Subject: baring caps

Question:
the baring caps for the big ends have been mixed up what can i do is there a way to rematch them from the markings on them please help

Answer:
sorry to say this buddy, but you are an idiot! harsh words but this could cost you alot of money to sort out!!!
you should have marked them with a punch first on the rod and the cap to indicate where they go!

see if i were in this position, i would first of all check the bearings, assuming you aint removed them. place the caps and rods together so that you can hopefully see a wear mark that tells you that they belong together. if you have removed the bearings, then look at the side of the cap/rod where they bolt together, there are always wear markings there.
also, if you clamp them onto the crank and start to tighten them up, they should still be able to turn when tightened to 45Nm. if they are tight as they approch this torque setting then they are mis matched. they could also be too loose as well (but unlikely). unfortunately if you do tighten the big end up and it pinches the crank then you will have shagged the new bearingsthat you have got, as they become pinched.

if you still cant tell which is which then look at it this way. you have to get a new set of pistons, and a 2nd hand set of rods with matching caps, and get them pushed on. ouch!!!!

Subject: head gasket

Question:
ok i think the end plate head gasket has gone, went to replace it and two of three have snapped and are stuck in the head

Answer:
can get away with using alot of sealant and clamping down with other bolts. either that or take head off and get them tapped and drilled!

Subject: Single Wiper Conversion

Question:
Hello, can you please put an article or simple instructions on how to fit one of these single wiper conversion kits please? thanks alot. Sam

Answer:
i would advise not putting one on the car. have you ever been in a car with a single wiper conversion when it starts to rain heavily? some citroens have them as standard, i own one, and its shocking!!! i also had a 5 with one on, and that was ultra crappola too!!

but if you really wanted too id try and contact storm wipers or someone like that and see if they would fax/email you an instruction set.

Subject: heater resistor pack

Question:
Having trouble changing this part can you advise me on the best way to do this job?

Answer:
either dash off and centre console out, or....

if you take out the heater fan in the scuttle tray, you can see the resistor under the black grill off to the drivers side of the car.... maybe you can cut the black plastic and get easy access to the unit.....

Subject: Running Rich Pt 3.

Question:
Took the elbow off like you said, left it running for a good 5 minutes, no dripping onto the throttle plate.
Cheers.

Answer:
ok....does your car still run the standard breather system, or have you blocked off the manifold one way valve feed? if standard this would cause an air leak at idle and make the mixture weaker. how about the lower carb feed to the actuator circuit? - blocked that off too? - that is a leak too...see where im going with this?

Subject: Heater fan problems

Question:
Hello, when I start the car with the car cold the heater fan doesn't work at all. After five minutes or so it will suddenly start or if I play with the switch a bit it might start, any ideas what could be causing this? Normally when I go back to the car later that day it will work fine straight away. If you think it might be the switch connections please can you give me some advice on how to get the switch out. Many thanks.

Answer:
take the fan out of the housing in the scuttle tray and clean up the connections that it clips into. this may help it!

Subject: heating pt 2

Question:
to follow on from my other msg about the heating thing, the heater blows out hot air when you are stood still and are not driving around so i come to believe that my heater is ok.could it be to do with the fact that the rubber which is on to of engine bay nearest window is missing hence drawing cold air in to the heater blower? if so would putting one of those covers which go all the way across the top and over the batt help? were would i be able to purchase one of these covers or do you have to make them yourself? thanks for your help and time paul

Answer:
see previous answer. put the thermostat back in.
the cover stops water dripping through the fan and leaking into the car. renault may still sell them.

Subject: thermostat

Question:
hi,sorry to bother again.but what thermostat,im new to r5's the person before me must have taken it out if that is the case.where abouts is it located thanks for your time paul

Answer:
the thermostat is located in the top hose next to the waterpump. there should be two jubilee clips next to each other. one to hol the pipe onto the waterpump, and the other to hold the thermostat in the pipe.
the pointed end goes towards the pump!!

Subject: main jet

Question:
Hey Wizard,

I was wondering if I might need a larger main jet for my 5 GTT. For specs and more information about my car, check my profile. I'm running about 14 psi now and I think my car is running a little lean. Do I need a larger main jet and/or different air correcting jet (or other jets??). And to what pressure can I safely crank up the boost then? Thanks in advance!

Answer:
does the carb have a standard venturi?

Subject: overfueling?

Question:
running a raider- with grp A carb conv. - however recently my 5 has started to sound very spluttery(like a diesel) and at idle&low revs smells petrolly.
does this sound like overfueling or running rich?
the grp A carb conv is quite recent...Also worth noting is that the 5 ceases sounding spluttery and smelling of fuel when revs are picked up. any advice? are these symptoms of running rich?

Answer:
check timing sensor wire, and check cap and rotor.

Subject: dump valve

Question:
alright wiz?
my dump valve seems to be silent now? but slightly hissing when the car is idleing. could this be the diapraghm?
cheers mate.

Answer:
Sounds like the diaphragms split. I'd replace it sooner rather than later as this will also be causing a boost leak when under load (which aint good for the turbo)

Subject: Small Hole

Question:
Hi wiz, just got my turbo back from repairs, an noticed they gave me a new adapter for the oil feed that goes on top of the turbo. the thing is is that the hole that goes through adapter is only about 1mm big.

Do u think its big enough, they have said to the tuner who it went through, (wen sent bak) that it was big enough???

Answer:
some turbos dont like too much flow/pressure through them and they have restrictors in the top of them. ill probably get all sorts of smart a***s telling me different now. but if the turbo manufacturer says its ok, then it must be ok.
but for gods sakes follow their instructions!!!- especially new oil and filter!!! even then you will probably not have a leg to stand on if it goes pop frown

Subject: Farting type noise

Question:
i could hear a funny noise comming from my carbon air intake kit so i started looking for where it was coming from i have now narrowed it down to be coming from a a valve that comes out of the back of the inlet mainfold and onto the breather pipes the noise sounds like a wiered vibrating noise or a bit like its farting could you give me an idea of what it is and how it may be cured? Cheers Kris.

Answer:
you should have a 1.7mm restrictor in the pipe from the manifold to the T piece. then from the T piece to the air filter there should be a 7mm restrictor.
this should sort your sucking problem out.

Subject: turbo thanks an noise

Question:
hi thanks again for advise on the car as in the turbo i will try and adjust the boost up to 14 psi and try it out.before i do that i have to sort out a problem i am having with my car.if i put it in to reverse and move backwards i here a clunk noise then when i set of to go forwards it clunks again louder would i be right in thinking that my engine mounts are f**kd? thanks again paul

Answer:
Could be engine mounts, could be a driveshaft/cv joint knocking, or more than likely it's something in the front suspension setup that's failed.
