Subject: super charging

Question:
has anyone ever done this to a 5??

How much was the overall costs and where they worth the performance they gave??

Cheers white wizard

Answer:
i dont know of anyone who has done this to 5. im not sure of the costs, but you can bet it maybe as expensive as a turbo. they do not give as much performance as you may think, as they actually sap power from the crank just to drive them. eg, a 500bhp mercedes kompressor...the supercharger saps 100bhp crank power just to drive it!!!!
also where would you put it?

Subject: oil pressure gauge

Question:
has anyone got a wiring diagram of the oil pressure system, as the gauge doesnt work, but it shows oil level on ignition. also my oil pressure light and water temp light fluctuate with the revs.. could there be a dodgy earth?
if so where, i'm not scared to re-wire it all, but could do with some colour codes, or pointers or something.
cheers wiz!!

Answer:
Have you checked the many wiring diagrams in the back of the Haynes manual?

Subject: not more power

Question:
hi wiz thanks for all your help. i just fitted a t25 hybrid[turbi technics] and got it rolling roaded with only 136 bhp,106 bhp wheel power and only 135 lb torque with 13 psi. When i had it rolling roaded at bb it put out 150bhp,127 wheel power and 175 lb tourque with15 psi please help as this is very dissapointing although the intercooler is battered. Thank you so much.sorry for the essay.

Answer:
different rolling roads use different methods of reading the power. some read low, some read high. best way is to goto a RR day and see what it goes like against some other members cars. you will then know if readings are up or down.
i.e dont worry.

Question:
had my turbo reconed about 3 mouths ago done a 1100miles on it at about 13psi then did not use car for 3 weeks. i turn engine over to get oil up befor starting it i left it running for about 10-15 min it started to smoke alittle i reved it big puff then it go's not took car for a run yet as probs with clutch could it just be where it sitting pluse need oil chage or is turbo gone again

Answer:
Hard to say.

What colour was the smoke? Is it continously belching out smoke or was it just a one-off when you rev'd it?

I'd drive the car and see what it's like first before worrying about having to change the turbo again or not.

Subject: Flowing the standard intercooler

Question:
Hello Wizard,

I've recently got hold of a 180 BHP hybrid turbo for my R5 GTT... so, of course, I want to crank up the boost pressure to (a rather safe) 16 psi. I could set it to 20, but first I have to change the jets. Anyway, I read that it's a good idea to strap and flow the intercooler. I know what strapping is and how to do it, but I couldn't quite understand what's meant by flowing the intercooler. Do I have to remove the thermostat completely? And where is that ""flap"" I have to glue in place? Thanks in advance!

Answer:
Take off the boost hoses and look into the intercooler - On the right hand outlet you'll see the thermostat, and on the left hand inlet you'll have a clearer view of the plastic flap (it'll probably be in the closed position; ie, covering the intercooler cores, as to divert the air straight to the outlet and not via the cores).

The easiest way is to remove the 'stat is with a pair of molegrips (twist it anti-clockwise whilst pulling on it), then you can either screw a suitable sized bolt back into the 'stat hole to open the flap fully, or you can insert a screw through the side of intercooler end-tank to hold the flap open that way.

The harder, but more efficient way would be to remove the end-tank from the core section altogether, remove all the 'stat assembly, and the flap, put a divider plate/wall between the inlet & outlet holes (so that the incoming boost air is forced into the core) then re-attach the end-tank to the core section.

Strap it all up with a meaty jubilee clip, make sure it's a good air-tight seal, and happy boosting! smile

Subject: perc

Question:
hi i have read some articles about the perc fan and from what i can gather the sensor for the car is on the pasenger side i can see it but there are no wires to it were should they be if i want to connect it up an also colours.i have found two abundant wires with spades on near the turbo? could these be them thanks paul

Answer:
Yep, that could well be the wires in question.

The perc-fan is triggered from one of two sensors - One sensor is located underneath the carb in the inlet manifold throat, and the other sensor is located in the turbo heat-shield.

Both sensors are wired up in parallel, so that which even sensor triggers first activates the perc-fan.

Subject: Lot of effort starting/ and cutting out when started

Question:
New to the GTT and was just wondering if you need to give it a little gas when starting. As mine is reluctant to start if I dont, or might there something up with my starter motor?

Also once started it somethimes cuts out if I dont keep the revs up, ok once warm.

Cheers
David

Answer:
sounds like your carb needs cleaning out. this would cause it to cut out once running. does it improve when the car is warm?

Subject: french electrics??!!

Question:
Hey Mr wizard,
Have you ever heard of this one before.
My batt light flashes on every now and then. Doesnt matter if the car is hot or cold.
The only time it stops is if the headlights are on, both dipped and full beam stop it from coming on.
The alt is 3months old and i have cleaned up all the connections around it. There doesnt seem to be a problem charging the batt, my windows and other electrics work fine.
Its annoying as the car is more or less healthy other than this????

Thanks

Answer:
Have you got the brown plug with 2 wires still going to the top alternator connection?

If so, cut off the wires, recrimp them with the correct sized spade terminals, and apply them directly onto the top alternator connection. That should do the trick smile

If not, start checking the engine bay earths for good contact.

Subject: Bad idling

Question:
Hi there wiz, I tried to adjust my C.O on my 5 but nothing was happening at all I even screwed the mixture screw right in and this had no effect on the C.O.
I know that the guy who had it b4 me rejetted the carb and said the air corrector was .9 and the main jet was either 130 or 150, is this the cause of the crap idle and no adjment?
cheers.

Answer:
does the car have an uprated cam in it? if so, there lies your problem.

Subject: Bad idling part2

Question:
Yeah it has got a Kent rt150, does this mean i wont be able 2 get any adjustment at all?

Answer:
RT150 isn't that bad, so you should still be able to get a decent idle c.o mixture.

Start checking for air leaks around the lower part of the carb, check the mixture screw has the o-ring still attached to it, also check the aei line isn't leaking (eg, dump valve diaphragm split), and that the lower carb gaskets are all intact.

Question:
Its ok once hot, its if the revs are not kept above 1500 - 2000 it will stall.

Answer:
Get the idle c.o mixture checked, just incase it's running on the v lean side.

Make sure the idle jet itself is free of crud.

Subject: STuck in 3rd gear!

Question:
Hello mate,

Got a problem with my transmission. Around 6 months ago it developed a problem where it would feel like the selector was out of position and i would only get 3rd and 5th gear. To sort this problem i used to just put the stick int the neutral position and wiggle it from side to side to release it. The problem went away until yesterday where everything seemed to be normal when i stopped the car and turned it off......when i got back in the car and tried to select reverse i got 3rd instead. I thought i was having a bad driving day and tried to re-select reverse again only to find it was stuck in 3rd. I already knew the box wasn't in the best shape of it life as it was starting to whine in most gears. Do you think the box is dead or is there a short term solution to this problem???

Thanks Wizard

Adam

Answer:
It could be the 'box that's finally given up the ghost, or it could be that the selector rod is now completely bent out of shape, or possibly an engine mount has worn/gone altogether causing the engine to sit pissed, hence hard to shift it in gear that way.

Subject: t25 part 2

Question:
ive blocked the pipe off but i have not put anything between the metal but it shoud still boost better then that

Answer:
If you're sure it's sealed well enough, start checking the boost cct for leaks - Boost pipes, loose jubilee clips, split intercooler, leaking dump valve diaphragm (if fitted), carb elbow secured on properly, large o-ring under carb elbow is in place, etc.

Subject: rear bearings

Question:
hey SparkieMonster

how often do rear bearings go on the old five.... considering i bought them from GSF about a year and a half ago..... because they have gone again..... I bought them in a complete set with the bearings in the disc already..... are they just cheap, or should i get proper renault ones????

Answer:
the ones fitted are probably corteco variety, which are a pretty good make. if you are in any doubt then maybe best to get renault ones. but i should add that excessive vibration due to your very low back end may be making things break quicker.

Subject: engine transplant

Question:
Ive been told a renault 21 turbo engine could b squeezed into a 5 with a they mods, are the weight to performance mods worth the hassle?

Answer:
Probably not, no.

If you're thinking of transplanting an engine, have a look at turbo'ing & fitting a 16v unit from a clio/williams/R19, as they seem to be gaining a fair bit of interest these days.

Subject: what will fit

Question:
can you tell me if any other manufactuer wheels will fIT A RENAULT??

Answer:
technically no...due to the fact that the renault's use a 60.1mm central bore hole. other cars such as the bmw e30 and most older VW's use the same 100mm PCD arrangment, but their cenral hole is smaller...unless the wheel has a spigot ring that can be replaced, so that it fits correctly. gotta keep an eye on offset too.

Subject: Won

Question:
Hi, the other day my car ran out of petrol, (or so i thought), so i have put about 12 litres back in but it still won't start. The fuel pump wasn't pumping so i bought a new one. Still nothing. I've tested the fuel pump by putting a straight supply to it and it works, but when i put a multi-meter on the power cables from the lume, it only reads 0.07 volts. Ive have changed both relays, (the one next to the fuse box and the one in the rear doorcard)and still nothing. Also when i put the straight feed to the pump and try to start it, it still won't run because there is no spark. I have also tried a new coil. It has well and truly baffled me and would be gratefull of any advice thank you. Could there be any relation between the fuel pump and ignition spark not working?

Answer:
renew the timing sensor and lead. without a signal from the engine to the ignition unit, there will be no spark or fuel pump action!!!

Subject: Fibreglass Bits

Question:
Hi,
Can you tell me if anybody stocks fibreglass front wings, I know TAS did in 2002 ?
I also want to know if anybody stocks or even builds fibreglass doors ?
Any help would be very usefull.
Thanks Harvey.

Answer:
There was a couple of people on the boards earlier in the year who said they could sort fibreglass items, but it all came to nothing...or they were too expensive that no-one took interest.

Have you tried yell.com ?

Hi, do you know what the two wires are for that go to a 19mm brass thing that comes out of the manifold. Passenger side just under the carb stud. And what will happen if i've connected them back on the wrong way round. Cheers

Answer:
jamie, nothing will happen, it is an antiperc fan sensor. its just a thermo-switch.
