that's only if it's been stored in damp conditions. Chances are it'll be fine - Just make sure you prime the oil through the engine properly before firing it up, don't thrash/high it rev once it's started, keep an ear out for any nasty sounds and an eye out for any leaks, and barring all that you should be laughing. |

Subject: starting Question: hello there, please help. for a while now my 5 has been struggling to start. i need to turn the key for about 10 seconds and keep giving it throttle and then it goes.(apart from if it's the 1st start of the day eg morning). once it starts it jitters a bit while i drive off until it warms up a bit, which doesnt trouble me much, as when it's warmed up it drives fine. if i was to pull in, turn the car off, and directly start it again,. it will start first time. but if i park up and go to the gym or something, when i come back it's back to struggling to start. then while driving home the other day, i pulled in to a layby to use the phone and turned the car off. when i tried to start it again it was totally dead, wouldnt even turn over. but all the lights were on. i left it for a while and then it started(not easily) i got home and turned it off, dead again but all lights working. left it went out in the morning and it started first time. then last night drove to see the mrs, car was fine, came out to the car later, the car was cold, it started. i had the choke on and as i drove about 200 yards through the village i slowed down for a car still with choke on and car started spluttering along untill it stalled. then it was just turning without starting and after about a minute finally started and i got home. i dont know if this is a different problem, as it's never done that while driving. scared to take it anywhere now cos it seems to fix itself then going wrong again. i hope i'm making sense trying to explain. Answer: maybe you need to renew the cap/plugs/rotor etc etc and then maybe get a carb diaphragm kit, and clean the carb out. a general service perhaps? |

Subject: central locking Question: i am after both driver and passenger central locking catches.what im wanting to know is is there any other r5 with central locking apart from the turbo version if there is i might get them from scrap yard cheers wiz! Answer: I believe at the time it was an option at the dealers, so it depends if the 1st owners of ya average Campus, Prima, Monaco, GTX, etc wanted the 'luxury' (sic) of electric windows or not. There always seems to be an R5t being scrapped weekly in the Classifieds or on Ebay, so keep ya eyes peeled on there as well. |

Subject: clutch pedal Question: hey there wizard is there such a thing as a manual adjusting cable and pedal set up? Answer: Not that I know of, although you can 'reset' the tension on the self-adjuster mechanism at the top of the clutch pedal, so that it re-tauts the cable again. Or is that what you meant? |

Subject: rear suspension Question: alright wizard hows u, i was working on my car the other day and noticed that if u look at the car from behind one side is alot higher than the other only on the back. the car is standard suspension set up i rang the bloke i brought the car of he said the car was hit from behind he said he had it fixed i had a look under the car but i dont really know what to look what do u think cheers bud Answer: Assuming both your rear tyres are the same height profile, and the bumper is on straight it could be that someone has mis-aligned the torsion bars when repairing the back-end.If so, have a look in the Articles section and reset/re-position the height of the bars so that your car sits level. |

Subject: whats this pipe for Question: alright wizard on my carb elbow which is standard with two connectors on the right and one on the left, the connector on the left has the usuall pipe running off it but half way along it has a t piece in it with a pipe running off it which isnt connected to anything what could this be for ive got a boost gauge which doesnt seem to work could it be this should i take it off and replace the pipe that has the t piece in Answer: Pipe on the left goes to 4 places... 1) Carb elbow. 2) Accelerator pump circuit. 3) Fuel pressure regulator. 4) Dash boost gauge. You need all 4 connected otherwise you'll be leaking boost, and as a result the fuel reg' won't be working properly. If your boost gauge isn't working and you've got a pipe hanging loose... ![]() |

Subject: rad 4 track car Question: hi wiz, imcurrantly building my 5gtt as a fast road track car, hoping for 180/200bhp. im gona need extra cooling, ive heard about the extra diesil van rad and the clio diesil wots the difference? will they use the same fittings as the 5gtt rad? I also like the look of the pace and bbpt alloy rad. wot do u think about these? finally will a 10 mocal 10 row oil cooler do the job? thanks pete. Answer: Believe it or not, but a standard radiator works fine (think Cup cars). If you find it's all getting too hot, fit a remote oil cooler (yep, the 10-row Mocal unit will be upto the job) and that should keep the water temp's down. If not, the extra van/clio diesel radiator (they're virtually the same) is your next choice (and you will need a remote oil cooler if using them), but I'd try the standard rad' first and see how you get on. |

Subject: which engine mounts Question: which engine mounts shud i buy, pearl high tech parts from partco, or the gsf upraded engine mounts? thanks pete Answer: Pearl are stronger than the ones GSF supply, but then there's nothing wrong with the GSF/standard ones. You may find the stronger mounts make the car shake/rattle more at idle. |
