Subject: emissions Question: Hello, me again. Different problem today. Put me new mixture screw in yesterday took it to the garage to get adjusted. The c.o started off really high, bout 9.4 then when screwed in as far it will go its still at 6.2. The geezer said the other readings wre okay. Standard-ish engine using a 130 main and 90-100 air corrector. Any ideas ? Also the accelerator is sticking at out 1500rpm unless i lift the pedal back up then it goes back to normal. Dunno if this is linked or something else i've messed up putting the carb back on. Cheers Answer: you need a stronger carb spring to return the throttle to its proper position. if you want a quick bodge to make the CO reading less then you need to create a manifold leak. try removing the breather pipe off the back of the manifold so it sucks through that for the MOT and then reconnect it after the mot. if that dont work then you will have to return some of the carb jets back to standard. |

Subject: Gearbox Question: Hi Wizard ![]() Okay was thinking of changing my 11 turbo gearbox for a 5 Gt Turbo one. What would the pro's and con's be on me fitting it to my 11 Turbo???? Would it be better for traction???? Cheers Answer: The 5t box has a slightly longer f/drive which means you'll get a touch more speed at a given rpm compared to the 11t box. It's not necessarily gonna be better for traction as that's a torque factor, not transmission. |

Subject: fuel pump stuff Question: Hi wiz, forgive me in in a geeky mood today..... I changed my standard, tired, fuel pump for an uprated bosch one, it all works fine, no problem. However I am aware that the standard fuel relay is prone to overheating and failing (correct me if im wrong!) Is the standard reno fuel relay and wiring up to running a bigger pump? ta Jono Answer: *sigh* i dont know anyone who has had problems. do you? in which case i think we can safelt assume that its ok. whowever, you may want to improve the wiring to it so the voltage/current frop to it is minimal, this will increase flow from the pump- but it maybe too much hassle

Subject: ajustable timing sensor? Question: hi wiz i have an adjustable timing sensor on my 5 and was wundering why it is their. may seem a silly question but when i had minis i timed the car up on the dissy like the 5 has, so what does it actualy do ? surly you can time it on the dissy ? and how do i use it to my advantage ? Cheers Answer: no you can't time it on the dizzy as the ignition unit decides when there is gonna be a spark. the dizzy just transfers that spark to the correct cylinder. you move the timing sensor toards the front of the car to retard it, i.e when you run big boost. or toward the rear of the car when you are running less boost and want the car to have more mid range punch. |

Subject: Group Question: Hi Wizard Do you happen to know where to get the information on modifying the inlet manifold on the 11 to Group 'A' spec like the Rally car had. I did have it but have misplaced and can't seem to find it on the site. Cheers Answer: The only real difference is the bottom of the inlet throat was rounded off/square edge removed as such. |

Subject: Removing Perc Fan Question: Hi Wiz, I want to remove the perc fan and all the stuff that goes with it because it doesn't work and I want to tidy up the engine bay. I have removed the valve and the hose that leads to the boost pipe and also the hose that feeds the valve. I am not sure what else I can remove, can you direct me to a picture showing a car with the perc system totally stripped out? Cheers Answer: there are two bolts under the drivers side wheel arch that hold the perc fan on. undo these (or snap them off in most cases!!) and the whole fan assembly will come off. leave the wiring to it cable ties to one side, and also keep the fuel line well away from the exhaust manifold - cable tie it if you have to!!! hope this helps. |

Subject: starter motor wont turn Question: after recently having a fire in the engine bay which took out the timing sensor and knock sensor i replaced them an everything else that got burnt but now when i try to start it the startor doesnt even try to turn. i thought there was only 2 wires actually needed for the startor to engage the trigger wire and main live? or could there be something else? cheers Answer: check to see that the trigger wire is actually seeing power when you turn the ignition onto the 'start car' position..... disconnect it from the solenoid, and put a voltmeter on it. should say 12V when trying to start...simple huh? also see that the large wires from the battery and the alternator are put on the same terminal!!! - i suppose you could say there are 3 wires..... 1 from alternator that goes down the front of the block, over the top of the gearbox and joinsa the back of the solenoid, 1 from the battery +ve that loops down from the drivers side and connects with the wires from the alternator, and the final wire that triggers the solenoid. hope this helps. |

Subject: Carb Jetting Question: Hi Wiz, I wasn't sure whether I had a standard or ""Group A"" carb so took off the carb elbow and saw ""25"" marked on the venturi and took that it was standard. I thought later that I should measure the venturi just to make sure and I have found out that the venturi is 28mm. I want to run between 18 and 22psi. What jetting will I need to run this kind of boost? Answer: 90 air corrector and 150 main are the usual sizes. |

Subject: Breather System ? Question: Hi wiz! Is the hose which fits to the back of the inlet manifold needed on the breather system, or can i block that hole on the manifold and fit filter to the oil breather pot top, as ive seen some members have done this?? THANX, DAZ... Answer: Yep, that's fine to do. You might find you have to re-adjust your idle screw setting, as the engine may idle slightly higher after blocking off that non-return valve. |

Subject: efi renault 5 turbo Question: hi is there any r 5 that has fule injetion i want to bild an engine and wont 2 know if there is any injetor rail that i can bolt strait on i think an efi turbo sound fun thanks darryl Answer: the only renault 5/9/11 with 1.4 engine with multipoint fuel injection was the renault alliance model sold in the USA. basically the same engine as the 5. the 5's sold over here only ever had the monopoint injection. so you may have to end up making your own, as the american manifold will be hard to get hold of. |
