Subject: white cream in oil cap

Question:
my 5 has been playing up for a couple of weeks now..ie...misfiring and wont tick over just stalls
a month ago i fitted a brand new turbo which is only oil fed..and a ktec group a carb with a 150 main jet but i never got the carb set up( bit silly really) put new fully synthic oil in new oil filter and new plugs...the old plugs i took out where red on the core end( dont know what that means)friday just gone i took the idle jet out and gave it a clean still no joy...took oil cap off white cream in there...had a look in header bottle and it looks like blue milk colour a bit cloudy...im running 12psi and the head gasket is std...when i start it up in the mornings i get a bit of white smoke for a couple of seconds but thats it...and some times on full boost get something coming out the exhaust put cant tell what it is...it doesnt like smoke but not sure...hope thats not to big of a question...please advise...martin

Answer:
time for a compression check. you need to see if you have a blow gasket or summat! if thats ok then look at the fact you are running 12psi on grp a carb, and it is probably chucking in loads of fuel, when you dont really need it. the ticking over and stalling could be due to shite in the carb- so that may need cleaning out.

Subject: Head gasket !!!!!!!!!

Question:
I am in the process of changing my head gasket and i did a compresion check, i started at the end near the water pump and got 1=100 2=91 3=98 4=96 do these seem normal or are these figures bad ?? Havent got head off yet as there seems to be a bracket from the down pipe to the back of the head.

Answer:
they seem very low. some peoples engines can be as low as 120psi, others its 150psi. check your liners for excessive wear when you have it apart. also maybe worthwhile actually taking the valve out the head and lapping them in, just incase they are burnt out.

Subject: i broke it :-(

Question:
hi i changed the plugs in my car the other day and cross-threaded no 1 :-( but i have got a head to swop it with i am going to get a gasket kit 4 it bit i want to know wots the best head gasket to get is were from i ran about 18 psi max. and the troqu setting for 12.9 head bolts and the valve clearence is for the car the head is standed sorry about the story thanks darryl

Answer:
rethread number 1 with a thread chaser.... saves alot of hassle!!!
if that dont work and you really need to change the head.....just get the grp 'a' uprated gasket everyone gets from tuners wink
the torque settings for 12.9 bolts are the same as normal ones.- 60Nm standard- some people take them to 70 or more. valve clearance- just use standard 8 and 10 thou of an inch - as it says in haynes manual.

Subject: boost

Question:
on a standard boost guage what does the single bars stand for ?

Answer:
no idea mate- as rough guide O of TURBO is 7psi. B is 10psi. but you really need an aftermarket gauge as the original gauges are getting alittle inaccurate these days.

Subject: starting

Question:
i have trouble starting my gt when its hot is this due to the starter motor being hot if so what can i do to stop this

Answer:
does the car click and not turn over?
renault did build a heatshield over the starter motor for this very reason.....
or maybe you should wrap the manifold/ turbo and turbo pipe in heatwrap so heat dont mess with your starter?

Subject: Actuator Piping

Question:
Hi,

I used to run a single port actuator on my old Turbo, I have just purchased a new turbo and it has come with a twin port actuator. It's been a few years since I disconnected the old twin port actuator and have forgotten how to pipe it up.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:
You can still run it in single pipe config' if you want? Just plumb the piping to the front most port (nearest the radiator) on the actuator.

Subject: ECU

Question:
Hi,

Just looking through the Q/A page and noticed people talking about the GTT ECU. I have an H reg GTT, which has an ECU, is the only way to change the timing by purchasing one form BBT? Or can you get these re-programmed by someone?

Also last time a had the car running, I was running 18psi (at intake elbow) of boost on a Europart's Grp A carb, cam , headwork and a MD84 hybrid turbo it made 187.6bhp @ wheels would you suggest I need the above as the engine didn't do more than about 4000miles before I had 3 oval looking pistons.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:
The ecu (or to give it it's correct name, the aei) itself isn't adjustable, but the ignition timing can be altered via the tdc sensor on the gearbox. They're not adjustable as std, but nothing that 2 minutes in a vice, a hairdryer, and a rubber mallet can't sort big grin

Once fitted, you can move the sensor to the right (towards bulkhead) for more ignition advance or to the left (towards the radiator) for more ignition retardation.

Question:
Hi wiz , in the words of a crackin totty pop singer ""im torn"".
Which is the better intercooler???, the k-tec fm or the cyber conversion by gt tunning , i think i may be dictated to by the fact i have a gtt evo bumper , please can you tell us if this is the case and suggest which might be better and for whatever reason , ohh an ps can you stop it bloody raining???, cheers , matt in bristol , one soaked to the bone tree surgeon.

Answer:
If Natalie umbongoulia was typing this, she'd request you put the kettle on, grab some choc'y digestives, hit the 'search boards' link, type in 'front mount intercoolers' or 'fmic', and have yourself some happy ready for an hour or so.

In fact, spookily enough, that's exactly what the Wizard recommends as well...but that's where the similarities between el Wizo and Australia's finest ends! wink

Subject: Water pump

Question:
Hi wizard, can you tell me how will i know that my water pumps knackered, i have the head off the car and the pump is covered in a white type moss. The last thing i want to do is put it back together and the pump pack up.

Cheers Matt

Answer:
You'll know when the pump is knackered as there won't be any water flowing around the cooling system! smile

You could try cleaning the pump/blades, but to be honest if it's rotating, doesn't leak externally, doesn't squeal, and water is circulating normally, I'd be inclined to leave well alone...Or for the sake of £30/£40, bin it, and invest in a replacement pump.

Subject: Help me!!!

Question:
Basically I just bought a r5gtt, the head gasket was gone. So I happily sent it to KTEC they fixed the problem also sorting the rear breaks, new bearings, wheel balancing, grp a carb, new steering u joint, 2 new tyres, new copper rad, low temp switch amongst other things costing me 1600 bucks. I drove the car home 2 day to swindon arond 50 to 60mph (as i didnt want to f*** it). every time i stop the car doesnt idle it just dies even with the clutch down (is this meant to do this,? this is my 1st r5gtt) then i drive to my fiancees house and along the way the near side front wheel decides to fall off after KTEC couldnt get it off as the locking key was missing. Does the car not idle when you take your foot off the accelerator??? Help me!!!!!!!!!

Answer:
Sounds like the idle jet could be blocked, but either way, you should really be phoning k-tec and voicing your disatisfaction at them seeing as they're the ones who have been working on your car.

Explain the various problems and see what they recommend.

Subject: running rich

Question:
Alrite, i cant get my car to run anything other than very rich. I've tried cleaning the carb out, the mixture screw is screwed all the way in and i've put my standard jets back in but still no joy. I'm temped just to chuck my carb in the bin and get another one. Do you think getting a whole new carb will fix it or could something else be causing the problem ? Cheers

Answer:
Screwing the mixture screw all the way in is in fact making the idle c.o leaner/weaker.

Take it to ya local m.o.t place, drop the operator some beer tokens and ask him to set the mixture screw to give a 1.5% c.o (or there-abouts) mixture setting @ idle.

Then see how it idles.

Subject: white smoke

Question:
hi wiz it has got very cold recently and this morning when i started the five for about 5 mins there was huge amount of white smoke pouring out.
After it had warmed up it stoped and didnt do ti when driving or stopping etc. I think i might have seen a bit of bluey smoke on start up so have checked for oil in pipes but is bone dry as i just put a brand new stg2 turbo. So what can cause this. Can it be condensation?
If there is blue smoke which is hardly ever what can this be ? thanks

Answer:
Got it in one - Condensation.

Subject: pops

Question:
hi wiz again.i changed my turbo to a new stg2 t25 turbo technics hybrid a month ago and althogh the scorpion3' souunded nice and did rumble with the standard turbo it now pops and bangs and seems much louder even at low revs. Although it sounds better is this a problem if so what kind. Thanks mighty wiz.
By the way what is a sign of a leaking manifold or manifold gasket and does it affect performance. Thanks again.

Answer:
It could be that there's a leak present in the exhaust system, be it the manifold, turbo elbow, downpipe, etc, which is allowing air in, thus creating the popping on over-run.

Could also be that your idle mixture is v weak and that the now more flowing exhaust housing is bringing that issue to light.

Basically, if the car is running ok and you don't mind the popping, carry on with your life and enjoy driving the car.

Leaking manifold/gasket will make the engine sound 'ticky' at idle/pulling away, and if the leak is sufficient enough it'll lose gas drive to the turbo, hence lack of power.

Subject: pinking?

Question:
hi wiz just fitted an in car boost controller
drove it the other evening and was getting a tinkling noise as she came on boost (4psi) in 4th and 5th, found the dv diaphram had a small hole took it out and the noise stopped but now wen i turn up the boost (15psi at manifold) its tinkling wen i giv it the boot have re jetted the carb wit the jet that came wit the adjustor. Is this pinking and if so wats the best way to combat it,cant go to an RR as the nearest one is 4hrs away, run unleaded fuel and duno how much super unleaded is available round here ,pls help i dont wana break her!!! P.S sory bout the essay, cheers DAVE

Answer:
Ok, 2 ways round it.

You could try super unleaded fuel and see if that gets rid of the det'ing, or hit me back with your carb's jet spec and we'll see if that can be improved upon.

Subject: running rich pt2

Question:
Hi, in reply to your last answer i've took it to an m.o.t place. Thats where the new miture screw was wound all the way in, to try and make it leaner. It idles fine at 900rpm but still with a very rich c/o level even when screwed right in. Any ideas? Thanks

Answer:
Whip the carb elbow off, start the engine and let it idle - Peer down the venturi and see if any fuel is dripping onto the throttle plate (you might have to wait a couple of minutes). If so, get back to us smile

Subject: Locking Nuts

Question:
Hi Wiz,
I Have lost the key for my locking nuts and can't remember the make ,do you have any tips on how to remove them

Thanks

Answer:
A few ways...

Try banging a suitable sized socket over the locking bolts and see if you can persuade it off that way.

You could try welding a bolt or nut to it, if possible, and extract it that way.

Or grab a powerful drill, a few decent meaty drill bits, and drill the head off.

Question:
hi wiz ive just bin intouch with my engine man and he has said that i need a steel crank if im going to runn more then 250 bhp. is he pullin me leg or am i going to have to fork out more money.
cheers wiz

Answer:
Do you plan on running a genuine 250bhp? If so, you'll be doing well to crack that, reliably, with a carb in place and no NOS.

Either way, std crank is upto the job anyway...

Question:
hello wizard i was just curious to as weather the anti perc fan would still operate in the cold weather we have been having?

does it have like a temp swith of some kind to tell it to work?

your rich

Answer:
It'll work in any weather as it's operation is dependant on whether the carb base or turbo heatshield sensors trigger.

Subject: liners ?

Question:
hello again im about to change my head gasket after doin a commpression check my friend said that they split liners aswell how do i check this? if one has split r they easy to replace as im a begginer do they just slide out ? thanks

Answer:
Clamp the liners down/in place and crank the engine so to put the piston at the bottom of its stroke, then check the liner wall for crack(s).

If a liner has gone, whip the sump off, undo the relevant big-end cap, and pop the piston & liner out the top.

Question:
hey wiz,
im having alot of wrk dun to my engine, litened balanced head work big turbo ect ect. totaling £3000. without dressing an stuf. how much power will i create reliably, as will b every day car. thanks dude

Answer:
well, key words here are 'big turbo' -how big? - t28/t25 size? if so then easily 200bhp@ 20psi, but i would advise running 15psi everyday, as you clutch and gearbox will start to suffer eventually. 20 psi for special occasions wink

Subject: oil pressure

Question:
hi, help is required. my engine is running sound untill the turbo is half way up the guage. normally around 2800 revs ish. then i lose oil pressure. bottom end sounds fine. any ideas?

Answer:
check to see if the turbo bearings are ok, by doing the shaft wobble test. it maybe that its bolloxed and as the shaft spins up it starts to wobble, and hence lets oil pass it easily.
or it could be a dodgy oil pressure gauge!!!- do you have an aftermarket one fitted?

Question:
hey mr wizard im thinking of ditching my standard turbo i just bought and getting k-tecs ktr 180 hybrid i have a spider valve fitted with in car boost adjuster gttuning rejetted my carb to suit this. will i still be able to lower the boost on the hybrid to below standard and run around 20 psi on full boost will the carb be able to handle that boost as i dont know what size jets gttuning fitted thanks sorry for the essay cheers bud

Answer:
yes, the hybrid won't effect the boost you can run on it. it will be more efficient than the t2 and hence give you more power for a given boost...in theory.

Question:
Can i run a big front mounted intercooler when im running standard boost.

Answer:
yes, but the boost may appear to come on alittle later as you will have that front mount to fill up with compressed air first. its worth doing though smile
