Subject: is it to hot

Question:
hi wiz i my car runs at a constant halfway{over second line} in normal town driving when i was on the motorway between 70 to 90 the temp will sit under the third line and at the most nearly the third line when taken over 100 mph.Is this normal and what temp should it read at these speeds.? I have copper rad 82 degree thermo stat and the fan cuts in at halfway. on a stage 2 hybrid on 12 psi. New engine 2 years ago uprated head gasket. If the rad is blocked how do i sort it. Thank you wizzy mate.

Answer:
You can try flushing out the rad' and see if any mounds of crap fly out, or for the sake of £70 or so, treat your car to a new rad'.

Before that though, make sure the thermostat is opening correctly/fully, and that none of the coolant pipes are kinked (check the bottom rad' outlet to water-pump hose for starters).

All of this is assuming that the needle on the temp gauge hasn't been played with, and is reading true...

Subject: Red hot manifold

Question:
Hi wiz. Just rebuilt my engine with the Yellow engine package from BB. I bought the tubular manifold from K-tec and I am currently running it in. My question is: The exhaust manifold gets a bit red when I am driving and it doesnt get over 2500 rpms. Is it something to worry about? I have wrapped it in powerwrap.

Answer:
It shouldn't be getting that hot if you're only running the engine in.

What kinda cam timing are you running? Is the carb' jetted ok? (ie, not running lean)

Subject: cosworth turbo?

Question:
would a COSWORTH T3 2WD TURBOCHARGER fit straight onto my 5? looks like the housing would need to be rotated, would i need to mod any pipework ect?

one last question, would the turbo be to big to use? im going the whole hog with the engine so...

cheers wiz

Answer:
no it wouldnt fit straight on as the mounting to the manifold is different. you need a t25 flange, not a t3 flange.
also it would be very laggy. unless you use NOS.

Question:
hi wiz,please help me.
the other day my missus gave my head a a bit of a polish & i think i have a bit of a problem cos at the end there was this mayo stuff all over her face,is it the gasket?
also,im thinking of doing a bit of porting, but i dont know which would be best, the inlet has some pink flaps but does'nt seem to cause a restriction,or the outlet which is very tight hole.
what do you think & why?

Answer:
you sound like a very lonely man, with a big imagination. somewhere alot the line you have crossed the car/love boundary.
i always find you can ream out the exhaust port with a blunt instument and plenty of lube. turns the car into abit of a screamer....

Subject: Dieing Then Picking Up?

Question:
Hi Wiz

When i put my foot down, my car dies ( not stalling but the revs drop and they dont pick up ) but after a second the car picks up and off i go, if i put my choke on tho so the revs are quite high it doesnt do it ) , if im driving normaly this doesnt happen at all ( i.e not tryin to get a fast start )
Any ideas as to what it could be? its not to much of a problem cos normal driving is fine but its a pain when i want to leave someone at the lights wink

Thnx Jay smile

Answer:
its the accelerator pump. check that the metal seesaw mechanism on the drivers side of the carb is working correctly when you move the throttle. if you take the carb top off, you should see a squirt of fuel from the thin brass tube at the top of the venturi!!! if the mechanism does move, then it could be that the jet is blocked. so you will have to take the top off the carb, and undo the 6 bolts and remove the top portion of the carb. and take the thin brass tube section out of the carb and clean it thoroughly!

Subject: weird

Question:
OK WIZ, bit of a prob as uve probably hearld already on the boards. My car starts sometimes, it seems as if there is an intermitant fault somewhere. First time it didn't start, i disconected a three pin plug of somesort witch was located behind my tubo (with a white cable)-looks like it goes neer the starter motor and back along to neer the driver via behind the turbo. When i disconnected it the first time it Started!

Then the next couple of hours it never started again! There was no spark. I checked all leads (live feed to ecu + tdc). all seemed ok. but still never started. Then after a while i took another car with some jump leads and tried to start my car, with the main lead out, and it had a spark so then it started again. ... Then removed the jump leads and started the next 2 or three times.

Then left it overnight, and no spark again.

WTF is going on? and wat is this 3 pin plug i disconnected which made it start! but now doesn't again.???

IF u can help i would be much apreciated! Thanks SLIM<smile

Answer:
the 3 pin connector is the speedo connector and is unrelated.
im assuming the car tries to turn over...i.e the starter motor works? if you have an alarm/immobiliser on it id be inclined to point the finger at that. one of the circuits may not be engaging...
could get round this by making a switchable +ve feed to the aei. then if you get down the road and you've run out of petrol then you know you fuel pump feed is also cut wink

Subject: 5

Question:
my 5 (running standard t2,alloy intercooler, grp a gasket and carb) has the following symptoms:

1) sounds spluttery when releasing throttle.

2)smells petrolly on tickover sumtimes

3)boost not coming in till around 4000rpm,even then hardly any pull.

performance not majorly affected i.e. not coughing, kangeroo'ing or stalling- Turbo is to be swopped for a hybrid (its deinfately on its way out, lots of play in shaft) with new actuator at xmas (pressie wink - so this may solve and account for prob 3.
-mate has suggested I get TIMING and MIXTURE set up CHECKED BEFORE i swop turbo - as this may account for probs 1 and 2 - whats ur advice doctor 5?

Answer:
you need to check for leaks etc etc. may be manifold gasket leak that is allowing fuel vapour to escape. may also explain lazy car behaviour on boost.

Subject: Missfire

Question:
Hello sir. Just stuck a head on new car to see what it runs like. Been stood for 18 months with no head fitted. Cleaned up bores and slapped on my flowed head. New plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm. Ticks over sweet at 4 bar pressure but when revved to fast idle it misses like hell! Compression test showed all cylinders at 10 bar, which i thought was pretty good, head fine as it was ok on pod car. Reckon its either fuel quality or crank sensor but after a second opinion before i set too it again when i get time! Any help much appreciated. Also the crank sensor had the leads switched, what does that achieve? Seemed to idle smoother when correct way round?

Answer:
sounds like its got a cam in it, and the rotor and dizzy cap aint inline, when the car revs the spark advances, and this can through out the spark enuff to cause probs. hence why reverting the timing sensor leads back to normal helps.
get the engine to tdc, on the flywheel. then see where the rotor is pointing..i bet its at the rad or the alt, and not straight forward...also where are the oxidation marks on the contacts inside the dizzy cap?- i bet they aint central....
you may have to end up cuting one of the prongs off the foot ofthe dizzy to rotate it, and hold it inplace with the clamp and 11mm bolt...

Subject: tire size

Question:
Hello Wiz! I'm thinking of installing 195/45R15 tyres on the front wheels and 205/40R15 tyres on the rear wheels. Is this a good idea and will it fit?

Answer:
Not sure that 205's would fit the rear, unless you're running std ride height and/or a larger offset rear wheel(s).

The question is though, unless you've got a funky rwd conversion on the go, is why?

Subject: fuel ??

Question:
hey wizard the time has come to fill up for the first time my renault 5 gtt ive been reading on this site that they should run on four star or 96 or 98 ron unleaded ive been searching every petrol station in bristol they only do 95 ron is this ok my car will be running big boost soon and i dont want any pinking what can i do cheers bud

Answer:
95ron fuel will be fine for normal to medium boost levels, but 97ron (super unleaded) or 98ron (Optimax) should be used with higher boost levels.

Certain Tesco's now supply a 99ron unleaded fuel, so that might be worth giving a go if you plan on running v high boost, but 9 times out of 10, normal 97ron super unleaded will be fine.

Subject: front mount??

Question:
alright wiz i was thinking about getting the forge fmic but i was told because i have have a spider valve when i have it on low boost 9psi it will be laggy as the fmic has to fill up with air but i also run 20psi on full boost will a combo of forge fmic and a twin core alloy intercooler remedy this or can u think of anything to help please thanku

Answer:
Yeah, ignore the person who's spouting bollox to you! big grin

It's been proved that by fitting a larger intercooler in-line hardly increases the lag/spool-up rate at all - That's true for also re-routing the pipework as such to fit an intercooler in a front-mount position.

If you're running an fmic, chances are you won't need the twin-core intercooler in-line as well, but do some charge temp' measuring and see how you get on smile Don't forget though, that the more intercoolers you put in-line, the more the pressure drop will be between the turbo outlet and carb inlet, hence the turbo will have to work harder to produce the same original/required pressure at the carb.

Swings and roundabouts...

Subject: KTR 230 Hybrid

Question:
I bougt a ktr 230 hybrid from k-tec, they say that this turbo will be good for 25psi and 230 hp. I find that a bit strange.
The turbo that they sendt me has A/R 48 on compressor and A/R 47 on exhaust housing. Isent that a bit small for producing 230 hp?

Answer:
It does, but then it depends on the compressor wheel trim, the boost it needs to run at to produce that power, and the given engine spec it's going to be mated to.

Chances are it may help produce 230bhp, but will it be running efficiently at that level of boost or will it be well into the choke zone?

Perhaps a compressor map of the turbo from K-tec may help here...

Subject: Carb freezer

Question:
Hi wiz , wot does carb freeze mean exactly , do you put it in the fridge cos of sell by date, can you explain and how the devil do you deal with the pesky chap?????, cheers , enlighten me master please , cheers mate , matt,Bristle.

Answer:
matt you ph 1 arch buying fiend wink carb freeze is where the fuel doesnt vapourise properly in the air into the engine. the engine starts to stutter and sometime die. see you actually need alittle heat in the air to vapourise the fuel. the carb atomises it..i.e into small droplets, but the heat in the air is needed to turn it into a vapour... which is why there is a hot water supply to both the manifold and the carb base....
you follow?
this is usually caused by cold foggy air being sucked into the turbo, and then being cooled down through a large efficiently placed intercooler. this then causes carb freeze, as its too cold to vapourise the fuel effectively in the engine.

Question:
alright wizard thanks for answering all my other questions. the ktec ktr 180 turbo it says in there catalogue its good for 20psi does that mean 20psi is its max and u shouldnt run it at 20 psi for to long or could i constantly run it at 20psi ive tried ringing them but i never get through i really want a turbo that can handle a constant 20psi any suggestions

Answer:
if its good for 20psi, then its good for 20psi.you aint gonna run 20psi for more than a 30secs to a minute tops, unless you really start giving it the beans down the motorway.... and then i bet the car lets go before the turbo does.....

Subject: harsh ride

Question:
hi wiz i have a ph2 gt turbo at standard height all round. when ever going over even the slightest bump it sends enormous shudder and loud bangs and vibrations through the whole car. I drove a friends r5 which had just been lowered and standard shocks etc and it was smooth with no bangs or vibrations. I am going to replace the shocks, springs and lower to 35 mm.would the new shocks help or is it something else.Sorry for the essay im just stuck. Thank you very much wiz.

Answer:
firstly do the bounce test to see if the damping action of the shocks are workin!
check to see that your wishbones can actually move where they are attached to the subframe!
then take the suspension tops apart to see if they are still inone piece, as these make a terrible klunk over rough terrain.

Subject: brake servo

Question:
Hello,
I am on my third brake servo. I have changed the master cylinder but am still getting leaks and hissing from the pedel.
What else could it be ?
Cheers

Answer:
Assuming you've bled the system completely, and there's no obvious leaks on the brake cct, have a look at the one-way valve on the back of the inlet manifold that feeds the brake servo. It should only blow one way; ie, from servo into the engine (vacuum).

If it's blowing both ways, it could be that it's pressurising the servo (when you're on boost) and creating the hissing noise that way.
