Subject: loud tapping

Question:
hi mate keep blowing my head gasket alot more than usual? its making the centre circles of the gasket go egg shape why is this??? im running about 20psi have alot of mods too but i only floored it through 2nd 3rd 4th and a bit of 5th up too 110 is that too much as ive nailed it alot more than that before and it didnt blow plus i was racing my mate who has less mods but running the same boost and his was fine could mine be detinating wrong?? 1 more question i have a loud tapping noise on tick over and when i drive as soon as i put my foot on the pedle i can here it in the car not so much when i let off?? ive swapped rocker arms round and adjusted the tappits loads checked manifold seems fine ive been told it could be piston clatter any ideas??? i think ive lost a little power too but still boosts 20psi what do you think needs replacing again pistons crank cam head?? as ive done it all once this year cheers mate

Answer:
i hope you have the correct jets in your carburettor.... either that or your pistons could be non gt turbo ones, or the ignition unit is faulty.
the knocking noise could be bottom end or piston slap.... do a compression check to see if you are getting correct compression. this should eliminate worn liner bores.

Subject: Left hand drive conversion

Question:
Dear Mr Wizard,

I have a mint low mileage 87 Phase 1 GTT that would like to take to France with me when I move, is it possible to convert it to lhd, I seem to recall hearing that the body shells were different and I m not keen on doing a full re-shell. I might as well buy another when I get there.

Jake

Answer:
where are you gonna get a lhd dash from?
to be honest i think it would be too much hassle.
you see lhd cars over here and im sure they dont have too many probs... so a rhd car over there might not be such a big problem.
it wasnt a prob when i drove over there recently smile

Subject: problem solved

Question:
question id : 5088

I have solved the problem, it was the main power to the fuel relay.

But a new problem came with this.
It can idle, but its very bad, and if i keep the revs steady at 2500-3000 it misfires. Every ""normal"" thing is checked. Idle screw all jets, the one way jets, new gaskets etc...

Answer:
check your timing sensor lead.....

Subject: 12.9 head bolts 2

Question:
thanx 4 ya reply wiz, surely the haynes manual only quotes for standard head bolts, not the uprated ones? I thought the reason uprated head bolts are used so that you can torque em more than standard? cheers wiz.

Answer:
Haynes does quote for standard headbolts, but then they quote everything else in there for a standard R5t...and how many people are still running their R5t's like that!? wink

Standard headbolts can be tightened up a touch more than they recommend, but then you run the risk of the bolts snapping. Not good, hence why people fit the 12.9 tensile bolts, as they can be torqued up more.

Now don't argue with the wizard anymore young whipper snapper! wink big grin *lol*

Subject: Track Settings

Question:
I have got an R5 for a track day car it has coilovers on the front, What would be a good starting ride height.

Answer:
I'd say the bump/rebound settings and spring rate are more important than ride height. Get them sorted, then worry about the ride height. If the car is on coilovers, you can play about with the height settings till it feels good for you.

And what better place to try out your car/suspension settings...

hey wiz, just a quick one today, ive bought a fmic with the pipework i was wandering tho, can u cut the pipework to the carb and put a silicone joiner in there with the dv and t piece?

Answer:
Yep, can't see why not, although it'd be a shame to cut up the nice shiney pipework to fit a tacky dump-valve... wink

Subject: 12.9 tensile bolts

Question:
hi, i have been told that you need to use a washer on the bolts that hold the rocker assembly due to them being a fraction longer than the standard bolts, is this correct? also do you need to reset the tappits after a head gasket change? thanx

Answer:
Nope, the washers (6 of them) go with the inner 6 headbolts, leaving the 4 bolts on their own to hold the rocker-shaft pedestals.

Subject: Rear Mounted Radiator

Question:
Hi Wiz, I am thinking about moving the rad to the rear of my stripped out 5. Do you think the standard water pump would be man enough to shift the water or should I consider an electric water pump, by the way the heater has been bypassed and is not in use. Apart from getting air to the rad(planning on using a huge Zirgo fan off of Ebay to aid cooling) what probs do you see me encountering. Cheers
Phill

Answer:
might sound a silly question, but why not leave the thing where its supposed to be?- i hope you have got a seperate oil cooler on too...
i can see you sweating like Mart when he's faced with a curry!- the radiator will seriously heat up you cabin!!!
if you are still intent on doing it, i would recommend siting the radiator closer to the front of the car. just to eliminate hose problems...

Question:
Alright, my 5 only boosts to 0.6 bar.
usually runs at 14 psi, there is no obvious leak so think it could be the interccoler has gone

wat do u think it could be?

Answer:
the intercooler my dear watson...

fill the cooler with white spirit, making sure you dont spill and around the seals. gently swish the spirit around the intercooler, and hey presto all leaks should now appear wet.

Question:
ello,

my fuel pumps makes some very funny noise's the the ignition is turned on.

it sounds like the pump is going up through the gears, pumping more fuel, even when the car is turned off!?!?!

could this be the fuel presure valve??

cheer's

Answer:
No, but it could be perfectly normal if the fuel was running v low in the tank.

If plenty of fuel is present, check the pump's wiring.

Subject: Valve Clearances

Question:
Hi there all mighty one
ive got a high lift cam in my 5 it is a Kent RT150 and ive got the valve clearances set to standard will that be ok or is there a certain gap they should be for that cam, Cheers

Answer:
According to Kent, the valve clearances should be set @ 0.20mm (inlet) and 0.25mm (exhaust).

About the same gap as you'd find on a Brummie wizard's wallet on a beer-fest night out...

Subject: tappits

Question:
i am in the process of swapping the head gasket and want to know when to adjust the valve clearance after the initial torqing of the head bolts or after running for a while and then retorqing the head bolts? cheerz

Answer:
Do it both times, as the head may 'rest' slightly more after being initially torqued up & running, hence may increase the valve clearance gap a touch.

Question:
could you tell me who i go about chosing a tail pipe for my side exit...what fits onto the system

Answer:
The tail-pipe comes pre-fitted as such onto the side-exit system.

If you're after an alternative outlet though, have a look through the Demon Tweeks catalogue, or take your car to a place like Top Gear, Hayward & Scott, etc.

Subject: head gasket or head

Question:
hello wiz

been getting problems with a big oil leak from the pipe that comes off the bottom of the turbo.i took it off 2day to check it and it was mayonaised inside it,so took all my breather pipes off and it was thick with it,i cleaned all the insides and the swirl pot and put back together.drove it home and noticed it was hardly idling when i stopped, popped the bonnet and there was mayonase all over the place that looked like it come from the breather filter, ive checked the coolant and its oily.can this be headgasket or the actual head, ive been running 9-16psi on adjustable boost its a weekend car and have had the full engine rebuild over a year ago so dont understand hows it gone.sorry about the long winded msg mate, hope u can help

cheers , batman

Answer:
More than likely the headgasket itself has failed, but seeing as you've gotta take the head off to replace the gasket, it's not gonna hurt to get the head checked over at the same time as well.

Subject: Vectra cdti 150

Question:
I have the following done to my car :

04/96-MD14 Hybrid Turbo,
05/96-Uprated intercooler, bleed valve,
Had uprated jet but changed to standard when carburettor was reconditioned,
Scorpion Full system
10/98-K&N Element Air Filter,
Dump Valve-Power zone,
B8ev Spark plugs.

However i was taken by a diesel i think it was the 150bhp Vectra - i was having trouble keeping up....frown hope it wasn;t the 120bhp spec.

My car has 130,000nmls on it now do u think its time to change to a 172 sport?

Answer:
How d'you know the Vectra wasn't mod'd? Some of the 2L turbo diesel engines can be chipped upto 180bhp, with a shed load of torque, fairly easily these days, and with that level of power on tap it'd take a reasonably tuned R5 to see the car off!

You could try fitting a larger blower and running more boost, or not worry about it and just get on with your life! smile
