Subject: carb Question: the car chugs out black smoke all the time from tickover to full boost even with the mixture scew wound right in is really bad on fuel 12 mpg could it be leaking fuel in somewhere would a rebuild fix it or is it best to replace the carb Answer: a rebuild is better as u get to learn how it works. sounds like maybe you aint got a main jet in *lol* before you condemn it, take the carb apart, see if anything is missing, jet wise, then buy the gasket kit and fit it. if its still dodgy then buy another carb. |

Subject: external wastegate Question: i have got a turbo that has been modded to run one.. where can i get one etc. as i dont have a clue about it all. chhers Answer: i can tell :P but as i like ya, ill tell ya what to do ![]() u could get a wastegate, and get it to fit, but u will be shocked at how much the external ones are and the fact you will have toget some welding done on the manifold and turbo to fit it. ur best and cheaper bet is to get some kindly soul's standard t2 turbo (it can be totally fecked, it won't matter), and take off the exhaust housing and fit it to yours. making sure the exhaust blades are the same diameter. you will also have to use the actuator and mounting bracket that are on the fecked one too. it will screw onto the compressor housing. hope this kinda helps dude! |

Subject: ticking /no light Question: hi wiz 1st i got a ticking coming from over by the relay seems to be coming from a white one any clues 2nd battery light dont come on since we changed the wiring loom checked the bulb its ok any clues cheers Answer: You don't say how often the ticking noise is - but if it's every 5 seconds or so, it's probably your rear window wiper on intermittant wipe - and your wiper motor's not working. You've probably knocked the switch on the dash without noticing, and because the wiper isn't moving you're not aware of it. Check the wiper works on the other (wash/wipe) switch, and if not, look at fixing the wiring or motor. If the battery warning light isn't coming on, it's because the small plug at the top of the alternator's not connected. This runs though the main engine wiring loom to the connector by the coolant bottle. Check for continuity there. If there's no current through the warning light, the alternator field coils have no power, and the alternator won't be charging the battery. Wiz. |

Subject: air leaks Question: Hello wiz, with regards to my question on THROTTLE, how do i test for air leaks? I ve also noticed that my throttle doesnt stick when i start from cold wiv the choke on until the car warms up!!! Answer: There's several traditional ways of finding air leaks from hoses and the like. One of the easiest is to take a plant mister, fill it with a mix of washing up liquid and water, and lightly spray anywhere a leak might occur from with the engine running. You'll get foam and bubbles if there's a leak. Rememeber to wipe the washing up liquid off afterwards, as it'll go sticky and attract dirt. Wiz. |

Subject: Grp A Carb Question: thanks for that. Also, will a Grp A carb make a difference on an otherwise standard engine (std turbo, head, bottom end)? Or do I need a package eg. hybrid turbo alloy intercooler etc? Cheers. Answer: i find a larger carb seems to make a difference on any car i fit it on if its setup properly for that cars spec,as it frees up the top end rpm more. |

Subject: 200BHP? Question: Hi its me again. Just gettin my monies worth ha ha. I am hoping to get approx 200BHP out of my car but also want to keep my reliability. does running lower boost give more reliability? if so what other modifications would I need to get that sort of power safely? Cheers Wiz Answer: there are a few things to u need to do to get to around 200bhp,and various routes you can take. i know of people that have left the head and block alone except for an uprated headgasket, and done a few good mods elsewhere. but personally,if your going to try and get 200bhp,and want full reliability, then a rebuild may be worth considering, with a cam change, and some headwork included in that rebuild to help with higher rpms and to spread the power band. lower boost means less heat, and if u dont have sufficient cooling, then will mean more reliability yes. mods i would go for would be,a full 2.5inch bore exhaust system and downpipe, enlarged carb,t25/t3 turbo and a decent intercooler/chargecooler system for a start. a good buy would be water injection as your after reliability,as it will help cool the pistons when flat out. then a good setup on the rollers by someone whos got some experience with high power renault 5's will help get the most from the car you have built.

Subject: Mornin starting and missing Question: Hi there, My car's been in storage while I was studying in America and I've just got it back on the road and fitted a new Hybrid turbo. It has trouble startin and if I touch the accelerator when I first try and start it it just cuts out. After the initial start of the day it's ok. And once it's runnin it's a bit jumpy and sounds like it's mis-firing slightly. It's very juddery at low revs too. Any ideas what it might be?? I fitted a group A carb just before I left the country but could it be the jets that are blocked perhaps??? Answer: Definately check the jets for any muck. Do you have your old carb? If so, refit that and see if it's better. Best to rule out the thing you changed before wasting time looking at things you didn't change... Also check there's no leaks around the carb base. Wiz. |

Subject: BLIMMIN SPEEDO PROBS Question: Hi wiz , im havin problems with my speedo , what would you say check and how do i get to the bits im checking??.any help would be usefull!!!!, thanks , Matt , Bristol. Answer: The plug on the back of the speedo itself is well know for not making good contact. Remove the instrument panel, and clean up the speedo wiring plug. Also check the connector behind the standard airbox (also can work loose), and the speedo sensor itself (next to the rear engine mount) for damaged wiring. Wiz. |

Subject: Oil pressure Question: What is the correct oil pressure when warmed up and aon idle?? Cheers Answer: At idle (750rpm) it should be at least 1.3Bar (19psi), and at 4000rpm it should be at least 3.2Bar (47psi) - although on an older engine you might find these slightly lower (say 40psi at 4000rpm), without any real danger. Subject: Gear linkage Question: How hard is it to fix/change one of these? chris Answer: not too hard. undo the 4 bolts that hold it to the car and the one that holds it the gearbox. then the whole linkage and gearstick is removeable. if u mean just the gear linkage, it can be an a*** to get the gear selection working correctly.... |

Subject: Super chip Question: Hi wizz, Does anyone sell a superchip for the 5 turbo phase 2? if they do, where can you get them? if such a thing doesnt exist, is there anything i can do to ecu to remap it? Cheers, Dave Answer: erm, you can stick £100 in an envelope and give it to me if you want, ill turn up at your doorstep and spend 15mins on your car and give you 150bhp..... they dont do superchips for 5's cos all our aei controls is the ignition advance and retard. some people reckon you can fiddle with them , especially the RE208 module which has an adjuster screw on the front of it, but if u fu ckit up, you knacker the unit! you could try bleeding off some of the boost to the unit, so it gives big advance until you want it to retard it, or you could have two timing sensors on the gear box and have them switch over at certain boost, to give advance/ retard when boost comes on. failing that, reach for the piggy bank and buy an omex/haltech/bobs yer uncle after market type. |

Subject: fan keeps burning out Question: hi i got a 5 iv replaced the fan twice now because it stops workin after a month or so why ? its not thefan switch ? it just stops ??????? Answer: have you checked the relay that feeds power to the switch? its by the alternator. if your sustem has been bodged, and its dont have the relay, then what can happen is that the commutator in the fan motor, can spark alittle too much when power gets to it, and causes a dead spot on the the brushes, hence they dont allow the motor to turn. you can sometime get round this by connecting a car battery directly to it and spinning the fan blades to kinda jumpstart it. |

Subject: more bhp Question: i would like more bhp from a standard engine.i already have an air filter and dump valve.what can i do to the engine without buying new turbos etc?would a rolling road tune help? Answer: Air filter won't really release any power from a stock engine, and a DV won't make any difference. However you've made a good start. Increasing the boost will increase the power - have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions article in the Articles section for some pointers on where to start, and what you should look at uprating before you start increasing the power output. Certainly - modify the exhaust, air filter, cooling system, then increase the boost to 12psi. That should give you around 130bhp or so. Wiz. |

Subject: poor results still Question: no way had it rr again after putting a ep race spec cam in and k-tech full system 2.5"" side exit on and the results are still the same as last time 150bhp @20psi how can this be!!! im tryin for 230bhp but not gettin any where the only thing i aint done to the car is polish and ported the head every thin else is uprated im sure i should be gettin a least 200bhp out of it as it is? its starting to p*ss me off can you help?? Answer: yeah, ill buy the car off you for £100..... ![]() where are you getting it rolling roaded? - there are several types, and several readouts accordingly. ive have 230bhp on one, and 165bhp on a different type. are they holding the car at a certain revs and dipping the throttle to get a reading or are they running thru the gears and then flooring it in 4th until you get a good reading. also is the reading at the flywheel or the wheels? you can get over 200bhp without touching the head...i know this for a fact maybe you are overfuelling...what carb jets are you running? |

Subject: carb jets Question: hi, i'm wanting to have a go drilling a spare carb i have sitting around. i've been told the standard jet is 1.25, is this right???? what size can i drill the jets out to so that the suit each other???? thanks. Answer: the standard air corrector is 1.25 mm....and you need to make this smaller.....so what are you going to do? you should only really make it smaller if you have a 27mm venturi, and i bet yours is 25mm (standard) i would look at the main jet which is 1.2mm and drill it to 1.3mm, this should be ok for maybe 18psi, depends what boost you wanna run? |

Subject: Spark plugs Question: When i go to my car to start it it hardly attempts to fire. When i take the plugs out there is a strong smell of fuel on these. I would have thought it would have been incorrect chaulk setup or air filter. What is it?? and how do i sort it out??
