Answer: if there isnt any power getting to the starter,i would say check the ignition barrel first, after that check the thickish white wire connection through the connector under the passenger headlight in the engine bay, have u measured voltage on the starter?to make sure its getting through?also check voltage at battery,it should be over 12 really,or at least very close,as can cause problems if not. |

Subject: valve clearance Question: When you adjust the valve clearance, does the car have to be put in 4th gear while the pulley is turned? Cheers Answer: no,the idea is to put the car in gear and jack the drivers side of the car up,then you can turn the wheel to turn the engine over if u see what i mean, much easier than struggling with a 19mm spanner on the bottom pulley i can tell you!

Subject: very bad idling and jerky moving engine Question: Carb rebuilt, new coolant pump, new fuel pump, new gaskets all round, cylinder head cleaned, tap heads adjusted and new head bolts. The engine was running very fine and it when it idled the engine would be 100%. But recently one of the coolant pipes burst. The engine begain to idle awful and then come back to normal. So I fixed the pipe, topped up the coolant, and removed the air trapped in the coolant. The engine would at first idle very badly even through the rev range. Then when it got hot the idle returned back to normal. I left it to idle for 2 minutes and one of the coolant pipes popped off and the mad idle was back. Did the same again. And the engine is now throughing its self forward after every time it gets clear bought of idling. So, I got a sprocket on the bottom pulley and had a go turning the engine manually and the engine is hard to turn. It must be something(or things) that is simple because the engine was running beyond perfect? Answer: do a compression check. you may have blown the headgasket. coolant pipes popping off?- never a good thing!!! |

Subject: Exhausts Question: I currently have a scorpian ss exhaust and want to have a exhaust that comes out of the centre of the back bumper. I know the spare wheel carrier wilkl have to go, but is there any other modification i need to do?? By changing to a twin back box (comming from centre of bumper0 will i loose any power, what are the gains and advantages?? Also can you recomed a place to get an exhaust from?? Cheers O'wize one Answer: No other mod's I can think of that'll need doing, apart from obviously cutting out the relevant size section in the rear bumper. I doubt there'll be any advantage or disadvantage, as you're still effectively keeping the exhaust system from the turbo the same bore size. Powerflow are pretty good at custom-made exhaust systems, or so I've heard. Chuck their name in Google, check their website, find your local/nearest branch, and have a chat with the lads there. |

Subject: HeadGasket Question: Hey! my car seems to get air in the water system everytime i use her which ends up me bleeding the air out to make it cool properley and i noticed my oil pressure is running 3 on idle to 5 when hot or driving, A little creamy inside the rocker and a bit steamy looking out the exhaust but compression is spot on ? What do ya think wiz? Answer: Have you checked the tightness of the headbolts? It could be that a couple are loose, and that the head is 'lifting' slightly under boost conditions, hence causing comb' gases to enter the water cct that way. Sounds extreme, but it is a feasible possibility. What type of compression readings are you getting? |

Subject: external wastegate Question: has anyone sucessfully done this on a 5?? i only ask as i have a turbo that has been modified to run one, and its a std gtt t2. the wastegate has been removed and welded up. Subject: Amal bleed valve Question: hi wizard oh great one i have a amal vale with a under the bonnet bleed it has 3 ports comimg of it which one gos to what on the car as i am stuck and dont know where they go iam running the cup mod to if u could help me i would be very greatfull thanks Answer: You need to find which one is the 'exhaust' port; ie, the one that bleeds off the actuator air when open/activated. Once you've deduced which one it is, the other 2 connect to the actuator (front port) and wherever you're taking the boost feed from (in your case, where the 'cup mod' outlet is on the carb). |

Subject: loosing boost Question: i seem to be loosin boost from somewere just cant find were, you can hear it very clearly when drivin and ticks over fine. ive tried swappin all the hoses around checked all the connections but nothing works. but what i cant understand is if its loosin boost why does the dash gauge shoot into the red when i let it wind up at about 3k, surely it should only go a up small amount if its loosin most of the boost. Answer: check the one way valves at the back of the manifold. also check the carb actually has the rubber o ring between it and the carb top. also block off the perc fan/solenoid take off, along the top boost pipe. the stndard intercooler can peel its ends off slightly, which can cause problems- check by taking off car and carefully filling with some white spirit, any leaks should become apparent! |

Subject: Front Wiper Question: Hello Wizard.. I have seen a lot of GTT with one front wiper !! can you tell me from what car, can i take one arm front wiper, and fit it to my GTT !!? Cheers Carlos. Answer: i think most people use a fiat uno wiper, modified to fit. you can buy wiper conversions though. personally they dont wipe the windscreen correctly, and in real hard rain dont work effectively. ask some people with them before you waste your money

Subject: D.v Question: Is there any reason that people always position the dumpvalve facing towards the rad and not towards the carb?? Or is it just personal prefference where to put it?? Answer: if the dumpvalve starts to blow oil out of it, then you'd want that oil to blow over the front of the engine and not the manifolds. as it could set alight. - just thought that up, sounds quite safety conscious doesnt it! *lol* usually it depends on how much silcone piping your have, and how much u wanna waste when fitting your d/v!!! |

Subject: mixture Question: Alrite matey, did all that stuff u sed bout gettin rid of some pipes and the anti perc fan at your work the other day, its loads better now cheers. Anyway enough ass kissing. which way do you turn the mixture screw to make it leaner ? And also if i take it to a garage so they can adjust it properly on their emssions machine wot do i want them to set it at ? Ive got a 130 main jet and 90-100 air corrector if that makes a difference. Answer: you screw the mixture screw in to make it leaner...i.e clockwise. if you let the car get up to temperature, then screw the misture in, eventually the revs will begin to drop. it is now running lean. this would be an ideal time to take it for an mot test when you get out of there, turn the mixture back up so it doesnt 'miss' at idle.you may have to adjust idle speed screw to pick revs up if you leave it lean.... |

Subject: Induction Kit Question: Dear Wizard Could you tell how to fit an Induction performance air filter kit? Also will this increase the BHP of the car and can I expect the sound of the engine to differ? Many thanks Mike Webb Answer: remove the airbox, and fit the air filter to the end of the U shaped pipe. it may help increase the bhp, if you keep hot air away from the air filter, as it maybe right next to the turbo. some carefully placed heatshield and metal corrigated tubing may help with this. the car will not make the same sound as that of say a clio 16v or a rover engine with an airfilter on it. it will be alittle more noisy though. some people say that the standard airbox, with a replacement air filter element is better, due to elimination of heat being sucked into the turbo, but if you look at the colour of the box, its black, black absorbs heat easily, so its a bit of a fallacy..... |

Subject: Perc fan - Won Question: Hi Wiz, Hope you can help, Recently, I've noticed that the Perc Fan is operating constantly. Even after the car has been left for a few hours, you can still hear the Perc fan operating/humming (Recently resulting in a flat battery!). I have therefore removed the in-line 15Amp fuse, to stop the thing coming on at all! Do you have any thoughts on why the Perc fan has started operating constantly? - and where I should begin looking, in order to resolve this issue - Could it be a defective Sensor? All feedback greatly appreciated in advance. Answer: it could be a sensor problem, but i would say its more likely the relay which operates it.the relay is located behind the drivers side headlight, mounted on the inner wing, next to the headlight one, just follow the wires from the perc fan to the relays to tell you which one it is. |
