Subject: Misfire, no spark.....

Question:
Hello Wizard!

Recently (in the last few months) I would have a problem where I'd be driving along, and then the car would start to fire on 3 cylinders, then 2 cylinders, and then stall out (while moving). If I pulled over, turned off engine, wait 10 mins, then start it again I could drive around fine for the rest of the day. It's an intermittent problem (only happens sometimes).

But I'd left the car sat for a week and went to drive it at the weekend; only I couldn't get it to fire. So I tried jumping with another car - thinking maybe I left a light on or something and flattened the battery. However it still would not fire. I checked for some spark at the Dizzy - nada, no spark!

Do these sound related? I guessed maybe a faulty ignition unit and/or coil. Before I start buying new parts what do you suggest the fault could be?

Thanks.

Answer:
get a new relay that sits next the ignition unit. also check the timing sensor wire isnt fried. that should be it!

Subject: carb broken / boost to high

Question:
Hi Wiz

Ive finaly got my car m.o.t`d, and it seems here is where the fun starts.
The guys who did the many things to my r5 to get it to pass told me whilst handing me the mot cert that they couldnt tune her properly cos the carb was knackered, the little screw that adjusts the carb does nothing, you can screw it all the way in and all the way out and it doesnt affect the running at all? is it usless or can this be fixed do you think? ( i rang renault 4 a price on a new carb and the guy said whilst laughing £500 + vat !!!!!) frown
I took her for a drive and found she does run very lumpy but ok enough to drive, you cant put your foot hard on the accelerator coz she just just slows down due to the fuleing to the carb probably, but you can go failry quick if you gradually accelerate, the boost guage gradually increases as the speed does but, around about 40 - 45 rpm the boost gauge is off the scale, and the car gave a little sneeze and a pop and i s*** myself and took my foot off the gas, should this happen? (ive only done this twice i dont let her go that high anymore coz im scared im gona wreck something) should the boost go off the scale? if not is it due to the carb or is it another problem?

Sorry that this is essay, im just a bit gutted that now shes m.o.t`d i still cant drive her frown

Thanx wiz Jay

Answer:
id suggest that the mechanic numpty's forgot to connect the wastegate actuator pipe up to the carb top, or they messed with the turbo to get more boost, so it would be more fun when they drove it around 'for a test drive'.....
if you take the carb off the engine, then check to see that the bottom of the mixture screw aint snapped off in the carb base. also check to see that the mixture screw actually has a black rubber o ring around it.

Subject: INTERCOOLER

Question:
Mr wizz, me once more, i have a KTR 230 turbo capable of 28 psi, what sort of intercooler would optimise this particular turbo?

I have done loads of serious mods, to the car it'll be running around 14 psi normally, but i want to beat all the scooby doo's and the cossies, 172 cups etc, would a grille mount be beneficial? I dont want to change my front bumper for the fmic.

Cheers Merlin

Answer:
you could always go for a chargecooler....
a grille mount intercooler does require a little work to fit it.... or from what ive seen it does.

as long as its bigger then standard and receives a good airflow then it should be fine.

Subject: poo results

Question:
its a group A carb set up by ian at ep so i think the jets are big enough 4 it. im havin it rollin roaded at mikeanics place near me not sure if you will know it??? i know he was going up through the gears then flooring it through 4th and i think some times 5th???? but think he might of done it the other way too. the only increase i got from the cam and sise exit was torque by about 17lbft and about 6bhp. ive changed the ecu and taken the knock senser off still not any different i know theres 1 inlet manifold nut missing and 2 outlet but still solid carn't be loosing 50-80bhp cos of this could i???? what should be done to a cylinder head to increase power and how much would it cost roughly?cheers! ps when i do the head if it dont hit over the 200bhp mark its yours for a ton..

Answer:
you dont need to do the head, for over 200bhp.
check to see that your compression and timing is ok!!! if your timing is out it will lose power.
maybe you should take it to an actual renault 5 tuners that still has its rollers like maybe glen @ dynotech and get them to look at it. cos im not 100% that mikeanics is gonna be accurate, or even know wassup with the car.
also your car could still be overfuelling......

Question:
done the service 2day hoping the stuttering would be resolved. oil an filter, new plugs.dizzy cap an arm and fuel filter. can boost perfect an floor it in 1st an 2nd, then it splutters at 4k in 3rd and then bout 3 k in 4th. seems to boost fine but the engine aint revving up with the boost. i got a 130 jet in the grp a carb. it happens no matter wat boost i run, which is anythin frm 10 2 20 psi

Answer:
a 130 jet is a litle small for 20psi, maybe you should try a 140 or a 150 main jet.

Subject: injection

Question:
hi wiz.been looking in to fuel injection, what woult it take to make the uno turbo injection work on a gtt? cheers

Answer:
if u mean what parts u would need, then u would be looking at all the various sensors, injectors, and ecu with loom, and u could maybe modify it to fit.
as for the inlet plenum,i dont think the ph.2 one would fit at all,and the ph.1 type would still need modifying heavily to fit.
tbo, with all the work needed,u would be better off makign a new manifold,as it wouldnt take much more time to do.

Subject: whining fuel pump.... i think???

Question:
Hello again oh wise one,

Lately have noticed that the fuel pump seems to be alot louder than normal. You can hear it from outside the car but it is louder from inside??? Thought maybe the aux pump but it still happens on a half and full tanks of petrol.

Just wanted your input on what it could be before i chuck more money at the b****** thing!!

There is no hesitation or starvation at any rpm or psi.... so i was thinking maybe a dodgy relay? or is it the pump on its last legs?

many thanks yet again

Answer:
with car running, reach under the back of the car to where the aux fuel pump is, if its running, then you will be able to feel it oscillating.

more likely explanation, is that the clamp holding the pump is slightly loose of summat, or the pump has slipped and is touching summat.
undo the clamp, and have a look what the score is.

Subject: boost trail

Question:
ok friday night i made some stainless steel boost hoses which are brilliant and that night the car ran fine with slightly higher boost than whith the old pipes it used to be just under 1 bar and it sat at a nats tit over 1 bar which is good and the pipes look a lot better and will never split

the problem is today i ran the car and initially the boost goes up to 1 bar and then trails off after 4k to about 3/4 bar any ideas what causes this..

i removed the dump valve in case this was the problem and noticed a slight improvement but still got a dump valve kind of noise more of a chatter though but it is loud should it do this.

ive checked all pipes and they are all find no leaks and every think is tight do u think it could be the actuator

thanks in advance

Rich

Answer:
why not replace the metal pipes with your old set, to see if it summat else.
when my turbo gave up the ghost, it used to tail off at high revs, it was the blades catching the housing....
although it could also be the actuator...

Subject: I have just bought

Question:
I have just bought a silver Phase 1 silver R5 GT Turbo, it is very original with the grey bodykit and original alloy wheels. Of course it looks pants....have you any ideas how I can make it look trendy??
Many Thanks Bob

Answer:
well, it would take far too much money, to make it look good, so i'd suggest selling it on before you lose too much sleep over the impending costs.
in fact you can sell it to sparkie, as i know his silver phase 1 is looking decidedly 'downtrodden' these days.smile

-failing that lower it and stick some ronal r10's on it.

Subject: Cage

Question:
Oh great one please hear me. How do you go about removing a 6 point roll cage? What happens to the holes in the floor? Do these holes have any adverse effect on the car?Should I leave it for a pro?

Thankyou thou wiard.

Answer:
you callin me weird???wink
i think you have to remove all the seats, and then the seperate cross pieces. i did hear that you have to use a ratchet strap to bend certain poles together, so it would fit correctly, maybe you need to use the same technique to get it out. maybe safety devices will give you some advice if you tell them that you need to remove a roll cage from your car, that you've just bought.
i would get the holes welded/sealed up, as they will let water in.

Subject: Van run about

Question:
Hi wiz

I was thinking of getting a renault 5 extra van for a run about, iv seen a guy in the club whos got one and his is lowerd to the floor and hes got the 1.7 engine powering it. i was wondering if it would be possible to fit the 1.4 turbo engine into it and also how would i go about lowering it if its got leaf spring at the back, thnxs much if u can help

Answer:
it is possible to fit the gt turbo lump in it, as Ian@EP did this ages ago.
to lower leaf sprung rear ends you need weird sort of blocks to position the axle above the spring. the more block, the lower the car gets. look at any old ford or van, they all tend to use the same thing.

Subject: overboost sensor

Question:
hi wiz,on recent inspection of my boost pipes i noticed that 1 of the wires that run to the sensor(turbo 2 intercooler pipe) has been disconnected, would this have anything to do with my turbo under performing and my 2 boost gauges(the dash one and a aftermarket gauge) giving different readings?

what does is the purpose of this sensor?

thanks

Answer:
it would have nothing to do with the differing boost readings. thats easy, one of the boost gauges is new, the other is over 10yrs old. then brass tube inside the unit in the car, has been curling up and uncurling for this entire time everytime the car boosts, it will be suffering from cyclic fatigue. smile
the sensor cuts the spark when you get over the preset boost, so that in the event of your turbo overboosting and damaging the engine, it cuts the spark instead. its set at 15psi standard.

Subject: timing

Question:
you tell me its the fueling or timing so if its the timing should i advance it and how would i do this?? by swapping the timing sensors leads round or should i buy a adjustable timing sensor??? and how much should i advance it by? or should i not?
ps the fueling should be spot on so how come every time i start the car it fires up fine then dies in a second and then struggles to start again but once started it leaves a load of black shite on the curb from the exuast whats the crack!!

Answer:
well that black soot could be the car is overfuelling when running, and it just blows it out when you start the car.
best bet is to get it setup by someone who knows the cars inside out,as then they will go straight to anything that looks wrong.
as for timing, its soemthing i do only on rr's now,as i find every car needs to be setup different.

will there be any problems with this conversion?

Subject: air lock

Question:
hi wiz i keep getting air locks in my cooling system and it is starting to p*ss me off, what could be causing this

Answer:
the most common cause of airlocks is lack of water in the system, have you checked for leaks?
how do you bleed the system?
i raise the header tank up high, remove both bleed screws from the top hoses, and fill it up til it comes out of them steadily, without any air at all in the water.that way it bleeds itself, and is 100 percent effective every time.

Answer:
yes you could use the egine looms from c engine 5's . but you may find that they are missing a few things like oil pressure wires and perk fan wiring .
but with a bit of cafull planning you could make your own or tydy up your old one

Subject: Expansion tank

Question:
Hi there he that knows it all.

I have moved my expansion tank round the corner of the arch and put air filter where expansion tank was. Should i leave the heatshield on to protect expansion tank pipes etc or will it be ok without??

Tankin yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Answer:
i find it to be ok without the heatshield,as long as theres about an inch between the tank and turbo it should be fine, but if u have the shield it wont do any harm fitting it back on.

Subject: clio engine conversion 172/182

Question:
can it be done??
do you know of one that has been done and runnin well?

Answer:
i do indeed know of one thats been done, but its 90 percent done at the moment, using the 172 engine, and also turbocharged, with a rebuilt engine to turbo specs,ie slightly lowered compression, flowed head etc etc...
the biggest problem is the bonnet clearance,as hes had to redrill the mounts that go onto the block to sit it further down, and its still too tight,so hes raised the bonnet slightly, but it would look better just to put a slight bulge into it,as it would only have to be small to clear the inlet plenum.

if your on about the slight play that you get in the shaft when the engine is off . that is normal

turbo's use a floating bearing that ceralises with oil pressure

bunge the turbo on and see if it works . if it works and doesnt leak oil . leave well alone
