Subject: Adjusting

Question:
Hi 'The Wizard',

OK, sorry if this sounds like a very n00b question. blush
How do I go about PROPERLY adjusting the 'Maximum' boost setting, of an In-Car adjustable boost controller?
(so when I wind the controller anti-clockwise fully, it's maximum psi, is a few PSI higher than what it is now)?

Keep up the great work! Look forward to your reply. smile

Answer:
tell me how you have got it set up. there are so many different ways to set them up, i could be here all day. have you got all three pipes going to the unit, or have you just got one? etcetc?

Subject: dump valve

Question:
cab u put 2 dump valves in two different
hoses ,will it cause any probs

Answer:
Assuming you mean putting a dump valve in the turbo to intercooler hose and another dump valve in the intercooler to carb hose, then no it won't cause any problems, although it's a bit pointless in all honesty.

If you're thinking it'll make the dump louder by having 2, rest assured it won't.

Subject: fuel economy

Question:
Alrite geezer, i'm drivin from Brum down to newquay soon wos jus wonderin if i turn the boost back dwn to bout 9psi will i save much fuel ? At the mo. ive got it at 14psi with a 135 main and 90 - 100 air corrector. be cruisin down at a steady 80mph (probably)

Answer:
You're not gonna save that much I'm afraid.

You could disconnect the actuator arm from the wastegate pin so that no boost is possible, but that's gonna make for a boring drive.

If you want an economical motor, sell the 5! wink

Subject: VNT?

Question:
Hi Wiz, seeing as your all knowing... what do You think of VNT's? worth a try or just a gimmick? cheers!!

Answer:
i think they are worth it (in fact its a great turbo), but.....
a word of caution.
you must use good quality oil, that doesnt get too thin when hot.
this also means that if your car is badly overfuelling then this ruins the oil, and makes it very thin.
it is also advisable to run a seperate oil cooler, as the VNT's are oil cooled and once again kill the oil
(unless you just remove your thermostat, as this effects oil temperature too wink )

Subject: knocking

Question:
can you tell me whats up with my car
when engine starts there is a tapping - knocking noise coming from the bottom of the engine
when i rev the car the knocking goes with the speed of the revs

Answer:
If it is originating from the bottom of the engine, it's more than likely a worn big-end bearing(s). Has the engine ran low on oil recently?

Subject: Cuts out

Question:
My cars been running grate, but got to the bottom of my house and it jsut cut out,it kicks over grate and runs if I keep my foot on the accelerator but soon as I let go it cuts out, whats the prob?

Answer:
your idle jet is blocked. take the big brass screw out of the side of the carb, and take it apart, clean it thoroughly, and spray wd40 down the hole it came out off, for 20secs - using the straw attachment.
should be ok, assuming you still have your mixture screw in place!wink

Subject: Crunching Gears

Question:
Hi Wiz,

I have a problem with my cluch and or gearbox, the following is happening: ok in 1st, 2nd and 3rd crunches - reverse can also be bad. Each gear can be tough to get into as well. However this only happens intermittently as for 10 min or so the car changes gear no problem at all then reverts to the above!??!

I have taken the block / clip thing off and this has made a minor difference, I had only one crunch on my way in this morning instead of the usual 5 or so...the biting point has been raised slilghtly (it has always been very low) - I beleive I have the Volvo clutch, can't be sure as it was in there when I bought the car.

Cheers in advance for any help

Answer:
change the clutch, sounds very dodgy. if it still dont fix the problem then you have a dodgy gearbox. sorry mate

Subject: Stalling at idle when braking

Question:
Hello Wizard
Ive just finished rebuilding my 5 and took it for an mot today but everytime i brake and push the clutch down the engine either goes to stall or does stall. Ive checked the vacuum pipe to the brake servo and all seems ok ..... any ideas ?
Cheers

Answer:
Check/clean the idle jet on the carb.

Also make sure the mixture screw is positioned ok, and that the o-ring on the screw is still in situ. Check that the idle c.o is circa 1.5%

Subject: not starting no fuel at carb

Question:
checked pump, pump working what next, no fuel at carb please help

Answer:
How did you check the pump?

Are you cranking the engine over and getting no fuel at the carb? If so, check for a spark. If no spark, suspect tdc lead.

Did you crank the engine over and get fuel at the pump? If so, check the regulator hasn't failed and is diverting all fuel back into the tank, and/or that there's no blockage(s) between the pump outlet, to fuel reg', to carb inlet (highly unlikely though).

Subject: Fluctuating boost

Question:
Hey wiz,

hope this ain't been asked a million times b4.
I have recently fitted a full T25 to my PH2 5GTT after my kazillion mile T2 died. I have done a few short test runs and have noticed the boost level altering under constant acceleration. The actuator is set to 10psi and i'm running a completely standard actuator circuit.
So if I gently accelerate through 1st and 2nd and then push hard in 3rd the boost rises to 10 psi drops down slightly (about 1 or 2 psi) and then builds back to 10, the fluctuation happens over about a 3s period.
So i'm pretty sure I have no circuit leaks and a good actuator so do you have any other ideas? Is it perhaps a fuel issue now there's so much more air being moved? I'm back on the RR soon anway but any ideas in the mean time would be top!
Cheers.

Answer:
try the cup mod. and make the lines to your bleed valve shorter or use thinner pipe.

Question:
hi wiz.im fitting an after market central locking kit, theres 1 red, 2 purple ,2 white wires ,whitch one are the up and down ones?

cheers

Answer:
what is love, baby don't hurt me with these questions no more.... sorry you've probably heard that a million times before.....
as for your question, ill be frank- im no good at electrical problems, but the places where i would look for the answer wuld be at the back of the blue haynes manual, as this has more gt turbo wiring diagrams than the green, failing that look at Rich R's files cos im sure he has the missing 'blue' pages there...

Subject: choosing pistons & liners

Question:
hello , i am planning to run 25 psi on my engine,i wonder if the standard liners & pistons can handle this or if i should go for steel liners & forged pistons,
& what jets should i use.
thank you

Answer:
is your middle name 'heavenly'?

as for the car....
it depends what other mods you have done to the car. the standard liners will take 25psi, but you need to tell me what other mods you have before i can work out the best thing for you to do....

Subject: rust

Question:
my 5 has a few patches of rust here and there,im getting it resprayed in november but would still like to treat it now can you recommend anything as a temporary resort until it gets sprayed cheers

Answer:
depends where the rust is.
id suggest getting a drill with a wire brush attachment and giving the rust a good going over. then paint on some rust killer. once that has dried paint over it with primer or underseal or summat, to stop water getting to the metal!

Subject: reply:choosing liners

Question:
front mount intercooler (80x20x4 cm approx), larger radiator, separate oil cooler, msd ignition with additional retard module (adjustable), home made water injection, KKK turbo adapted to gtt but soon T25
( standard head,cams, pistons,carb.)
(tested to 20 psi with 145 main jet )

thanks

Answer:
Sounds an impressive setup smile

It has been known for people to run circa 2bar boost on std pistons & liners, but I'd say that's pretty much on the limit of durability of the std stuff.

If you can keep detonation at bay, good fuelling, and charge temp's down, you'll probably be ok at 25psi.

If you plan on running 2bar+ constantly though, I'd then consider steel liners.

Forged pistons really aren't required either way, as the thing that kills std pistons is detonation, hence as I said, if you can keep it at bay, you won't need forged items.

And if you require someone to come over to Tahiti for a few weeks to help fit them all, please email back at wizard@rtoc... wink

Subject: blowing noise

Question:
since buying my 5 a week ago i noticed when idling a blowing noise coming from the engine something simular to the noise your boiler would make when the hot air is released is the best way to describe it.on inspection the noise seemed to come from the turbo where i noticed one of the bolts connecting the turbo to manifold had come out i tried putting bolt back in but it is threaded where can i get a new bolt and does this sound like the cause of the noise as there is a slight gap where bolt is missing sorry if this is an obvious question but i know nothing about cars cheers

Answer:
Yep, sounds like you've answered your own question. Would you like a job as a turbo wizard? *lol*

You should be able to source a bolt/stud from a local hardware shop. If the worst comes to the worst though, one of the tuners should be able to help/may even pop you one in the post if you ask nicely.

Question:
i have done a compression test on my 5 turbo and the lowest cylinder was 157 and the highest was 170. is this normal? if not what will cure it? cheers

Answer:
A std carb and 30psi+ boost would 'cure' it *lol*

Those comp' values are fine.
