Subject: smoking

Question:
hi, ive bought a new 5 gt, it smoked quite bad after a hour or so, when i got home i changed the breather pot on the right hand side of the engine, its made it alot better but i puffs out a bit of blue smoke when the fan cuts in, any ideas, Cheers Ben

Answer:
check the turbo for play. are you sure its not leaking oil onto the manifold? and the fan aint blowing the smoke backwards?

Subject: gasket change

Question:
hello there i was woundering my head gasket and turbo have blown would i be able to change these myself as a beginner i have the parts how hard is it to change these

Answer:
headgasket aint that hard, and once you have the head/manifolds/turbo off in one lump, then you can take the turbo off easily. only problem you may face is remembering where all the pipes go. solution is to get some paint/tippex/tyreARTpen and label the hoses as you take them off. if you follow haynes manual to the letter, it will take around 5 hours!- but they tell you to do some long winded stuff. also search the boards as there is plenty of info on this!

Subject: Banging and stuttering

Question:
Hi wizard,
Got a real headach from my car and thought you could help.
When driving my car everything is fine, untill you nail it or create a 100% load , then the car stutter's real bad and try's to back fire.
When i first had the car the exhaust had a big hole in and it used to back fire and stutter on heavy load.
When it does this it briefly puts on the battery light in time with the stuttering.

I've changed the TDC lead, new carb, new standard exhaust and even dissconected the overboost wire's.

Its running on super unleaded fuel.

Any help would be good what do i change next??

Thanks TommyB phase 1 turbo

Answer:
check that the main live from the battery aint touching the back of the block or exhaust where it joints the starter motor!!! if that aint it, check to see that your manifold gasket is ok, this can cause probs if its letting fuel/air into the exhaust!

Subject: More PSI!!

Question:
HI wiz
I just had my car engine rebuilt from total standard except the exhaust and airfilterwhich were already on. It now has a steel liners new pistons, race cam some head work, group a carb, group a fuel pump, goup N clutch, double cap intercooler and a T3/T28 turbo. It drives brilliant nowand i have a couple of questions for you:
the turbo is a little laggy it spins up at around 3500 and at fulll boost around 4500, what would you do to make it spin up a bit quicker? I have ordered a BB tuning downpipe but is their anything else?
I have an in car adjustble boost which when close runs around 14psi and when fully open it runs about 23psi(after carb), how can i increase the boost as the turbo is capable of around 40?
Also is water injection worth buying?
would a front mounted intercooler be good or bad?
sorry for the novel but i hope you can answer them
Many thanks MP..

Answer:
a side exit may make things better for the spool up side of things, but the size of the turbo will mean that it is laggy!- you could always try NOS to spool turbo up quicker!
water injection is always worth getting as is a front mount- the colder the air is, the less you will need to turn the boost up!
i wouldnt boher trying to turn the boost up to 40psi, and if you did want to, then i would speak to the person who built your engine to see if they recommend doing anything else to it, before you do!!

Subject: speedo not working

Question:
hi,
have an r9
the milometer turns but the speedo doesn't move, what could this be, have taken out the clocks and there doesn't seem to be a cable there where abouts under the bonnet do i need to check ie, switches, cables etc.
thanks

Answer:
it runs off an electric speedo. there is a creamy/white wire that comes from the sensor, which is situated below the starter motor- the wire runs across the top of the gearbox, there should then be a black connector, and then the wire should continue along the bulkhead and disappear into the car. on the back of the speedo unit in the car the 'speedo' wires are actually the three that attach to the lower middle of the unit.i.e its a 3 pin plug!

Subject: limiter/flames

Question:
Hi wiz, you say that a rev limiter can produce flames is this with a flamer kit or is it on it's own, if so how does it work? do you just have to rev high or what?
hope this makes any sense.

Cheers luke big grin

Answer:
Without a flamer kit.

Rev limiters cut the spark(s) momentarily, thus the unburnt fuel enters the (hot) manifold and ignites there, hence a flame can appear at the tailpipe that way.

Subject: starter motor removal

Question:
i have just started removing all the brackets and wiring with the drivers side wheel removed but i cannot see the bolt heads that hold the starter on? are all three? located at the opposite side of the gearbox? and what size are they? cheers in advance

Answer:
they are 16mm bolts, arranged in a triangle formation, accessible from the passenger side of the car. use a 20-30cm extension to reach under the turbo to get to them. one (the lower one!)is a pig to get to as it is only accessible with a 16mm spanner!!!

Subject: Removing the hot intake pipe from the old air filter

Question:
Hi Wiz

Ive just fitted a green air filter (induction kit) and a shiny heat shield, i removed the big old airfilter but left the L shaped pipe that gathers the hot air from the turbo from the old filter on, but when the cars running the pipe rattles against the heat shield making a very anoying sound! could you tell me how to take that pipe off without messing anything important up please smile

Thanx Jay

Answer:
just unbolt it. and put the nut back on whatever you took it off. it is only a pipe that 'directs' warm air to the original filter.

Subject: steering

Question:
Dear wiz iam deperate for your help the steering on my ph2 r5gt has been very very light to the point where i could turn with one finger. Then it started to go really stiff as i turn corners when it never did b4. Problem is i have taken it to two reputable garages and they havent got a clue what to do. i brought a uj and i was told i cant replace that part. Is that true with later models? mine is a h reg. Please please point me in the right direction sorry for the essay.

Answer:
the steering on the r5 gt should never be that light. i reckon you have got your car lowered and this has caused you camber to be altered, so that the car runs on the inside edge of the tread. if this is the case then, i would strongly suspect that you need to take the shock absorbers apart, and replace the rubbers, the bearings and the metal 'top hat' that all take a beating when you lower the car.- they take a beating anyway- and if the bearing aint turning properly, guess what makes it hard to turn.....

Subject: heater fan

Question:
can you help? ive got a renault 5 campus for everyday use whilst im rebuildin my turbo.

the heating in the car does not work and the fan that blows the cold air plays up when it feels like it. i have got another heater matrix with the wiring and fan, would it be worth swappin them over or can you suggest any other things i can check?

as i work shifts and its gettin near winter i need to sort this out.

thanxs wizard

Answer:
ahh..... mr bennett the parts wizard himself!!! wink
id suggest taking the fan out, and cleaning up the contacts first. eiter that or get a new fan from gsf etc etc. as for the heat thing..are the pipes connected to the heater matrix?- if they are and they are hot, then the flap that controls the hot air is not moving. so you will probably need to remove the heater control and see if that is broken, or somehow manually move the flap, so hot air blows constantly.... which is better than nothing!

Subject: hunting

Question:
hi my car is hunting at idle i think it might b an air leek but i have ckecked the boost pips and the intercooler but it is still happening but the pipe from the perck fan is missing on my car as the fan has bean removed from the car could this be the problem and it idles at 1500 rpm i dont know were to go next thanks darryl

Answer:
Hunting would indicate a leak below the venturi or a weak idle c.o mixture. Get your local garage/mot place to measure the c.o value and report back to Wizard HQ with your findings.

It should be circa 1.5%

Subject: steering pt 2

Question:
hi wiz in response to your answer the car is standard ride height has not been altered. The garage just told me that it is the rack itself which needs replacing could that be the cause for light and stiff steering.thanks

Answer:
yeah, it can affect the steering like that. just get it changed.

Subject: Valve clearances

Question:
Alright wiz
I adjusted my valve clearances to what kent cams recommended for the RT150 Camshaft which where 0.20 inlet and 0.25 Exhaust which I did fine and got my mate to double check the gaps, but it still rattles is head off and its getting on my tits. What do you reckon it could be? Cheers.

Answer:
i hope the figures you used were in mm and not thousands of an inch!!!
if its still rattling it could be alot of things..including worn gudgeon pins, knackered big ends etc etc.

Subject: what boost??

Question:
hey there thanks for all the answers to my other questions, ive got a standard replacement turbo what is the max psi i could run ive got a spider valve and rejetted carb and alloy intercooler and air filter and full stainless exhaust also a competition head gasket

Answer:
you can run the standard turbo over 20psi if you really wanted to, just dont expect it to last long. 15psi seems to be ok, for longevity and power. maybe 18psi at a push for short bursts.

Subject: Turbo change

Question:
Morning, gonna change me turbo for the first time soon. I've read the how to in the articles and it seems quite straight forward. My only questions are what new gaskets will i need ? And also do i really need to drain all the oil as i did a oil and filter change a month ago. Cheers

Answer:
you can use new gaskets if you want to, you may find that the turbo aint got any gaskets on at all though.- some people use them ,others don't. all are available from turbo remanufacturers.
i would change the filter and oil, as it will definately void the 'warranty' if you don't!!!

sup wiz,
how easy is it to remove the drivers seat and what do i have to do to do this ? pleaz matey

easy now bredren!!! you need to make sure that you av ze correct size TORX bit!!! slide the seat all the way backwards and then remove the front two bolts that hold it into the floor. then slide the seat all the way forwards and tilt the seat up, and undo the back two bolts that hold the runners to the floor. then push the seat back down and remove the seat and subframe by moving the seat slightly backwards- so you unclip the rear plastic mounts and lift out of the car!

Subject: Cutting out

Question:
Hi wiz.
The car idles really well, but when I boot it and then let it back to idle it cuts out straight away. This only happens when it is thrashed a bit and not when i drive it sensible. Cheers.

Answer:
have you cleaned the carb out recently? you may need to do this and check the carb diaphragms. also make the idle mixture a little richer and see if that helps.

Subject: Big oil leak

Question:
hi i have just bought my renault 5 gt turbo and it has just had an engine rebuild about 1500 miles ago. i noticed that there was alot of smoke coming from the exhaust after boosting mainly and sometimes on tickover i also noticed a lot of oil down the side of the intercooler and around the dump valve. finally my car just started missing and then packed up. i was told it was my turbo. so i have just gone out and bought a new turbo and fitted it but yet i still have the same problem it smokes and it misses and at the moment it will not run. i think this is because of oil in block? i have only done bout 7 miles with the new turbo.

if you kn ow of anything plz help me
Boultby

Answer:
you need to do a compresson check to see if the engine is ok. if you turbo has filled the intercooler with oil, then the engine may have wet the plugs.- take off the turbo hose to the carb, take the plugs out and clean them, put plugs back in the car and then spray some brake cleaner inside the carb top - BUT DON'T PUT THE HOSE BACK ON IT!! the car should start assuming there are no engine problems. if it does- drain the oil out of your intercooler and clean it out!!!
sorted
