Subject: Engine rebuild? Question: Looking for some advice, i have a spare engine and 2k to spend. I have been offered a fully rebuilt engine (by bbperformance) with lots and lots of goodies (ceramic coated pistons, knife edged crank e.t.c) Do i rebuild the spare engine myself or buy the other 1? Just for your info i already have ktr180 turbo, forge front mount intercooler, changed carb jets but cant remember what size they are (from k-tec), uprated h/gasket, group N clutch and 16psi of boost. To make this more confusing i could just spend 2k on engine that is in car at the moment? (92k without rebuild) Answer: why would someone sell a rebuilt engine by bb? thats the question you have to ask yerself.... if you rebuild it yerself, you can learn more about the engine, and probably save money too. but if running around to different engine places id a problem then it maybe better to get the bb engine... |

Subject: gearbox Question: Hello Wizard, I might be having problems with my gearbox, so I'm looking for a replacement. I came across an add for a Renault gearbox, type JB3027, which came from a 1722 GT, type 21 (???). Do you have any idea of that would fit on my GTT? Answer: as its a jb3 box it will fit.... but if it doesnt have an electronic speedo you may have to use a the clocks out of a gtx r5 which use a cable drive. |

Subject: boost sensor Question: I've replaced all my hoses with silicon ones but the boost hose dosn't have the conection for boost sensor, i asked bbpt why and what to do with wiring and they said they can supply with fitting but recommend not having it for performance benifits cos they more likely to leak. this is all good but i still need to know what to do with wires, do i connect them together or chop them off and insulate ends? Answer: Just insulate the ends and tuck the wires away. |

Subject: over fuelling Question: hi wiz just bought my second 5 gtt and it seems to be over fueling. now the smoke seems to be a puff of black and abit of grey smoke when i rev the car gentle or hard. so is this definatley over fueling and wheres best to start to sort it out? the car is standard and running 14psi. and also when pulling off it some times just barely moves and seems to be flooding its self but once its going its fine. cheers alex Answer: maybe time to clean the carb out and fit a refurb kit. also check what jets are in it! |

Subject: Annoying buzzing Question: When im driving along and the revs get to 2 - 2500k theres quite a loud buzzy rattle that comes from the engine. I started to notice it when i would take my foot off the gas, in gear, slowing down from 3k+ revs. As it get to 2500 to 2k it starts this buzzing, less than 2k and it stops. Thought the vibrations at those revs were to blame but then tried dipping the clutch when the noise started and it stops!!? HELP!!! Cant find any loose parts/pipes. The engines quite standard. Cheers wizard. Answer: check the 1) bellhousing cover. 2) the front stabilisation bar. 3) the exhaust 'Y' clamp where it joins the back of the block. 4) the gearbox-engine steady bar 5) the bar that goes from the exhaust manifold to the 'Y'clamp at the back of the engine.... all maybe loose and rattling. |

Subject: Full Respray? Question: Its gonna vary a bit but how much should i expect to pay for a same colour respray. Had quotes of £2000 and upwards. Seems a bit dear to me, was hoping for something about £1500. Anyone had a good respray @ a reasonable price? thanks Answer: It's the old cliché saying, you only get what you pay for. Best bet is to ask around where you live for any decent local sprayshops and see what feedback you get that way, and of course, you could always ask on the boards as well, as there's been plenty of R5's etc resprayed over the years. |

Subject: fuel pump not workin Question: just taken my dash out and tryed to start it and the fuel pump dont work anymore ??tryed taking a live to it and the pumps ok and so is the relay when i tested it, is the ok to hard wire it with a switch and can i do it with out a relay? thanks mate Answer: You can hard-wire it if needs be, but use a relay as it draws a fair whack of current. Put the switch on the 'coil energise' side of the circuit. Be wary though, as by wiring it up that way means the fuel pump will run continuously - Not good if you have an accident and fuel is constantly being pumped through! |

Subject: over boost sensor Question: hi wiz the over boost sensor on the pipe going to the intercooler do you know where the other end of the wires go and are they really necessary Answer: They go to the relay which sits next to the aei - If the overboost switch is activated, it triggers the relay, which kills the ht spark momentarily. It's there as a fail-safe to protect the engine should the turbo start over-boosting (factory-set threshold is around 16psi), but people remove the switch/disconnect the wires once they start upping the boost from standard levels. |

Subject: Mileometer and thin Air.... Question: My Mileometer seems to be working intermitently, I have read through the Haynes manual with no luck. I also live in a French Ski resort , Tignes which is at 2100 m above sea level , there seems to be a turbo lag , is this just due to the thin air , or is there anything i can do as the switch back roads dont seem to be getting a real pasteing. Thanks for you help. Answer: Check the speedo connection (plugs are located on the airbox bracket) and also on the back of the dash clocks (it's the plug with 3 wires - An earth/bare wire, a red wire, and a white wire). As for the lag, it could be to do with your location above sea level, but what turbo are you running as well? |

Subject: Methanol Fuelling??????? Question: Okay bored at work and was wondering whether adding a certain percentage of methanol to the fueling (5/10/25/50 %)would have any results. As it's price is the same per litre as petrol Would it cause any short/long term damage to the engine????? Cheers Wizard Answer: it acts as a octane booster....can't remember what the RON rating is off the top of my head, but it does work. try 5% first and then work your way upwards...be careful though it dries the bores out as it is a very effective degreasant, and may cause premature engine wear in high doses... |

Subject: how much power Question: what is most power i can get from my standard 5 with out any internal mods and how cheers Answer: if you put on a t25/t28 turbo and have an after market exhaust. put the main jet up to a 140 assuming you have a standard carb, then turn the boost up to 19psi you will have around 190bhp. you can get well over 200 with standard head and internals.- but the clutch may start to slip very soon, if its standard! |

Subject: Puzzled???...wots not workin???? Question: Hi wiz , i turn on me 5 all the lights come on , batterys fine , starter motors nearly new , bin workin fine , on the final turn off key , nothing , turbo timer goes rapidly on / off and the thing dont start , any idea bud , could it be starter motor relay if so where is it , i can see what i think it is and it clicks so should be allright??!! , any ideas ohh grand master of these little buggers.Cheers , matt. Answer: Ahaaa, the clue there could be 'starter motor nearly new' - Did you put the dowel in the correct motor hole when refitting the starter motor to the gearbox? Are you getting a good 12v on the white solenoid wire when switching the ignition fully on? Also check the relevant engine earths are ok/making good contact. |

Subject: drip and leak Question: Dear Wiz The car is losing water, no obvious leaks or drips. Indide is fine, it's not the heater matrix. Fan etc works OK. Also, under radiator, in line with the 2 x oil cooling hoses always is a viscous oily drip. Car hardly uses any oil at all, i.e. it needs a top up every now and then, nothing dramatic and not frequently. I wonder if: a. the rad has an internal split, mixing water into oil, hence viscous drip which is more water than oil? b. the rad thread and oil hose nut are tight, but the underside of the hose nut is always wet, so maybe the thread or the hose are just shagged? c. the oil pressure hose just needs ptfe tape and the head gasket has gone? the water reservoir has slight froth, bit like a real ale pint, no mayo at all on dipstick or oil filler cap. No loss of power at all, no funny smoke, plugs ok (black because the car does city driving by darling wife (she blew up first engine, thank u very much). Car is bog standard, with original rad. Answer: how much water is it losing?- over what period of time? after a run, is there water pressure in the system?- or when you take the cap off does it just open with no hissing... the dripping oil hose may need a bit of PTFE....although the froth in the header tank may need further investigation.- start the car cold, and leave the header tank cap off... rev the car - does the water bubble abit? also is the oil in the sump creamy/green/beige opaque, and not translucent? -maybe you need to contact your area rep

Subject: which turbo Question: Thsnks for all your help wiz now as i have to replace turbo which one would you recommend.i wont to run 20psi plus also where would i get the best deal. Also will getting a double cap intercooler give more bhp. By the way will driving the car with oil coming through boost pipes damage the car. Thanks so much wonderful wizard of rtoc Answer: You're best bet is to have a search through the archives and take in advice from those that are running turbos at that level of boost. Click on the 'Search Boards' link, enter T25 turbo in the search fields, and that should get you off to a good start. Not really advisable to drive the car with oil seeping from the turbo, as for one thing it'll cause blue smoke to emit out your exhaust. Have you ever been stuck in traffic behind a car chuffing out blue smoke - Not pleasant is it! |

Subject: Servo Unit Question: Hi trying to get my car through its MOT lol. I have replaced everything as required and then some, namly; All four calipers All four hoses Master cylinder However, I still cant get decent pedal pressure on the road (can while sitting on drive engine off) due to an air leak somewhere around the servo. I can hear it hear when I press the pedal. Its also causing the car to run lean. Its not the servo-manifold rubber pipe, this is fine no leaks. I also fitted a new rubber seal around the master cyl between the servo unit and itself...then tightened up the two 13mm bolts. However, im still getting this leak, and it appears to be quite big because you can feel cold air pushing out from somewhere in that area, however with my fingers I cannot pinpoint the source! The master cyl I fitted was the closest to the original out of three I was given by my local factors (all supposedly for the 5GTT). However, even this one still had a slighty larger bore ram tube (that slides over the ram in the servo) than the orignal. I didnt think this would be a problem. Could this be the leak? I thought the point of the rubber o-ring around the base was to stop leaking... Bit confused, cant afford a new servo at £181+vat, especially if im not 100% my current servo cant be fixed. The bolts on the inside of the car/bake pedal area are all tight. Many thanks in advance! Answer: there are two one way valves.... one on the manifold, and one on the servo. you need to check they both work. you also need a pipe running from the manifold to the servo that WILL NOT COLLAPSE WHEN A VACUUM IS APPLIED TO IT!!! the one way valve that pushes into the servo has a rubber seal around it...check to see that the seal it AIR TIGHT!!! i doubt very much that the problem is with the water cylinder. when on the drive you will get vacuum from the engine...no boost at all. even if you rev it the engine pressure will just about get to 0. when driving and the turbo kicks in it will pressurise!!!- hence no servo action. check those one way valves! |

Aiiight! ![]() Ok, gonna need a bit more info on this one - Which area is the knocking originating from? Engine bay? Underneath the car? To one side of the car/engine? Is it a light tapping sound? A clonking sound? Intermittent or all the time? etc etc |
