Question:
Hi wiz , my sweet little high maintenance 5 seems to produce some white smoke on start up , it clears immediatly after it runs up the road and doesnt allways do it , could it be the turbo or the piston rings or the fact its freezin at the mo!!??!, it runs well but it concerns me~!!, enlighten me master , give me guidance OB1.

Answer:
as its cold outside it could be just condensation.

there is a difference with condesation and smoke

Subject: nearly there

Question:
hows it going.my mate did a compression test today roughly 8bar no higher each cylinder is this right???? i thought it should be more ive had my head skimmed about 3 times but the last time i did it was when i cracked a piston liner i re built the bottom end but never got the head tested just skimmed could it be fecked i.e valve guides f***ed or head cracked could this be why im only gettin 150bhp instead of 220++. ps when i crcked a liner i was really hammering it for a while on 20psi.

Answer:
there is no real rule for compretion pressures .
the main thing is they are within 10% of each other.

think youve anwered your own question there 20 psi on a over skimmed head could be the route to the probs . as its now high compretion it will take some carfull setting up to make it all work

Subject: ANTI PERC FAN

Question:
hi wizard i have a problem with my anti perc fan i have never heard it run.i have taken the motor off and connected it to the battery and it works fine so i put it all back together.i have connected the wires under the carb together but it dont do out and also the wires for the turbo sensor and still nowt happens.i have also looked for the in line fuse but mine dont seem to have one i have also tryed swapping the relay with another and this dont do out either.can you tell me wether one of the wires runs from the alternator to the fan because there was one hanging off so i connected it to the negative on the alternator not sure if this was right or not sorry bout the essay thanks again gaz

Answer:
the perk fan takes its lives from the back of the alternator.
its a basic circuit involving lives and earths switching via a relay

if you have no fuse in place for the perk fan i wouild def get on put in

here is a wiring diag u might find usfull

Hi wiz , its seems its a mix , it has some condensation as you can seeit on the floor , but it defenitely has some smoke also , as it tarnishes me tailgate a little!!,is ther any thing i could check or any thing else that may give a clue as to why this happens ohh wise wiz???,cheers , an ever knowledge cravin student , Matt.

Answer:
Matt
set all your levels carfully that means coolent and oil
then see if any levels drop over a period of time . also note if any levels go up as this could indicate another fluid leaking into another.

if no level changes then its just condensation comming out your zorst wink

Subject: boost

Question:
wiz, how much boost can u run safely on a brand new standard turbo? it was running at 20 psi okay before cutting out now its at 17 holding boost could it go higher?

Answer:
Although std turbos can run more boost than 17psi, there's really not much point, as you're already starting to drift out of the turbo's efficiency zone (not good).

If you wanna run more boost than 17psi, get a bigger blower.

Subject: water injection (methanol)

Question:
im running water injection with a water -methanol mix i was wondering would it cause any damage running straight methanol? the engine is running better internals. cheers andy

Answer:
That's overkill, trust me! big grin

In our engines, even on hot summer days/high intake temp's, a mixture of 1/3rd methanol is usually more than enough.

If you want more detail, and in the words of Bill-J, 'search the boards', as water injection/methanol mixtures have been many a popular topic of conversation in the past.

Also have a look on ERL's website (the FAQ section) for good info regarding different inj' mixtures - www.aquamist.co.uk

Subject: jolting in 2nd gear

Question:
When in 2nd gear at about 2000 revs when pulling away it jolts like its cutting out ie as if running out of fuel, i only experience this in 2nd gear which i find strange as i have never come across this before in any of the cars i have owned. it has a group a carb and is running on optimax. its 15psi at carb. it has done this jitter since i have owned it which is only 6 weeks. Hope you can help as i dont know were to start
thanks
chris

Answer:
:spinny: could be a couple of things
check the wires that come up from the flywheel sensor . with the engine running give them a wiggle and see if it cuts out

second thing could could be a carb prob . see if the accelorator jet sys is working

Subject: Oil breather pipe

Question:
Is it safe to unplug the oil breather pipe from the telephone hose to prevent excessive oil from building up in the intercooler? If so what can be used as plug in the telephone hose? Would I lose boost if it was not air tight? Sorry for all the dumb questions!

Answer:
Yep, there's no problem in doing that. It's one of the first mod's that people do to their 5's, as it stops any (hot) oil vapour being drawn back into the boost stream.

Stick a small breather filter on the pipe that you remove, and find a suitable bung to put in the vacant hole on the telephone hose. If you can't find a bung, you could 'wrap' the telephone hose with insulating tape (for example). Whatever you use, make sure it holds firm, as you don't want it getting sucked into the turbo when on full boost!

Subject: Noises - horrible noises

Question:
I just replaced the rear brakes and there is a clipping noise from the drivers side rear caliper & disk, i know its not much but i have tried everything to solve it and i cant - an advice?

also the drivers side front wheel is making aweful noise, when i turn to the right is peachy no noise at all, turn to the left and it makes a sound like a lathe facing hardened steel!, i have checked it out and i cant see anything - any ideas

cheers

Answer:
the 'lathe' noise is blatently your wheelbearing crying for freedom! get this sorted pronto, it could stick solid - not good.
the clipping noise is probably a sticky caliper. you have two choices. replace or fix.
fix it by removing the pads, pump the pedal, so the piston comes out a bit, and the wind it back in. then repeat several times. this can help sort it out.
also are you sure you have still got the piece of 'L' shaped metal that stops the pads falling out/ moving around sill on there. anti rattle springs are also handy....

Subject: turbo

Question:
ive just got a turbo off my mate and dont know what size it is the numbers on the exhaust side say 63 and the numbers on the other side are ar48 m45 97 30 and its a garrat h1 can u help

Answer:
The 'ar48' gives a clue to what size the compressor housing is, and if you look in the scroll/throat/gas inlet of the exhaust housing, there should be a number stamped there indicating the a/r.

Once you've got the number, have a search on the boards and you'll probably be able to find what spec the turbo is/which car it's from/parts are from, etc.

Subject: valve clearances

Question:
Hi, i recently had my valve clearances, ajusted, due to a slight ticking noise, this solved the problem for about a week, then the ticking noise started again? could it be valve clearances again? p.s i have a 270 performance cam with h/l springs and low compession pistons, also this may sound stupid, can you get group A rocker cover gaskets, coz when i had my valve vlearances ajusted just a normal gasket was used?

Answer:
Last question first: No such thing available, and no reason for it - Std/o.e gasket is fine.

As for the ticking noise, it could well be the valve clearances 'drifted' out of adjustment again (were the lock-nuts fully tightened?). What clearances were they set to?

Also, when was the oil last changed? Old oil can cause 'ticky' tappets.

Subject: Anythin i may of missed out??

Question:
Hi wiz , its matt here , getting somewhere at last with the car!.
I have been offerd a turbo dynamics hybrid T25 turbo, its got a dash 31 actuator and is a T2 with a T25 in side it aparantly, well anyhow if i buy it wot sort of boost am i able to run on it safely also i have a copper rad, pace double cap intercooler, adjustable cockpit boost etc, large jets, what else should i be looking to do to run the boost higher and safely??, help me please wiz , id like to run about 15psi if poss??and do it safely!.

Answer:
You should be able to get away with running 15psi on std carb jets, but to play safe, drill the main jet out to 1.3mm. That will also allow you to run several psi more than 15psi if needs be, but as with all things fuel/boost related, get the w.o.t (wide open throttle) afr's/c.o checked on a set of rollers.

Happy boosting!

Subject: blue smoke

Question:
hi im a bit puzzled ive got a new turbo T25 hybrid running 12psi and a gas flowed head which had new stem seals fitted but the car seems to randomly chuck out blue smoke it doesnt do it on boost only on tickover ive checked the breather hoses and theres no obvious sign of a blockage if its turbo or head related which is it more likely to be as i got them from differant suppliers it seems to do it after overun which i would think is the stem seals?

Answer:
could be valve stem seals, but they always smoke on start up after a healthy run....like mine does smile
smoke when you press accelerator after overrun scenario is most likely turbo oil seals. but if u contact the supplier, i bet they will tell you that the seals need 'carboning up'. which can be equated with the term 'cr@p'.
make sure you havent got excess bottom end pressure either, as this can cause turbos to smoke too.... (pressure up oil return causes oil to back up , and leak out of oil seal)

Subject: fuel out of exhaust

Question:
hello mate, got fuel coming out of the exhaust on tick over (side exit exhaust) smells of fuel. after a while on tick over the car stalls and wont re start for approx 30 mins and when does start cuts back out again. would you say its just over fueling and is it just a simple adjustment on the mixture screw on the carb as explained on the haines manual.

cheers!
alex

Answer:
time to fork out for a carb gasket kit my friend! several places do them smile
you will need to take your carb apart and clean thoroughly. i usually find taking it apart and soaking in petrol for a night works, then clean with toothbrush, and then soak in vinegar for 15mins MAXIMUM!!! wash off thoroughly!!!! (can use coke, but takes longer.....)
all sh it will then be out of carb, and should be clean. then fit gasket kit.

or could try screwing in mixture screw.....might sort it. but DO NOT FORCE THE SCREW IN TOO FAR, ELSE IT SNAPS !!!

Subject: stalling at idle

Question:
hi there got knew engine from renault.every thing in engine bay is knew.grp a carb gttuning overhall kit idle screw.idle screw is threaded tried eveything do i need knew carb just to get that part or can it be re threaded.sorry 4 so much s*** it has being like this 4 some time.

Answer:
are u saying that the mixture screw is threaded or the idle control screw?
last time i checked the idle control screw was just a normal bolt.....so you could probably use a normal bolt, with maybe a nut either side to stop it moving around, if the thread on the carb is fecked.

Subject: valve clearances 2

Question:
they were set to
cold/inlet0.20mm/0.008inches
cold/exhaust0.25mm/0.010inches
as in haynes manual,as for lock nuts unsure....! coz it was done by a mechanic at a local garage.
The oil was changed less than 1000 miles ago. I do remember when the ticking noise started again, it was just after a rather hair rasing blast on the country roads!! if this is any help.
cheers!!!!!

Answer:
Valve clearances are fine; that's what they should be.

It could be that the oil you're using is thinning out too quickly once hot, which would explain the tapping after thrashing the engine.

A few things you could try to rectify that...

Try a slightly higher viscosity oil (stating the obvious).

Measure the oil temp' and see what's happening to it as you're booting the car around, and also check how quickly it drops back down to normal running/operating temp' when you're coasting along - Perhaps the oil cooler section of the radiator isn't as efficient as it once was.

You could try setting the valve clearances a bit smaller (Inlet: 0.15mm and Exhaust: 0.20mm). This is what Renault actually quoted for valve clearances back in the day, as does the v early revisions of the Haynes manual, but as you're running a higher lift cam than std, I'd carry out this option as a last resort.

Either that, or don't worry about it at all, and carry on enjoying & driving your car as it is smile

Subject: oil pressure

Question:
Hi wiz
My oil pressure guage reads max when i turn the ignition on an drops to zero when the engine is started, Also on tickover and over run there is grey smoke and a burning oily smell any ideas? cheers dan

Answer:
oil pressure gauge actually reads depth of oil when you have igntion on. when you start the car it then swaps to oil pressure. your gauge maybe knackered....best get an aftermarket one.
if you do have very little oil pressure you will probably need a new oil pump and maybe even big/main bearings and perhaps a new turbo.
LOW OIL PRESSURE IS REALLY BAD FOR YOUR CAR AND BANK BALANCE!

Subject: Fuel pump noise

Question:
Dear wonderous wizard of carz (nearly funny)
I have had a dashboard fire and refitted the dashboard loom along with the alarm and immobiliser. The car will start to crank but I can't start it at the moment because the water pipes etc are missing. What I want to ask is when I put the ignition onto postion two should I hear the fuel pump running or not. I remember hearing it running before in the past but I'm not sure whether it was on this car or the previous one.
Any help would be appriciated
Bob

Answer:
nearly funny but not really.
the fuel pump should not run until the car starts. then it runs for a very short time after the car is stopped. unless of course you have bypassed the fuel pump relay. then it does run all the time the ignition is on.

Question:
Will they bolt straight into the 5 tubby, no driveshaft problems, etc????

i think they will bolt straight onto a 5, the driveshafts should fit ok, as renault ones are all similar except for the length of em. only potential problem is where the shock absorber joins it. im not sure the holes are the same distance apart.....

Subject: blue smoke 2

Question:
its pretty random but has got worse over the last 2 weeks started with a puff on start up now does it when left ticking over for more than 30 seconds theres no oil in the boost pipes at all but i have to keep it on choke to keep tickover at 900rpm off choke it floats around 500rpm but doesnt cut out im pretty sure its engine rather than turbo as the previous turbo blew the seal on the exhaust side but it didnt smoke on start up not until the manifold had warmed up and there no oil at all on the inlet side i have bought a head gasket kit and new stem seal do you think this may cure it any advice is much appreciated thanks

Answer:
have you done a compression test?as that will either show that u have problems with worn rings,or could tell u that theyre fine and rule it out for you.
other than that,is the brether system clear?
are the stem seals/valve guides in good condition?
there are a multitude of possibilities,u just have to rule them out one at a time,or take it to a specialist or someone that knows what theyre doing with 5's.smile

Subject: puff of smoke at rev limiter!!!!

Question:
hi, is it normal t get a puff of black smoke when you hit the rev limiter in low gears? e.g first an second, no smoke at any other time.

Answer:
yeah, the rev limiter cuts the spark, so you are putting unburned fuel into the exhaust, hence black/blue/grey smoke.
