Subject: boost guage Question: Ive just bought an after-market boost guage and have it plumbed it into the hose that goes from the bottom of the carb to the ECU. On tickover its reading -10psi which i understand is ok but when i'm actually driving, the needle will never get bove 0 but the standard guage in the dash is still reading nomally and reaching the 'B'. Can you help me out. Cheers. Answer: it sounds like maybe your boost gauge is faulty to me,if its a mocal one, remove it,and take the fitting for the boost pressue off the back of it,and there is a screw in the centre of the hole which registers boost, screw it out quarter of a turn, and try it again.if that doesnt do anything for you, then return it to who u got it from. |

Subject: Gasflowing Question: Hello there wise one; who would you recommend to gasflow and match the manifolds on a shiny new virgin head I have. I already have a GT Tuning stage 4 spec head set on the car, and want something better. I'm not doing this on a budget, I just want the best thats out there. Who should I be phoning for a top banana job oh clever one? Cheers in advance, Billy. Answer: flowing the manifolds is always a good idea,as long as its done properly.enlarging the ports massively isnt neccesary,as it wont improve your power massively. there is more to be had from flowing the manifolds out than the head itself...

Subject: Oil pump Question: hiya my oil pressure gauge read just under three bar when cold and then reads under two and sometimes lower when at optiom temperture. i know it likely to drop because of the oil getting thiner due to the temperture. i believe my oil pump is on its way out. do you? also where can i get a uprated oil pump. cheer mate. rob Answer: if your taking readings from the std gauge, then your best bet would be to get an aftermarket capilary gauge plumbed in.that will tell you more of whats going on if you think its suspect. |

Subject: oil pump Question: i have the clio gtt. i dont think its the gauge but i'll look into it. i'm thinking about uprating the oil pump anyway just to be safe. do you know of any tuners which have good performace and reliible oil pumps. thanks again rob. Answer: i heard that BB does a rebuild kit. do not buy under any circumstances the campus pump. it will kill your engine. do not fit any pump that dont look like the original gtt pump! it will remain reliable as long as your engine and oil remain clean! |

Question: alright mate , i want a fully adjustable suspension kit for my phase 2 ther are loads on the maket .but which are best suited to the 5 ? it will be lowerd about 60mm cheers mate Answer: If money is no object, have a look at Leda. Subject: Gearbox Removal Question: Oh Wizardy wiz wiz, Any tips on the removal of a gearbox without taking the whole engine out. you've probably read my posts about the Clutch woes that i have, and am going to attempt it myself.. so any infor or tips you could provide would be most appreciated regards Answer: taking the engine out and leaving the gearbox in is easier i find. as you only have to undo 1 engine mount. take the rad off, and starter motor off. then bellhousing cover and front steady bar. take all pipes off the starter and the servo hose from back of manifold. also take off accelerator cable. undo turbo cross over pipe from turbo elboow, and undo Y bracket from back of block. take off crank pulley too. then attach engine hoist to correct spots, and a trolley jack to the underside edge of the gearbox closest to the engine. take off the timing sensor! and the bolts attaching the gearbox to the engine!!! there is one under the starter motor!!!!! make sure you remove dowel at the front of the engine/gearbox. then start to hoist engine out, should come out at an angle, continue to raise gearbox via jack. at a certain gearbox angle you can then just lift engine straight upwards. if it helps remove the one engine mount and put loosely attach back to subframe, for when you put it together. you may wanna remove the dowel at the back of the gearbox too, it is under where the start used to be. put it back in when the engine back connected with the box. thats all i can think of off the top of my head! you dont have to drain the oil of the engine ot gearbox, feck with driveshafts or anything! |

Subject: perc fan probs Question: Dear wizard, my perc fan seems to choose when it wants to work and when it doesn't. I think this maybe to do with a faulty carb sensor (don't have a turbo sensor) as when the sensor cables are joined it works fine, problem is it somestimes operates while the engine is running?? can u help me please? Answer: its supposed to work intermittently! when the engine is on or off, the perc fan will work! the sensor is temperature activated and it just opens or closes an internal contact, which starts or stops the motor, according to how hot the carb base is! |

Subject: intermittent backfiring/spluttering Question: Hi Wiz, been running the engine in and all has been well until yesterday. I went to start it up and it was spluttering, not holding revs and backfiring. this continued for about 3 mins then suddenly went away. Drove for another 20 mins with no problems. Then today, started up fine but after about 10 mins driving it suddenly started happening again. It might sound stupid but when it suddenly started running ok the first time it was at the bottom of a steep hill coming from work. When it started spluttering etc. today it was at exactly the same place!? Probably just coincidence but thought I best emntion it anyway. Answer: check your timing sensor wire. a steep hill means that loose wires can swing backwards and touch things like hot manifolds and short out. |

Subject: 35mm or 40mm offset for 17 Question: Hello! I'm thinking of fitting 17's to my car and it seems that the most common offset to have is 35mm for a Five Turbo with 5mm spacers on the front. If I bought wheels with a 40mm offset would this eliminate the need for the spacers at the front? And if I did do this, would the offset cause any major problems at the back? Thanks! Answer: it depends what width the wheels are. |
