Subject: spacers

Question:
i have a skeete kitted r5gtt and am now looking for wheels... are 18"" too big??

how do you go about determining the size of spacers i need??

cheers wiz

Answer:
What offset 18's? It may be that they fit straight on and fill out the arches sufficiently enough, without you having to worry about fitting spacers.

Subject: pink vacuum hosing

Question:
i'm really after some pink hoses or vacuum hosing,i've tried companies and to no avail do you know of any company i could try please!

Answer:
Pretty sure you can get them, as I've seen some garish pink boost hoses in my time in the R5t world. The sexual preference of the driver back then was in question, but hey that's another story! eek big grin

Try contacting SFS or Samco directly and see if they can assist.

Question:
hi wizard i bought a brand new t25 turbo for the 5 in feb.i checked the turbo for play today and there is movement in the shaft should the turbo last longer than this i have only been running it at 9 psi and 14 now and again.thanks gaz

Answer:
what sort of movement?
imagine of the shaft inside the turbo housing is your penis....
except in this case any in and out movement is bad. but alittle up and down is ok...but not too much. about 1/2mm is alright....

and thats taken straight out of the 'Car-masutra' rolls eyes

Subject: electric windows

Question:
electric windows wont work but fuses are ok can u help please

Answer:
take interior door card off and clan the plug that connects into the motor. see if the plug is getting power, when you press the window button. if it is seeing power then connect battery direct to motor, as sometimes it need the direct current to get it working again. worst case scenario is that you need a new motor.

Subject: low or standard

Question:
hi wizz. im thinkin ov gettin some low compession pistons , but whats the difference with standard ones, whitch is best for 250+ bhp
cheers

Answer:
if you get 250+bhp i'll eat my hat. but thats being a little negative....so on the positive side id say stick with standard pistons, cos if you happen to melt one, then you can easily replace it instead of getting the tops machined off...

Subject: reliable engine

Question:
hi there i've seen a question id: 4861 which you mentioned for serious reliability you'd be looking at steel liners, forged pistons, h section rods etc...could you please tell me what else would be needed for the engine internally and if poss where could I purchase such items...as I have not seen any tuners with any of the bits you've mentioned...

many thanks

Answer:
ok, further to that answer, i should add that the gt's oil system needs looking at.- along the lines of a dry sump, or an external oil pressure relief valve, so you could easily adjust what oil pressure you wanted.
id also think about getting the crank nitrided, to toughen it up abit.
as for where to get most of this stuff, you should really be looking at companies that specialise in engine building, or even suppliers of hotrod bits. check hot rod mags too.

Subject: Which Turbo For Track Use

Question:
Ive almost finnished building my car into a 'track-day weapon' and was fter a little bit of info as to the best turbo suited for track driving.

Im running a bit T28 roller bearing at the mo from K-Tec, but i am led to belive that this is a littlt too big for what im after as it is only producing boost above 4k rpm!

Any advise would be apriciated as i dont want to bog down in the cornes.

Answer:
Track-driving is all about fun, so no point in having some big laggy a***d turbo that takes an eternity to spool-up and get going.

Most of the rtoc trackday lads are running standard or small T25 turbos, simply for the fact that big boost/power isn't really required on track, thus the aforementioned size blowers are perfect for the job.

Subject: Not Running Engine

Question:
i was using my car yesterday and all was well and then it just cut out with no warning and will not start again, i have changed the coil and i have a very strong spark and i have fuel getting through, i have tried to put fuel straight into the carb and into the plugs but still not anything, anybody got any ideas?
AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Answer:
My first suspect part would've been the tdc sensor/lead/connection, but as you're getting a spark (I assume it's a constant one?) that kinda rules that out...unless of course you're only getting an intermittent spark?

Are you getting a constant pulsed spark at each plug lead?

Have you comp' tested the engine? Might be worth checking...

Report back to Wizard HQ with your findings and we'll go from there smile

Subject: Noisy Dump Valve

Question:
Hey Wiz I have a baileys dv and it makes my car sound like a large truck when I change gears, I was wondering whether there are any dvs available that are quieter and also whether it would be worth removing the dv completely cheers!

Answer:
A couple of the tuners supply dump-valves with a foam filter located around the exhaust holes to help mute the 'dumping' noise. It's also there to stop dirt particles getting into the valve when at idle, etc.

No problem in removing the dump-valve altogether as well. This appears to be a growing trend in the rtoc community... wink

Subject: Conrod Orientation

Question:
I'm currently rebuilding a Renault 5 GT Turbo engine (from a bare block). I'm fitting new pistons and liners (Standard compression). I know there is markings on the tops of the pistons that all have to be facing the flywheel but which way round do the conrods need to be? Does it matter? Are the holes through the pistons (for the gudgeon) central? Regards, Chris Roberts

Answer:
It's not mega essential that the crown markings point towards the flywheel, but you want the con-rods positioned so that the oil-way/groove (where the bearings locate into as such) are towards the rear of the engine.

Subject: 1.7 gtx

Question:
hi wizard im thinking of replacing the standard 1.4 gt engine for a 1.7 gtx engine is this do able and if so what sort of tuning mods can i do to it ie cam etc

Answer:
Yep, it's do-able, but a bit pointless as you're gonna be down on power for starters, and even by the time you've tweaked the engine (headwork, cam, etc) you'll probably still be down on power compared to a standard gtt engine...maybe

You could add NOS to the equation and possibly turbo'ing it to help raise the power level, but that's potentially big money, and then you're back to questioning the reliability again.

If you do want to go down the 1.7L route though, have a look at transplanting a Volvo 440/480t engine into your car, as they're already turbo'd, efi'd, and good reliable power is now being had from them.

Drop Sparkie, Scoff and/or Haz a pm for more info on this conversion, as they've got fingers in the 1.7L pie smile

Subject: BIG BHP

Question:
Hi Wizard, i've had all the work on my 5 done at K-Tec and im looking to bump up the BHP big potatoes. Ive had the head port n flowed, group A head gasket, group A carb, Piper Cam, K-Tec Alloy Intercooler, Samco hose's, Hybrid turbo (stg2), full Scorpian exhaust, uprated induction. Im runnind 20psi but the original intention was to run 30psi with a octane booster. I've heard that EFI is the way forward to increase the BHP further and it probably the safest way. Who specializes in this conversion?? Im based in Soton so the closer the better.

Thanks
Adam

Answer:
A couple of the tuners are on the efi band-wagon, so it might be best to have a look back through the boards and see who's been speaking about who's efi systems...

In particular, and in no order, BB Tuning, Dyno-Tec, and MS Motorsport to name 3 companies for starters.

If you're after a quick bhp increase in the meantime, why not look at upgrading your turbo to a larger unit, and with that, more boost, first of all.

Question:
roughly what boost am i running at the start of the red shaded area and what bhp will this be??? thanks

you need a new boost gauge mate, the standard gauges are becoming notoriously unreliable. its supposed to be 12psi, but i bet its more than that.

Subject: fuel cap cover

Question:
need help on refit fuel cap covere as the one i got now fell of need to know how it comes of and gos bk on cheers

Answer:
to get the flap on the mechanism, you need to pull the bit that the flap attaches onto, towards you out of the carwith a pair of pliers then twist it so it cant spring back into its holder.- you need to pull it a fair way before you twist it, else you will snap it. when its twisted then put the flap on it, by gently bending the plastic rails on the back of the flap open enuff for the lugs to locate in the two holes. then twist mechanism back, watch it pop back into hole and the flap should sit perfectly!!!

Subject: fuel delivery

Question:
alrite wiz! got a problem wondered if u can help? i have no fuel delivery to the carb. before the car stopped starting there was a noise from around the fuel pump area! wud u think it is likely to be the fuel pump or something else? there is fuel in the car! cheers mate!

Answer:
short out the fuel pump relay under the passenger side footwell, so that it comes on when the ign is on.... then pull off the fuel pipe to the carb. if its pi$$ing out then you have just fixed your fuel pump relay problem. if it isnt pi$$ing out then you will have to buy a new pump.

Subject: God damn driveshaft :(

Question:
hello wise one
whilst fitting my brand spanking new driveshaft (off side) i noticed something missing, the haynes manual goes on about a pin that goes through the hole between the driveshaft and the gear box. Problem is i havent got that pin and the driveshaft doesnt come with one. is this pin totally necessary and if it is what the hell are you supposed to seal it with? can u use the same stuff u use for sealing the sump?
thankyou wizard, y'know, i realy like u...............

Answer:
tommy, you're boring me..... wink

if you dont fit the driveshaft pin, then the shaft can pop off the gearbox. i didnt fit one on my car for over a year...but then again i like to live dangerously...near the edge m-a-a-a-a-a-a-n!
id just use a split pin or a rusty nail, and poke it through the hole and bend the ends over so it sits tight. dont bother sealing it.

Subject: Oil Pressure Gauge

Question:
Can you tell me how to fit an oil pressure gauge? I have a Splitfire gauge ready to go in, im not mechanicaly minded and nobody locally is willing to help. Can you help me? Cheers.

Answer:
firstly, is it a mechnanical or an electronic gauge? if its electronic, then you will need to unscrew the original sensor at the bottom of the turbo oil feed and screw on the new sender unit. its its the mechanical one then you have to work out where to 't' off the oil line, and then put your 't' in, and feed the hollow tubr into the car.
it may even be worthwhile asking splitfire for fitting instructions. they should be able to send you some.
