Subject: Mega boost Question: When i run the car the turbo is making 25 psi and cracked a liner. All this is rectified now i need to turn boost to standard. There looks like quite abit of thread showing already from the actuator to the waste gate. Which way do i turn it and which way does the non return valve poitn on the boost pipes? Towards back turbo elbow or towards the carb? Cheers ps could it be the actuator and could i test it by disconnecting the wastegate and blowing down each pipe? Thankyou Answer: you need to make sure the actuator arm, just clips on the the wastegate lever....ie with the minimum of stretch!!! personally i would just do the cup mod and ditch the pipes you are on about..... |

Subject: turbos Question: i have 2 good turbos .whats the best way of storing them until i need em ? cheerz Answer: id squirt oil into the oil feed side, so it dripped out the return hole, and spin the centre shaft by hand, to get oil around the internals. then id put it in a plastic bag, so dust and crap cant get into it, and put one of the those moisture reducing silica gel pack in the bag with it. then keep it somewhere dry and warm. |

Subject: Rear Brakes Question: Hi wiz Now ive fixed the bearings im on to the back brakes, which dont seem to be working coz the discs are rusty and when i drive about they stay rusty, but the handbrake works, not really well but enough to stop the car with, which makes me think the calipers arnt seized, what do you think it could be? Ive read some of the other rear brake questions and the rear brake compensaters seem to be a likely culperite? if you think the same where do i find these beasts and is there a way to fix em ? thanx jay ![]() Answer: i know renault/gsf/eurocarparts sell the rear compensator ![]() if your discs are really rusty, you can cheat, and go round the block a couple of times with the handbrake on..... or even sand the rust off the discs with an orbital sander.... it does work a treat once the rust is off the disc, the braking should improve alot! |

Subject: instant power Question: if i got a new turbo(180bhp) would the bhp be added onto the orignal or does it mean that the turbo can handle up to 180bhp, cheers, also is there any different dumpvalve sounds i want something different buggsy Answer: the turbo can handle up to 180bhp. different dump valves have different sounds. diaphragm ones sound different to piston ones. it also depends on what boost, what turbo etc etc. its a pretty big subject! what are you looking for? |

Question: hi wiz, finally got me dimma up and running now but when im driving normal it steers fine but when i put my foot down and starts booosting it pulls me all over the road, any ideas???also when im driving it theres a load squeeling/whiningy noise, the faster i go the loader it gets, the noises goes with the note of the engine(if that makes any sence to ya)lol.....??????oh yeah you were right about me carb cheers mate.... Answer: It could be torque steer if you're running meaty power, or worn lower balljoints. The squeeling noise could be anything from a noisy water pump, to a dry dizzy gear shaft, to gearbox, to turbo prob's - Roughly where abouts does the noise originate from? |

Subject: Carb jets etc. Question: Hello Mr W, This is my set-up:- Standard carb. Hybrid t25 (18 PSI). Piper 285. Gas flowed head + larger valves. Matched inlet and exh' manifolds. Uprated fuel pump. Lightened and balanced bottom end. Alloy IC. Large foam air filter. Enlarged tubo elbow / downpipe and Side exit. How much boost should I be able to run on this set up (for short blasts, .25 miles etc) and roughly what jet sizes should I looking to install or a good starting point anyway. I think the main is 130 already with a standard air corrector. I had this set up at a well known R5 Tuner, but I only got 165 bhp @ the fly wheel which got me my a*** whipped by Collin in his Camp Arse running 10 psi. Respect always due! So I think that some times some tuners don't get the best out of your cars and it is down to a bit of trial and error. Any particular places to look on the site for more info? I'll get to enrichement circuits latter. Many thanks W. Answer: i doubt camparse was running 10psi.... but i bet colin would whip your a*** without a car in sight, if you asked him nicely ![]() without touching the enrichers, put a 140 main in and turn the boost up to 20psi. |

Subject: dumping when not moving Question: hello, i have a blitz blowoff valve and when i am at a stand still and rev it the blowoff valve does not go off. i have been told that its supposed to. when i'm moving it can go off at like 3000 revs. is this normal or is there a problem? thanks Answer: depends who you have been talking to. the ability to do a standing dump, besides being french, usually coincides with turbo size, what strength spring you have in the dumpvalve, and how powerful your vacuum is coming from your engine. i wouldnt be worried if your blitz aint going off. |

Subject: Idle Speed, Mixture and Choke Question: Wizardy Wizard! For a while now I have had idle fueling problems. I am running standard boost, on a standard carb. I have stripped and rebuilt the carb a number of times recently in an attempt to solve this problem. Today, rebuilt it with a new accel pump tap, new main jet, new air corrector jet, idle jet, and all new gaskets using the BB overhaul kit. First can I just clarify that I actually have a problem, as im not even sure there is one; When stone cold, it is difficult to start, using anything more than a tiny bit of choke angle, will kill it off, as if using far too much choke. When cold idle speed can only be maintained using a combo of choke and throttle, and can be steadied at about 1krpm (standard gauge). Now, when fully warm idle speed will have risen to around 1300rpm (again standard gauge reading). I cant figure this one out. I used the local garage's emissions tester, my idle co2 was at 5%, I adjusted this too 2% dead on. However, I am still having cold start probs. It is useless to drive the car when cold, misfiring/stuttering, you need to let it warm up on the driveway before taking it out. Im not sure if it is adding to much fuel (aka mixture screw etc?) or, not enough air (idle speed screw?). Im concered about the air bleed under the carb top, the large gasket that stretches over ventuir and float chamber has two small holes to allow an air passage from above the choke flap...I worry that this gasket covers the hole, I have tried several gaskets but can never be sure it is placed correctly as they always seem to be slightly too big and saggy? Any ideas/knowledge would be much appreciated. One more thing - The car used to start fine, and apon using the choke the engine speed would rise up to around 2krpm, (if you wanted although I didnt do regularly due to fear of cold engine oil...). Now, using similar level of choke will stall the car. Many thanks in advance! - Sorry for the long winded reading! I think my prob may lie between a balance of idle speed screw, and mixture screw, but I cant get it right! ![]() Answer: ok, first of all ignore the % gas readings at the garage. then, take your carb completely apart, and soak it in petrol for a couple of hours. then clean with an old toothbrush. then spray brake or carb cleaner through all holes, to clean the out. you aint mentioned if you have done this, but i certainly would recommend doing it! when you have the carb back together, make sure you have the 'o' ring replaced on the mixture screw, it should be in the webcon kit. then screw the mixture screw in a couple of turns. also make sure the throttle return spring is actually short enuff to pull hard on the accelerator cable!!! - sometimes a sticky carb base can cause alot of trouble. start the car and get it warm. then turn the idle speed screw until the revs are around 1k. then screw the mixture screw in, until the revs drop, then unscrew about 2-3turns. then turn on your headlights, and fogs etc etc. the revs dont really wanna drop below 800rpm. if they do twiddle the idle speed alittle, and then readjust the mixture screw. also if the exhaust does smell very fuelly whilst idling, then just screw the mixture screw in a bit more, to lean it off abit. hope this helps the cold idle problem too! |

Subject: low comp pistons Question: hi matey, i am rebuilding my engine ,i have a second set of pistons ,i will be running about 23psi .can i machine standard piston to make them low comp pistons ,if so how much do i remove from face of piston ?. Answer: You can machine standard pistons to low comp spec, but no-one seems to be sure how much comp' will be present after decking them to x height. You could drop a pm to Colin (Master) as he angle-grinded the tops off the Camp-Arse pistons to help lower the compression, and that seemed to perform well enough at Nat' Day. He'll probably be able to give you a rough idea of how much the compression has now dropped to, for the amount of piston crown that was removed. Saying all that, for 23psi, you can run on standard comp' pistons if needs be. |

Subject: skette spoiler? Question: hi,i am after a skette spoiler well i think thats what there called..can i purchase just the spoiler or do i have to buy it with the body kit?if i can buy it where from and do you know how much roughly?many thanks Answer: you need to do a search on the net and find out exactly what you are after first. i thought skeete closed down a while ago, but i may be wrong. you could get lucky and see if someone isbreaking a kitted one, but i also think that the skeete kitted car is a rare beast! having said that i know tuners do sell their body kits in bits so you can get them abit at a time, so buying a spoiler seperately should be no problem. |

Subject: project slam Question: hi wizard, hows it going geeza, just a quick question really,i wana slam my 5 to the ground, wana go real low, especially at back, what kits r there out there that i can get that will achive the look i want, ive heard avo coilovers are the best, wana go bout 90mm,wud they go that low, cheers wizard, keep ur the gud work Answer: you would have to ask the people who make the coilovers, or the people who at least sell them. the main problem with a 90 mm drop besides speed bumps is that the front wheels will camber in alot at the top, and you will have to get this sorted via camber correction bolts or other means, otherwise your car will not grip well, and wreck the inside of your tyres in no time at all. |

Subject: Engine Still not Running Question: I need to know that when the bottom end is at top dead center (TDC), Which valves should be open, as my No. 2 Valve is open a bit and i do not think that it should be, and i have no Compression but i think this is due to the valve being open at the wrong time, i am trying every effort to solve this wyself but i need Help, AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!1 Answer: Neither the inlet or exhaust valve should be open when the piston in that chamber is at TDC...unless you like banana shaped valve stems ![]() If you've got no compression (assuming you mean on one cylinder, not all of them), check that you haven't banana'd a valve stem, that the valve(s) head itself are ok and seating flush, that the liner hasn't cracked, that the piston rings haven't cracked/broken away, that the piston ringland area isn't fractured...and that the comp' tester if fully screwed in & sealed ![]() |

Subject: getting a bit warm!! Question: Hi Wiz, Not sure if this is a problem or not....The radiator looks ok and I recently flushed it out. I also have a low temp fan switch and thermostat. My 5 temp guage normally sits just over half way, slighty higher when doing 80 on motorway. However I went for a blast down some quiet lanes and within 10 mins it was well over the 3/4 mark. I eased up and after a couple of mins she cooled back down to the normal temp. There is no typical signs of head gasket problems and Im confident it is bled up properly. I plan on doing a few track days soon and obviously dont want this to happen! Is a copper cored rad the answer or do I have other problems!? thanks in advance Jono Answer: No, copper core rad is not the answer, but a new replacement rad altogether might well do the trick ie, sounds like your one could be caked with crud inside. Also worth checking that the thermostat is fully opening.Just out of curio', are you losing water? |
