Subject: steering knock

Question:
hey wizzy my car is due for its MOT, when the turn the wheel side to side i can hear a slight knocking knoise, its doesnt make any sound when the car is moving, i.e less load situations, when the car is stationary (more load) it makes this noise, just wandering if the mot people will fail the car for this? and whats causing this noise?

Answer:
if its a groaning noise, then stop playing with yer missus inside the car......those seats aren't wipe clean, and they need to be kept mint wink

its more likely to be suspension top mount issues. if the top bearing has seen better days then it will creak and knock like a good'un! either that or your bottom balljoint/ tie rod end is fecked.

take it for the mot, if it fails they will tell you what is wrong!!!

Subject: which battery?

Question:
hi wiz,
am in need of a new battery as old is totally dead! went to motorworld and they were chargin £45 quid for a battery to fit my car! wondering if i could pick up a cheapo second hand battery, but needed to know if it had to be specific? does the amp need to be at a minimum-maximum or something?

Answer:
the larger the amp battery the bigger it physically is. too big and it won't fit your battery tray. i find that 45-46amp batteries fit nicely.
try gsf or eurocarparts. you should be paying £20-£30 for one.

Subject: alsorts goin on

Question:
right wiz here goes firstly after i have booted it around for abit the ignition lights come on and off they go off if the revs arnt at idle.now the battery light has started to go off and on when it feels like it to.i thought it wud be the alternator but i have changed that n the problem is still there it also doesnt want to start either the battery is fine but sounds flat when you try to start it.i have a volt meter in the car when i turn ignition on it says 12v but when i turn the egnition it goes below ten plz help supposed to be goin french car show nxt weekend thanks gaz.

Answer:
check to see that the engine earth is ok, then check that the starter is ok- cos when they are knackered, they stick, and this causes a drain on the starter system....hence why 10volts reading.
take the death connector apart underneath the expansion tank, behind the passenger side light- clean it up, and put back togther- but smear with vaseline!!! then also inspect and clean up the regulator terminals on the alternator. you may wanna make your own earths off the alt to the body and the engine block too...this can help matters smile

Subject: valves

Question:
How much pressure can the intake valves take before they pop open. I konw that the starlet gt turbo can only withhold 18psi if standard then it gets dangrous?

Answer:
hmmm, now this is an interesting question....why would you wanna know this?
think about it.... at anyone time the boost enters the inlet manifold, and is directed to the inlet valve that is open at the time. im pretty sure that the pressure from inside the cyinder at any one time is greater than 18psi- have you ever done a compression check?- even with fecked rings it is still 50psi. this would mean that even at high boost the valves on the cylinders that arent on their inlet stroke would not let air/fuel in.
if you are that worried by it, then put uprated valve springs in, you could even run double valve springs if you want to....

Subject: side exit waterfall

Question:
my freinds 5 has water flowing out of the exhaust like a waterfall ,i no the head gasket has gone ! but what wud cause the water from the exhaust...

Answer:
a certain Dr Jones told me about this very problem today. he reckoned that its a cracked head, but im not so sure, cos he hasnt taken the head off yet has he....
if the head gasket has gone, as the piston moves downwards to suck air and fuel into the engine, it will suck water out of the block instead, which is then pushed through the exhaust.

when you take the head off, check to see that pistons 1 - 4, and 2-3 are at the same levels in the liners, cos you may have bent the conrod, if you've been sucking in that much water.

any further problems, get Dr Jones to give me call. wink

Subject: wheel bearing removal

Question:
hello wizard me old mukka
is there any chance u could explain how to get a wheel bearing off better than those lying haynes manuals?
thankyou

Answer:
haynes manual, doesnt lie....much
you will need sockets the same size as the outer race.
remember to take the circlip out!!!
you'll need a big hammer.

once you get the bearing out, you may be left with some of the inner race stuck to centre flange thing. you will have to heat it to get that off...maybe use a puller of some type.

Subject: up and down

Question:
hi wiz . u were right about the diaphraghm in the dump valve being split . is it possible just to buy a diaphraghm or do i have to buy a new dump valve . i got a fully rebuilt carb back as well and my car is running hdog rough . the revs go up and down like a nun in a cucumber field . any ideas . also (lastly) i just got an in car boost controller kit . where does it go . is it between the front port on te actuator to the bottom of the carb .

cheers . yur info is always much appreciated

Answer:
1) yes you can buy a seperate diaphram.
2) check to see mixture screw has rubber o ring on it, and that idle jet hasnt got sh it in it.- remove big brass screw on side of carb, and clean it out thoroughly!!!
3)yes, front port actuator and top of carb....bottom port on carb has fuel mixed in with it, and it will leak out of bleed valve...u dont want that....

Subject: Lack of Fuel?

Question:
Dear Wiz,

Most of the time my car is fine but recently when in say 4th or 5th on boost (high revs) the car hesitates allot and I loose power, it is as if only a little bit of fuel is getting through.... I stop and let the car idle and it seems fine, rev it a bit and it seems fine - drive off and all seems relatively well.

Also I had a shoofty under the bonnet and this thing had come apart, please see image www.rtoc.org/library/file.asp?id=21478
(not my engine by the way)

Cheers for any help.....

Answer:
first of all check sparkplugs/leads/dizzy cap and rotor. it may seem like fuelling, but at high revs, and in the upper gears there is alot of load on the engine, which puts strain on the ignition system.

also do a compression check, to see that you aint fried the rings or summat.

if they are all ok, ask yerself the questions...when did i last change my fuel filter and is my fuel pump a high output one?
you get my drift?

the thing that has come apart is the breather pot, or oil seperator pot if u wanna be correct. put the pipes back on it, assuming the pot aint split!

Subject: Backfire from carb

Question:
HELP ME PLEASE!!!
When i brought the car it had stood for 3 years. Put jump leads on and it started right up after cranking with no main ht lead on to get oil round. Put new silicon hoses on and now it backfires out of the carb. Checked all usual stuff and found compression down to 3 bar on no 4 cylinder, all others are 12 bar. Removed head and found gasket blown at far edge of firing ring. Replaced gasket and it is better but it seems to be holding back when revved and intermittantly backfires. Temp gauge sits at middle no problem and no bubbling or rapid pressure build up in expansion tank. Could it be old fuel causing problem? Sorry for the essay but i really really really want it done for french car show!! Cheers matey.

Answer:
i hope you've put new leads, plugs ,dizzy cap and rotor on....

the carb probably need cleaning out too.....

Subject: White hot edition!

Question:
Hi Wiz, my mate has just bought an R5 White Hot Edition, do you know what the differences are in this model???? It is completely standard with a genuine 52,000 miles on the clock. I've had a look on the net and can't find any information on this model. Cheers mate.

Answer:
never heard of one. are you sure its not a dealer sales thing, trying to drum up business by putting 'white hot' stickers on it, back in the day? or is it an over enthusiastic owner, putting white hot stickers on some time during its life?

Subject: 6 gears

Question:
is it true that you can get a sixth gear or is it just a pork pie.

Answer:
ktec once used a sadev 6 speed sequential box, for around £6k, which had to be modified to fit the 5, as it was for a race clio or summat. also i'd imagine the torque that the box could handle wasnt all that great, so their may be a chance that it could have broken, if too much power was put through it.
that is the only 6 speed box ive heard of, although isnt the rneault spider a 6 speeder.... but im not sure which way round the engine goes on those. maybe best speak to prima racing, as i know they used to deal with these things.

Subject: Turbo Boost Sticking

Question:
Please can you help, when driving through the gears once the turbo kicks in, it seems to stick on untill you change up the gears or ease off on the throttle, and this is repeated through all the gears and the needle goes all the way up on the turbo gauge. My clutch is on its way out and needs replacing, could this be causing the problem?

Many thanks

Answer:
am i correct in thinking, that you believe that the turbo is only supposed to come on for a very short while, then stop boosting?
if that is the case, then im very sorry to inform you that you have been misinformed.
once the turbo comes on boost, it will stay on boost as long as the accelerator is being pressed down.
change your clutch anyway, you'll thank me for it one day smile

Subject: boost

Question:
hi wiz ive been to the rooling rd car produced 162bhp at 14 psi i wanted to take it further but the guy said it was safe to leave it where it is how much boost could i run i av got a t25, enlarged turbo elbow straight through exhaust uprated clutch group a carb uprated intercooler had engine build in 2003 prob couple other things thanks again gaz

Answer:
you need to check to see if the carb you have got is a group 'a' one, and find out what jets have been put in it.

if its a standard carb, with no mods, then 14psi is the max you can run. if it is a modded carb then you can run more, but you will need to see what size the main jet and air corrector are first smile

Subject: Sloppy, sloppy, and even more sloppy

Question:
When in gear the gear stick is sloppy, and will move side to side quite a lot. But driving is still ok. What can this be and where do i look for problems??

Answer:
there is a spring on the gt turbos attached to the floor under the car, that loops around the gear selector shaft, this stops it wobbling.
volvo 480's use a funky spring attached to the gearbox, that also fit on the 5 gearbox, if you really want it to be held more secure wink

Question:
Thinking about getting a remote starter from Impossible Performance. Like the idea but any probs or words of wisdom on a yes or no go??

Answer:
insurance people hate them don't they?
also, the gt aint like alot of cars..... most cars start after like two turns of the engine, the gt can sometimes start after 10 secs of cranking....- are you gonna hold the remote start button down until it starts?- by then you will have got to the car! *lol*

Subject: smooth then crunching

Question:
hi m8 when i am driving normally selecting gears it is fine but when i am driving a bit more severe and changing gears as fast as pos every gear change there is a slight crunch,
the engine has all been changed supplied from renault it has done about 900 miles i am also running a stage 2 turbo and a new carb also from renault the turbo is from k-tec also a t3 actuator i dont know what the boost is but it goes passed the red on the gauge nothing has been set up like mixture or timing just bolted together and put in when i got the engine it had a new clutch the clutch cable arm thingy is out of a volvo 440 turbo because i lost my 5 one, could this be the problem, cheers for the help.

Answer:
there is a plastic stop that the clutch pedal rests against in the 'up' position. press the clutch pedal down, and unclip the stop. then press the pedal a few times and take it for a test drive. the clutch pedal will be really high, but you are just testing to see if it cures the problem...if it does, then grind alittle bit off the stop using an angle grinder and replace it. carry ongrindinging until the pedal aint too high, and the clutch is ok.

Subject: water injectiction, boost, seal.

Question:
hi wiz
im running water injection and its pluged into my hard pipe from carb top to charge cooler.
where the water injection goes in it wont screw up tightly its like over time the hole in the hard pipe has got that bit bigger will i be losing boost pressure from this thanks.

also what could i do to get a gd seal thanks any info would be great

Answer:
You probably won't be losing that much boost from there, but you do run the risk of the jet being blown out the pipe under high boost pressure, which could cause damage to the jet, water spraying everywhere, etc.

Get some ptfe tape and/or araldite and try sealing it that way. Or block that hole off and re-drill/tap another hole for the jet.

Subject: We DON

Question:
Hi Wiz,

After a faultless run of form my car refuses to start.

After a trip back from Birmingham on a hot day I thought I smelled some burning. I slowed down and it went away.

The next morning when I go to start my car I get nothing. On turning the key the ignition lights come on as normal but that's it.

Can't hear the starter motor inititalising or anything.

Grrrrr

Is my starter motor FUBAR'd or is it something to do with the curious burning smell?

Please help!

Emms

Answer:
sounds like the white solenoid wire has burned through on the exhaust. it crosses over the top of the gearbox and joins the death connector behind the passenger side head lamp. trace it from there...it has a spade connector on it.
worst case scenario is that you have cooked the starter...but that is unlikely. smile

Question:
hi wiz,

my r5 has started doing this really mad squeeling noise from the drivers side of the carb . any ideas . i have checked the t piece etc and it seems sealed so im not sure what it is . just wondering if you had heard of this before . it only happens when the boost kicks in . so it has to be part of the air system doesnt it .

Answer:
what about high revs?
check all carb gaskets...and the carb top!
then check for leaks in the pipe!- and ditch the solenoid attached to the bulkhead, and block the hole off to the boost pipe smile
